Hammer & Tongs
The Hammer & Tongs menu is centred around the traditional South African barbecue, known as a braai. Imported Sekelbos wood from Namibia is used to smoke the beef, pork, chicken and fish dishes, with delicacies including spiced pork belly skewers with apple and cider compote, and boerewors beef sausage served with homemade chutneys. The restaurant also bakes its own beer bread, and features a selection of gourmet salads for non meat eaters.
For pudding there are exotic sweet treats like chilli grilled pineapple with ginger ice cream and toasted coconut, while the bar mixes up all kinds of signature cocktails.

Very nice meal, good food, good service, just very quiet, we were the only customers, we want to go back on a Saturday evening when i'm sure it will be busier.
Great atmosphere and vibe in the restaurant! Very relaxed place for a hearty meal
good interior in the cellar
food is good, but could have more character
Great braai restaurent and staff brill! Would definately return
Great food and wine with exceptional service as usual.
Excellent food, attentive service, maybe a tad pricey but not over the top. Would highly recommend to anybody that is a fan of barbecue and wants a change from American style. Could do with a bit more moisture (like a dipping sauce) to go with the mixed grill option but that is a minor compliant for what was a very good meal. 4.5 stars if Opentable had such an option.
Lovely restaurant with good food however we were the only people in the restaurant. Not sure if that’s only because this is a lore a dinner and weekend place rather than a midday week lunch? We didn’t mind too much as there was 8 of us so we created our own atmosphere.
I would recommend the sharing platters and also the apricot cake - it is essentially sticky toffee pudding!
Great food, especially meats. Fresh and really tasty. A wonderful choice of very good South African wines. Most enjoyable experience.
Excellent all round.
Authentic food and easy going atmosphere.
Food was great but restaurant was quiet so lacked atmosphere.
Brilliant South African food, incredibly authentic and a lovely environment. Friendly staff - what’s not to love !?
Genuine, unspoiled South African food of great quality and beautifully cooked. Lunchtime ambience, midweek, was quiet. The restaurant is elegant and service was cheerful, responsive and professional. Its not cheap but its good value for the area ond the quality. The wine list too is pure South African and has a sensible range at sensible prices. The owner is similarly cheerful and approachable. Well worth a visit.
Nice location and food was very good. It‘s worth the money and you for sure will not leave the restaurant hungry having paid too much. The service was excellent always helpful and open for our wishes. We will go there again. We were there at 19:30 on a Saturday and surprising it was not overcrowded so I guess you will find a place without reservation before. We liked it very much - a nice contrast to this expensive so called IN restaurants where you are paying more than 120 GBP for 2 and leaving it hungry and with damaged ears as it is too loud.
Lovely food, great value and very friendly service. Only downside was our clothes really smelt of smoke (from the cooking) afterwards, but at least it was an authentic braai!!
The meat is excellent quality and well prepared. Biltong was outstanding. Nice wine and cocktail selection. Service was friendly and efficient. A lot of food!!! Go hungry
I LOVE THIS PLACE. The food is amazing. The steak beats Gaucho, Hawksmoor and anywhere else. It's amazing.
I’d been looking at this place a long time and finally pulled the trigger on going. The pics look great on Facebook and I had to try it. We ordered our own platter of sorts instead of their options. We had a 450 rib on bone, prawn skewer, boarwoer and chicken wings. The prawns were fantastic but the rest was average, in fact the wings were like the chicken you get in a supermarket hotbox. The steak was the most dissapointing as it had none of the smoky flavour you would expect from a braai and was just flavourless in general.
A great South African bbq place. Very simple, good food.
We bought the most high priced platter but it wasn’t big enough and we didn’t find it as good as our expectations from the menu etc. be prepared to pay £50pp
Excellent food, especially the meaty dishes. Would recommend.
Too expensive for what it servers. Good service tho
Nice really good drinks and excellent service
We couldn't help feeling that quite a few tricks were missed here. To start, the decor and atmosphere is really lacking - the only hint to it being a South African restaurant was a solitary picture of a Rhino on the wall. The drinks menu had no SA beers (but to be fair, there was plenty of SA wine).
The food was very tasty but VERY expensive for what you get.
In all, we both felt totally underwhelmed by the whole experience.
A great South African BBQ theme, with Real south African wood shipped in to feed the wood fired BBQ
The waiter was friendly and knowledgeable, helping guide us through some of the more unusual items on the menu.
The combination of foods on the platter we shared was excellent, and the Couscous side salad exceptional.
All the items on a combination platter are available separately, if you know exactly what you want, but for me a carefully chosen combination was a very welcome way to try some new things.
These platters come in different sizes (2, 4 or 6 people) and are correctly sized for generous adult portions.
I can imagine three men managing to finish a 4 person platter, but they would need to be HUNGRY
Will certainly be back if I am in the area, they are open for lunch 12-3, which give me more chance....
Fantastic food, lovely staff, ensure you are hungry as the portions are substantial.
Lovely atmosphere, excellent food, waitresses were warm and inviting. Couldn't have asked for a more perfect date night.
Good food and great selection. Was quiet for a Friday night but great service. Would recommend.
An authentic South African meal awaits you. All cooked on the open fire. Even the wood is shipped in from SA to gice tgat special smell ypu eill know if you have grown up in SA.
Supurb wine list.
I've been here a few times and each and every occasion has been spectacular. Great service, fantastic flavours in all their dishes and for a reasonable price. Its a hidden gem that needs to be everyones favourite
Great experience, very friendly staff. Food is worth it, lots to choose from. Would recommend mixing and sharing, the non meat options are also delicious - definitely worth trying a few of them!
Second visit here. They removed the lamb skewers from the menu, which was previously the best item. Ribeye was still great, but everything else was quite dry and average this time. Still 'good' just because of the steak alone, otherwise, a bit forgettable.
Great evening. Food was awesome. Service was timely and personal.
The food was out of this world. Staff are friendly and helpful. Will be recommending this to everyone I know in the London Area.
Went there for lunch with my family and received excellent service from the staff. The food was quite tasty as well but I will say maybe a bit expensive. The cocktails were delicious!
Excellent food in a casual and relaxed environment. Server was very knowledgeable and helped us navigate the menu. First visit and definitely will not be the last.
A wonderful modern yet cosy restaurant which takes a south african twist on the every popular barbecue. The food was cooked perfectly with the pork belly and t-bone steak in the Big Braai being particularly noteworthy. The Braai platters offer plenty of variety and everything works well with each other with the sides being deceptively filling.
The flavours are different as opposed to being ground breaking which is a positive thing, especially if you are after a different way to enjoy an array of meats roasted on a fire. Hammer & Tongs is staffed by wonderfully welcoming and thoughtful waiters and waitresses who are more than happy to explain the items on the menu and suggest pairings as well as portion sizes. We ordered the Big Braai (3-4 people suggested) along with 2 mains and a side for a group of 5 which was perfect on the suggest of our waitress.
Fantastic place for almost any occasion and definitely will be back!
Really enjoyed the fantastic grilled meats, super service and all round great place
A lively indoor braai. The sharing platters are excellent and a good sample of how well South Africans cook meat. Be sure to add the Cape Malay curry. The wine list is good value for London with some hard to find SA gems. Save the clean up and have your barbecue here instead of your rain soaked back garden.
Big Brai enough for 3/4 as said,
chicken skewer, sandwich thing and boerwors all a bit meh
T-bone steak and prawns excellent, pork belly also.
Good puds. Malva and sorbet v tasty. Good staff. Didn’t need third bottle of red.
Curried fish was aweful... we ended up paying eventhough we eat it... as the taste awefully acidic. I was told it was a new chef. Will not host any ad my south africans there again.
