Very nice meal at Hawkyn's, good service and food was presented well. We'll certainly make a return visit!
For the first time ever in all my visits to Hawkyns, I was served food that was barely warm. Whether it was the samosas or the crab or the daal or veggie or chicken... all of it was bordering on cold. Spoilt the taste of food because Indian food should never be served cold, it’s an insult. Due to Covid placing many businesses in difficulties, we didn’t complain but now that you ask, I have to say that this is no way to serve, especially to loyal customers.
Had the tasting menu, with matching wines ,was very good, there was one extra a little chickpea stack ,ok but nothing special ,the wines got better as we preceded through menu.Hawkyns restaurant is in the Crown pub so is not an intimate setting .Overall the food was very good ,service was good.
Food was amazing. Lovely and quiet. Staff were friendly without being overbearing and didn’t feel rushed
Good food but way too quick! Hardly had chance to breath in between courses!
Excellent Indian food, served quickly and efficiently.
The service wasn’t very good but the food was very tasty. Given that it’s a special occasion- priced restaurant, it wasn’t good value.
Small portions compared to Indian Essence in Petts Wood and the toilets definitely need a little TLC... not good to see a metal toilet brush rusting way in a corner and a topped up hand wash
Nice atmosphere staff attentive but felt the food was lacking. On arrival was presented with an appetiser dokra beautiful flavours.
Was excited with prospect of ordering from the menu.
Unfortunately did not feel the food delivered.
We ordered the soft shell crab & peppered lamb which was good nice flavours.
Mains chicken biryani which was nice & fragrant.
& lucknowi beef which was like a deconstructed roast.
The beef was bought out medium rare would’ve been good to have asked how do you like it cooked.
Wasn’t overwhelmed by the food & would rather pay more & go to Benares.
Been here beforehand and they bought a lovely little treat for my boyfriend. This has definitely become a regular spot for us.
The service wasn’t very good! Twice I asked for more mango chutney with our poppadoms which overall took around 15mins to get having to ask twice to two different people? Plus the jar they serviced it in was so small for one person but they assume it should serve for 4 people?! We had to ask for more poppadoms as they only served a few which are tiny in size! Not enough for four people!
I ordered black dhal but didn’t get it! Even though the waiter asked us if we wanted any sides? And I said yea black dhal!
It was our first time eating here and we wasn’t that impressed as the Marlowe restaurant we went to was so much better! The tables also didn’t look like they were 2 metres apart as they were very close and no screens up!
The tasting menu was excellent this was a return visit and finding it had been tweaked with some different dishes was a nice surprise.
First time eating here for our anniversary. Vegetarian option not brilliant and definitely overpriced.
Really surprised to see that I had to use toilet tissue to wipe my hands after washing as no other form of towels available and no hand dryer. Not what you expect at any reasonable restaurant.
We had a wonderful stay at the Crown and had the taster menu on the Sunday evening. Food was outstanding, so fresh , vibrant and tasty.
We also had the pleasure of meeting chef Atul Kochhar the night before .
Would definitely recommend and love to come again .
Unfortunately, there were issues with timing of food.
The food is great and there are very unique dishes. The only improvement I would suggest is adjusting the spice of the veg main course up as the mix veg dish tasted sweet/bland.
Great food and service
Nice tasting menu and good value with the eat in to help out discount. Choice of mains and third course. We preferred the lamb main to the beef (supplement) as the beef a bit chewy with a line of gristle. Chocolate and raspberry dessert a nice way to end the meal, although I'm not a fan of rose petals! Would go again, perhaps when the menu changes.
Fantastic food in a great setting. Covid aware also.
Overall very good, had the tasting menu which was really good, although the rabbit wasn't available which was a disappointment. Fair value, and good staff.
Food was great, unorganised service and a lack of attention to detail.
Opted for the tasting menu which provided a good selection of the menu. Food was okay, but lacking in flavour for us. Was disappointed with the service, felt like it was paced for the couple next us even though they ordered much earlier than we did. We told our waiter that we were going out for some air so that they could hold the final course and then came back to the table to find our dessert with the ice cream melting. Not the service I expect of any restaurant, let alone one of this price.
Always top quality beautifully presented
Nice atmosphere. very good service.
A little dark at our table which didn't help menu reading.
Enjoyed the choice of food and the meal was lovely.
Excellent food. Did tasting menu and on another night the a la carte menu. Both were delicious and good value. Currently still doing the Eat out to help our discount themselves which makes it even better value! Good atmosphere even on a weekday evening.
Decided to try the tasting menu as hadn't been before. Lovely experience to taste beautifully cooked food.
As always excellent dining with good service. But concerned at the closeness of the tables. Appreciate it is only a small dining area
Excellent booking process. They were very understanding when we warned them that we were stuck in traffic and would be a little late. Comfortable, spacious seating with good safety precautions. Excellent food as always with some really authentic flavours and some of the best grilled salmon I’ve had in a long time.
Excellent evening! Staff were very attentive
Lovely food and great service but total lack of ambiance. The Crown is a lovely old building but the decor was poor and the lighting way too bright.
The food was delicious and I’m keen to go back. With the special offer, it was great value too for the quality of the food. Our party had the duck breast main, the railway lamb curry and the chicken biryani. All were very tasty and we were pleased with our choices.
Great food - well priced. Attentive service in the difficult Covid conditions. Accommodated my husband's request to adjust a menu dish to meet his taste without fuss.
Meal was good we had the tasting menu, samosas were incredible! However we were left somewhat confused at the end when getting our bill. The Eat Out to Help Out had been extended so we were looking forward to taking advantage of this. However when we presented our gift voucher (we had been gifted a birthday meal) the bill was recalculated and the eat out offer was taken off? Somehow the staff failed to understand the concept of a gift voucher!! A gift voucher is NOT a discount as they called it. A gift voucher is where cash has been pre-paid to be used at the venue for a later date. The full amount has been paid. I’m not sure how this can be so difficult to understand or why the restaurant would refuse us the Eat Out to Help Out offer just because part of our payment was pre-paid?! Please can someone explain this logic as there was no discount involved with this process?
Wonderful tasting menu meal and thank you for continuing the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme making our meal good value. The staff were excellent. Would eat here again soon.
Great food and service. Felt very safe in regards to Covid 19.
if one likes spice then this is a place to eat, food nicely presented and portions sizes just right for me as one a small eater but for someone who is a big eater or very hungry then have some nan bread but extra cost and can add up to ones budget so be prepared
I’ve eaten here a few times now and twice in the past few days. It’s a good experience from the moment you walk in. A committed team, keen to get you comfortable and served. An excellent menu and a reasonably good wine list.
Stars for me are the Beef pepper fry and the Samosa from the starters; Railway Lamb curry and the Chicken curry from the mains. Good heat, nicely spiced.
I think the staff are excellent and remember you from visit to visit. Service is quick and professional. Portion sizes are good.
It’s a real local star for Indian food far outclasssing and mock Indian food of the local takeaways.
Hawkyns does takeaway too. I used it once in lockdown. Really excellent.
A good all round standard for a local curry house. Not worthy of a ‘star name’ and not a must visit
Easy to book through Open Table and helpful reminders
Pleasant attentive service - not over the top.
Well paced meal- no rush
Quality of food excellent and good sized portions.
This is curry with a difference- there is heat but overwhelming feature is the taste of the different spaces and the key ingredients
Great value with the eat out to help out offer extended by Hawkyns
Great food and service. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Will be back.
