Lovely meal, food was delicious, service was perfect. Would recommend.
The waiters were all very young and quite unorganised.was waited on by a number of waitresses, which would of been nicer to be served by just one waitress.food was OK,but not outstanding. Over all,I wouldn't rush back to the hengist.
Excellent food, well thought out, presented and delicious.
Table service was appalling given our afternoon tea which was lovely we were never asked if we were ok we had to ask for more tea, service was not at all acceptable fir the price we paid as well then put a service charge on which I paid but definitely spoilt what should of been a special day with a friend :(
The food is better than the service - and deserves a better surrounding than an ex-pub dressed up as an 80's wine bar. We received no welcome on arrival, no check backs during the meal, the dessert was served cold (sticky toffee pudding and custard), no offer of additional drinks during our meal despite taking 2.5 hours from start to finish. Music varied from Classic Rock to Radio 1 and would have been better not at all. Final bill included an item which we had ordered at the start (but our waiter had been unable to tell was unavailable, the barman told us eventually) - so it had 3 starters on it for a table for two...
Left feeling disappointed and not a little ripped off. Could have eaten in any one of many local Indian or Chinese restaurants for a fraction of the £115 paid here and received warm food, with speedy and friendly service.
Great food, great staff. Downside is that tables are too close to each other so you know everything about the diners next to you and vice versa.
A friendly, helpful staff team.
The food was the usual good tasting quality, but portions are on the small side for the price.
Ambience - a cozy, subtly lit venue which is suitable for meals with family & friends.
Fabulous garden area, great food, beautifully presented, nice staff. We will be back
Another great steak night
We had tables in the upstairs "conservatory" great space and they were happy to turn down the heating.
Starter and desert were the real standouts with great flavours and different options, along with the veggie Sunday roast (even if the menu was a bit pumpkin heavy on the veggie).
Beef roast was beautifully pink and a good range of veg it just wasn't outstanding.
Service was friendly and really helpful, and you didn't feel you were being rushed to get through the sitting, a bit of a wait to get the bill at the end, but they were low on staff and it didn't impact on the experience at all.
Would definitely go again and would be keen to see their "regular" menu
We was given a table beside the bar which not what we was expecting. There was a group of people in the bar that were loud and very drunk. We requested a different table and was offered a table for an hour and half. Both my wife and I felt we were not valued customers and can only describe the experience as shoddy. We declined the table and left. Fortunately we was able to get a table back at our hotel and the evening wasn’t completely ruined.
Love The Hengist! We’ve never had a bad experience here, the food is always amazing and last night was no exception. The waiting staff are experienced and extremely professional. I can’t fault it on any level, if you get the chance to dine here do, you won’t regret it
Lovely food and fantastic service.
Will be back soon.
Possible the worst roast dinner I have ever had, meat was undercook, veg and potatoes over cooked, seemed as if the the dinner was just nuked in a microwave.
My starter of lobster ravioli was not even cooked and had to be sent back.
the children's starter and main come at the same time?!
The wine list was poor.
From a former Michelin star restaurant it was appalling and the services is better in McDonalds.
Steak is amazing! Beautifully cooked with a choice of dressing - loved the Red Wine Jus!
Lovely restaurant food and service needs to be improved
I was a bit disappointed. I haven't been to The Hengist for years and it used to be one of my favourites for a special night out. It's ok now but I wouldn't rush to go there again and wouldn't recommend it. The food was ok (average) but the service wasn't great. We weren't offered a drink whilst looking at the menu and actually had to call somebody over to order them. It was odd as a waiter dumped a bowl of nuts on our table as we sat down but we had nothing to drink with them. If you are worried about Covid, probably not the place to go. The tables are close together and none of the staff were wearing masks. It didn't bother me but I think it shows respect to clientele for waiters to wear them.
Lovely cosy Sunday evening spent with good friends and enjoying dinner
We’re always well received and food/ambiance value for money. Customer service good and staff friendly and attentive. Parking at the back of the restaurant and pleasant walk through to the reception area. Would certainly recommend the Hengist and you wouldn’t be disappointed.
The food was good but find that the extra charge for gravy and tap water is outrageous.
Staff were ok but nobody stood out. Hubby had almost finished his dinner before salt was delivered to the table. There was no urgency about anything.
Tiny portion of sharing bread was dry and possibly a bit stale.
My main course was almost cold, which was a real shame because it was otherwise well cooked and very tasty.
Cheese board was tasty, but again, portion was a bit on the small side.
Not unhappy overall but I'd hoped to be delighted and I wasn't!
Food is always amazing, with great service. My only criticism is that the toilets could be cleaner.
Service was great and food Delicious, will return soon
Whilst we waited quite a while between courses it was well worth the wait, the food was exceptional! We couldn’t find fault with anything and the staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly. The atmosphere in the restaurant was really lovely. It’s the first time we’ve eaten there but will definitely be going back.
Scallops under cooked, monkfish over cooked, slow poor service, extreamly over priced, waited over an hour for main course definitely would not recommend!!!
Came to the Hengist a couple of years ago and the food was outstanding, however, attended last night (30th October 2021) and the outcome was not quite the same. On arrival our party of four was taken upstairs and sat at tables which looked like the sort you take camping. The area was quite cramped and uncomfortable.
Ordered some drinks to start and eventually received them, however one drink was served in a dirty glass and a glass of white wine was served luke warm.
We ordered starters which were tasty but the soup ordered was barely warm.
Mains were ordered with more drinks, which three of us received drinks but one party member waited nearly half an hour and asked three times.
Once we all had our mains and drinks we noticed what seemed to be an ongoing problem with the food is that all the mains were once again luke warm.
Ordered dessert, with this hoping to be the saving grace, but, as nice as it was the desserts seemed to be bought in and not made on site, with a venue with up market prices you would expect more.
All in all, I think the Hengist has potential but it has a lot of work to do, and the toilets definitely need addressing as they are disgusting and the type of thing you would expect in a back ally boozer!
Paying nearly £350 for the meal, we would expect better. Needless to say, we won't be back.
Cannot fault the food and drink. Long term favourite venue and never disappoints.
Loved it here. The food was amazing! We will be visiting again.
Great service and staff were lovely
Great food staff very good only thing was not informed that they had run out of part of our starter before we ordered so arrived with that missing we had to ask were it was to be told they had run out of that part but was offered a replacement. Think we should of been told about this when we ordered. But still was great all round thanks
Service was very good and friendly food was delicious
Food was amazing. It did get busier towards the end of our meal which did spoil the overall ambience but the food made up for it.
First drink of coke was spilt all over me by the waitress who wasn’t very apologetic. We asked to move to a different table as first table was on a slope. Upstairs dinning doesn’t look no where near as nice as the downstairs set up which is a shame.
Gutted it cost me the cost of a new shirt but on the plus side the food was nice.
Loved the restaurant food was lovely and hot
But had trio of lamb and thought the position size very small ,nicely cooked
My husband had same and both the same small potion
Not sure if would recommend because if this
The food was delicious - nothing was left on any of our plates!
I have been wanting to eat here for many years. As much as I loved the restaurant, the waiting staff were amazing andy starter of scallops were to die for when I had my main of a lamb roast my heart sank. The roast potatoes were reheated and had that cold reheated potato taste.
I would eat here again but will never try on a Sunday. Very disappointed.
This visit was our 3rd visit to the restaurant and on this occasion the roast beef Sunday roast was disappointing. I wonder if you have a new chef ?
The food temperature itself wasn’t very hot and the Yorkshire puddings didn’t taste or look nice .
The lemon desert was nice and nicely presented too.
There is a lovely atmosphere at The Hengist. Table service was good and the food was excellent however, the portion sizes were so small for the main meal that we had to order an additional side of fries! I understand fine dining is different in this way but feel this would put me off returning as it is an expensive evening. This is my only gripe as what we had was really delicious - just a shame there was so little of it.
I went with my husband and 5 year old for an early dinner on my husbands birthday. It was our first visit. The food was really lovely. The scallop starter was absolutely delicious, my husbands filet steak was perfect and my risotto was good. The only disappointing part was that I felt so rushed. My daughter had dough balls to start, she did take a while to eat them because they were piping hot so needed to cool down. The waiting staff were hovering around waiting for her to finish and cleared our plates while she was still eating, which I don’t like. The second she put the last mouthful in, our mains were down, her starter plate was replaced with her main whilst she was still chewing. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed meal, with at least 10 minutes between courses. My risotto wasn’t particularly hot, so I think it had probably been waiting a while to be served. I understand that timing can be difficult, but with prices such as there’s, I would expect slightly better. At the time of booking you are told the table is yrs for 2 hours, which is fine and we were finished 3 courses within an hour and a half, so there was no need to be so rushed. Overall we had a lovely evening and I would definitely go back, I would just ask them to slow down a bit and give us a small break between courses.
Good was pretty good, apart from some oversized nibbles at the beginning. Service was fine but the real disappointment was the upstairs layout and decor. Downstairs is lovely, but upstairs feels like it’s been done to maximise profits over customer enjoyment
