Jack's Bar & Steakhouse
Not a good experience. For starters, we were not familiar with many of the wines that were available and our waiter had no advice for us. My entree came with the sides my wife ordered and vice versa. We were a party of four. My NY Strip was more fat than steak. I literally had just a handful of edible bites. At least the fries were ok since that was primarily what I ended up eating. I would expect better if I had spent $10 on the steak. My wife ordered lamp chops medium rare and they were pretty close to well done. We had traveled from out of town, was up at 4am the day we went and had missed lunch. By the time we got there, we were too tired to have them cook everything all over again. The waiter never came back to check how our meal was anyway. It was early, around 5pm on a Sunday night so it wasn’t that crowded. I typically don’t write reviews but they had no excuses. I’ll definitely pass next time I’m in New Haven.
Celebrated two birthdays
Great night - dinner before the shoe at Shubert - steak was great - love the 20% off if going to the show
Was looking for a nice restaurant to have dinner with my 8 year old daughter before a show at the Shubert. Very convenient location. Had the meatballs small plate. The meatballs and sauce were Perfect. Then ordered the NY strip. It was cooked to perfection. Daughter had pasta from the kids menu. She enjoyed it. I would definitely go back.
Fantastic serviceand the food was amazing! It was my first time here and I would definitely go back!
We celebrated 2 Birthdays, had a wonderful meal and enjoyed our experience. We started with drinks and apps at the bar. Our waiter was prompt and very accommodating. Our steaks were delicious and cooked properly. Overall good time and will return again.
Overall very good. Steak, NY Strip tender and tasty. More of a Bar atmosphere than a fancy steak house.
The food was good and the service was good. I would not return because the noise level was too loud.
I have been to Jack's several times and it is one of my favorite restaurants in New Haven. Normally they have great service and fantastic food. Unfortunately, the night we went (for an early Saturday evening dinner at 5:30pm) there was a college "pub crawl" that changed the entire ambiance, service and quality of food. The noise level was crazy. It was just so different from the other times we had visited, like a totally different restaurant.
I hadn't even finished my dessert and a server (not my server) came over and asked me to leave because there were others waiting for a table who had a reservation. Although I ha a reservation myself, I was insulted that I was the one asked to leave when no one else was asked to leave. When I asked to speak to a manager, the manager apologized and stated that there was actually no one waiting to get a table. He went on to say that he would have the server who approached the table come over to apologize as well, but that was all that he could do because he was his "blood brother". The manager further insulted and offended me with his comments by stating that they usually look to ask people who may have been there for a while to move to the bar. However, it took an exteremly long time for my meal to come out after ordering.......If you want good service without being insulted and/or offended, this is not the place for you.
This was my first time at Jack’s for happy hour & the food, ambience & service were all perfect! I wish I had gotten the name of our server because he was great & helped with my many questions & recommendations. I will definitely be back for happy hour & for dinner as well.
I made reservations a week in advanced and was not told that there would also be an event taking place that night. My date and I were forced to sit in the small closed off room to slightly lower the noise level. We could barely hear each other while trying to hold a conversation. Our waiter was nice but he mixed up our order and my steak was not cooked properly.
I would definitely recommend steakhouse. The food was excellent, however the service I was received was really disappointing. One of my friends asked for extra bread and our waiter took approximately 15 minutes to get it and then we asked for mayo for our fries when the food came out and he didn’t even bother getting us it. We asked a different waiter with a very nice groomed mustache if we can have mayo and he got it in less than a minute. That waiter towards the end of the night was basically our waiter. I asked him about the type of desserts the restaurant had and he was nice to explain in detail, he didn’t rush at all. The food is great but that waiter was terrible.
The entrees were great -- especially the steak and the short ribs -- but the sides left a lot to be desired. My companions twice cooked baked potato was awful. It looked like it was made days before hand, frozen, and then microwaved. It was inedible. Also the desert we had, the chocolate mousse creme brulee, tasted like pudding with blueberries in it. It has no crispy top, like creme brulee. It was not very good.
We will definitely go back here and give it another shot, since my short ribs were the best I have ever had.
Jack’s is okay but there is no wow factor with the food. It was cooked correctly but nothing stood out. The NY strip was okay but not worth $40+ and the baked potato was just...well a baked potato, no signature. My wife had sea bass and it was average. The bar area was attractive and lively. The drinks are similar to every pub on the block. There were a few other unsatisfied customers next to us, maybe just an off night for the kitchen.
Amazing food and drink selection. Exceptional service!!
Worst Valentine’s Day dinner ever. We waited 2 hours for our food. I’ll never visit this restaurant again.
We waited over an hour and a half for our food after ordering. There were 2 separate groups of people that came in after us ordered ate and left all before we even got our food.
Great valentines dinner
I have visited Jack's six times in the past 11 months dining alone and in a group of 6. I have been completely pleased with every aspect of my dining experience.
Great place, amazing food
Everything was amazing from the hospitality to the bill
Food was very good. It was annoying that happy hour discounts were only available if you sat at the bar. Service was quick.
My steak was barely cooked When I asked for medium rare and I asked my waiter to have them cook it a little more and he gave me an attitude. My plate came back they had put my whole plate in the oven so my vegetables and potatoes were over cooked due to being put in the oven with my steak. My waiter didn’t ask how it was cooked afterwards, just put my plate on the table and walked away. I don’t usually ask anyone to fix my food but considering I was spending over $50 on just the steak itself I wanted it at least to be cooked. I’m very disappointed in them
Great steak cooked to perfection. Our server was excellent. Highly recommended
We’ve been here before and it never disappoints! The food is amazing and worth the price. Great wine and beer selection. It’s a must-go for us when we visit our daughter in college. A++++
Quiet and classy. Great for weekday work lunch. Food is solid, price is commensurate with the service and quality of food.
I was there for dinner which was very tasty, but it seemed like a pretty cool bar with a fun croud.
Best steak in New Haven. Great staff. Great owners who are involved and at the restaurant every day. Steaks cooked to perfection. Ribeye and Ricotta Gnocchi, get it!
We had a very poor experience at Jacks. We were expecting an upscale steakhouse, however the food and environment left much to be desired. On top of that, at approximately 9:45 in the middle of our meal a DJ started playing music very loudly that filled the entire restaurant. We weren’t able to speak any longer and just had to leave. Overall- the experience wasn’t worth the price.
Excellent place, great bar set up. Wonderful people and food was spot on!
We went later of a Friday night, 8:30. The food was excellent. The service was OK. The ambiance was like eating in a nightclub, from the LOUD music to the young girl getting drunk sick in the bathroom. Maybe on a different night it is better, but for the menu it was not what I was expecting.
They “forgot to make my meal” then asked if I still wanted it since 40 minutes had already past and all of the other people in my party received and finished their meals. Ridiculous.
Really like this place for the food and location. The only thing that baffled us was that when we asked for certain wines, they didn’t have them. They offered us other ones that were good but this happened at another time I ate there.
They need to stock the bar with the items they have in their menu.
Family New Year’s Eve dinner. Salads were good. Green beans were delicious. Steaks were average- smaller than expected, rib eye was shaped like a fillet mignon and tasteless per my husband. I had risotto with short ribs that was ok. Bottom line- for $300.00 I wouldn’t go back.
Food was great as usual...
This was our first time here but I know we will be back. We sat in the back room, very cozy & quiet. The food was very good and they had a nice selection of wines. I must say our server Diego was wonderful and I look forward to seeing him again. Thanks for a great Christmas dinner
Was an excellent experience. The food and the service was outstanding. The personnel make the difference. Highly recommended.
Good food ... very much overpriced.
