Very lively venue. Tables are situated close to the bar area and it can be noisy. Food nicely presented and very tasty. Roast beef was pink, tender and delicious, served with the usual accompaniments. Service was excellent, we were exceptionally well looked after.
Had a wonderful night, food was fantastic. Very nice friendly staff and a beautiful beer garden. The whole night was fantastic and would recommend to anyone.
Chose to go out at the last minute and Haig’s was handy. The staff couldn’t seem to find our booking but we were eventually seated.
The staff appeared to want us out ASAP as menus were brought before we got settled.
The menu is not extensive but was perfectly adequate. The chicken&haggis and roast pigeon were both excellent and reasonably priced. No issues there at all.
What was off putting was the very bright lighting and the noise, both from the piped music and background chatter. This is an ongoing issue at Haig’s which is a shame as it detracts from the quality of the food.
Overall a good meal but not a great dining experience.
Food was outstanding! Sat near the kitchen and saw a lot of other meals being prepared and all looked amazing!
Haifa is a good place for a get-together with family and friends, good atmosphere combined with good food. See you next time
Dined here for the first time last night. Service and food was outstanding. Would not recommend if you want a quiet meal. It wasn’t particularly busy but there were two parties in of 6 people each and it was so noisy. We had to move seat but then we were beside the bar and that was noisy too. If you want loud then this is the place to go. If you want to chat, take your time and enjoy the food, which was amazing, then this is not the place to go. I think the seating could have been better arranged to allow quiet tables but I think the focus has been on maximising covers.
Waiting staff were tremendous and very attentive.
Just enjoyed a lovely lunch at Haig's. I asked if I could have a smaller size of the vegetarian platter as it is normally for sharing. Got my own portion. Still very generous and very tasty. Love the homemade quiche, salad, bread and all the dips and sauces. I can highly recommend it. Great food.
This was the first time i been at Haigs Bar and Restaurant and we were made very welcome
will be going back with more friends next time to sample the beers and more great food
great food,if it was'nt for an experienced member of staff who looked after us before finishing her shift, this review would be a lot worse. The younger male staff on the bar seem to only care about serving their mates.
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal, will definitely be back
Good pub lunch. Nice surroundings and friendly staff. Service was a bit on the slow side, though.
Burgers at Haigs are lovely with Chucky 'skinny chips'. I had haggis with my burger and it was crispy and very hot. The waitress recommended the cocktail of a week and it did not disappoint.
Prices are good and the 3 waiting staff were courteous and friendly without being at us all the time.
Will definately return.
As locals, we have supported Haig's since it opened they and dined there on various occasions as we loved the restaurant. However, on Saturday 14 April we arrived early to enable us to have a drink at the bar. Whilst we appreciate that it was Saturday and there was a hen party in the bar, there were 3 members of staff serving the one person from the hen party. We were made to feel invisible with no apology or acknowledgement of our presence. When we finally go served, the bar maid disappeared whilst pouring a pint of Guinness with no explanation or apology. Apparently she need to change the barrell but didnt bother telling us this - leaving us standing at the bar waiting on our drinks. We thought that there was separate dining area for restaurant customers as there are 2 different menus but our waiter told us that this was not the case. We feel that the emphasis of Haig's is now a pub serving food rather than a bar and restaurant which is extremely disappointing. We also felt that the standard of food has fallen. 3 of our party had soup and previously it came with warmed butter and bread for each person but we were given no butter and 2 portions of bread for 3 people. The soup was also rather thin and tasteless - definitly not the usual standard. We also had to try and attract someones attention to order dessert and to order other drinks. The drinks too so long to arrive that we cancelled the order despite having asked when they would be arriving. Our waitress was surly and gave the impression she couldnt have cared less. As this was an outing for my birthday, I left feeling extremely disappointed and will definitley not be returning for the foreseeable future. A very disappointing and awful experience. I have emailed Haig's but they have not yet replied. Definitely would not recommend.
Never disappointed here , great food and service, we stayed nearly all day from 1:30
Booked table for Good Friday restaurant was busy staff very friendly and helpful. Chef and staff very understanding of my allergy. Good varied menu and good atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.
Had a very pleasant evening meal here. The food was delicious. Staff were friendly and efficient. Service was a little slow, but as we were chatting to friends, we didn’t mind too much. Liked the fact we had a booth and weren’t bothered by people walking past. Nice atmosphere with people of all ages.
Could do with changing menus or offering some specials
Great food and lovely atmosphere. Service was impeccable. Not often we get a quiet lunch without our kids but this was great.
Another vist and another great night... food was brilliant as to service on a busy sat night
Another lovely meal and excellent service as always x
Great meal and excellent service. Home made pate was stunning, loved the steak. A great cocktail menu too. Hannah and her team are very professional and friendly.
Open kitchen too, highly recommended
This is our 3rd visit to Haigs for Dinner and certainly doesn't disappoint. Staff are always attentive , friendly and attentive. Hannah, the bar Manager, always says hello. Fab atmosphere. Keep up the excellent food starndards guys.
Been before and no real complaints
Saturday night was very busy and sometimes felt I had to raise my voice a bit to have a conversation
Table 4 a bit wobbly, not a major issue but just needs sorting out
We throughly enjoyed our first visit...staff excellent food fabulous seating area lovely..highly recommend.
Sadly we didn't eat here. When we arrived it was very busy and noisy. We were given a small table near the door and where everyone entering the restaurant and bar would stand. We asked for another table but were told none were available. We saw there were other empty tables but were told these were booked - we were there first so why not give us one of them? We said there was no way we would sit at that table. We were asked if we'd like to book another evening. We declined. Had travelled a fair distance and were very disappointed. We obviously can't rate the restaurant but had to click something to give our review.
Waiting staff were excellent - very attentive. Food was great. Cocktails were fantastic. Definitely recommend
Service and food were fantastic....sensibly priced for Penicuik.
Would return again.
Was here for Valentines Evening, staff were very friendly and attentive always making sure you had enjoyed the course and keeping you topped up with water and drinks. The food was something else, I loved everything. Its a local gem and I will be sure to be back for food.
My second visit to Haig’s with friends for lunch. The food was great both times though felt that the pulled pork on my pitta was a bit dry. Couldn’t fault the fish and chips I had the first time though, it was excellent! I am happy to say that the service had improved since I was last there, the staff were more attentive this time. All staff were very welcoming and friendly. Would definitely recommend and have already booked to come back.
Yummy food, good service and lovely staff although they did forget our drinks a few times.
We will be back though!
Hi there the meal was very good apart from the steak it was ok not worth the £25 I paid for it . Steak was cooked ok but was not really tasty enough. Was a bit disappointed with all the onions , garlic etc piled on top of it made my steak a bit soggy.
A great all round experience. Really good atmosphere and decor and the food and service were both fantastic ! Nice spacing between courses as well. I will definitely be back, thank you !
This was our 2nd visit to Haigs and once again we were not disappointed. The food is fresh, tasty and very inventive. Service was again faultless even although the bar and restaurant were extremely busy. I would have no problems in recommending and this will become on of our normal places to eat.
Very relaxed evening. Superb service. Could probably condense the two menus, only one needed. Well done great place in Penicuik.
Good value food with efficient & friendly service. Nice cocktails and drinks too!
Although there was only a reduced menu on offer - it was a Scottish bank holiday - the food and service were excellent!
We loved our meal and drinks cocktails were amazing.
Food was good service was good . Only complaint was that we felt rushed by waitress to finish meal. Made booking for 8.30 pm we arrived early and were given our table ,which was excellent but she clearly felt pressured to have our table cleared by 9pm and was somewhat reluctant to serve us desserts. Surely they can't expect to be seated, served and finished a meal In 30 mins . If they want restaurant / kitchen area finished by 9pm then do not take bookings for 8.30pm.
This was our 2nd time dining. We booked in advance & pre advised that 2 of the party were lactose intolerant, our waiter made a point of highlighting this upon our being seated & advised that he would liaise with the chef as required - really nice touch!
The menu however meant all our party could eat without worry & the quality of the food as well as the presentation was of a standard you would find in a City eateries.
Would recommend Haig’s, will be back & I hope 2018 is a successful year for them!!
Came here on Saturday night for a catch up with my sister-in-law. Had been looking forward to seeing what all the fuss was about and sorry to say, was left disappointed and wouldn’t rush back. When we arrived, there was nobody to greet us like I’d expect in a restaurant, so had to get someone’s attention from the busy bar area. We were early but our table was ready - unfortunately right next to the kitchen but so be it. The waiter called ‘Peter’ took our jackets and I thought they were being taken to a secure cloakroom but soon turned out they were just hung up at the opposite end of restaurant near front door - I would have kept jacket with me if I’d known that was the case. We were then left for a good 10mins and eventually I had to ask ‘Peter’ for drinks menu - I did wait until he finished whatever he was doing on his mobile phone though! We ordered cocktails which were lovely and the meal was alright - the waiting staff were charming, very polite but just need that little bit more attentiveness. ‘Peter’ was a charmer with us girls and there was another young waiter (dark curly hair, glasses) who seemed nervous but very polite. That can’t be said for ‘Kieran’ - I went to the bar to order more cocktails and found him to be abrupt and he might not have been aware he did this, but he actually tutted. I just felt like asking for a cocktail was a hassle to him - we had to return a cocktail as just didn’t taste right (might have been a dirty glass as I know you had run out of glasses you use for the Woos Woos), and again, he came across as this being an inconvenience to him. Your barmaid Laura fixed the drinks and I found her to be very good - she didn’t fluster and resolved the problem because apparently she was the best at making these drinks. We sat in the bar area, which is really nice - but there was a loud bunch of 18 year olds in who started getting more rowdy as the evening continued and were eventually asked to leave by Hannah.
