The Honest Lawyer moved our booking at very short notice so we could celebrate a birthday before the lockdown. We had a fabulous evening, excellent food and the service was perfect.
Very nice food and friendly service. Great name and interesting venue next to the river
Good Service, shame about Covid otherwise I would go again.
The food we had was excellently prepared and served. It is not a cheap experience dining at the Honest Lawyer but the quality and quantity could not be faulted.
Great menu and the food was of a high standard - we will be booking in again!
Excellent place for a meal, food was lovely and certainly recommend the pork cheek starter but everything was good.
Great service excellent food nice quite place clean. Very pleasant staff
A rainy night in Cockermouth but this place was the most amazing escape.
Beautiful food, clearly made with care and served with a smile. The vegetarian options especially were inventive and delicious and the staff couldn't have been more attentive to our every need.
Couldn't recommend The Honest Lawyer more highly!!
Good service, lovely food and nice location
Cracking restaurant, cosy, friendly, with lovely food and great service. We will be back
Me and my husband had a delicious meal here I had the fillet steak and it was perfectly cooked and my husband had the lamb and said it was the best he had ever tasted it was cooked pink and super tender.
Easy to book online.
Good social distancing in place
Food very good, tasty, well cooked and quick to table.
Slightly overpriced specials but overall very nice. Lovely evening.
It was a disappointing evening. If you are going to dine at honest lawyer, do not agree to being seated near the exit because staff will forget you're there. Because it was so cold near the exit, we did eventually get to sit elsewhere, staff found us a table near the toilet. Our drinks and starter came promptly after ordering but the mains took more than an hour - steak was dry and cold although the fries were hot. This wasn't worth waiting more than an hour for. My honest review.
Beautiful food, thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. Great wine selection and all perfectly Covid safe. Would definitely recommend.
Lovely staff, quiet ambience, tadty food, a great place to eat!
Relaxed, welcoming and seemed covid safe. Parking nearby not free but at least it was cheap in evening. Website needs updating re opening hours.
If you look at the website it gives the impression of good local fayre. The menu is confused - a mix of Indian, Italian and something else. I thought I’d play it safe and go for the Indian veg thali as the owner and chef are Indian. Really poor food not worth £18
Very disappointing as I wanted to support local restaurants. The Indian Dhal was like clay and the naan bread like something out of Sainsbury. Not impressed
I was dining alone and certainly felt the level of attention I received was less than some of the tables with more people. I was offered no bread while all tables around me received this.
Food was fair but not exceptional and I felt overpriced for what it was.
Overall a bit disappointed vs the reviews on here.
Had the sirloin steak although cooked as requested the meat was very dry.
The food was excellent, we tried the fish cakes and goats cheese for starters and the hake and spiced lamb for mains. Everything was so tasty and tasted so fresh, would definitely recommend and I am sure we will be back.
It maybe would have been nice to have some music on in the background of the restaurant, but I understand the licensing for this is very expensive.
Overall we had a lovely meal!
Special Lamb dish ok but overpriced - potatoes missing - chef denied it was missing - poor attitude TBH.
Staff generally helpful - needed the cheese board to fill up.
Unlikely to return
Lovely staff, checked your temp before entering. All very clean and safe. Good food and quick service
A lovely meal in a fantastic location. Really friendly staff and topped with a quality meal. All safety and high levels of hygiene were adhered to. We felt very safe.
I think this menu was made especially for the eat out scheme because there was so way ever anyone would pay £18 for our dry tasteless Luke warm dreadful main course. Starter was nice but I read a bad review about what we ordered for main and wish I’d heeded the warning. The service was unfortunately terrible too. After we were shown in we were ignored for ages and had to ask eventually for a menu and to place our drinks order. When I asked for red wine the waiter wrote it down and didn’t ask any further questions, so I prompted asking what kinds of wine they offered by the glass. He replied saying no it’s just how it comes. When I turned over the menu later I saw a list of 7 different types of wine you could choose from. Pretty terrible meal and not value for money Even with the money off. I do not recommend unfortunately. Will not be going back which is a shame as we live locally and really wanted to have a good experience there.
Great location! Fantastic manager (Matthew?). And really quaint outside area to wait, have drinks or even eat, with the sound of the babbling stream.
Our orders were forgotten for 35 minutes. When we asked about them we were told twice that they had never been put into the till, and that we had to reorder and wait until other tables who had come in in the interim had been served. After reordering, the order was magically found but we were told it hadn’t been put into the kitchen because the girl thought we didn’t want the food yet (why would I order food if I didn’t want it!?), with both female servers passive aggressively telling us that it was our fault that they hadn’t passed our order from the till to the kitchen.
Even once our food finally arrived, the starter was ice cold and sent back- this was graciously removed from our bill. The dessert, the “warm brownie with chocolate ice cream”, arrived with vanilla ice cream instead of chocolate- not a huge deal, but why weren’t we told? We asked for spoons as the only silverware we had were our dirty forks we had used for the fish main course, which.... never arrived. Meanwhile, said vanilla ice cream I didn’t even want melted into a pool, and we had to ask two other staff members before finally getting our spoons, and finding out why the chocolate ice cream never arrived.
Unfortunate, as we really wanted to like the place... but we will definitely not be back, and couldn’t in good faith recommend it to anyone else either.
The portions are small! We had the beef which was lovely just not enough food and certainly not enough beef ! There isn’t an option order any sides either !!
We had a really tasty supper at the Honest Laywer. A fully booked night but the waiting team and kitchen were on top form. The best restaurant in Cockermouth and everything from the rump steaks to the vegan sticky toffee pudding was spot on.
We had a delicious meal and the service was very good. I particularly enjoyed the pigeon breast starter and the hake main course. My family both had fish and chips and said it was very good.
Very judgy people. no drinks. I think the staff were rude. People sitting way to close.
Tables far too close together to enable social distancing
My wife had the Hake with caviar sauce which she said was absolutely delicious. I had the non veg Thali which was tasty but not warm enough. The rice was cold half way through the meal and I should have sent it back. I did complain to one of dthe staff clearing the table nad when I paid the bill, perhaps I could have been offered a discount then. The glass of Merlot that I had was very average for the price paid. The staff were curteous but I thought the meal service was slow and I had to ask twice for the bill which seemed to take forever to arrive.
Lovely setting. Staff helpful and smiling. Food excellent.
Had a quiet table by the bar area during the Eat Out to Help Out scheme therefore value was excellent - thank you Rishi! My food was excellent but the others had the curry and were not too impressed. Tried to reflect this in my rating. The staff were attentive to the COVID restrictions but this did not affect the ambience for us. Lovely evening out.
Our family decided to visit the Honest Lawyer for lunch today and had a fantastic experience. We had our temperature taken using infrared on entry and were directed to sanitising stations before arriving at our table. The attention to detail in this regard was most welcomed and reassuring.
We ordered the rump steak, feta and date baklava and two pepperoni pizzas for the kids. The food was amazing. The steak was thick and cooked to perfection. My wife’s baklava was exceptional with every morsel finished from her plate - a rarity truth be told!
The kids pizzas were great and suitable portions.
But the chips - they are amazing..... like wedges of roast potatoes - crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. I could have eaten a pile of them on their own - seriously good.
Puddings were a must and it was nice to see local ice cream provided as an accompaniment.
I was surprised at being able to get a table. I look forward to eating here again soon.
Tables were not sanatized after people sat at them when they decided to change seats. fish pasta needed seasoning And fish was over cooked and rubbery.
