First visit and wont be last.
Good food and nice atmosphere and the service was first class. Our waitress ,I believe was called Nelly was polite attentive and again first class. That makes the experience of dining so much more enjoyable. Thank you Nelly.
Will be back and would recommend.

I had a waitress serve me who looked extremely young to be serving alcohol, who also got my order wrong. And when I got my steak cooked, I asked for medium well which came out pretty rare. It really put me off my food as my steak was re heated and cooked slightly more; which changed the flavouring of it. Not what I expect for a £30 worth of steak. Will not be coming here for food again.

You sent an menu with the booking confirmation but when arrived different and so minimal with 3 salads on starters and only other choice sharing platter, burger was over cooked and very dry , Lobster thermidore had butter only on ?? Not happy at all

After spending approximately 2/3 months in lock down my I decided to treat my wife .
On arrival the staff were enthusiastic but that’s the highlight!
After being sat near a dirty window in the corner we were then waited on after what seemed an age..
very dissatisfied with the size of the steak for £30 ? To be honest I have had better service and food at a beefeater .
Sorry not very good .

I feel slightly guilty about leaving a bad review as I have eaten here quite a few times and it’s usually good. However, post-Covid the menu has been slimmed down and the choices are limited and not interesting. Also, the quality was very average. I had the £40 lobster thermadore and it was flavourless, with a very weak butter. Also, if you are having Lobster and chips then they should be crispy, not underdone.

Step it up please.

The menu given when booking was no where near the same as the menu on arrival. I understand that the menu had been reduced due to COVID-19 but this should have been said at the time of the booking. The sweet options were “ice cream, sorbet or Eton mess”, I could have had those at home. Overall unfortunately, we were very disappointed. It felt like a very expensive meal for no atmosphere, no real food choices and an extremely over priced and blandly cooked lobster. We have been to the Hengist before and unfortunately with each visit we have been less and less inclined to go back. This will have been our last visit. Very sad as on our first visit we were super impressed. The services was amazing and the food was too but sadly this seems to have gone downhill.

Staff were super friendly and attentive, Olivia and Daria were very chatty with us and this was lovely. The food was superb, only 1 vegetarian option so was sceptical but was delicious! Would recommend to all friends and family

Nice venue, good and attentive service. A good varied menu. Would have preferred a more comprehensive wine list choice other than French. I don't think I would like to visit with large parties in attendance, but that could be said of most venues.

A memorable birthday evening at The Hengist. The scallops, the venison, and the line caught sea bass were delicious and the ambience was perfect for a Monday evening celebration. The service was excellent and welcoming, also we definitely recommend the crumble and the creme brulee for the perfect finish. All in all, a most enjoyable experience.

We had booked to see the musician, was taken upstairs we thought we would hear him over the speakers , but this was not the case so they moved us downstairs! Thank you. We were served warm prosecco , we didn’t complain and then the wrong red wine they did offer to change it but it tasted ok so we kept it. The food was ok not exceptional my husband had a plum crumble for dessert , it was more like plum soup and he bit Into a whole star anise which was not pleasant. The musician was brilliant and the place had a lovely atmosphere with pleasant staff but they were very young and not very attentive, especially as they add a 10% service charge to the bill.

When booked I was not informed it was “steak night” when investigating before the fish was our option as this was my wife’s birthday and she loves fish. When I asked at the restaurant about other menus all he said is “it’s steak night” with no other options we both had the rump steak my wife couldn’t even cut her steak and I struggled we told the waiter and changed my wife’s knife still no joy so she left 70 percent not wanting to ruin the evening and make a scene we paid and left I am extremely disappointed with this I booked this to celebrate my wife’s birthday and failed because of your restaurant

Had Sunday lunch with our family. The food was very good in the main and overall value was very good based upon the two or three set course menu. Main courses were excellent. Several of the starters were very nice although the Brixham potted crab starter was a little disappointing. as the flavour of the crab was lost in making it into more of a mousse consistency. The drinks order at the outset was slow and a little confused. Some of the deserts were good but the chocolate ice cream was not that great.
So overall. some things were done really well whilst some things leave some room to further improve.

The first time we had dined at The Hengist. It was a Tuesday evening so only a few tables were booked.
Service from the two staff was first class. The food was delicious. We would certainly return again. It is not often that we dine locally so it was a pleasant surprise to find somewhere different to go. All in all a great success!

The food was lovely and fresh, presented well and came out on a nice tea stand. But the service really let down the whole experience. The waitress barely said a word other than asking if we wanted pink or white prosecco (which was lovely and the raspberry in the glass was a nice touch). The other waitress who bought out our food told us what was there but sounded like she didn't want to be there herself! I don't think I saw any waiting staff smile and it was only upon leaving that the poor lady behind the bar tried to smile but she just looked to be in pain! Coffee was lovely (Even if it did cost extra) but we then had to bring the lady on the front desk our money for the coffee + tip as no one came to check on us the whole duration we were there. On the whole, food was amazing but I wouldn't pay the full price if it wasn't on a groupon due to the service lacking so much.

We had the Monday steak offer. Noticeably there was no weight specified against the filet or ribeye steak. The size was quite miserly, which was a pity because I was cooked to my liking. I would rather go to a restaurant which is open about the size of steak I can expect. Could not recommend.

As it was Vakentines night, and we were receiving a special menu, we were both very much looking forward to it. The food, as always, was extremely enjoyable. Only slight disappointment was that as it was a"romantic" night", being seated next to a couple with a toddler didn't give it that "romantic" feel. The price was extremely expensive too. I had paid a £50 deposit, and the bill was £187. Actually not sure if the £50 deposit came off the bill, I am guessing it did. Having said this, we had a lovely evening, and will be going back, as we always enjoy it here.

We went for Afternoon tea, we were served the champagne and sandwiches and cakes quite quickly but we were then left without plates, I had to attract someone’s attention and ask for plates, the scones were very dry, the sandwiches were nice and the selection of small cakes nice but we felt forgotten about, we were asked once if everything was ok after being there 20 minutes but we had to attract someone’s attention to get our pot of tea (a small pot) and then attract their attention again after an hour to get a second pot. So quite a mediocre experience and I have been to far better places for Afternoon Tea. The place itself is nice and in a lovely village, they just need to up their game with the service

Honestly the food we received was absolutely vile at the hengist on Thursday. There was little to no vegetarian options, in terms of mains I had ONE option. In this day and age you would think it would be a little more inclusive. The amount we paid for what we received was below par completely, my duck was so tough I left it entirely and not one staff member came to check on how our food was. My sister in law ordered medium steak, she received medium rare to rare. Our drinks were wrong multiple times and honestly it was just a joke. Not happy at all, we had many complaints and nothing was done to rectify the situation.

I have been dining at the Hengist for many years now, I have not ever been disappointed with the quality of the food, nor the waitress service. It is good value for money and I look forward to going back again soon.
