Always lovely food, we had roast dinner, but the portions sizes are soo big, I felt guilty waisting so much food. We have booked to come abs have lunch on Christmas Day. Great service. Thanks
Expensive for what comes out of the kitchen.
While you wait bread and dips arrived with the starter, nit whilst we waited for the starter. The Filet steak was ordered as medium, came out well done, dry and charred. We ordered peppercorn sauce, it was gravy with green peppercorns, very salty and tasted awful. The chips were greasy, hard and the worst I’ve ever had. The menus said it comes with mushrooms and plumb tomatoes. There were 2 mushrooms and a slice of tomato.
£88.00 for the starter and main course, disgraceful, the chef needs to learn how to cook! This was supposed to be a birthday treat, we will never be going there again!
Arrived on time , had to wait a few minutes before anybody came to reception, but very efficiently dealt with.
Great place to dine , staff friendly and affable .
Two ordered the pork belly starter , but it was more like a terrine . Not bad just not expected cold pork belly , and a bit bland .
Everything else was lovely, will continue to go .
I had high hopes after waiting quite some time to eat here. I am disappointed to say the least.
Selection of breads was only two types. One was clearly heated back in the oven/microwave as was soggy on top and dry/stale.
Couldn't tell anyone as no staff came back over until mains came over and our entree plate was still on the table.
Portions for main of trio of lamb was extremely small with one of the trio being an inch long 'goujon' (but cooked and presented well). No staff came to check to see how our meals were but to be honest with the small size, it didn't take long to consume.
After waiting at least 30 minutes with empty plates, we had to get the attention of someone even though three waiting staff had been near and looked at the table.
When initially ordering we were not offered any accompaniments, so left feeling hungry.
In summary: overpriced, small portions with the liberty of being charged for inadequate service.
Scallops to start with a the Beef wellington cooked to perfection!
Our first restaurant meal since before lockdown 2020 and we returned to an old favourite for my husband's birthday. The quality of the food is excellent and the menu varied and with good gluten free options.
The refurbishment is nice, tables well spaced but still with a cosy feel. waiting staff were friendly and efficient. definitely back on the regular visit list.
I’d heard good things about the restaurant so thought we would give it a try.
Arrived for an evening meal on Sunday and was told that a few items on menu weren’t available.
We both had a starter and then a Sunday roast with two drinks each.
When the bill arrived I Thought it was rather expensive and over rated for what it was!
On arrival our table wasn’t ready, but we were asked if we wanted to wait in the gardens and our drinks order was taken and served. Our waitress stopped for a natter and was very friendly. We were shown to our table when our table was ready, which was by the window and the seats we found to be comfortable and well lite. We chose oysters for starters which came with a lovely selection of dressings. Our main course was served in good time after starters and was cooked to perfection. The waiting staff were attentive, but not intrusive. The cheese board was well balanced with just the right amount of crackers and the dark chocolate cheesecake left me feeling a little giddy.
We have decided we will make a regular reservation as it was a perfect evening.
Sunday Lunch perhaps a little pricey and there was a wait for the food.
5of us went Sunday lunchtime, staff are all very nice, I chose sea trout which was very nice, everyone else opted for the Sunday roast, there was quite a lot of it and the meat apparently was nice but the vegetables looked very over cooked and were inedible. The roast potatoes were impossible to cut as was the yorkshire pudding. We are not planning a return visit
There were 4 of us and we had roast dinners, the meat was excellent but the rest was awful and we complained, it came to the table and was only tepid , not hot as should be, the roast potatoes were hard and the veg were not much better the Yorkshire puddings were burnt and only warm. They did give us a desert for free and that was very good. The service from the waiters was good and friendly but sorry the food was not.
Sunday roast, was amazing
Nice place , food was ok ,for the price I felt the standard did not reflect the price
Great food, lovely ambience and friendly and helpful staff. If you fancy somewhere nice to dine with a little class then the Hengist is the place to go.
Great food and service - thank you, we look forward to returning
Fantastic location, great service and very tasty food......BUT Tiny portions. The 3 Lamb cuts main course was small for £20, The cheese plate for £9:00 was just as small! No I didnt complain as was on a date night but would think hard before returning. Over all great food just not enough of it!!
Lunchtime menu was very good and value for money. A donation to a local charity was a good idea.
Midweek lunchtime. weather glorious, which always helps! setting is very nice with greenery and the river close by. We dined outside, very quiet, it did appear a little busier inside. Toilet facilities were good and clean although let down a little by the notice to sanitise on way out-but there being no sanitiser in the bottle, we just used our own anyway. The food was well cooked, well presented.A little top heavy price wise for what was actually on the plate, would have like to have seen some choice of potato served with the main courses, although could be purchased as a side dish. The starter and dessert menu-cannot particularly recommend, they were a little unimaginative. We had scallops -the 3 scallops served were overpowered by the choritzo and nothing special, but quite edible and at £12 could have been better. The port terriene was ok. Desserts, for us much too much emphasis on anything chocolate but may suit others just fine. We chose all al la carte but noticed that the ‘meal of the day’ type menu looked in many ways nicer and at £20 if the food quality held up looked worth trying.
As regular diners at The Hengist, we are always very pleased with all aspects of the venue. We enjoy dining at The Hengist and consider the waiting staff to be our friends, rather than servers.
The food was delicious for the quality as we expected.
Friendly staff, good service, food served and cooked to perfection , thank you
Very good restaurant. My guests enjoyed the salmon dish and I enjoyed the chicken. Also desserts were good. Bread was a bit ordinary and not very generous. However the tapenade served with it was delicious. We had the set lunch menu and I found it good value. Service by attractive girls was excellent. Willling to explain what tapenade was and explain all the other dishes. Appreciated not being charged for tap water in a jug.
The menu wasn’t the usual menu and the food was not at all what we were expecting or wanted. Extremely disappointing visit and if the waitress hadn’t told us it was a ‘special menu’ for the bank holiday we would never have returned. The offering of kebabs was served on nasty grease proof gingham style paper! Still fine dining restaurant prices for a ‘dirty fry’ basket meal style menu…
Lovely food! Cook to perfection and table service and mocktail making was brilliant!
I've been coming to this restaurant for years, what a change, Sat upstairs, looked like a school canteen, no table cloths, food was OK.but when the waiter came to collect our plates, he accidentally spilt gravy over my daughters head, which was not good, he went all over her head, top, jeans & seat, to say she was not happy is a understatement, don't think I will be going again.
great meal and service, have eaten here a few times now and never been disappointed
The service and food were as wonderful as ever, will be back again soon!
Good service. Good food. Lovely surroundings (Outside eating area). Good value for money.
Excellent food, as always. I’ve been to this restaurant dozens of times, and have never been disappointed.
The food was great and the staff were lovely. Thanks for a lovely lunch
Have been before one of our favourites, prefer to sit upstairs, a bit more private, don't like to much sitting in a row of tables too close to other guests, felt slightly cramped downstairs within that row of 4 tables, but will always return because food is so good and generally attracts quality diners.
I can honestly say I enjoyed a very high quality roast beef lunch at the Hengest last weekend.
The staff were very attentive but not overpowering. The food was prepared to a very high standard and very enjoyable to eat.
Thank you all for our lovely Sunday lunch
Dinner last night at the Hengist. Chilled atmosphere, calm attentive service. We shared the beef wellington, which was cooked to perfection. Can thoroughly recommend.
Lovely food, wonderful service.
Highly recommend Hengist
We always have a lovely meal at the Hengist, and Steak night never disappoints.
Had a really lovely lunch here. We finally managed to get our grandad out he had had a stroke not long before. the staff are very friendly and accommodating. even after my 7 month old twins mess with them trying food. The steak was overdone but that was rectified quickly. And the food was really good x
We really enjoyed our time here and would be looking to come back again soon x
Love this place. We’ve been going for roughly 18 years.
The service outstanding
Tom smashed the cocktails
Always so friendly and welcoming.
Lovely evening and great venue and food as always. Staff looked after us well and look forward to coming back soon.
Excellent service and staff were very attentive. Afternoon tea was excellent.
Food and service excellent, visited several times now.
