Went to the hare & hounds November 2 for lunch with 2 friends, spent a very relaxing afternoon. I had fish pie. Followed by a chocolate & orange cheese cake, would defiantly recommend both. Going again in December.
I and my friends enjoyed our first foray into 'The Barn' and enjoyed the welcome, the food and the ambiance. We will return.
We have been on several occasions and it never fails us for service and food remains the best restaurant in Newbury!
Nice. Close to Watermill theatre. Nice choice of food, service good. Could offer another veggie/vegan option. Lovely coffee.
Bit disappointed this time.
One of our group ordered the curry which was dry and bland. Rice which was served with it was cold and clumped together. The nan bread ordered as an accompaniment was tiny !!
In fairness to the staff they took the cost of this meal off the bill and as always were really efficient and friendly.
Pre and post meal we sat in the bar but this was really noisey due to other groups.
Having used this venue many times in the past we were a bit disappointed this time.
Been here a few times for Sunday lunch and usually it is very very good. A few small niggles this time though. They had sold out of one of the 3 meats offered for Sunday Roasts by 2pm which is a pain as my wife really only likes to go there for their Turkey Roast dinners. Dining room was busy but service was quite slow. Especially once the dining room started to empty which we found strange. A lot of the waiting staff seemed to disappear once the dinners left and ordering deserts and getting the bill we had to chase up staff as we were hoping not to be at lunch for the 2 hours that it took eventually from start to finish. If we hadn't chased them up we could have been even longer. We requested the bill twice before it eventually came as we were putting our coats on ready top leave and pay on exit. Food we had was very good as per usual just a bit disappointed that they ran out of items on the menu and the service was slower than usual.
Lovely light, spacious and comfortable dining area. Great service and lunch pre-theatre.
Good pre-theatre venue. Good menu choice and quality of food.
Our first time visit to The H and H. We were very impressed in all respects. Ideal for our mid way family meet ups. Will certainly go again.
Excellent food, friendly staff good value and excellent surroundings, what more could you ask for, best restaurant in Newbury!
As usual the food and service was extremely good. They also were hosting a wedding the day we met friends there and the bar was full but still we had excellent food and service with a smile.
Top notch food and service. Excellent atmosphere. Would highly recommend it
Nice pub, staff really helpful and friendly, service great, but vegetarian food a bit odd. Combination not really work. Would go again for meeting for afternoon tea/a drink though.
Celebrated Mum's 70th Birthday here :) - the staff were so charming and nothing was too much trouble. Fantastic value for money! we will certainly come again and look forward to attending one of the Comedy Night events...
Only problem is that not totally disabled friendly as from the disabled parking place, and ther is only one, there are 2 steps down to the restaurant level, its ok for some one with a stick or walker, but a wheelchair would find it difficult..
Definitely recommend nothing too much trouble, have gluten free and vegetarian options.
Lovely atmosphere. Lush food and great service. Will defo be back!
Food was ok, had an issue with a steak portion size but this was pur right by the staff immediately. A bit too pricey for what you get. As it was their ‘steak night’ we expected something different or special from their everyday menu, but no. The same but just with a slightly better deal.
Another excellent meal with family. Great service and value for money.
Had a lovely meal with family - staff were brilliant and very friendly! Great with kids too, looking forward to visiting again!
relaxed, easy, very good staff, very nice food and stylish withal!
Only problem was noisy laughter from nearby table, which we avoided eventually by going to lounge.
We had a lovely meal to celebrate a family birthday. Service was excellent. Good atmosphere.
Love going to the hare and hounds food always good staff very friendly
Excellent service, I had the Sea Bass which was delicious. Never disappointed with this venue
As always the food is superb. The Barn is a fantastic place to eat and the background music is unobtrusive. This makes it a great place to eat and have a conversation at the same time.
The Barn is cosy and intimate and the staff are extremely helpful. This is a place where we love to go to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries.
Good food, good service at a sensible price. Really nothing more to add!
Having lived within a mile of the hotel for the past 25yrs but never having dined there we thought we would give it a try for out wedding anniversary. Booking was simple and efficient, the food was plentiful and well cooked and very tasty. The only negative comment would be that the fish pie did not taste that fresh.
We had menu envy as we saw what others had ordered and in turn that will tempt us back for more.
Overall a very nice dining experience.
We spent a lovely weekend here in February and since then it has been our regular halfway meeting place. It's always special for us and we love to come back.
We had a lovely time, it was my husband’s birthday, with the sister he has only just met after 60 years. It was the perfect location, so thank you and your staff so much.
Had a nice get together. Service was great. All the food was nice, although I was disappointed by the dopiaza curry, which had very little onion (dopiaza means double onion) and was not very spicy.
We will be coming back as the location is great for us and the general experience was good
A friendly welcome from both the bar manager and the waitress. We came for the lobsters and were not disappointed. They were delicious and well presented. One of our party of four ordered a burger which arrived with chips with the skin-on; so he requested ordinary chips from another waiter. Unfortunately they never arrived. Apart from this, we enjoyed a lovely meal.
Had the most amazing lobster and strawberries.
Rubarb gin and elderflower tonic a must.
The service was excellent and no rushing. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we had a lovely evening.
Will definitely be returning
Excellent food with friendly staff and prompt service,
Met for lunch with old friends. Good food, great service, great ambience. What more could one want?
Nicely spaced tables in the barn. Food was of good portion size and not expensive. Ribs and burger were both very good. Service was quick and attentive. Free jug of water instead of insisting on buying bottled water.
Not the first time we have been to this lovely restaurant. Always made welcome , good choice of food and service has been very good. All in all a pleasant experience.
We enjoyed an excellent three-course meal for two for an anniverary celebration.
Despite a large group at a nearby table for part of our meal, the atmosphere was very relaxed, and enjoyable.
I started with a very good paté which was served with toast and a generous serving of chutney and a well-dressed salad. My wife had the fishcakes which went down equally well.
We both followed with the rump steak with peppercorn and brandy sauce and home cooked chips. My medium-rare and my wife's medium were both cooked to perfection and very tender. The sauce was superb - rich, but not in a way that overwhelmed the other flavours.
Dessert brought us a Kiwi and Mango merigne dish, and an Eton mess, both of which were very tasty, but a third course proved rather too filling for us to complete!
The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They even brought us a small post-dessert plate of brownies and strawberries with "Happy Anniversary" written in coulis.
Father’s Day we had 6 dining was lovely , turkey was dry but all the other food was spot on , veg was lovely gravy yummy , staff very kind and friendly service , no waiting around
All in all great day will go again , went for my birthday too it was lovely , I live in south glos and dad in fareham so good half way meet up
This is the best Sunday dinner I have had in Newbury definitely 5🌟
Had a meal at the Hare and Hounds after seeing a show at the Watermill Theatre.
The restaurant is big and airy and the tables are not too close together which allows for conversation with your partner.
Service was welcoming and efficient.
Our meals were delicious....and huge! No room for desert sadly.
Will definitely return.
