Love going to the hare and hounds food always good staff very friendly
Excellent service, I had the Sea Bass which was delicious. Never disappointed with this venue
As always the food is superb. The Barn is a fantastic place to eat and the background music is unobtrusive. This makes it a great place to eat and have a conversation at the same time.
The Barn is cosy and intimate and the staff are extremely helpful. This is a place where we love to go to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries.
Good food, good service at a sensible price. Really nothing more to add!
Having lived within a mile of the hotel for the past 25yrs but never having dined there we thought we would give it a try for out wedding anniversary. Booking was simple and efficient, the food was plentiful and well cooked and very tasty. The only negative comment would be that the fish pie did not taste that fresh.
We had menu envy as we saw what others had ordered and in turn that will tempt us back for more.
Overall a very nice dining experience.
We spent a lovely weekend here in February and since then it has been our regular halfway meeting place. It's always special for us and we love to come back.
We had a lovely time, it was my husband’s birthday, with the sister he has only just met after 60 years. It was the perfect location, so thank you and your staff so much.
Had a nice get together. Service was great. All the food was nice, although I was disappointed by the dopiaza curry, which had very little onion (dopiaza means double onion) and was not very spicy.
We will be coming back as the location is great for us and the general experience was good
A friendly welcome from both the bar manager and the waitress. We came for the lobsters and were not disappointed. They were delicious and well presented. One of our party of four ordered a burger which arrived with chips with the skin-on; so he requested ordinary chips from another waiter. Unfortunately they never arrived. Apart from this, we enjoyed a lovely meal.
Had the most amazing lobster and strawberries.
Rubarb gin and elderflower tonic a must.
The service was excellent and no rushing. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we had a lovely evening.
Will definitely be returning
Excellent food with friendly staff and prompt service,
Met for lunch with old friends. Good food, great service, great ambience. What more could one want?
Nicely spaced tables in the barn. Food was of good portion size and not expensive. Ribs and burger were both very good. Service was quick and attentive. Free jug of water instead of insisting on buying bottled water.
Not the first time we have been to this lovely restaurant. Always made welcome , good choice of food and service has been very good. All in all a pleasant experience.
We enjoyed an excellent three-course meal for two for an anniverary celebration.
Despite a large group at a nearby table for part of our meal, the atmosphere was very relaxed, and enjoyable.
I started with a very good paté which was served with toast and a generous serving of chutney and a well-dressed salad. My wife had the fishcakes which went down equally well.
We both followed with the rump steak with peppercorn and brandy sauce and home cooked chips. My medium-rare and my wife's medium were both cooked to perfection and very tender. The sauce was superb - rich, but not in a way that overwhelmed the other flavours.
Dessert brought us a Kiwi and Mango merigne dish, and an Eton mess, both of which were very tasty, but a third course proved rather too filling for us to complete!
The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They even brought us a small post-dessert plate of brownies and strawberries with "Happy Anniversary" written in coulis.
Father’s Day we had 6 dining was lovely , turkey was dry but all the other food was spot on , veg was lovely gravy yummy , staff very kind and friendly service , no waiting around
All in all great day will go again , went for my birthday too it was lovely , I live in south glos and dad in fareham so good half way meet up
This is the best Sunday dinner I have had in Newbury definitely 5🌟
Had a meal at the Hare and Hounds after seeing a show at the Watermill Theatre.
The restaurant is big and airy and the tables are not too close together which allows for conversation with your partner.
Service was welcoming and efficient.
Our meals were delicious....and huge! No room for desert sadly.
Will definitely return.
Good food and friendly unhurried service .Waitress was attentive but not pushy .
We booked Sunday lunch en route home from a Newbury Festival weekend. We couldn't have picked a better venue, food/drink/service all above average.
Sunday lunch was acceptable food but nothing to write home about. Vegetables were sparse.. one small oval dish for four of us. The restaurant was very pleasant and service was good. We did not stay for dessert .
Our spare ribs and lamb were both tough. It was a shame as our starters were lovely.
After a dissapointing Christmas meal here i decided to try again and unfortunately i wont be trying again. The quality of the roast turkey was less than expected with a miniscule amount of over microwaved vegetables that quite honestly left a lot to be desired...no cream avaialble for puddings as they had run out. Hare and Hounds you really need to up your game i used to recommend you but i wont be from now on as the food was really of a low standard. Staff were far less than attentive than usual i think you have seriously taken your eyes off the ball .
Excellent food very friendly staff highly recommended
We all enjoyed the food and thought that it was good value for what we payed would certainly eat here again
Visited for a late Sunday lunch whilst staying in the area. Good welcome restaurant has a nice ambiance. Enjoyed a 3 course meal including a roast dinner. Really enjoyed the food and it was good value for money. Service was friendly and good.
2 out of 3 meals were ok. I had surf and turf, balanced on a plate too small to cut anything. I ordered the steak medium rare, but came cooked more like medium well done and was very tough. The prawns were cold and I am not sure the salt and pepper squid was on the plate. I did mention the problem with the steak and we weren’t charged for the desserts, but the main course spoiled the meal. I have eaten there before and always had a good meal,
The food was very good. The thing that let us down was the service. It took over 30 minutes to place our order and another 20 minutes for the starters to arrive. I do appreciate it was fairly busy however this is no excuse as they should have planned better for this or at least say there is a wait. No acknowledgement for the delay.
Really enjoyed Easter Sunday lunch here. Food was good, service was good and surroundings really nice. A relaxed atmosphere ...we enjoyed the three course set menu , which had plenty to choose from. My friend is a vegetarian and she was happy with her choice too...the baileys cheese packs with cream or ice cream was lovely 😊 I had prawn starter that was nice too , the roast beef I chose for main course was so nice and the portion of meat was plentiful.
Great food and great room but the service, while acceptable, was functional rather than friendly.
Very pleasant experience with great food and service. Would definitely go again.
A stunning venue supported by excellent well prepared food.
Thoroughly enjoyed our Friday night meal. Fillet steak was delicious. Only criticism was we didn’t receive one of the vegetable side order we ordered, otherwise excellent service and food in a very nice environment.
Wonderful evening spent with family, this is really becoming my go to restaurant. Always good value and great food.
I have been to the barn before with a group of people (Christmas) it was the first time I have been when it is quite and with just my wife. The food was good, the service was good, but there was one thing that wasn’t so good. The music, to the point of annoying. Remember, this is only our opinion, whilst a selection of music is ok, songs from the the 1950’ were not easy listening. For example “Love and Marriage” and some old jazz music to the Batman Theme, was annoying. We are in our late 50’ and it was not for us, so not sure what the younger generation think of the selection of music. Otherwise a really nice meal.
Great dining experience, good food selection, friendly atmosphere, lovely decor, attentive staff. Overall great evening. 👍
Love everything about the hare and hound. We will be back
My steak was cooked to perfection and the staff were friendly and attentive. It is always a pleasure to dine here.
Great service and the food was lovely.
Slow roasted pork shoulder is a must and the crumble dessert!
Devine food. Every course was superb ( Valentine's menu) the beef was melt in the mouth. Trio of desserts out of this world.
Tables well laid out, roaring fire, rose on each table. It was very very special. Well be back!
