I visited the restaurant on Saturday 19th October with my girlfriend and we sat downstairs, the atmosphere was very nice, the starter I had was the Mackerel which was ok. The main course was Rump of Lamb, this had a hard crust to it which was exstreemly salty, I drunk nearly a whole jug of water with it and it made the whole meal feel ruined.
I didn't finish the meal, I spoke to the waitress and told her the reason why and she went away to speak to someone, when she came back she apologised and offered me a free drink or dessert, but didn't explain why the Lamb was so salty.
It was a shames it was a special occasion and it was let down by the meal, I have visited the restaurant many times and this was the first time I have had to complain about the food.
It would have been helpful if your waiter had known that "cod bon bons" were in fact glorified fish cakes. If you must invent names for dishes at least explain what they are. Having said that they were very tasty & for a lunch the portions were just right. Thank you.
Also - not the restaurant's fault but parking was quite a walk away when it rains.
Went for Sunday roast - Lovely atmosphere, staff friendly and the food was amazing.
Excellent roast dinner.
Service was ok. Nice atmosphere. Not badly priced. A lovely place to go on a special occasion
Superb meal, great service. Very pleasant location and the set lunch menu is terrific value for money.
Chateaubriand menu: stunning food and excellent, friendly service. It was our second visit to Hengist; it has been a worthy dining experience on both occasions.
Tiny nitpicking. The service was good the waitress didn’t know what beers were available or j20 / equivalents and had to go off to ask.
Food was absolutely delicious and good sized portions.
Lovely food. Surprisingly filling considering it's A La Carte. Waitress (Lucy I think) was spot on. Really liked it out meal.
Brilliant food, just cant fault it. It was our first time going to the restaurant and I must say best value for money and fantastic food. Well done to everyone!! Massive thank you to the chefs!!
Went for a meal last night with my boyfriend and unfortunately after the starters I received some bad news so had to cancel the mains and go home.
The waitress was absolutely lovely and understanding so she got us the bill.
I was so grateful that they didn’t charge us for our main courses although I’m sure they properly were cooked and ready to be severed.
I work in hospitality myself and I thought that was very kind of them to do.
Thank you again, we will be back and I will have the duck dish.
Thank you again
Haven’t been to the Hengist for over 15 years so thought we’d give it a try. Unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend it. Nothing terrible but lots of “less than” points. Our food was fine but not great, served lukewarm not warm or hot. I wasn’t offered a choice of gins or tonics and the tonic was already poured into the gin when served. My wife’s Bloody Mary wasn’t stirred. Puddings were very average. Two main courses, two puddings, two aperitifs, a large glass of wine and a bottle of water came to almost £100 (and we absolutely didn’t have the most expensive menu options). Some of the waiting staff were far more friendly than others. And finally - on almost every table around us, the other diners were using mobile phones throughout their whole meal, some of them almost non-stop, and many of them were not on silent. Not the Hengist’s fault per se but a clear mobile policy would help the ambience. Overall we enjoyed each other’s company so our evening wasn’t spoilt but we won’t be rushing back I’m afraid.
Went on a Thursday this week made a change from the Monday steak night menu but again everything was perfect for my wife and I cannot fault anything already looking forward to our next visit thank you.
Such a shame because this could be a great overall experience. Initially incorrect starters brought to the table and then one correct starter and the other wrong. We then waited 10 mins for the other starter. Main course was good but waited 10 mins for mustard!!
Overall let down by poor service.
We have been here many times before and food and service have been excellent. This visit was disappointing as we waited 30 minutes for afternoon tea which was not freshly made and of no comparison to previously enjoyed food here. Not sure we'll rush back!
Good food, very good service and a relaxed atmosphere
We couldn't fault the Hengist at all. The staff were lovely and didn't rush us. It was a lovely relaxing experience to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Food was superb.
Fab service and food everytime!
Generally a good experience. We had to ask for drinks after siting down for 10 mins and were not offered a wine menu, with the main menu, which was a bit strange...again had to ask. Wine I picked was not available after being shown a different bottle, they hoped I would accept. Food was good and service from then on faultless.
Amazing food. We have eaten here several times and the consistency and standards are excellent. The Chateaubriand is absolutely the best I have ever had, and my husband just loves the cheese sauce with everything! I would highly recommend.
Excellent food, as always. My gluten intolerance is very well catered for and the waiting staff most accommodating. Slightly disappointed at the unavailability of coffee due to the machine having broken down but these things happen!
Extensive gin menu for our aperitif and the Sunday lunch menu features traditional roasts plus a fish and veggie alternative.
Lovely place.x.friendly nice gardens out the back
The close location of the cocktail bar to our table really distracted from the enjoyment of the food. although the food was reasonably priced for its quality the overall experiance was not worth it.
Loved this place for our first anniversary, will definitely be going back soon,
A very enjoyable evening so much better than the normal public house meal evening
Really lovely evening and welcoming staff, really couldn't fault the food or wine. Only slight wrinkle was that the liquor coffees took an age to arrive - at least 20 minutes probably a fair bit longer despite asking - eventually we had to leave before they arrived at the table. Staff were fine about it and gave a refund for the coffees. I think there may have been a problem with the coffee machine and if they had told us it would have been easier. Staff were great about it when we explained we had to go and we had a couple of complimentary coffees on the way out so not a problem. Would definitely go back and recommend to friends.
We turned up at 8:15 on Friday as part of our wedding anniversary celebrations. We could hear music when we were 50 yards away from the restaurant. On arrival we were escorted upstairs and shown our table. There was ,I assume ,a wedding reception being held on the ground floor. On sitting down it quickly became obvious that a normal conversation could not be held due to the volume of the music plus the vibrations were coming through the floor and seats. I asked a clearly embarrassed waitress if the music would be carrying on all night . She apologised and admitted that it would.
Both my wife and I felt that we would not be able to relax and enjoy the meal in these circumstances so reluctantly stood up and left.
Whilst accepting that in the current climate businesses have to diversify to make money it would have only been polite to warn us of the possible noise. The table had been booked for over a week and we were asked to confirm our attendance earlier on in the day. There was plenty of opportunity to warn us.
After many previous visits I fear this may be our last.
Shame a wedding was downstairs and vibrating the floor near the end of the meal
Yet another great meal at my favourite local restaurant. The menu options were nice and varied and the cauliflower soup was incredible. The restaurant never fails to disappoint!
I have been going to the Hengist for many years now & must that the quality of the food is not as good as it used to be. We were seated upstairs which was fine but I do prefer the ambiance of the restaurant downstairs.
Arrived just before seven, ordered drinks and meal service was very good but the speed everything came out the kitchen seemed like the chef wanted an early night. We had three courses in under an hour as one course was cleared another arrived no time to digest anything
Excellent Meal with good service, Slightly slow in delivering the drinks when reordered and initially no water was offered, but this did not impact on a lovely evening. Highly recommended.
Great setting and ambience. Friendly and efficient service and the food was fantastic.
Excellent menu choice, am definitely coming back.
The Hengist offers exquisite food in a fabulous setting, with great service. If you are looking for an upmarket, elegant restaurant but without being stuffy and overpriced, this is the place 😃
Lovely setting for a romantic meal. The oysters would have been well worth the ££ however they had a lot of broken shell bits which spoilt the experience :( The steak was beautifully cooked and you couldn’t fault the presentation.
Tipping could be clearer as they apply a discretionary service charge which is just added on in any event (there were 2 of us dining at 3pm on a weekday).
Steak special was great value, well cooked and lovely cut of fillet served with nice bottle of Shiraz.
Starters of crab and scallops were OK but felt could have been better, no bread or olives offered or mention of sharing starters as listed on website.
For the 2nd Monday running we enjoyed the stake night and the rest of the meal from the menu.
If anything we enjoyed this evening more than last week.
Service was brilliant, food is good although personally I’d prefer a better selection of vegetables with a roast dinner (ie some broccoli or cabbage instead of sugar snaps) but all was cooked well... roast potatoes were outstanding.
A better selection of vegetarian foods would be great too, as one of our guests were vegetarian and you’d ran out of what she could have.
I will definitely return though and recommend to others.
Great cocktails and the meat was cooked to perfection. Blue fillet was blue, which is getting harder to find these days. Need to return to sample more of the menu.
We were a party of 7.Not one of us was fully satisfied with our meal.it was very expensive meals having to add cost of sides. So disappointed with my meal and when I said at end that I missed not having crackling with my belly of pork it was a case of ,We forget to put it on would you like it now.Chips were not cooked if you can even call them chips.£28 service charge made the whole experience very expensive
This was our second visit to the Hengist. First time with my parents but this time just me and my daughter. It was lovely as expected. Food was delicious, cocktails tasted great. We were on occasion left a long just a bit too long - as the mains were cleared away the waitress asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu which we did but then we waited and waited and eventually re-asked for it. It wasn't that we were in a rush and actually like to be left alone but having been asked if we wanted to see the menu and then it not to appear for at least 20 mins it was a little frustrating.
On arrival we had ordered pre-dinner drinks at our table and could see them poured and waiting on the bar but a large group had arrived and the barman had seemingly disappeared and so one of the other staff was manning the bar....they must have sat on the bar for about 10 mins and we were just about to grab the attention of the waitress when she realised what had happened and dashed off to get them. It wasn't a major problem - just a bit of constructive feedback. It was clearly busy but I did feel as if we were forgotten about a little bit in the rush of others arriving/being seated/served.
Food was fabulous though. We really enjoyed our evening.
