Hammer & Tongs
The Hammer & Tongs menu is centred around the traditional South African barbecue, known as a braai. Imported Sekelbos wood from Namibia is used to smoke the beef, pork, chicken and fish dishes, with delicacies including spiced pork belly skewers with apple and cider compote, and boerewors beef sausage served with homemade chutneys. The restaurant also bakes its own beer bread, and features a selection of gourmet salads for non meat eaters.
For pudding there are exotic sweet treats like chilli grilled pineapple with ginger ice cream and toasted coconut, while the bar mixes up all kinds of signature cocktails.
food was great and our waiter was really friendly, i gave it 4 stars because i didn’t like the desert, we got the chocolate moose and it was too bitter for me. other than that great food!
Thanks so much!
This place was recommended by a friend as a nice South African restaurant but I wouldn’t not be recommending it to my friends.
I made the reservation a week before Valentines Day and in that time I was more than a few times to confirm that we are still going.
We arrived 10 minutes before the time I booked and the place was full with no free tables so we were offered a table in their downstairs hall so we had to take it.
The ambience downstairs was not great. Dark, no decor, no nothing. Felt like you are in a dark room or garage or something.
Service was slow and the waiter didn’t seem very friendly.
The starter came quick because it was just a few slices of biltong but the main took over an hour to get ready. It was some grilled meats and they came cold, some undercooked some overcooked.
I definitely won’t be coming back anytime soon
Hi Stan, We are really sorry that your recent experience with us was not up to scratch. We would love for you to come back and try us again as we pride ourselves on excellent customer service and overall dining experience. Feel free to contact us directly!
Very nice food, the Braai was fantastic. Nice pale ale to go with it too.
Your feedback makes us very happy! Thanks so much.
An un heard of restaurant I think in Farringdon. Food is so good and wine lovely great for business lunches and not too expensive
Thanks so much Shif, Please come back again!
It's a great find for casual lunchtime dining. The steak was cooked well and the menu is simple and very tasty. There's nothing to fault. It is an unpretentious place offering good value and food.
I’m not sure if H&T just had a bad night but it took over an 1 hour and 30 mins to be served our food and when it came, it was cold. Of course by this point we were all starving so just ate. I think the food would have tasted a lot better had it been hot which is why I went down the middle with my score. On a positive note the chips were tasty and the cheese toasties (not sure the SA word for it) were great.
I found the service to be pretty bad, with lack of communication and extremely slow service not only on food but also drinks. I know another table complained that it had taken them over 20 minutes to be served some drinks.
Apart from a picture of nelson Mandela there wasn’t really a South African vibe which is something we were all hoping for. The music was chart music and slightly too loud.
A lot of wines were also out of stock that night.
Luckily we visited when it was 50% off food. Had it not been I would have been arguing for at least that.
Sadly the restaurant fell flat throughout the whole evening and did not meet expectations.
I would not recommend to friends nor would I visit again
Dear HJK, We are very sorry to hear that you did not have a good time at Hammer & Tongs. This is quite unlike us to have a day where food comes out cold, service is not up to scratch and chart music is played. We've made sure that none of this happens again. Please let us know if you would like to try us out again so we can show you what the experience is really like. Please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org and we will look after you.
Nice selection of meats! The service was good also a nice spot to catch up with friends!
The fries were absolutely spot on!
Great way to start the new year
Would recommend to anyone who likes their meat, will be back.
Overall good experience, I'll certainly go back at some point
We ordered one of the mid-size platters and the foot itself was fairly nice. I think I would have preferred a bit more flavour to the ribs and the belly pork, but I do think that may have been the style of cooking as it was barbecued well. The mini toasties themselves were divine.
The main issue was that we had a 18:45 reservation, and we were essentially forgotten (in a half full restaurant upstairs) so we had to wait 30minutes until someone took our order (at our own prompting) and then didn’t actually get any food until around 20:00.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is good and the staff themselves were very friendly.
Perhaps the delay in the food took away from how our experience was.
Food was amazing and presentation was really good. Really helpful in exchanging a few items on the platters for other things on the menu. Service slightly slow but always friendly. Had a lovely experience.
Brilliant food and friendly service
Absolutely amazing food definitely would recommend for everyone to try this if you’re a meat loved.
Really tasty meal. Baby Braii Platter & Malva Pudding a must! Great value too.
Great service great wine very good food. The restaurant could have nicer interior.
The wine selection is great and the cocktails are well priced. The food was ok. It was a braii so well cooked meat and a few sides. Great for sharing with friends
Big curly sausage was a bit dry. Overall good value and quite tasty.
Wow - bring your appetite. FAB-U- LOUS all round, we shall return when we feel hungry again! :)
Everything was very well cooked & flavoursome. Definitely recommend!
The BBQ was fantastic and you must try the Malva pudding and sorbet too.
Good value for money
Great evening catching up with friends. Food was lovely and would come again
The meet and greet can be improved as we stood around for a good 5 minutes waiting to get our reserved table. We were left to make our own way to the table downstairs and then were waved in the direction of a table to it took a while to ascertain which table was ours.
A further 15 min wait for our drinks order to be taken, we placed our meal order at the same time.
The food was excellent and perfectly cooked, the accompaniments were delicious and portions were plentiful. The wine list is extensive and exclusively South African, which is always a pleasure.
In the end the fantastic meal outweighed the distracted service and I would go again, but they could really invest in having a few more staff as they would definitely have been able to up-sell us starters and more drinks had service been more attentive and speedier.
Very nice meal, good food, good service, just very quiet, we were the only customers, we want to go back on a Saturday evening when i'm sure it will be busier.
Great atmosphere and vibe in the restaurant! Very relaxed place for a hearty meal
good interior in the cellar
food is good, but could have more character
Great braai restaurent and staff brill! Would definately return
Great food and wine with exceptional service as usual.
Excellent food, attentive service, maybe a tad pricey but not over the top. Would highly recommend to anybody that is a fan of barbecue and wants a change from American style. Could do with a bit more moisture (like a dipping sauce) to go with the mixed grill option but that is a minor compliant for what was a very good meal. 4.5 stars if Opentable had such an option.
Lovely restaurant with good food however we were the only people in the restaurant. Not sure if that’s only because this is a lore a dinner and weekend place rather than a midday week lunch? We didn’t mind too much as there was 8 of us so we created our own atmosphere.
I would recommend the sharing platters and also the apricot cake - it is essentially sticky toffee pudding!
Great food, especially meats. Fresh and really tasty. A wonderful choice of very good South African wines. Most enjoyable experience.
Excellent all round.
Authentic food and easy going atmosphere.
Food was great but restaurant was quiet so lacked atmosphere.
Intimate setting but the room did get a little Smokey!
Food was good and portions generous.
Brilliant South African food, incredibly authentic and a lovely environment. Friendly staff - what’s not to love !?
Genuine, unspoiled South African food of great quality and beautifully cooked. Lunchtime ambience, midweek, was quiet. The restaurant is elegant and service was cheerful, responsive and professional. Its not cheap but its good value for the area ond the quality. The wine list too is pure South African and has a sensible range at sensible prices. The owner is similarly cheerful and approachable. Well worth a visit.
Nice location and food was very good. It‘s worth the money and you for sure will not leave the restaurant hungry having paid too much. The service was excellent always helpful and open for our wishes. We will go there again. We were there at 19:30 on a Saturday and surprising it was not overcrowded so I guess you will find a place without reservation before. We liked it very much - a nice contrast to this expensive so called IN restaurants where you are paying more than 120 GBP for 2 and leaving it hungry and with damaged ears as it is too loud.
Lovely food, great value and very friendly service. Only downside was our clothes really smelt of smoke (from the cooking) afterwards, but at least it was an authentic braai!!
The meat is excellent quality and well prepared. Biltong was outstanding. Nice wine and cocktail selection. Service was friendly and efficient. A lot of food!!! Go hungry
