My partner and I have travelled from Liverpool for a weekend in the Lakes. We stopped here in Cockermouth on our way through having booked a table with yourselves through OpenTable. I even confirmed yesterday when contacted by OpenTable.
We arrived this evening, closed…..?
My contact details were provided, I’ve not been contacted, and there was no explanation offered.
After traipsing round Cockermouth I’ve finally found somewhere to eat, and told that you are now closed by another restaurant manager.
To not have the decency to contact a customer to say you are closed is appalling. It would take 30seconds of your time and cost literally nothing. If a customer just chose not to turn up you would be slating them.
Excellent food in a very pleasant atmosphere
Staff very helpful.
We had burgers which were really tasty but one was meant to be gluten free. Unfortunately they mixed up the top and bottom of the buns meaning neither was presented properly. Staff did apologise but no discount on bill was offered.
We were very disappointed with our visit to the Honest Lawyer. We could have complained but didn't want to spoil our evening.
It was felt the staff were very inexperienced, the food was tasteless and bland; definitely not the usual food we have eaten here before. The ambiance of the place felt different than before and we really didn't feel welcome. We were a party of 6.
4 of us had the duck and 2 the cod. The duck was very tough and not cooked quite enough, oozing with blood. The cod dish was tasteless and bland. The picture on Facebook of the duck dish was nothing like the dish we were served; we were short of vegetables. It didn't taste like duck but of blood. We would advise using a little more seasoning and ensure the food tastes good before being served. The crushed potatoes were horrible and definitely no seasoning added.
All we can say is; the issues are probably caused through badly trained staff and shortages of skilled and experienced hospitality staff probably due to Covid and Brexit. We appreciate that the hospitality industry has been badly affected but it was poor vale for money and not a good experience. Very sad to say we wont be back.
The Honest Lawyer is some where we held in high regard, and would go here to celebrate certain occasions, anniversaries, birthdays etc. Unfortunately, since our last visit a few months ago, the menu had changed and losing that french/indian cuisine it was know for.
We ordered our drinks, and the food. The wine came no problem, but 45 minutes after placing the order, we were told that the order had not gone through due to Wifi problems and they would put it through now. Another 20 mins passed, and no food arrived and we were informed that it still hadn't gone through due to the same problem, and they were working on our meal.
The meal arrive an hour and a half after our arrival. The food that was served was incredibly salty. The cheese sauce for the steak seemed to be curdled, and too much salt. Equally for the duck, the skin was fatty and wobbly, instead of being crispy and golden, and still incredibly salty.
We were compensated with a free large glass of wine, but equally this wasn't great and we left it. The wait staff both apologised for the issues. We paid £70 for a very sub-standard meal and service.
We promptly left after having our main, and sadly, we will not be returning to the restaurant.
Unluckily the table we had was near the toilets and the main walk through. There was a large blob of tomato ketchup on the table when I moved the candle which was disappointing in these Covid cleaning times. The ‘real ale’ advertised consisted of a very cold pale hoppy option which was a disappointing. The tables outside by the water in more clement weather must be very nice. We didn’t stay for dessert.
Food OK, but we were sat at a table looking at an old beer keg, stored chairs and a sweeping brush, very sad looking place with no atmosphere whatsoever.
Great food, excellent service well worth a visit and do recommend booking in advance as full even on a Monday night
From start to finish the meal was extremely poor not as described rack of lamb was 2 chops veg poor duck fatty and not sliced just two lumps on the plate
Paid the bill left would not recommend and will not be returning
small, expensive portions but nice atmosphere. would not got again
Second visit to restaurant, 1st visit food and service were excellent, so we rebooked, and took family who were visiting us. Service was not good such a shame as the food was excellent
Good food and service. Disappointed with the lack of ventilation in the restaurant considering the very high covid infection rate in Cumbria. Staff wore face masks which was pleasing to see, where other places were not.
Go somewhere else, food is poor at best. Meals were returned. Do not recommend
Very disappointed with the food served. I had the cod and asked for a salad with it rather than the veg. When it came the fish was only just warm and the salad consisted of lettuce leaves and 3 pieces of sun dried tomato! I was still charged the full price. My friend had a burger which was also only just warm and fairly tasteless. At least her chips were hot!
Birthday Meal out for a friend, fabulous food, lovely atmosphere will definitely visit again.
Excellent food and service. Excellent range of food on Bistro menu.
Unfortunately the room was cold
Food was lovely and service was really good, only problem was we had booked a table for 8pm, at 9pm we were eating our main course and were told they were shutting the kitchen so if we wanted pudding or any more drinks we had to order them now. It was a Saturday night, why take 8pm bookings if you want to shut at 9? We felt a bit under pressure to eat up and go.
We were a group of four. Food was delicious we all had something different. Desserts were 10 out of 10.
Staff were friendly and very attentive the dining rooms were lovely set in the Main Street with windows to front and side onto river. Very pretty. Cannot wait to visit again
We went for a meal as we are on our honeymoon and couldn’t have asked for a better meal, excellent staff and great prices. The portions are the right size and the quality is second to none. I would definitely come back again and again
Great food but we’re still waiting for drinks when the starter arrived. Overall a love place with great food
The restaurant seems to be struggling for staff at the moment. There is a limited menu (no a la carte). Most of the serving staff seem very inexperienced: throwing bottles into the recycling behind the bar, so every few minutes there was a loud crash of breaking glass; disappearing in groups for a smoke outside.
The food was 'OK' but not great. It was expensive for the quality - cheap pub quality at mid-price restaurant prices. The vegan burger missing the advertised hummus, burger buns dry and cheap. Chips and desserts were tasty.
Food poor. Lacking in taste and flavour and that was both a curry and Bolognese dish.
Had a very enjoyable here with my husband whilst visiting Cockermouth.
Lovely atmosphere, and very attentive staff. Food great and plenty of it!
Having seen the menu choice online we were looking forward to our visit.
After being handed the menu - we made our choices from the A La Carte to be told that wasn’t an option - only offering their Bistro menu.
Hugely disappointed as no prior notification of that.
We ordered - it was OK - but wasn’t what we wanted.
Staff lovely - brilliant COVID practises but we were disappointed 🤷🏼♀️
Slight hiccup when we arrived re the A la carte menu being removed, but soon sorted.
I'm gluten free and the menu was superb. Had an excellent garlic bread starter, followed by GF seafood pasta---amazing.
Really good friendly staff
We were informed it was only a bistro menu before we arrived which was a positive.
I had a lovely English Garden cocktail which was delicious but took quite a while for us to be asked for a drink and then our meals arrived just as after our drinks. We all opted for the lamb Kerala. The lamb was very tasty as was the pickle chutney and the naan bread. The dahl was unfortunately tasteless. Also the lamb was the most expensive thing on the street menu and we had a dish that was slightly just bigger than a ramekin dish containing the lamb, which was not enough for my husband and he didn't feel it was value for money. My husband did think the burgers looked amazing and wished he'd ordered that.
Also I asked for a glass of tap water and my sister-in- law commented that the waiter didn't then ask if anyone else would like one- a small point- but it was noted. We will perhaps return again and try something else but a disappointment with the street food as that sounded like it was their specialty.
Disappointing for me .
Very disappointing. Booked for family birthday. After ordering drinks and choosing out meals,we were informed the a la carte menu was off and to pick from the bisro one, which we did.Food was instant microwave type. Not good.
Then the card facility was not working so had to find a cash point to pay.all in all not a good experience.
Excellent support from all the staff and made us feel really comfortable and looked after
Booked last minute online. Very helpful with an immediate confirmation. Staff were expecting us, quickly seated outside with blankets and a heater. These little touches helped enormously as we had our children with us and had been on a long car journey. Food was delicious!
Food was fabulous (as always!), smokers outside and the vapours drifted in through the open door which spoilt the ambience, coffee was cold, but quickly rectified. Will definitely be returning
Fantastic food, lovely atmosphere. Good service. Excellent value
Wonderful food, the scallops were sublime. Fantastic service. The cocktails and mocktails were so much fun and all finished off by the best ever sticky toffee pudding. We’ll be back! Thank you!
Great place, lovely atmosphere, good service. Would have been nice to have a specials menu but the food was excellent choice.
My pizza was not the best that I have ever had. The place lacks ambience. I wouldn't bother eating there again
The food was just delicious. I had the mushroom and asparagus creamy pasta, it was possibly one of the best pasta dishes I’ve ever eaten, so tasty. The onion rings were also delicious. My husband had the highland burger which was yummy. Only down side was the table was rather sticky and stuff peeled off it, condiments also had food stains. We would definitely visit again as the food was fantastic.
We had a table of three last night (Friday) and overall we thought the place was OK. The staff were lovely, they were all very friendly, our wine was delicious and two out of three of our main courses were great too, although, the carrots were rock hard! Unfortunately, I ordered the wild mushroom and asparagus pasta with the gluten free option and the first plate brought out wasn’t gluten free. I asked about it and it was taken back and remade but it was a little disappointing. The pasta was quite over cooked and I didn’t see any wild mushrooms at all! In the end, even after the mistake and me then having to wait for my dish to be brought out, I wasn’t offered anything, even a free drink or coffee or a scoop of ice cream! It’s a real shame about that because I actually really liked the venue itself and the staff but sadly, it left a bit of a bad taste (metaphorically speaking) which means I doubt I’ll ever be back again. Having worked in hospitality for 15 years, I know how it all goes and I know mistakes are easily made. I’m not saying this place is bad, just a little disappointing.
The meats we'd ordered were fantastic, I'd suggest a little more seasoning on the vegetables though.
Nice sunny evening sat outdoors by the stream is the place to be.
Overall very good, highly recommend.
Lovely food and very friendly staff.
We ate here twice and both times the food was very nice. Staff were lovely and very attentive.
Tried the lemon meringue cocktail and it was delicious.....even got the recipe from the barman/waiter.
