Good food but Inattentive service
This was my second visit to Karnavar in South Croydon and I'm happy to say so much better than first! This time there were other diners which gave the place some atmosphere. The food is great, with some unusual combinations. It's wonderful to get a Biriyani, which tastes as good as if you were in Karnataka.
Delicious food, an interesting menu; much closer to The Cinnamon Club in style than a standard Indian restaurant. Decent cocktail menu and wine list. It is a relatively small space so was quite loud on a Friday evening. Perhaps go during the week if you like a quieter experience.
In general the food was excellent, with well balanced spicing on the majority of dishes.
The only dish that was disappointing on the tasting menu was the lamb main. While the lamb itself was very nice, the yam accompaniment was poorly judged, both too large for a tasting menu and very stodgy.
Manoj and his team continue to provide high end Indian/Keralan cuisine. The Sunday buffet lunch is very good quality with numerous interesting and delicious choices and excellent value for food this good. The individually prepared dosas and pancakes are not to be missed!
Waited to find the right excuse to visit this Michelin listed restaurant so Father's day was the the right time. Opted for the Fathers day brunch, which included starters, dosas live station. After which came the meat selection of salmon pakoras, tulsi seekh kebabs and chicken masala morsels with their dips. Once we tackled them came the main course, I chose the chicken makhani which came with an assortment of sides which at first looked less then adequate but that's was just a mirage as we were stuffed. It was good to see the chef come to check on us several times even explaining the various fusion miracles he produced. It all seemed to good to be true, as usually Indian food is judged by how quickly it can blow your head with the chillies. Here the heat was something that sat in the background to the depth of flavour that needed to be experienced beforehand. Had we found the jewel that lied in croydons Nile? Learning afterwards that the meat was all halal and not authentically prepared meant this was just another restaurant that had succumbed to pressure of a minority religious belief. Why does food have to be messed around with? I am in with diversity and acceptance. But it just seem to be going one way. How many Pakistani, Persian, afghani, turkish, etc restaurants cater for the non-halal contingent? Food for thought that! Shame that this would be our first and last visit to Karnavar.
The food at the restaurant was very good and I would recommend it. We had the 5 course tasting menu with the wine pairing. When each course was bought out the waitress described each dish as expected and they were all very interesting dishes. However, when the wine was delivered (by a different waitress) no description was given. The best we managed to get was "it's the second wine" and "it's the dessert wine" which was a bit disappointing.
Modern Indian Restaurant which we have visited several times. This was a get together with neighbour friends. Started quietly but then filled up. Service tended at times to be a bit slower. I liked my beetroot chat, and then the chicken. Spiciness can be varied by choice; my mild flavours were properly delivered. The menu has not changed for a very long time, and we were pleased to hear a new one is coming within a month. We were given a sample to try of the planned new scallop starter
I visited with my mum and husband who both love Indian food, especially Keralan. They were very happy with their food and the beer and wine selection was great.
Both my mum and I ordered a biryani, one chicken, one lamb. When they arrived and were ‘cracked open’ I thought they looked similar. When I tried my chicken, it definitely wasn’t chicken. It tasted and looked like lamb. I mentioned to the waitress who checked with chef, they assured me it was chicken.
It was still very tasty and I didn’t want to wait for it to be returned and a new one prepared, so I just carried on.
We asked for the left overs to be boxed up, at that point the chefs confirmed it was lamb. They gave us a reduction on the bill which was very good of them. I would still like to try the chicken biryani as it sounded delicious!
We will have to return to try it.
Service was excellent and food high quality.
I don’t think they have a tandoori oven, so the naan wasn’t the best, next time I will have peratha or chapatti.
I visited Karnavar on a blind date. Not only was the date stunning; so was the food! If you want the very best Indian cooking in this country, head for South End now! I commend it to everyone reading OpenTable today!
Food was good but not sure much different from any other Indian I’ve been to except more expensive. Only there just over an hour as service too quick really. Would have liked a bit more of a gap from eating poppadums for starter!
The quality and taste of the various items on Sunday Brunch was superb. The flavours were delicate and whilst innovating, had stayed true to the authetic taste. The service was non-intrusive yet courteous. Excellent value for money.
Have been for dinner before and enjoyed it so tried the Champagne Sunday Brunch. Food was good and varied but the champagne part of the brunch was a bit of a joke. Firstly got 5 raffle tickets as limited to 5 glasses and the glasses that were first brought were a sherry or port glass size. After being told they would fill them to the top so we got a full glass we complained and said that we would leave the champagne option and then the larger glasses appeared. Shame as the food is good and different but this cheapened the whole experience. Suggest that you re-think this. Restaurant has potential but it is things like this that will hold it back.
We had a lovely meal here for my husbands retirement. Food was excellent as always. Non intrusive staff and plenty of space to chat and have good time
Absolutely delicious champagne brunch and excellent value for money. We are extremely lucky to have a restaurant of this calibre in Croydon. If you haven’t been you are missing out.
We visited Karnavar for vishu lunch. Food was amazing but you can work on improving your service
Very good quality food and a lovely dining experience. Great value for the quality. We had the 5 course tasting menu which I would recommend for the first time experience. We will be back to try some more dishes.
An enjoyable dinner as always at Karnavar, though we felt it was time for some new dishes and a fresh menu. I enjoyed my Poached egg masala and Portobello mushroom ; neither were too hot for my palate. Likewise my wife liked the scallop sliced in three, though would have preferred some more scallop for the starter. Her sea bream was nicely cooked. All washed down with a South African white wine. Service quietly efficient.
Fantastic place - will go again and will be a regular
A creative take on Indian food. Absolutely delicious!
Great food, lovely cooking which feels authentic and modern at the same time. Highly recommended!
The food was great, though portions smaller than an average Indian restaurant , but a very long wait for food. This would not have mattered so much if service had been better...seemed as if staff were generally miserable and demotivated. I wouldn’t blame any particular staff member but management should take note as probably not paying enough attention to staff training, pay and making them feel valued. Best tasting Indian I’ve had in a long time and good cocktails, shame about the rest
The food was absolutely delicious and a great choice, but having been to this restaurant regularly, please, please change the menu as we are running out things to try but are reluctant to go elsewhere as this is definitely the best Indian restaurant in the area. Service was also very good and the speed of service considering how busy the restaurant was.
Great food, super flavours and unusual dishes. Service a little slow and restaurant a little small so can noise from other tables, especially as quite close together, but the good quality food makes up for that and probably better as a daytime place. Will be back
Good place to eat, easy location, service slow due to it being busy.
We booked this at the last minute and were not disappointed! Attentive staff from walking in the door to leaving; thoughtful suggestions when we had questions on the menu; fantastic food and drink, every crumb;
This is the third time I have dined at this restaurant and as on previous occasions the food was superb! The service has also been very good previously, however this time was exceptional due to a bubbly but professional Romanian waitress that served us. The only thing to watch out for is the description of the deserts which do not relate to the actual plate of food that is put in front of you, however they were delicious.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant!!
As they were a bit overwhelmed with Mother's Day and their buffet, we had to wait for our table, which when it was set up, wasn't great. However, they were apologetic and compensated us with prosecco and a couple of free sharing starters for our large party. The food was good overall.
We went for dinner at Karnavar last Saturday evening. After reading a lot about this restaurant I was very curious to try it out. Food was very good, the entire table was happy with their choices and all dishes where every well presented and tasty. Well done to the Chefs! The let down on that evening was the service, there is a lot of work to be done there. The bar was packed with dirty glasses the entire town we were there, we could see the person behind the bar checking her phone on several occasions... Nobody checked on us to see if the food we were OK with our food...also none of re person who served our table was able to give a proper explanation or give a confident recommendation of any dish. It was a real shame because food really met our expectations. After reading the Head Chef has worked in places like Claridges & Mandarin Oriental... We were expecting much more from the service point of view. We will probably return as the food was nice and hopefully the front of house will better than.
Real Indian food and a plesent atmosphere , informative and helpful staff. Nice bit of pork.
Was fantastic value, and a truly special dining experience. Quality and variety of food was excellent
We love Karnavar! Beautiful modern Indian food with authentic flavour.
They are very tight on the amount of alcohol for the Champagne brunch.
Food was incredible but staff are not that attentive or friendly.
It's quite expensive for what it is but a fun day.
Blown away by our Valentine's night dinner at Karnavar. Never eaten such heavenly , creative and authentic cuisine. So glad we found this gem of a restaurant near where we live. This place is a must visit if you come to croydon side for sure . Ambiance, staff all welcoming and soothing indian music in the background. Chef's brilliance and midas tocuh evident in all the dishes and no wonder we keep going back to this foodie heaven to make speical occasions more memorable.Thank you Karnavar.
Indian food like you've never had before. Very different from your regular curry
Excellent food, very creative cuisine, polite, friendly staff, enjoyed the evening out
Had a lovely valentines meal! The valentines set menu was definitely worth the value! It came with a three course meal plus canapés and a house cocktail. The setting was cute and calm, service was excellent! The meal was outstanding, flavours were firing beautifully in our mouths, the lamb was so tender, the scallops so fresh and all were beautifully presented. We don’t normally go for fine dining as we’re never full after, but here we were well fed, great portions, delicious and service was great! Highly recommend!
This was our fourth visit to Karnavar and the food was fantastic as always. It’s particularly good if you’re vegetarian though the meat and fish options are delicious too. The only downside is the mocktails that are always overly sweet and a disappointment. We’ll still go back as the food is amazing!
Very disappointing we were expecting Indian fine dining and the food we got was at best average. The price was NOT average the meal was £100 for 2 with a small carafe of wine and 2 beers! The service was something else they squashed all the customers into the front of the restaurant so it looks busy from outside when the rest of the restaurant was empty. The table
Next to us were half way through their starter when the waitress brought their main course and just crammed it onto the table!
After telling th waitress I was drinking sparkling bottled water TWICE she put tap
Water into my glass.
When we didn’t finish all of our food not one waitress but 3 came to ask why not like an interrogation.
VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED I will never return and never recommend could of gone next door where often go for half the price lovely food and good service.
Had a wonderful evening with my wife.thought it would be quiet on a wednesday evening,,the dining room was full. The food came in good time.Delectable food, good presentation, and engaging but non intrusive service.good one.....
