The host, Stephanie, was fantastic. After meeting her, it went downhill from there. No one checked up on us after we sat down, when we finally did, we placed our order. Our server didn't give us enough waters for the table, took a while to give us our second soda, rarely ever checked up on us. Food was subpar at best (although, yes we did eat it all). It was bland and I wanted to ask for some salt but our server was nowhere to be found.
I love the food-- serve unusual and delicious Italian food--had cannelloni stuffed with lobster and crab with bordelaise sauce, crisp Caesar salad, gnocchi, delicious creme brulee.
delicious mussel pasta and fruity sangria. best visit
Service was good. Food and drinks not so much. Super pricey for mediocre food. Desserts were worse than dinner. Coconut pie was bland and the the Chocolate Lava cake was super dry with no lava. Our server was super nice.
All of our food at Italy on Gilman was delicious. We had the fried burrata salad, a little gems salad with citrus and feta, and two yummy pastas.
The only drawback seemed to be a scarcity of wait-staff, but I think all restaurants are having that problem. And we had a delightful waiter who knew about the wines and served our food at the perfect pace. The creme brulee was creamy and the adffogato was PERFECT!!!
We can't wait to go back.
Overall, a solid first date night dinner out. Was nice to see the restaurant busy with tables of families and groups of friends. Was a little concerned that we chose Siberia upstairs, but the service was professional and attentive. The menu had a good variety of dishes to choose from, all well executed from our experience and what we saw around us. And there was ample parking in the back lot. They're targeting a crowded market of upscale Italian places, but you certainly can't go wrong at Italy on Gilman.
It's so rare to have a place hit virtually every note but they certainly did it on "date night". Well done gang. See you soon!
Excellent food in an attractive environment. The service could be improved. Our server rarely checked back with us.
Salads were delicious for our reunion lunch. First time to the restaurant and was a very good experience. Staff was congenial and allowed us to spend time at our table.
Small tables. Excellent food. Busy servers. Courteous service. Decor is a bit cold. Cocktails were delicious.
We brought the grandparents to the Italy on Gilman. As a party of 7, we had all the personality to go with that. People who teased, people with questions, a gluten allergy, a person who needed to add to his meal because the appetizer wasn’t enough. You know- family dynamics. The staff not only remembered every detail (like one was still thinking about her drink and another would like more bread while another wanted some salt and pepper), but they tended to it quickly, with great humor and kindness, and without error. All of our plates arrived in perfect timing. And everybody loved their food. The only complaint was that the coconut custard pie was not custardy or coconuty enough. Considering all of the opinions, that is a 9.75 out of 10 experience!
This has turned into a go-to restaurant for Italian food or just a simple dinner with friends. The outside seating is ideal.
Very yummy! Great menu! And so fun! Highly recommend!
The food, service, and ambiance was wonderful!
Overall pretty good. The chocolate lava cake was a disappointment. Was not warm and filling wasn’t soft. For $12 a big disappointment. Also, surprised that corkage fee was charged ($18) since we also bought a bottle off the menu.
Pasta entrees were good (and risotto also) but the veal and the chicken were just so so.
Absolutely could not be happier… never heard of the resturant, it popped up as we were on the Bay Bridge and searched for best seafood in Berkeley… Open Table popped up with a open slot in 20 minutes, went right to it . Beautiful decor, food was five stars, prices reasonable. We have new bay area favorite
We had a graduation celebration dinner here. It was perfect! The food was delicious, the decor and service were lovely. It was a truly gorgeous experience which the whole group has continued to praise, days later. I have already recommended this spot a number of times. 5 stars!!
Very nice birthday dinner last night that Italy on Gilman. Sitting upstairs in was a very nice open ambience. The melon salad and the salad with beats were both very very good. Make sure to ask for the facaccio bread which didn't seem to come out until we asked for it. It was soft and yummy. The dinners were all very good, I wouldn't say great and they included federal lasagna and the pasta with clams. I'd say the 2 biggest highlights were the desserts which included coconut cream pie although it had some fancy Italian name and creme Brule. The other highlight was the service with a very nice Italian waitress who smiled under her mask and gave smart recommendations. While the food was all very good and gets 4 stars the overall experience was a 5. We will be back.
Dust you chandeliers and have your waitstaff greet patrons
Friendly staff. Service was very good. The quality of the food, particularly the pasta, was not impressive. It was obvious to me that the pasta was sitting out for a while since both my penne and my son's fettucine was hardened and stuck together. For the price they charged I expected the pasta to be of better quality.
First they would not give us the table we liked saying that it was set for 4 instead of 2.
We ordered linguine pescadero w marinara sauce and was assured that it was not spicy. My mouth burned after one bite. Then I ordered linguine vongole which is not supposed to be spicy and it was again spicy. I could hardly eat it. So I took it home, washed it thoroughly in chicken broth before I can finish the dish. Maybe they should change the name to something else, as it is certainly not Italian.
Great food, good service, friendly staff
Food excellent . Prices great.
Service was slow but kind waiter .
Had booked a party way in advance and upon arrival they had to last minute put two tables together that were different sizes to accommodate.
Nice restaurant set-up, enjoyable and comfortable dining experience, great parking. Prices are about right. I do feel the place is trying to find a balance between a bistro and finer Italian dining. If given a choice, I'd encourage to add some nice table clothes, despite the casual appeal.
Excelent service & very good food
My third visit, never disappointed, usually impressed. Main attraction is the food, then the ambience. Always changes in the menu and the specials which is appreciated. Wine and mixed drinks consistently good. Good place for conversation.
The atmosphere and service both were casual and lovely, but the food was such a disappointment and the prices, including for wine, were high for what was offered. My shrimp pasta had rubbery shrimp and uninspired wine sauce, my husband's tortellini were gummy and in an over-rich cream sauce with over-cooked peas. Berkeley could really use another upscale Italian joint but this is not it.
Great food and atmosphere! Highly recommended. We had a great time!
All the food was really good. I will be going back.
We were 30 minutes late for our reservation due to Covid vaccinations and they accommodated us anyway. Service was a bit slow, but understandable on Mother’s Day. The food was excellent, the ambiance was pleasant and the staff was friendly.
The food was fine, basic Italian food. The margarita pizza wasn’t very great, however the lobster ravioli dish was pretty good. Portions weren’t overwhelming which is good. The drinks were very good, not sure of the wine list because I wasn’t offered it at anytime.
Excellent food and service. In one word “ Quality “ Keep up the hard work it will pay off!
I made a late reservation at the restaurant for Mother's Day and was thrilled that they could accommodate us. The interior of the restaurant is nicely decorated, and they had some lovely Italian music playing in the background.
I thought the food was delicious. The appetizers were great and the dessert was yummy too.
The only reason I withheld a star, is that the server was a bit slow with drink refills and water. This could just be due to Covid staffing. I would give them the benefit of the doubt as she was polite and pleasant. Probably not her fault, but it felt as if she had too many tables to care for.
I'd definitely return and would not hesitate to recommend to others.
(They also had a nice selection of cocktails, beer and wine)
Excellent Italian food! Service was very slow but they had just reopened for indoor dining. We would definitely go here again.
We loved the outdoor seating. The staff were all professional and friendly. They were overwhelmed by the crowd, and we had to make a special request to get a glass of water.
The clam linguine was delicious. We definitely will be back and hope that they will be more fully staffed.
We know it is a transitional time.
Our first return to dining out and it was great! The only problem was the lack of staff, which seems like it's going to be the norm everywhere for now. Our waiter did the very best he could and we didn't mind being patient. Still, can't wait to go back and try other dishes.
Great food, reasonably priced. Service was good. We had a party of 8, we had to wait until the waiter first service us, but once he came the service was fine. Everyone enjoyed the food and are looking forward to going back.
