The service was very good and the food was excellent
Never fails! We've been a few times now and always have an amazing night. Great food, great service, lovely restaurant will definitely be coming back again.
Great food. Great service. Lovely surroundings. A real gem in aylesford for higher end quality food.
Whilst the restaurant looked lovely it was very cold and drafty. We were the only people in the restaurant but when we asked if we could move away from the door the manager was clearly not impressed. Later the table next to ours asked if the heating could be tuned up but was told “No, it’s set at 30”. If this was the case the heating clearly was not working -There is a log burner but that was not in use? Service left a little to be desired with our starters being served before we had barely started a sharing board. Throughout the meal staff repeatedly leaned across to place meals on the opposite side of the table. One member of our party had a pot of tea, the milk arrived in an expresso cup which made it nigh on impossible not to spill and the cup, saucer and tea pot needed a good wash, the lid was dirty and the inside, spout and rim of the teapot were heavily stained. When we asked for a clean cup the waiter merely wiped the cup out and returned it to our table!. We have been to the Hengist before (a number of years ago) and it was fab so quite disappointed with this experience and I do not think we shall return, which is a shame as it is local.
So glad this restaurant has survived the various lockdowns - it’s a hidden gem!
Never fails to please - tasty & varied menu, innovative cocktails fab serving staff & lovely setting!!
Can’t wait to return (& it’s even worth the long wait on the A2 - to reach the Hengist)!
great food, nice atmosphere great service, good value
Steak was delicious. Cooked just a requested. Great selection of wines and other drinks to choose from too.
A luke warm starter followed by an awful bit of sirloin steak. When I told the server it wasn’t nice, it could barely be cut with a steak knife, I was just told she would tell the chef.
Unfortunately we won’t return, which is a shame as pre-COVID we had a nice meal here but this time around it was not nice.
Love steak night
Came for the TravelZoo lunch offer. The service, food and atmosphere was great. Thank you. We’ll be back again soon.
First time for me, absolutely loved the ambiance and decor. Pornstar martinis were amazing as was the food. Service was on point and nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely return !! Awesome birthday meal .
Fantastic food and service, perfect for a catch up with friends.
Had another great meal and excellent service again thank you for a great night
Oh what a disappointment. Having checked out the a la carte menu and pricing I thought it would be a fine dining experience. Instead it was water stained cutlery, paper serviette, a daily pasta dish that they didn’t have the ingredients to make 5 minutes after they told me what it was and I had ordered and eventually a main meal that was cold instead of piping hot. Such a shame as the restaurant has real potential to be great.
First time we had dined at the Hengist and really impressed. Very nice interior and extremely attentive polite staff. The ambience was very relaxed but at the same time to a high standard of decor and cleanliness and very good service. Food was enjoyed by all the diners at our table and we will definitely be going back.
An exceptional dining experience. The service was absolutely second to none with staff going above and beyond. The food was equally impressive. There were a couple of items ordered that were unavailable (which we didn’t find out until the waiter returned after taking our order) but he dealt with this very well, and the alternative option proved to be a better choice.
I can genuinely say that this is one of the nicest meals I have had, equal to dining at the finest of restaurants.
Truly wowed and can’t wait to get back for another fix!
Food was amazing, and was not overpriced at all. Cocktails lovely as always and the chef allowed us to swap around some of the dishes on the menu as they ran out of fillet steak which was great. The family can’t wait to go back for more food in the new year
I've always been a fan of this restaurant but unfortunately after the last 2 visits it has left me feeling not very positive. The food has unfortunately been overpriced and underpar £15 for 3 tiny cold scallops as a starter and a fillet that arrived overdone when I asked for medium rare. Also the ambiance is lacking the music 🎶 needs changing possibly to some soulful chilled house vibes anything but the current playlist and also turn it up as yiu can everyone else's conversation. Also the restaurant is running at half capacity so should be no excuses with regards to food quality hopefully they improve in the future
The service was amazing, the food was out of this world. Me and my wife eat out a lot, and I can honestly say it was the best food we have ever eaten. We will definitely be returning
Appalling food. Steak sent back as massively undercooked. Came back 30 minutes later even worse.
Taste and quality was not worthy of the prices. Bland food with odd flavour combinations.
Atrocious service. Drinks left on bar for 25 minutes that we had to eventually collect ourselves. Disinterested service would be a good description.
This used to be a great restaurant renowned for fine dining. The ambiance of the place remains the same but it has fallen a very long way from its previous high standards.
Food use to be great but poor now. Fondant potatoe hard. Ravioli too thick and bread stale.
We loved our evening. Great food and service. Definitely recommend.
Restaurant was virtually empty and both the waiter and waitress walked past us a few times but no one came to ask if we would like to order a drink. I had to catch their eye and ask if I could order a drink and was met with a yes and a blank look! I had to ask Dr or a menu and wax handed the menu for afternoon tea and had to ask for a drinks menu.
Food was lovely and the afternoon tea was good value for money.
We had to ask to ask for another drink and the tea also but other than that it was ok. I think tip being added to bill for a party of three is presumptuous particularly when service is OK at best.
Nice seating arrangement, food good value for money.
Good menu, at lunchtime choice between value set menu and normal ala carte.
It’s one of our regular places, because we love it. The food and service is always excellent. Two things I think could be improved are the toilets, they’re not very clean, and the outside area could have heating and seating!
I've eaten at the hengist multiple times and honestly rate it highly and would always recommend it to friends and family as the place to go for a nice meal. However, the roast (on the first Sunday we attended) was very sub par. Potato's had obviously been sat around for a while and were over cooked / tough (same for the yorkshire pudding). We ordered a side of truffle chips and received normal hand cut chips that were VERY over cooked and tough. As an ex chef (who has worked at the hengist) I have a lot of respect and understanding for the work these guys put in, the menu is normally outstanding which is why I'm surprised and somewhat dissapointed that the roast was bad in almost all areas. Hopefully just a one off!
The beef Wellington was to die for.
Gorgeous meal and service as always.
Meeting another couple for lunch, who were a little late - which may have caused some hesitancy in our waitress, who almost certainly would have sold us a couple of aperitifs if she’d approached. Once we were assembled, however, the service was excellent, as was the lunch. We were well looked after, and the bill was very reasonable.
Always have a good meal there. You get what you pay for
Good service all round, nice surroundings, attentive staff, thank you
The Hengist is a great place. Wonderful atmosphere and very helpful staff. I had contacted the restaurant beforehand as I am vegan and also gluten sensitive to see if they had an alternative (there was one vegan dish but that was pasta which I am unable to eat) for me but never got a reply. However, when we arrived the chef was able to make a vegan, gluten free dish.
Staff were welcoming and attentive throughout our time at the Hengist.
Very good, 1st time at restaurant, impressed with food…..compliments to the chef!
Amazing food and a beautiful restaurant, staff were fantastic, can’t say enough good things about the hengist!
Had Sunday lunch at The Hengist and we were very underwhelmed!!
We were taken to the upstairs dining room which had absolutely no atmosphere and looked a little like a works canteen.
Service was good - charming waitress and the wine was delicious. Found the menu limited - not enough choice - I like fish but there was only monkfish on offer. We settled for the roast which was ok although the salmon starter and desserts were delicious. Overall not impressed - overpriced menu with shabby decor - won't be back.
Great food staff very friendly all in all a very pleasant experience
Lovely food , good service, lovely building but lacked warmth. And So made it uncomfortable. Lighting the fire would add to the atmosphere
Wouldn’t really know it was Christmas
Restaurant was ok, staff could of been a bit more welcoming
Not many decorations have been put up for Xmas
The food and drink was over priced for the poor quality, we don’t mind paying more if it is worth it. My food was heavily salted which did not enhance the flavours at all, making the food unpleasant. We won’t be going back nor recommend anyone to go sadly.
First visit, lovely comfy table with a relaxing atmosphere. Choice of food and wine was excellent and our choices were of a very high standard.
Have rebooked for afternoon tea
