I've been here a couple of times before, and it's OK. Nothing outstanding. The lighting is awful - pretty bright which doesn't do anything for the ambiance of the place. The food was OK, my leg of lamb looked like it had been slopped on the plate - one-half meat, one-half peas, that was it. Irish coffee came lukewarm in a red wine glass - odd. Prawn cocktail was 6 prawns on a massive mattress of lettuce with a ton of sauce plopped on top. Luckily we were pretty tipsy by the time we ate....which also numbed the pain of a £200 bill. Such a shame as we had high hopes for it upping the standards of restaurants in East Grinstead when it opened - tbh I'd rather go to Prezzo or a nice country pub in future.
Busy Saturday but good service. Problem with wine dealt with quickly.
Friendly and polite staff, with excellent person centred skills. Food very good, but some of the dishes served could have a little more refined presentation. I would recommed this restaurant. Lovely for a romantic meal of meal with friends.
We dined in the restaurant for a special occasion. Food was excellent: staff very welcoming and efficient. They even went the extra mile with an indoor firework candle 🎂 for my wife’s Birthday for which I owe them a big thank you. Nice surprise: how did they know?!? Good background music from the bar without being too loud. A great experience- would thoroughly recommend.
Absolutely lovely meal and great service! The wine was also very good!
Overall an excellent experience and we will defiantly return and recommend
The lighting was terrible. Like a day centre.
The starter looked awful on a silver platter and tiny. Terrible value.
The champagne ordered was from East Anglia!
Chateaubriand was great.
Overall, terrible value and won’t be repeated.
The service was great and menu options very good.
Down side was the prawn cocktail.it had a very strong vinegar taste and the lettuce was very soggy and only 4 prawns.
Great evening , quality food and nice round table in corner .
Really enjoyed my second trip. Glad you’ve sectioned off the bar from the restaurant - makes for a much cosier feel to the place. Have to credit our waiter for being outstanding in terms of service and making our visit so good. From food recommendations through to Limoncello shots he was the best (so sorry can’t remember name but he was from Hungary - not Italy 😂 - so he should know who he is! )
Walked into the restaurant and cocktail bar felt comfortable straight away. Was brought through from the bar to the restaurant and got seated. Had a lovely atmosphere and the food was amazing worth the money and my cocktail was lovely and I tried something new. I don't normally do reviews but would definitely recommend Hay and Straw to anyone.
Great service as always. I should specifically mention Dora who always makes visiting Hay & Straw such a pleasure. So welcoming & attentive.
The standard of the service does not match the quality of the food and drinks.
We had to ask for everything, we were not even offered black pepper
Service was haphazard with dishes being removed before we were ready even when we said we were still working on them.
My 89 year old mother in law was not allowed to order the children’s meal she wanted so ordered a very small tuna steak very well done. I ordered the tuna steak done medium rare. When they were brought out the waitress couldn’t tell which steak was which. My mother in law ate very little of hers so a lot was wasted.
The food was actually not bad but the overall experience was lacking.
Needs better trained staff at all levels to be efficient and attentive but unobtrusive.
Cocktail bar and dining area is separate, which is a really good set up. restaurant decor is very “on point” at the moment, smart, elegant and modern. Food was extremely nice, with a good variety of choices for food and drinks/cocktails. I would recommend a visit, Welcome addition to the East Grinstead High Street. I will certainly be returning.
Have had a drink at the Hay and Straw a few times before and found it very enjoyable and relaxing.
We ate in the restaurant for the first time last Friday ( 9th August ). I must say the whole evening was wonderful, great front of house service, excellent food and wine, and a great singer.
In today's market a £100.00 bill for a great meal and 2 bottles of wine ain't bad.
We ate from the specials menu and it was value for money and had good choices.
Terrible food, terrible service. Not ones to complain but it really was a terrible experience start to finish. Will never return.
First visit , good choice of cocktails and drinks, decent range of choice of food, staff friendly. One of our starters was poor and had bit of issue getting it resolved but overall a good evening
The food was delicious but when we asked for oil or butter for the bread none was recieved. Extra table water was not brought. A sharing meal for 3 was not supplied only for 2. Had ask for a steak knife. I would hope on a second visit these issue were just a once off.
Overall our dining experience was pleasant. The staff were friendly and the restaurant is clean, sophisticated and trendy. We went for the set lunch menu 2 courses for £12.50 which was a good price but selection was very limited. One member of the party was concerned about the taste of her fish and has unfortunately subsequently been poorly since.
But overall we had a lovely lunch just what we were looking for a place to relax and catch up.
The service was slow and unfriendly. I was told I couldn’t have a glass of Sauvignon blanc, I had to buy a £30.00 bottle or not have it at all. My dinner was dry and tasteless and no one asked if everything was alright. At the prices charged I would have expected a far better meal and service. Very disappointed.
Lovely food and staff. Music was out of keeping with the image of the restaurant and too loud.
We were 1 of 3 tables in the restaurant on the Saturday, I presume that's why there was not a table reserved for us. We got to chose the table we wanted to sit on.
There was 2 people serving in the restaurant and one in the bar. The service wasn't great considering there were not many tables occupied in the restaurant., but there were another few tables occupied at the front for drinks and snacks but they were not run off their feet.
The food was good but I waited for over 10 minutes for them to come with the card machine to pay. The bar man and one of the waitresses were oblivious to our table whilst they chatted.
In the end I went to the bar to pay. I was celebrating my birthday and put it on the reservation on Open Table, which they obviously hadn't viewed and I'm not one to mention my birthday directly. Hence not saying anything.
Service definitely needs to be improved
Beautifully cooked and presented food. Lovely staff. Excellent value. Would highly recommend.
My partner and I decided to go for a quiet early dinner on a Thursday and decided to try out the Hat we also ordered the truffle and parmesan chips as a side to share. Both our meals were delicious, though I know my partner would sing the praises of the chips for the rest of his life if he could. We were really happy with the portion sizes and the quality so we decided to splash out for a dessert...well, I did. I had the melt-in-the-middle chocolate dessert which was delicious! Unfortunately the waiter did not know much about the Herbal Spirits that were on the menu, but he was kind enough to and ask the bar staff, and the other half ended up trying one at random, the Fernet Branca, and thought it was lovely, but very strong! Paid the bill and belatedly realised there had been a mistake, and the side that should have been included in the price of the Schnitzel had been added on as a separate side. Silly us should have noticed before we paid! But we flagged down the waiter and explained the mistake, and once he had checked it he gave us a refund for the overcharge; it was only £4.00 but it was well resolved and we were sent on our way feeling very good about the whole experience. Would definitely go again but we would try and go at the same time of day as it was filling up by the time we were leaving.
There were three of us. Two had great meals and I should have followed my instinct and had fish! Because those meals were successful. I had the lamb shank and asked for mash potato instead of mushy peas. The mash potato came out looking and tasting like it was instant mash/Smash! The lamb was braised to death which is a shame considering this restaurant is actually in an area where lamb is on your doorstep- so it should be amazing! It was a wedding anniversary which I made a note of mentioning up on reserving - no free drink or even dessert celebrating. Normally this isn't an issue but this is a place pretends it is near michelin star but it does not act like it nor is the food of that quality. It also has a dress code on the website - it clearly only wants rich well off clientele but their food and service does not reflect. On par with a Pizza Express or Cote (although Cote is better). Disappointing and will not be going back. I will say - there cocktails are good.
Very good restaurant with lovely staff and great food!
Meal was very average. Steak had to be sent back because it wasn’t edible. Even when it came back it came back without its sides and they didn’t even give us a new knife and fork! The re cooked steak wasn’t much better either to be honest.
It was too crowded. Too many tables and too close together. I have a hearing problem, so with tables SO close to together it was difficult to hear my partners voice. With music in the background too, it was too noisy. The table itself wasn't big enough to hold all the dishes, glad we didn't have wine too, as there would have been nowhere to put it.
We object to the 'discretionary' added 10% service tip. How can it be 'discretionary' if it is added on the final bill? Add 5p to every dish and then the service charge would be covered....it isn't difficult! Then people might leave a tip as well...then the right people (waiters) are much better off!! When leaving it was difficult to get out as all ways to the door we were nearly bumping into other customers shoulders, including those in the bar area. The man behind me couldn't move his chair in any closer to his table to allow me to push mine back to get out. Food was ok, but with such a small table (all the two seated tables by the wall are the same, my partner found it impossible to eat his dish as he couldn't move his elbows. Not worth trying to get so many in people at the discomfort of the customers. Not a wonderful experience.....and won't go there again.
Generally enjoyed our second visit to H&S. The main thing was that once again both the food and service were good and didn't disappoint. Our only criticism would be that we had expected linen tablecloths for the evening service. We assume that this must be a cost-cutting measure even though the restaurant was full and well-patronised with at least two sittings.
Excellent waiter, the place was busy but he tried hard to attend to everyone. The waitress however appeared disinterested and not happy to be there. Was asked her several times to bring us sauces but nothing arrived.
Food was very good.
Needs to expand the cocktail menu as the one I asked for was not available.
It's a new restaurant with a few glitches but would go back and suggest it to friends.
Great looking bar area as you walk in, with comfy places to sit and a good drinks menu. Restaurant is at the back, large and well set out. We had a round table which is good when there are a few of you. It did get quite noisy and was difficult at times to hear what each other were saying. The menu is fantastic, lots of choice and delicious sounding dishes. We shared some starters and the calamari was soft and tasty. I had the monkfish curry, which was nice but lacked a punch and the rice a little soggy. My friend had the cod and said it was delicious. Great desserts and good choice. Hit and miss with the waiting staff...a charming waiter, but a very grumpy waitress who didn’t smile.
The price was extremely reasonable at under £40pp for us all to have three course, two bottles of wine and the odd cocktail.
Will be back.
Food was of a high standard &, in most cases, reasonably priced. I had a Hay & Straw burger which was well cooked & tasted really good. Good chunky chips too. My wife had a prawn & monkfish curry which was nice but a little disappointing as to spice. Needed a bit more !
Service was pretty terrible, not one waiter looking after each table so we were asked the same thing several times and still we still had to ask twice.
When we asked for another order of drinks from the waitress clearing our table she behaved as though we were mad and she was far too busy.
When I said at the start I was coeliac so needed gluten free, and could they advise which dishes I could have, the waiter seemed annoyed and said steak or salad!
The waitress put bread on our table and my friend said I was coeliac so was there any gluten free for me, the reply was a straight ‘no’. With a look of why would we even be asking?
I asked again for what I would like from the menu and could it be made gluten free, and this time was confirmed I could have the risotto to start and then tuna.
My friends main course of cod came out with my side of broccoli but no main course for me. Her cod was almost raw.
She had to send it back, they took it to the kitchen and came back a few minutes later with her used knife and fork and ‘plonked’ them in front of her and walked off.
Both main courses eventually arrived, her’s straight from the microwave!
Mine overdone but fine.
It’s was busy and had a good atmosphere, the drinks were good, some of the waiting staff were trying really hard and clearly good at their jobs. Others didn’t want to be there and clearly didn’t realise their job involved service.
The decor of fake plastic plants hanging from the ceiling and dividing walls was a curious choice.
I am all for a living wall, but a plastic one?! Why would you do that?!
Toilets were already falling apart and in a poor state.
What shame, this could have been so good, East Grinstead needed a great new restaurant.
This certainly isn’t it.
Hay & Straw has an Ivy type feel. Very good menu with a range of options from formal to light. Price very reasonable.
Good atmosphere and good service for both food and drinks.
Everything about Hay and Straw in average, not bad but not brilliant. It’s a bit over priced for average food. I can think of better places to go in the area. I also won’t be using ‘Open Table’ again. It gave me the impression that the restaurant was full and this was the only time available. Some of my family weren’t able to make the earlier time (only time that was available on this site) and cancelled. We arrived to find the restaurant wasn’t even 10% full. Very frustrating. I will call directly, if there is a next time.
Good food, wide selection of drinks, service was a little underwhelming though the lady running front of house made up for some of that by noticing how I looked and the food when something was missing from the table and coming straight over to deal with the issue.
Poor quality food. Service was poor too! Had music from the bar section competing with the music from the restaurant which resulted in having two songs playing at the same time. Would not recommend.
1st visit, 4 of us arrived at 8.30pm for our booking and had to wait a short while at the bar for our table! Live singer and music playing which was good. Great ambience, lovely food and good service. Will definitely return soon.
Sorry to be a bit negative but....We did have a lovely evening but I feel I need to pass this message on:- Too many casual drinkers at the bar meaning diners had nowhere to stand whilst waiting for their table. This pretty much carried on throughout the evening - it wasnt just us that had this problem. The 2 sitting system used by the restaurant meant, on the evening we visited, that tables were busy when the next sitting arrived. The main course I had (carbonara) was not the best but my partner really enjoyed her starter and main. Wine was somewhat overpriced (£38 or £58 a bottle for an average rose that would cost £12 on the high street) as were some of the dishes (£12 for a scallop starter). Dinner and pre dinner drinks worked out at £55 per head which is a bit heavy for what we got. Need to sort out the bar to make it fun for me but I’m sure you’ll do really well going forward. Good luck.
