A little disappointed regarding Covid precautions. The entrance was very busy and crowded with staff coming and going and it didn't seem possible to keep away from others. No obvious hand sanitation available; if it was, we weren't encouraged to use it, although we did use our own. Cutlery handled by staff, and although the table we sat on felt as though social distancing had been considered, the staff seem to not be so aware. My meal was really lovely - the trout, although the portion size of my husband's seemed a little mean - a small chicken breast in place of a spatchcock chicken. The Hengist is one of our favourite local restaurants and we do recommend it to others, so we shall return, but not just yet.
I had grilled lobster and a pornstar martini. Both were delicious. Highly recommend Hengist.
Beautiful food as always and it felt very safe, organised and friendly. Can’t wait to visit again
Would have got 5 stars but service was slow and not very attentive.
Was disappointed to say the least, after booking the day before arrival and calling that evening to check booking, I got a phone call an hour before me and my friend was due to arrive at your restaurant from a very abrupt lady telling me in no uncertain terms that they do not accept the groupon and where not doing cream teas due to Covid, after she continued to say we don’t accept vouchers but you can still buy them made no sense, I still decided to come as it was for my friends 30th birthday, we arrived waited a little while for a menu, then while waiting they brought another table out a cream tea much to my confusion I approached staff asking why I would told no cream tea and they said we are doing bottom less cream teas that must be booked 24hrs in advance so I had gone from them not being available to being available confusing, I had booked more then 24hrs notice so when I said about it the lady checked if there was enough food to cater for us, we decided against the cream tea in the end as was going to cost double of what I had paid for the voucher, we ordered a few starters and sides to share along with 2 kids meals, when these arrived the lady was extremely rude and not interested in us as customers, she was miserable so wouldn’t be surprised if this was the lady I spoke to on the phone, as all other staff where very nice and friendly. When plates where cleared I was asked if we wanted more drinks and I said yes please, I never received this drink and was disappointed as it was a hot day and we where thirsty. After this we just wanted to leave after seeing how expensive the meal was we was hugely disappointed as we would of expected more for nearly £70 better service and atmosphere. I know covid is terrible and we are all being careful but this experience has put me off the restaurant. I’ve been coming to you for years for meals, cream teas, party’s etc and was expecting a lot more as restaurant always been fab. Hugely disappointed,
I can’t knock the food. Service was terrible. Clearly gave our table away and then just told us to go and sit anywhere. Then left us for 25 minutes with no drinks. Then the starters came out and we had no cutlery and still no drinks. Once the drinks came we were a little happier. Mains came out in a reasonable time at which point we ordered more drinks.... another 20 minutes before they came out. Once we asked for the bill that again took a further 15 minutes to come out (after asking for it from another waitress)
Very poor service which seemed like undertrained youngsters dropped in the deep end. Food was fantastic, but we won’t be going back. For £120 for two of us I’d expect a little more organisation. If you’re happy to wait an age for a drink and have zero time constraints then you may enjoy it more. But for us it’s a no.
Lovely food, great service. Lovely setting. Happy and comfortable that all measures are being taken for social distancing.
My wife and I had the most amazing meal, lovely atmosphere friendly stuff.
Cant wait to go again
Great night out they did well. Had a very pleasant distancing meal
It was good to be back out... the restaurant did very well keeping everyone apart...
Very good service and food but a limited menu due to virus but it was totally relaxing in a great setting
Had a very nice evening celebrating my wifes birthday. Staff were very attentive food was good & i feel reasonably priced. A nice touch with the little birthday cake st the end.
We went on Wednesday evening for steak night, the food was delicious and a great price.
Staff were all fantastic and friendly and very attentive.
Will definitely be back soon!
It was a joy to be back in Hangist again,
all my friends was having a good time.
Fantastic food enough said 😊
Our meal was acceptable. However my partner asked for a fillet steak Well done and it arrived quite rare. The overall price was quite acceptable.
We were taken upstairs to a dated poorly decorated room with no ambience or any decoration or music.
Forgotten about and told after we had made our choice from the menu what we had chosen was no longer available
We then heard all the diners around us doing the same.
Asked for condiments when the food was brought out, the condiments arrived when we finished our food.
A steak, a burger, a soft drink and a shandy. £70!
Terrible value for money!
Always find the Hengist to be relaxed, and well catered for by staff. Drinks, and food, are always presented to a high standard. No, just a slice of lemon in my gin! We sat on the garden on this occasion and received good service. Always felt like we were not hanging around to place our drinks, and food order. We will be back! Steak night next!!
Birthday meal for my triplets, Hengist had done them a little Happy Birthday plate each which was a lovely touch. Waitress was new but great.
Great service ... awful choice of menu and food not good enough to match the price...
First visit and wont be last.
Good food and nice atmosphere and the service was first class. Our waitress ,I believe was called Nelly was polite attentive and again first class. That makes the experience of dining so much more enjoyable. Thank you Nelly.
Will be back and would recommend.
I had a waitress serve me who looked extremely young to be serving alcohol, who also got my order wrong. And when I got my steak cooked, I asked for medium well which came out pretty rare. It really put me off my food as my steak was re heated and cooked slightly more; which changed the flavouring of it. Not what I expect for a £30 worth of steak. Will not be coming here for food again.
You sent an menu with the booking confirmation but when arrived different and so minimal with 3 salads on starters and only other choice sharing platter, burger was over cooked and very dry , Lobster thermidore had butter only on ?? Not happy at all
Very poor meal. Limited menu. Bad wine. We simply didn't enjoy it. Wont be going back.
After spending approximately 2/3 months in lock down my I decided to treat my wife .
On arrival the staff were enthusiastic but that’s the highlight!
After being sat near a dirty window in the corner we were then waited on after what seemed an age..
very dissatisfied with the size of the steak for £30 ? To be honest I have had better service and food at a beefeater .
Sorry not very good .
The menu given when booking was no where near the same as the menu on arrival. I understand that the menu had been reduced due to COVID-19 but this should have been said at the time of the booking. The sweet options were “ice cream, sorbet or Eton mess”, I could have had those at home. Overall unfortunately, we were very disappointed. It felt like a very expensive meal for no atmosphere, no real food choices and an extremely over priced and blandly cooked lobster. We have been to the Hengist before and unfortunately with each visit we have been less and less inclined to go back. This will have been our last visit. Very sad as on our first visit we were super impressed. The services was amazing and the food was too but sadly this seems to have gone downhill.
I feel slightly guilty about leaving a bad review as I have eaten here quite a few times and it’s usually good. However, post-Covid the menu has been slimmed down and the choices are limited and not interesting. Also, the quality was very average. I had the £40 lobster thermadore and it was flavourless, with a very weak butter. Also, if you are having Lobster and chips then they should be crispy, not underdone.
Step it up please.
Staff were super friendly and attentive, Olivia and Daria were very chatty with us and this was lovely. The food was superb, only 1 vegetarian option so was sceptical but was delicious! Would recommend to all friends and family
First class meet and greet, service excellent, food very good, we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.
Love this place! Great location, lovely staff. Very clean and service is very good. Food is excellent!
Poor management of CoVID, no social distancing and staff not wearing masks or gloves . Lots of drunk girls and lads
Very disappointed by the menu. It was nothing like what you have on your website and is therefore not an incentive to come again
Nice venue, good and attentive service. A good varied menu. Would have preferred a more comprehensive wine list choice other than French. I don't think I would like to visit with large parties in attendance, but that could be said of most venues.
A memorable birthday evening at The Hengist. The scallops, the venison, and the line caught sea bass were delicious and the ambience was perfect for a Monday evening celebration. The service was excellent and welcoming, also we definitely recommend the crumble and the creme brulee for the perfect finish. All in all, a most enjoyable experience.
Me and my husband like the hengist been a few Times food is always nice and everyone is so welcoming
We had booked to see the musician, was taken upstairs we thought we would hear him over the speakers , but this was not the case so they moved us downstairs! Thank you. We were served warm prosecco , we didn’t complain and then the wrong red wine they did offer to change it but it tasted ok so we kept it. The food was ok not exceptional my husband had a plum crumble for dessert , it was more like plum soup and he bit Into a whole star anise which was not pleasant. The musician was brilliant and the place had a lovely atmosphere with pleasant staff but they were very young and not very attentive, especially as they add a 10% service charge to the bill.
nice ambience, good food, excellent service and reasonably priced. Who wouldn't recommend a venue like the Hengist.
When booked I was not informed it was “steak night” when investigating before the fish was our option as this was my wife’s birthday and she loves fish. When I asked at the restaurant about other menus all he said is “it’s steak night” with no other options we both had the rump steak my wife couldn’t even cut her steak and I struggled we told the waiter and changed my wife’s knife still no joy so she left 70 percent not wanting to ruin the evening and make a scene we paid and left I am extremely disappointed with this I booked this to celebrate my wife’s birthday and failed because of your restaurant
Had Sunday lunch with our family. The food was very good in the main and overall value was very good based upon the two or three set course menu. Main courses were excellent. Several of the starters were very nice although the Brixham potted crab starter was a little disappointing. as the flavour of the crab was lost in making it into more of a mousse consistency. The drinks order at the outset was slow and a little confused. Some of the deserts were good but the chocolate ice cream was not that great.
So overall. some things were done really well whilst some things leave some room to further improve.
