Izakaya (2F) - No Ramen
The Izakaya is a full service restaurant featuring small plates of Japanese tavern fare, as well as a full bar with cocktails, wine, beer, and a large selection of sake and Japanese spirits.
Food was AMAZING!!!!
The food here is phenomenal. Every single dish was delicious!
Visited to celebrate my birthday. We were seated quickly and attended to quickly as well. Waiter was excellent! Very knowledgeable. My favorite part was the ginger beer and chicken platter (forgot the name but looked like nuggets).
All In all, had a great experience!
I’d like to try the ramen downstairs next time 😁
I booked a table at Izakaya for my bachelor party dinner, and I was not disappointed. The food was excellent. Our favorite was the beef tongue and the catfish, but it was all good. Staff were very helpful, attentive, and indulged us for pictures throughout the meal. The sake tasting was outstanding - lots of variety and expanded my sake palette. I appreciated the opporunity to speak with one of the sake makers! I will definitely be coming back.
This place is fantastic. The food was absolutely fantastic. We had 12 dishes to share and every one of them was delicious and executed perfectly. Unique flavors, textures and combinations. The space is dark and well decorated with unique lighting over every table and pop culture framed images on the walls. Casual and relaxed. Our server was the bomb. Steered us to the best things to try, helped with drink orders and a total master of every dish on the menu. I can’t wait to go back. The chef won Iron Chef twice (we didn’t know before dining there, but haven eaten there I’m not surprised).
We tried out this restaurant as one of the diners had never eaten Japanese food. Everything was delicious. Plus the service was impeccable. We had special accommodations because of mobility issues of one of us. The management made special efforts for us as did the staff. This restaurant is outstanding on all levels.
This is my second visit to Izakaya. The first time, the food was excellent, the flavors were beautifully composed, and everything tasted fresh. I was severely disappointed this time. The dishes tasted like they were put together on an assembly line and it seemed like there was an entirely different team in the kitchen. What a shock.
This place is great, would come back, very fun, unique food, great alcohol selection. Dishes embody character that match the space. It’s a yeehaw for me.
Food is always good and eclectic. Service was great. The Sake Bombs are very good. Hard to read the menu due to very low lighting. Bring a flashlight.
We had a great dinner at Izakaya Friday night. The cocktails were fantastic, so is their sake selection. The chicken skin yakatori special was probably my favorite. Can't wait to go back.
Daikaya never disappoints and tonight’s meal was elevated. The poke with wafer, enoki mushrooms in miso butter, beef tongue skewer and catfish karaage were outstanding. Highly recommend. Great cocktails too!
had a great time with my 16 year old son. We will be back!
Cool atmosphere wish there was ramen but the bento lunch box had a bunch
Staff is extremely helpful! Very knowledgeable about Japanese food, culture, geography, you name it. The food is great, we enjoyed a deviation from the typical sushi and ramen Japanese food we’ve always eaten.
Great service. Thank you.
Phenomenal server. Food was excellent and price point is very accessible for a small-plate style restaurant. Would highly recommend it.
Worst meal in a long time. 4 of us came for the tasting menu during restaurant week. Overall each course was disappointing. The flavor of everything was the same for each course and that flavor was nothing special. Chicken was a bit undercooked, noodle dish tasted like an Alfredo, with tip the total was $235 so not a cheap meal by any means. I would save your money and go somewhere else
The food was good and the restaurant experience was a good value.
Poor service, food was greasy, nothing that we ordered was bad, but nothing really popped. In a city like DC where you have so many options, this just wasn't anything special.
Pretty bad food, including appetizers (small bites) main dish and desserts. There was not even one item that was enjoyable
I have been here several times over the past several years and have always enjoyed the food. Didn’t realize it was restaurant week this time, and the selections were somewhat disappointing. It would have been nice to be able to opt out and order from regular menu.
Food is terrible.
We usually have a great meal at Izakaya, but the restaurant week menu was not very good.
food - fantastic. exciting but accessible to non-foodies too. quirky and fun atmosphere. attentive and quick service. can't wait to go again!
We’ve been to Daikaya numerous times and have been curious about Izakaya. My only regret is we waited so long. It was amazing! The offerings were quite creative and inventive. The uni and quail egg shooters were phenomenal. The roe provided a very nice surprise at the end. The tuna tartare was the best I’d ever had and the chicken livers just melted in my mouth. Izakaya is a trip down umami lane.
Extremely bland food, expected at least close to authentic Japanese experience. However, the menu seemed to be European/American food using Japanese food. Overpriced with little actual flavor. Barely an Asian Fusion restaurant when the food just tastes like what you would get at another Spanish/European style restaurant.
The Izakaya is incredible. The service was amazing, and Mike (our server) was VERY knowledgeable about all the drink selection they had, including the shochu, and was very friendly and gave incredible service. The beef tongue is unreal, the best beef tongue I’ve ever had. We’ll definitely be back every time we’re in D.C!
Great spot for a solo meal! Sat at the bar in a corner seat and read a book. The bartender gave me some recs for what to eat and I had a wonderful meal. Nicely done Japanese/western fusion with a really cool ambiance.
This was such a wonderful meal! We didn’t know that one of the owners (and chefs) had gone undefeated on iron chef twice! We had some amazing scallop, tuna poke tartare (the best!), enoki mushroom, grilled okra, grilled zucchini, and some dessert. Everything was unique, seasoned perfectly and tastefully presented. Service was also great!
Amazing experience! From the food to the service, I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and will definitely be back.
Drinks were good but the food was better. The small plates were quite enjoyable and mostly suitable for sharing. In particular the Tuna tartare, the chicken leg skewer were excellent. The only disappointment was the raw octopus in a fermented vinegar. It was a very acquired taste and not to any of our liking. If you avoid this one plate you will have a great and reasonably priced meal in an engergetic atmosphere!
Excellent. Love the place
Server Tom was fantastic. Excellent knowledge of menu and Japanese Whisky. Enjoyed the beef tongue a lot.
I usually love this place but a couple of the dishes fell flat this time. We usually order the Enoki mushrooms and love them but this time they were stringy and the flavor was lacking. The mushroom custard was also disappointing. Hopefully this was just an off night.
Been here 3 times and each time I found the food, cocktails and service to be superb. Love it!
This is more of an experience. The dishes are very small but unique. My husband and I ordered about 14 dishes and were finally full. Our server, Shelby, was the BEST! She went above and beyond by printing our ticket to a concert without us even asking her!
We would return for another dining adventure.
Food is amazing, atmosphere is very fun and lively
I had a great time. I will definitely be back again!
While the service was decent (server was friendly and generally there when we needed him), the food was disappointing. While nothing was terrible, most of our dishes were bland and non-interesting, especially when compared to how they’re described on the menu. None of us were impressed with any of our selections, and the chicken thighs and udon were the only two dishes we all agreed tasted good (not fantastic, but pretty good).
We had high hopes for the rice balls, chicken skin skewers, pork and Brussels Sprouts, and whole fish, but none met our expectations. Again, none were bad, but none we’d order again.
All in all it was kind of a letdown. The Ramen downstairs is usually fantastic, so I recommend staying on the 1st floor and passing up on the the 2nd floor experience.
