Gus's BBQ - Porter Ranch
Second time I I have been and I’m not in love. I really want to love it but it’s just so so. Maybe I’m ordering wrong? The space is cute and the service is okay the food just seems okay...
The BBQ ribs, chicken, and corn bread were really delicious and the service was very friendly and responsive to special requests. The braised southern greens were spicy (not indicated on the menu) but very good too. Service was a little late slow and it was very noisy, but I’m sure we’ll be back for the food.
Just had a second meal here. Service was great thanks to our server Christen. Our group all enjoyed the meal.
Great BBQ. Reservations recommended on weekends, lest you wait one or two hours for a table. Very noisy, acoustic tiles in the ceiling might help.
Ver nice service!
Went here with family on a Friday night. I wanted to really love this place because good bbq is really hard to find this part of the valley. But the food was just OK and service was decent.
Food was good but could hardly enjoy the company it was so noise
The food is amazing! My son got the Nashville hot chicken. Him being from Nashville he was excited to try it here but a little nervous that it
Second time at Gus's. First time was Day 4 after they opened. First time everything was hot, the service great and the food was great. Second visit, 3 weeks later, the food was marginally cold, the service was slow. I got the rib combination with brisket and sausage entree's. The brisket was very fatty and not edible..also not the case on the first visit. The microbeer was great and hats off for supporting the locals. Two of the breweries within a couple miles. I got 10th anniversary brew from Eagle Rock...if you like a hoppy beer you would love this one. We're hoping that this was just an off night and we plan on trying it again.
We made reservation for 315pm... arrived few minutes early and was seated promptly... the hosts were ok - not too friendly, seems a bit disorganized...server was nice but things took a not so great turn - waited for almost an hour for our food... good food but the service could be improved...
Our first time there , 8:30 pm and still busy . We ordered the cornbread appetizer which my husband loved but I thought it was “ grainy “. He had ribs and chicken , I had the brisket which were both outstanding. I was so excited to finally have a local spot to find collard greens but they were a huge disappointment. We will go back but order different side dishes
Fabulous! Food and service were excellent!
Great dining experience. I would highly recommend. Their new location is every bit as good as the original in South Pasadena. Make a reservation if you can. This restaurant will likely be packed most of the time
Was not pleased with the brisket sandwich I had for lunch. It was very expensive for the amount of meat that was included, and I did not like that there were cubes of meat instead of slices - very strange. Did not like the taste of the meat, as I thought it was bitter and the BBQ sauce was also bitter. I enjoy a bit of sweetness and more tomato flavor in my BBQ sauce. My friend that was with me had the same sandwich and the same opinion of the taste. I was really looking forward to trying this place, but they won't see me back. I was embarrassed because I had recommended that we go there for lunch. Big mistake! They better work on the taste of their food and get their prices in line with the amount of food that is served. The only good thing I had was their potato salad. Also, the waitress didn't know the menu items - I asked if the pulled pork sauce was mustard based and she didn't have a clue. I don't eat mustard so that was an important question for me. She also didn't refill my water until after I called her over at the end of the meal, and then she poured from a pitcher that hardly had any water in it and no ice. It looked like it had been sitting on this shelf for a long time. Not very appetizing. Get it together service people!
Food was good. Service was great. Manager intervened after we had an order delivered incorrect and comped the item since we didn’t want to send it back. Wong appetizer was good, tri tip and brisket were on point.
Service was excellent. Everyone on the wait staff was friendly, kind and efficient. We sat with the cornbread and appetizers plates on the table for the duration of our stay. They should have been cleared before the dinner was served. It made the table crowded. But regardless, the staff was super friendly.. Unfortunately, I would eat anything, never complain about food and I cherish the nights that I don't have to cook,..but the food at GUS was horrible. WE DID NOT LIKE ANYTHING,.. the cornbread was too corny, I didn't like any of the sauces, no one told me that the hot sauce was not a bbq sauce so I accidently used that on some of my ribs (yuck). The shrimp and grits were TERRIBLE, bland and with out soul or love. The tri-tip tasted like packaged food...TERRIBLE. My friend had the Caesar salad and was in shocked how anyone could mess up a salad. The bake beans GROSS, the greens not cut properly and unseasoned. I don't think we will ever return which is unfortunately with the Movie theater opening and it's so close. I guess for BBQ we will have to trek 20 minutes away to Lucille's instead of around the corner to Gus's.
Surprised by how great the service was even with the restaurant being packed. Food was also very tasty
Fantastic food. Fantastic service with a personal touch. Wonderful addition to the neighborhood and we will certainly be going back soon. Only issue is it’s a bit noisy for conversation - mostly because it’s completely full of happy peoples enjoying their meal. If the weather is nice, we will try eating outside next time.
I really wanted to like Gus' but the food was meh. The meat was over smoked and tasted medicinal. The char and the texture of the meat was really good but there was little smoke flavor. We had the chicken, the baby backs and the tri-tip. The tri-tip was overcooked and dry. The chicken was juicy but pink like bacon and no smoke flavor. The baby backs were dry and pink like bacon, not juicy and falling off the bone. The cornbread was good, but nothing like the ho-cake at Barrel and Ashes. (I hear that Barrel and Ashes closed so that is sad). I'm not sure where to go for good BBQ in the Valley now. The drinks were good. I had the Almost Palmer which was weak alcohol wise but flavorful. It was garnished with dried ginger and that was a nice touch. We probably won't go back just because there are so many other restaurants in the Valley that are much better.
excellent ! where to get my fix of southern, cornbread inna skillet is a must !
Was looking forward to eating here. Chili was good but not great. CornBread better at Ralphs. Ribs were dry and way too much smoke for our taste. chicken quite small for the price. Hamburger great!
Loved having a new place to dine in Porter Ranch. I loved all the menu options. The several dishes we ordered were delicious. Offers great alcohol drinks, too. The staff were friendly! Will be back!
We had reservations at 8PM, but noticed two seats available at the bar at 7:30’. The bartenders/servers were personable and helpful. Drinks and food good although they were out of the baby backs so we opted for the St.Louis Style. Old fashion was a bit small, the food wasn’t piping hot but all and all, we enjoyed our meal
It was a very strange experience. Reservations were scarce but there were tables that sat empty for a good 20-30 minutes. Our server came up right away but would disappear for long periods of time. When he finally took our money order, our salads were brought out right away but we had to remind him about the onion strings. He kindly took those off the bill since he never put the order in. The grits were advertised as being cheddar and jalapeño grits, but you couldn’t taste either of that. It tasted like plain, cold, grits. The baby back ribs were ok, but too salty. The same for the brisket. Cut the salt back by just a little and the flavor would have been fine. The brisket was surprisingly dry. Our waiter very proudly told us it was smoked for 14 hours, which it certainly was, but it must have sat under a heat lamp for too long because while the flavor was ok (but salty) it was dry as dust. After we finished, our waiter brought our bill right away. There was no offer of a dessert menu at all. All in all just an ok experience.
I liked the great food and service was great but I'm biased my name is Gus lol
Good food, great service and loud
Excellent service, ribs disappointing
Great food and experience. The pulled pork, brisket, and cornbread skillet were all fantastic. Will definitely be back.
sat at the inclosed patio was really great but music was too loud!!!
Overpriced for quantity (portion size) of entrees!
This was our first time dining in at Gus's Bar B Q and it did not disappoint. The food had good presentation. We ordered ribs and fried chicken and each had its own delightful flavors. The service was good and positive ambiance around.
We will return very soon!
the food was amazing. i would go back again with my friends and family.
i love the service. it was fast.
The only problem I had was that the margarita didn't taste good and I sent it back. I was told they were not able to make a Mai Tai????
the food was great and the service was good. i would go back
As a guy from Kansas City, I’ve been searching for a decent taste of home in LA BBQ. Gus’s is about as close as it comes. Burnt ends and ribs were fantastic! We’ll be back!!
mediocre bbq, dry meat, most of the entries too salty
good service and appetizers are way better than their main
I would give it 5 stars , but the wait time for a server, drinks and food too way too long. Luckily the food was fantastic and worth the wait. Maybe next time they will have more employees. I will go back
Accidentally made a reservation for the wrong day and they sat us right away. The food was great, the patio was warm on a chilly night and the staff were beyond friendly and helpful! This won’t be the first and last time here! We will be returning with more family and friends in the future!
Sides were good but the chicken fried steak was very disappointing. Very thin and fried like a $1.49 McChicken sandwich. If I owned the restaurant I would take it off the menu.
We came the Friday night before the grand opening. I loved the food, I loved the ambience & live musical and loved the service. But the side dishes seemed like they were cooked all day and a little overdone. The cream corn and the big beans seemed a little over done everything else was absolutely fantastic!!!!!!
