Kanishka in the heart of Mayfair focusses on the unexplored cuisine from the so called ‘Sister States’ of India – in the North East which are – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. It has a food culture that is as vibrant as its heritage and as beautiful as its people. From lanes packed with locals carts serving speciality dishes, to rows of eateries that overflow onto roads, the streets of North East India are a gastronomic kaleidoscope. The North East region offers a mixed culture of Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism which clearly reflects in the cuisine. Sumptuous North East dishes come with a combination of a humble approach and a complex melange of flavours. There is less use of spices and oils in this region, compared to rest of India.

Don't let the scoring i gave fool you. I have yet to give outstanding to any restaurant. The food was an excellent mix of old and new skool indian. I had the non-veg taster menu. It's not cheap then its is comparable to the market in this bracket of fine dining. If anything slightly cheaper than its competitors. The wine pairing was well thought out. As with pairings it takes some skill and its a difficult job as naturally indian food does not have pairing done over millennia like its European counterparts. Indian food did not evolve to be mixed with wine. The choices worked very well and accentuated the primary flavors of each dish. They dared to add a couple of reds a risk which payed off. Portions were very good leading to a crescendo of a goats curry, creamy dhal complete with perfectly light and fluffy nan and rice. A nod to home style indian where variety and food is plenty. Bringing back memories of my younger days when my parents hosted dinner parties at home. The lighting was dark perfect for winter days. I went on sunday first sitting and it was sunny outside. I really liked the booth seating. The service was very good and it was a quite sunday late afternoon so am being a little forgiving. Not quite yet the polished perfection of a star or too. I say that having worked on the floor and in a kitchen not from an air of arrogance. I will be back to try out some of the other dishes. Certainly worth a visit.

Excellent service from friendly, courteous, knowledgeable staff. 1 minor error rectified immediately, no qualms. Food was not as tasty as we had hoped/expected when Michelin stars were mentioned so regularly in conversation. Atmosphere a little lack lustre for a Friday night in Mayfair too. Wish them well, maybe we got an off night.

Having been to 2 of Atul’s previous restaurants I was keen to see how his new one measured up.
We both ordered the tasting menu, I had the paired wines.
All the dishes were outstanding. My personal favourite was the scallop dish followed by the goat curry. The use of spices was perfect, not overpowering but flavourful and enhanced the produce used.
Service was uniformly excellent. The venue was also spot on, not overpowering me glitzy but with the appropriate sense of luxury.
Would highly recommend this restaurant, I wish them all the best and I’m sure this will become another successful part of a Atul’s empire!

The decor was cool and attractive. My friend and I were impressed there was a Set Menu on a Saturday and we chose from that. The grilled fish was tasty but on a little mound of mash potato that wasn’t particularly flavourful and in a sauce that was not very attractive. It came with nothing which for Indian cuisine that is so generous, was very disappointing. A little pot of rice and a small dish of dal or a vegetable would have been a lovely touch. My friend’s Doi with watermelon and rose granita was terrific. My kheer was underwhelming. We went with very high hopes and were disappointed. I may try it again before recommending it to friends. The chef Atul Kochar is so highly regarded, I am hoping he will take on board comments.

Good use of bold, sometimes novel flavours which at the same time combined well with each other. We had the 3-course set menu and ordered bread and dal on the side. (that was too much, should have had two courses and the sides or just the three courses) The mains were our favourites (beetroot kofta and sea bass), the rabbit starter was nice and tender with a tasty sauce (cherry or raspberry or such), the chaat starter too sweet for our tastes, as was the yogurt dessert. The rice pudding was good, and looked gorgeous. The dal was of the very creamy variety, could barely taste the lentil, which both of us disliked, but really my fault for not asking the servers when we ordered. Atul made the rounds twice to check up on the diners and gamely posed for photographs with some of them, which was sympathetic. Overall I'd definitely go here again to check out the other dishes on their menu, if I had more disposable income. Happy with what we got for what was, for us, a bit of a splurge.

We went to see what the pop up would be like as I have had several great meals at Benares when Atul Kochhar was in charge. What a disappointment. The food was uninspiring and tepid. We had vegetable and kentish lamb dumplings - gangtok monks - the lamb ones had a small piece of seekh kebab stuffed inside the dumpling. Also had masala mixed grill - you could get better quality on any high street tandoori. Main course was lamb biryani which was passable and seafood alleppey curry which was virtually cold and served in an insipid sauce. Naan bread was hard. And to cap it all they ran out of rose wine - we had the last bottle in the restaurant! The meal was over £300 and we definitely won't be back! Very poor.

We loved the 2 starters, but we were disappointed with the main courses. The Tikka with Marzano was initially a taste sensation but we'd had enough of it after eating a few mouthfuls, it was too much, too rich and the rice wasn't enough to balance it. We found that everything was too rich and creamy. The Raita, full fat and heavy. The black Dahl, too creamy and thin in texture and salty. The bread basket too buttery. It was a coronary on a plate and we couldn't finish it. I ordered the mixed grill, the lamb chop was tender and tasty but I didn't think the mixture of fish and meat was great. My cocktail was lovely- baked apple sour. For someone with an eye on health, this is not for you, for others it's probably great. We won't go back.

A couple of hiccups:- our choice of wines chosen from the extensive list was not available - not a massive problem but we had chosen a spicy wine to match the spicy food- the alternative we were offered was a nice wine but not as well matched as our original choice. also our waiter dribbled a few pounds worth of it onto the table cloth, also not a huge problem, but in a high end restaurant with a reasonably expensive bottle of wine....
Now onto the food,We had the tasting menu, (one veggie), and both were absolutely delicious. Some really tasty dishes, and all served and described beautifully.
Some innovative flavours as well as some traditional choices - I had the goat curry as one of my courses and it was amazing!
We would love to try again.

We chose the tasting menu and matching wines. All courses were good. The main course (venison and goat curry) was really good. Some of the entrees lacked interest for me. The quality of the matching wines was good but it was clear the waiting team knew nothing about them other than the general patter. Any questions on the wines were met with blank expressions. The service was efficient and friendly. We were sat downstairs which was lacking in any atmosphere on what was half full on a Friday night. The plants on the ceiling make it claustrophobic for me and the interior designers should be sacked for the 1980s decor.

Overall, pretty underwhelming despite the generally good food and certainly not worth the prices being charged. There are much more exciting, fun places to dine in Central London for this money.

Having been to Atul Kochar’s restaurants before, we were keen to try this one when we saw it on open table. We were so impressed by the decor , we felt comfortable, the food was outstanding as was the service. Ten out of ten for Phoebe who made us feel so welcome, we will definitely recommend to everyone!
