Arrived 10 minutes early and Haikan was bustling but not heaving - didn’t get seated until 15 minutes after my reservation, so after I’d been waiting for 25 mins. The restaurant has a backwards system where folks at the walk-in counter can trump existing reservations, so about 8 walk-ins were seated before me.
Then: Ramen was fine, first tea was served cold, second tea was served watery (not enough matcha/not steeped enough.) Check was plunked down before dessert was even offered - probably to free up the counter space.
I suppose that’s DC hospitality for ya. Good value, convenient location, garbage service, mediocre ramen.
More vegetarian friendly options would be great. Otherwise really great!
7:15 reservation. Seated immediately. Proceeded to wait 20 minutes just for water. The waiter, after two apologies while running past us, finally came at 7:56. The food came out fast, though perhaps too fast, as the curry fries seemed to be missing the curry, and I found a piece of a plastic bag in my ramen. I told the waiter, whose reaction was along the lines of, “oh.” I hope she told the kitchen.
I brought a friend to Haikan and ate delicious food, as usual. However, I was disappointed by an interaction with an employee upon leaving: she approached us after we signed our checks and asked us to hurry up and leave because of a "2 hr policy" requiring us to leave and make room for other guests. Mind you, our reservation started at 6:30 pm and she hurried us out at 7:30 pm - even though we arrived early, we still had only been there for 1.5 hours. I understand the need for space, but she interrupted our conversation and was was very dismissive and rude about it. This wasn't the first time I felt disrespected by a staff member - my first time there, the waiter was extremely condescending to my party and we ended up leaving before eating. I hope Haikan trains its servers to be more courteous.
We've been to Haikan many times and have always enjoyed their food. This time, however, the overall experience was a bit of a miss. We were seated almost 40 minutes late for our reservation, served incorrect dishes and/or were missing parts of our order, and just in general felt like we were doing them a favor by being there. For example, because we were seated much later than our reservation, our dinner was longer during happy hour, so I had to get up and ask the waitress if we could still get the few dollar discount on the drinks we ordered. A very little thing but felt like they could have done a much better job apologizing for the wait and making us feel welcome.
Excellent selection of authentic ramen and a variety of other creative takes on this cuisine. Perfect place to go before or after a movie at Atlantic Plumbing.
Exceptional ramen. Great value. Veggie friendly. Go go go!
Ramen was outstanding. Broth subtle and complex while satisfying, noodles perfectly cooked. Side dishes were also fun and delicious. Service was ok, but a bit indifferent. But the food more than made up for it.
Absolutely the best ramen
Everything was great except we had to wait 30 min for a table when we had reservations. But it’s a small restaurant so I get it. Will absolutely keep recommending to everyone looking for DC Ramen.
Great atmosphere for a fun night
Shoyu ramen was a bit bland for my tastebuds, but still a fun little restaurant and I’ll give it another try.
All of the ramens we tried were great. and the happy hour specials were a bonus. Perfect pre-show spot before a concert at the 9:30. We will definitely be back!
I'm no expert on Sapporo style ramen, but wow was the food at Haikan incredible. The noodles were cooked to perfection and the broth was robust with flavor. Pro tip - order the veggie ramen with a veggie bomb and add ground pork. Our table had a few of the small plates as well. You've got to get the crab rangoons and the pig ears. So good!!!
Service was excellent.
Always consistently good food - prepared quickly. Good service. Nice to keep water pitchers on tables.
My Dad and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the Staff was so kind and considerate!
Great HH and Rose
I highly recommend Haikan. The food is original, fresh, flavorful and delicious! The beverages are great too. Haikan is a good place to go before or after seeing a movie at the theater nextdoor.
Wow, where do I start? The Hostess was nice but everything went downhill from there. From cold staff and getting the order wrong. This place used to be so good but it has taken a turn for the worst. My food was wrong and then the replacement was not that hot. Also, the table was dirty. Definitely will not go back.
The food was amazing! I got the vegetarian bowl, it was really really good. I also recommend the curry fries!! The food came out super fast and the service was very attentive. I’ll definitely be back.
Great ramen and appetizers/drinks but the service was awful! We weren’t too upset because it was a nice night and we were sat outside, but the service was incredibly slow.
Good Ramen in a great location. All the food was very hot and very fast. The drinks were unique and delicious. Great spot to grab dinner before a show at the 9:30 club. My party ordered a number of things and they were all really good.
I'll be going back soon.
Delicioso! Awesome ramen
We always enjoy, Haikan. The food and service are is dependably good. We had frozen Moscow Mules at one time, which were excellent. When are those going to be offered again? This latest visit was for my husband's and my anniversary and, once again, we were well taken care of.
Excellent food and drinks. Noise level is a little loud when the place is full on a Friday night, though I've been here on other nights during the week and it's not as loud and easier to catch up with friends then.
Went here for dinner during restaurant week to try their ramen flight. The food was delicious but the portion size was rather large for a "flight" where we could barely try the third bowl before getting it packed up to go.
Wish the veggie ramen had more white corn.
They had one server.
Most amazing Ramen evvvvvvvveeeerrrrr and great place staff is great I have already been 4 time in 3 months lol
Hands down the best Ramen I've had in DC. The Shio in particular is our favorite. The appetizers and cocktails are also reliably tasty.
Food was mediocre, wish there was more flavor and options. Hot A/C in the environment did not make it comfortable to eat in.
We were a huge group and I can’t say enough about how well Haikan accommodated us and were friendly at that!
This place is awesome! I would highly recommended it. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. I love the modern sleek ambiance. The staff was friendly. We can wait to go back.
The Shoyu Ramen was amazing. The broth was deep and full of flavor. The toppings complimented the broth really well. One of the best ramen spots in DC! The Crab Ragoon as an appetizer was delicious as well. The ambiance of the location was bustling, and a perfect spot to eat with friends.
It was fine. Nothing spectacular and although I made this reservation months ago, they tried to tell me for 20 minutes I didn’t have one - and actually it was that they were looking at the wrong date. The manager handled it but it was unnecessarily stressful.
We cannot say enough good about Haikan, which has been one of our favorites for the last year or two. The ramen is the best we've had in DC (and we've tried a number of the top places), the service is great, and a dinner for a family of 3 does not break the bank. We also love the energetic, youthful, accepting vibe -- although it trends towards a 20/30-something clientele, we're in our late 40s and never feel out of place. A nice bonus is the terrace when the weather is nice. A must try!
The food was delicious. We were seated right away, and the service was top notch. I love ramen, and look forward to my return!
