Kanishka in the heart of Mayfair focusses on the unexplored cuisine from seven sisters of India - THE NORTHEAST which is - Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura & Sikkim.

It has a food culture that is as vibrant as its heritage and as beautiful as its people. From lanes packed with humble carts serving speciality dishes, to rows of eateries that overflow onto roads, the streets of Northeast India are a gastronomic kaleidoscope.

It is our humble attempt to bring this enchanting cuisine & culture in the heart of Mayfair through our experimental yet honest cooking at Kanishka.

Firstly the food. The restaurant is based on dishes form North East India and there were a few interesting local variations that were worth trying like the noodles and some of the condiments that came with the food had really interesting and distinct flavours. However, on the whole there weren't enough of dishes that were significantly different or stood out from the usual North Indian food. Don't get me wrong, the food was good, but not stand out or particularly memorable. The starters were better and more interesting than the mains.

The service was friendly, however it was a bit muddled and confused at times which considering how quiet the restaurant was a surprise. I guess this is probably down to the fact that everything is bedding down as the restaurant has not been open long.

HOWEVER, what I really have a gripe with is the drinks prices. So the wines are probably around 4 times mark up, which is a push even for Mayfair but it happens. But what really got my back up was the drinks prices. I thought I was in a five star hotel in Dubai as we were charged between £12 to £14 for a single gin (Hendricks and some other normal gin) and then paid around £3 for a tonic mixer. Bear in mind this was served in a tall slim glass overly packed with ice, so the amount of tonic was probably no more than 75ml, i.e. less than half a bottle; I mean seriously Mr Kochhar, you really are blatantly overcharging your customers and so out of principle I will avoid your establishments in the future.

To sum up: the food is pretty good, but not brilliant. The overall experience is average at best and overly expensive, especially when pitched against some of the truly class Indian Restaurants in Mayfair like Indian Accent, Jamavar and Gymkhana which stand out for all the right reasons.

Not having experienced much Indian cuisine, I’m pretty sure I was ruined eating here. We ate off the set menu, giving us a good taste of several dishes. Everything was delicious and far outshined any other Indian we’ve had. The waitstaff was very attentive and helpful with giving us understanding of the menu. If you are going for Indian in London, this is the place to stop.

I had a great lunch with my son at Kanishka. Food was amazing, we shared our choices and had the chicken tikka pie, scallops, venison and sea bass in banana leaf followed by the chocolate parfait for desert, the flavours and delicate spices were a pleasure and the cocktails to die for.
Can't wait to go again, will return soon with friends.

There was nothing wrong with our lunch but it was not special. We were eating from the set lunch menu and I had samosa followed by chicken thing. Samosa was Ok the chicken thing was a bit bland. It was a big pink bowl of baby food with 3 lumps of chicken on top. Very filling and certainly edible but in no way a taste sensation. My dessert was a bit odd. Some solid dumplings in a sweet fruit syrup. Not very nice.

service was good and restaurant is nicely decorated. The wine we chose was v nice. Gymkhana still gets my vote.

Atul Khochhar’s newest restaurant such a disappointment! In Mayfair London; gave us this table by the window for four of us!!! This table is for two guests! Trying to squeeze in more revenue by squeezing guests in!!! NOT RIGHT!!! Went there last Saturday 6th April. The food was not great too. The vegetarian dishes were bland and I hardly eat anything!! Atul was not at the restaurant too otherwise would have mentioned all this to him. There are soooo many excellent fine dining restaurants in Mayfair and London. Such a disaster! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

Rounded off an afternoon in nearby Regent Street and Bond Street with a family meal here. It was absolutely delicious and the service was fantastic. This is Indian cuisine with notable influences of other nations. starters we had were the scallops, the tikka pie and the momo dumplings. All so tasty. Mains we had the goat curry and the chicken tikka with a range of sides. Again all fantastic. Great wine list. Bar was lively. Definitely want to go back again!

A mother's day treat for my wife and I.
This was our first visit. I understand the restaurant has been open for a month.
We enjoyed the best Indian food we have ever tasted.
The attention paid to us by the staff was wonderful.
The sommelier was so nice and knowledgeable and was the perfect guide to the wine list.
Samir, the chef, took time to chat with us about the history of the food and we compliment him on a delicious menu.
We shall certainly return and I will be bringing friends and colleagues to experience this superb gem in Mayfair.

+ve's = attentive service, innovative dishes which are both uncommon and demonstrate the excellence of the chefs, good communication between front of house staff, great knowledge of the menu and ability to recommend dishes to suit varying tastes
-ve's = a bit cramped (density of tables to floor space seems a bit high), inconsistency in terms of quality and execution of food is concerning, toilets are the smallest I have ever seen for such an establishment

I have now visited Kanishka twice, firstly during its soft launch (evening) and today for Mother's Day (lunch). Unfortunately, there seems to be a lack of consistency in terms of the quality and execution of the food as today the food was below par across a number of dishes.

We had a wide variety of dishes from the A la Carte menu and tried the Bhalla Papdi Chaat, Gangtok Momos (vegetarian) and Masala Mixed Grill for starters. The Bhalla was a bit soggy (unlike the 1st time we tried it) and the momos weren't anything to write home about. The Mixed Grill was still excellent though.

For mains, we had the Saag Paneer, Angoori Hing Aloo, Kanishka Signature Black Dal, Bread Basket, Basmati Rice, Dad’s Murg Makhani and a Vegetable Alleppey Curry. I was very disappointed with the Hing Aloo which last time was an absolute stand-out dish - today it was oily and lacked the subtle spicing and balance of sweet/sour/savoury. The Murg Makhani also didn't have the same level of flavour as last time. The best dishes were actually the rice (of all things) and the Saag Paneer (which was a genuine revelation).

My concern is that without Atul at the pass, on a lunch service with very few customers, there seems to be a lack of consistency in the quality and execution of the food which is surprising given that we had a better food experience during the soft launch!

I will give Kanishka another try for dinner but I can't recommend Kanishka for business lunches or entertaining clients purely based on the cramped seating

Precisely and exquisitely spiced, each dish revealing different layers of complexity and flavour. This was the nicest and most interesting Indian meal I have ever eaten and we would definitely return. We had the tasting menu for the Holi festival, which included a Tibetan noodle broth with quail which was outstanding, delicious momo dumplings with a sesame and tomato dip that was fantastic, and the mixed tandoori grill with lamb chop, chicken and prawn all perfectly cooked and delicately spiced with a fresh mint chutney that was great. The front of house team were faultless too and so friendly and helpful.

When we arrived, the restaurant temperature was roasting hot, it was pretty much unbearable. I had to go outside a number of times due to the heat and we hadn't even ordered yet. Eventually they turned the heating off and air conditioning on?!?!...so started to cool.

Service wise waiter forgot out order (he was honest enough to admit that I guess) so we waited over 90 mins for starters.

Got a photo with Atul and my friend as it was his birthday so that was nice and appreciated.

Now the most important bit ...food. The food was absolutely BRILLIANT couldn't fault. Every dish was great, butter chicken, mixed grill, goat, crab, pie all ace.

So service bad, restaurant temp bad, decor so so, food brilliant.

Thankfully we were on the soft launch so all the food was half price, I'd have been thoroughly disappointed if it was full price. The service was okay, but we were in the corner and the waiters couldn't see us and didn't bring us our drinks until I got up and asked. The food was okay, paneer makhani tasted like a supermarket curry and the veg biryani was pretty flavourless. Desserts were good, starters were okay (momos were great)

We had a fantastic evening at Kanishka using the hot dinners offer.
Great food, excellent service and good atmosphere.

Atul Kochar takes Indian food to the next level at Kanishka. I had such a hard time choosing from the menu, because everything sounded so good, but in fairness I could have just randomly chosen anything on the menu because every dish was a winner.
Service was friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was vibrant without being over-powering. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is a fan of Indian fine dining.
