Guyers House - The Restaurant
Guyers House Restaurant: 2 AA Rosettes for the cooking and stars for friendliness and charm.
Set in this lovely old house is a restaurant of real distinction. Settle into the pretty dining room and choose from the menu of finely cooked modern British. These dishes are prepared by head chef Phillip Low and his team from the finest produce they can find including herbs, vegetables and fruit from our own kitchen garden and orchard.
With good weather they arranged a table outside.
Good location good food and great service.
Will be there again
I booked this place for a rare night away from our kids. I was attracted by the setting - an old country house with big fireplaces. Unfortunately, none of the fires were lit, even though it was mid-March. The dining room was very quiet, with two other couples in a rather formal environment (though, to be fair, it was a Monday night). The staff were lovely and welcoming, and the food was good and perfectly cooked. I was very disappointed by the lack of a fire, as it meant the room felt a bit dead. We were asked if we would like to take our coffee in the lounge - we agreed, thinking the fire would be on in there. We were disappointed again, despite there being a huge fireplace with a basket of logs at the ready. I had to sit by the radiator to keep warm.
The brasserie section looked a bit more lively, so I think I'd book there next time if we were to go again. The hotel guests/other diners seemed to be mainly retirees, so it was altogether a bit quiet for us but may be perfect for others. I can't fault the service but just disappointed at the lack of warmth/atmosphere.
