   Food was nice and staff polite. Service was a bit slow, particularly with drinks. Wasn’t expecting the magician, although he was good and a lovely chap, not everyone wants to be interactive when they go out for dinner.

   Been here a few times, but this was best so far. Service was good. Young staff are pleasant and eager to please, if a bit forgetful! Food was tasty, hot and well presented, although they were a bit mean with meat portion and roast potatoes! There was a good ambience as it was father's day and 80's music made a nice change, prompting a few nostalgic conversations!

   We booked outside for 8 people. Lovely garden area. Service was great, all got our food together. Very friendly and helpful staff. We will definitely be returning.

   Had a lovely relaxing Afternoon Tea here and wasn't disappointed. The Hengist is a modern but lovely old building and the staff were very attentive. The food was good - I particularly liked the quiche that came with the sandwiches. The cakes were delicious too. I have one criticism, the scones were overcooked and therefore hard, however the waitress replaced them for us. I would definitely go back there.

   We were seated upstairs and unfortunately had to move as they had a private party downstairs and the music was extremely loud. The pork dish lacked flavour and no coconut or ginger as described and was very bland. The potato on the lamb dish lacked moisture and again very bland. I have definitely had better meals at the Hengist in the past.

   3 of us lunched Mother in laws 95th Personable staff Good food Would recommend, but suggest you check your bill carefully- overcharged us £5 and 10% service auto added, credit card machine will prompt you to add tip although service charge on bill.

    Due to some mistakes , we waited about an hour for our mains and it took us 2 hours and half to say the least to finish a simple night out dinner. Food and ambience were nice but when having been waited so long, our cheerful mood had gone entirely as a result. Nevertheless, in the end, they discounted our bill as a good gesture.

    I have visited Hengist many times and always had a very enjoyable experience but Sunday was a big disappointment. The only thing that was served promptly was the water. We had to ask to order the drinks and prompt the water for them. The main course took ages. When we ordered desert we were told that everything was available, after fifteen minutes we asked where our deserts were. The waiter went to the kitchen when he came back he said that there was no Lemon Meringue Pie. One member of our party refused to order anything else another one changed her order. We then waited another twenty minutes for our deserts. Normally our visit takes about two hours, Sunday took three hours because of the waiting time. Come on Hengist what happened.

    It was a relief when the extremely loud music playing on our arrival was turned down, making the atmosphere more relaxed and welcoming for one of our rare family get-togethers. Service and food good.

    We have been to the Hengist a few times and we are never disappointed. Our most recent visit was last night; the service was outstanding from the moment we stepped in the door, through to our departure. Cocktails were absolutely 10/10 and the food was fresh and cooked to perfection.

    Overall good, slow with drinks and confusion over table! Everybody polite and courteous! Good good. Table situated near entrance and large group with babies meant noise levels were high.

    Service a little slow, however the team was very young and I got the impression that they were learning. We all have to start somewhere!! All staff very pleasant and courteous. Food nice a little on the expensive side but ok for the occasion visit.

    Have eaten at the Hengist a lot , was disappointed with my meal this time My wife had seafood Linguine, which was dripping with oil way too much she struggled. I had the duck breast , which was not pink and too chewy, was not good at all really. Hope they was just having an off night because if that’s the standard they are setting I would struggle to go back they can do much better on that meal with the prices charged I would not recommend to friends at the moment . Service was ok .

    The service was not up to standard and my husband and friend ordered the burger and it was dry and not really very good at all. Overall disappointing as on previous visits we've been very pleased.

    I have left it for a few days keeping an open mind for reflection of where we are today generally. Finally I have made my mind up to say the dining experience was really poor, we initially were seated on a dirty used table so we moved ourselves and then told by our young waitress that they had no triple cooked chips? Surely they make them in the morning to carry out the 3 cook for dinner service maybe out of the frozen ones. I chose a totally different menu as I wanted a steak with chips not fries so I chose the plaice and that was a mistake, it certainly was not a fresh plaice more like a Dab which I have eaten many times in my childhood as it was a cheap alternative to plaice. It was bland and smothered in a thick cream sauce. A poor experience especially as our last one was brilliant but that was September 2021.

    Food was lovely Just a miner issue Was told the prawns were peeled in the linguine when they weren’t and had to ask for a finger dip. Also wasn’t told there was no chunky chips with steak only skinny fries Just lack of communication from the waitress, but over all the food was nice

    We changed our booking to inside as the weather wasn’t as sunny as forecast. It was busy inside but with a lovely atmosphere. We had a baby with us in a pram (as did another table) which made us feel relaxed that it was an ok thing to do! The food was amazing & the service was friendly & attentive. It was so nice not to feel rushed & enjoy a delicious grown up lunch. This is the best service we have experienced at the Hengist in a long time. The food has always been top quality but the service in the past has been disappointing. This time it was exceptional. Thank you so much we will definitely be back - maybe next time in the evening for cocktails too!

    Quiet on Bank Holiday Monday, not much ambiance, but enjoyed the food and the service from the young man and young lady was excellent. To the older gentleman who took our order, do you need to wear an overcoat for your role? Wasn’t at all cold but you were acting as if the heating had broken! Very odd! Have visited many times previously over the years

    First time at Hengist, always thought it could be good. Friendly, enthusiastic greeting, but told we would be the first upstairs, which got me thinking we are excess booking. The upstairs was tastefully decorated, but our table felt isolated, and lacked atmosphere, almost like being stuck in the back room with the staff! The waiters were extremely polite and enthusiastic but seemed to lack knowledge of what they were serving, and I’ve never been offered to have my starter and main course served at the same time before! The menu is perfect, and not overwhelming, the wine also has a choice for all. The food when it arrived was well cooked and brilliantly presented, and didn’t disappoint, it was the saving grace, as was the who I presume was the owner who showed great knowledge and passion about the wine list and sherries. Will definitely visit again, but will insist on being seated down stairs in the proper restaurant.

    We enjoyed a nice evening. After having to arrange for a better table than originally had been planned for us and then waiting ages for the food. In the end all was good. Service for what is a popular and high-class restaurant was borderline poor. Such a shame because it should have been so much better, and no apologies were made for the delay. We did consider asking for the service charge to be removed from the final bill but in the end, I decided against this.

    We ate here 4 years ago and it was fantastic: great food, knowledgeable staff.. wauw… but now : nothing like it was. Obviously different chef, new staff and possibly new management. Terrible.

    The afternoon tea in general was lovely, however the scones were disappointing, they were extremely flat and a little burnt. the remainder of the food was lovely and was plentiful. Service was ok but not great, we had to ask a few times for more tea and it felt like we were an inconvenience for asking. I would recommend the tea but would expect the scones to be nicer.

    I was looking forward to eating here after hearing good things, unfortunately our experience was far from good, our food over several courses were missing items that were listed on the menu and food was cold when it arrived only to be taken away and microwaved, the waiter however was very friendly. Don’t think we will be returning anytime soon

    Staff were very friendly. Unfortunately spilt a drink on my girlfriend but these things happen and we was giving the cocktails for free. My seafood tagliatelle was so nice but my girlfriends chicken parmigiana was raw and chewy other tables complained about it aswell. Really nice place maybe just caught on a bad night for chicken

    The food was mostly delicious, apart from the sticky toffee pudding which tasted cheap and burnt. The Appletini had been spilled over the sides when it was brought to our table, the waitress even knocked it as she was taking it off the tray and said ‘oops’ and then ran away. I expect a beer to have spillage over the side, but not a £9.50 cocktail! The service was laggy and slow, we had to keep asking for menus and to order food and drink which made us feel like we were pestering. The waitress even told us at one point ‘I’m sorry, I’ve lost track, have I given you dessert menus?’. I’d almost expect it at a generic chain restaurant, but at somewhere that charges extortionate prices, it’s really not the service you expect to receive. Also, £10 for a drink and they’re serving water in IKEA glasses… don’t mean to sound snobbish, but… really? Luckily we had a voucher so weren’t paying for the menu, but it was to celebrate our anniversary which was put in our reservation and not even a ‘happy anniversary’, just a ‘wow, 10 years?’ Cheers 👍🏻 On 3 separate occasions waitresses and the owner asked us about the voucher and as we were SO close to the people next to us, it made us feel very self conscious and cheap. The whole thing felt very budget but charging stupid prices for it. Better off staying in Maidstone town and going to a chain. Safe to say we will not be going back 👍🏻
