Kihon is a Japanese sushi restaurant located on Naples Island, Long Beach, California. Positioned right next to a host of other traditional restaurants, Kihon aims to provide a fusion of traditional Japanese dishes with a modern twist, focusing more on core ingredients such as fish and rice rather than sauces.
The restaurant specializes in ramen, tapas, soups, salads and specialty rolls. Sushi dinner platters are also available along with teriyaki chicken, beef and shrimp. Among the most popular dishes is the yellowtail sashimi with jalapeno, smoked octopus carpaccio, ceviche and calamari tempura. Kihon is open every day from 5:00PM to 9:30PM, with weekends extending the closing time to 10:30PM.

Ate at Kihon for the 2nd time and it was great. The service is outstanding. We had the smoked octopus that was amazing and I don't like octopus. That being said, the presentation of this dish is amazing with real smoke when it is delivered. The thinly sliced octopus was flavorful and not chewy like larger pieces. The sashimi was like butter. Fresh, delicate and flavorful. This by far is the best Sushi Restaurant in the Naples/Belmont Shore area. It is not a party sushi roll establishment, instead being a purveyor of high quality sea food both raw and cooked. A must visit.
Simply the best, freshest sashimi I've ever had anywhere. Outstanding, unassuming wonderful restaurant. A gem in LBC.
We went to Kihon during Dine Out Long Beach week. The Omakase special was amazing. The sashimi, sushi, tempura and Mochi Cocktail were so good that we are thinking about going back later this week. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient.
Came here for a low key Valentine’s Day and it was great💕
Kihon is our favorite sushi restaurant in Long Beach!!! Everything is amazing!!!
We have a subscription to Long Beach Opera, so looked for something interesting near the Beverly O’Neill Theater at the Convention Center. Kihon was perfect in every way. Wonderful food, excellent service and easy to park close by. The mark of any Japanese restaurant is how fresh the sashimi is, and this place is top rate!
We liked all the food, except the tempura ice cream. The tempura was under done. The service was very attentive and the food was really good.
Unbelievable Omakase!! Fresh fish and absolutely delicious!
Very excessive price for the fish quality. Not recommended for the high grade japanese restaurant lover’s. Too much american style
My partner and I have been to Kihon a couple of times and, while it will remain on our list, it won’t be in heavy rotation. It’s a nice, family oriented restaurant. The service is extremely slow. The food is fine. I’m allergic to gluten, and they do have tamari if you ask (at no extra charge, for which I am very grateful), but ours came to the table well after the first plate of sushi was delivered. Our server said he could only find one bottle that was almost empty, but said he would bring us more when he found it. He didn’t. But a table of four near us got two brand new bottles. Additionally, the albacore nigiri came with a light sauce that contained soy sauce (which was not indicated on the menu). Thankfully, we noticed before I ate any. But it was also touching the salmon nigiri that was next to it. The server asked if I wanted “one small piece” to make up for it, which I accepted. But it got to the table pretty long after we were done with the meal (long enough that we considered saying thanks but no thanks, but we couldn’t get anyone’s attention). It came ice cold and with wasabi (some of which is NOT gluten free and I did have a mild reaction that night); the combination of those attributes meant I couldn’t even taste the fish.
So, it was fine? But definitely not great. And I’d rather my health not be put at risk. We’ll probably go back again eventually, but there are so many other sushi options around. Overall, it wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t the best. If you have any dietary restrictions, be vigilant about checking every single thing that comes your way here.
The sushi at Kihon is so fresh and delicious. The Ramen is also excellent and great value item. We go out for sushi a lot and this is by far the best sushi restaurant in the Long Beach/Seal Beach/Los Alamitos area.
Amazing!!!! the sushi is always fresh and delicious.... we sit right at the bar and end up meeting great people and making new friends. Kihon is now one of our regular places to eat. can't wait to go back this weekend.
Small casual restaurant. Good service. Sushi was fresh and delicious.
The restaurant serves solid Japanese items, especially the sushi. If you feel like sushi, this is one of the best places in Long Beach.
Hands down best sushi spot in Long Beach! I'd highly recommend checking this place out when you get a chance. Make reservations they can get busy!
Kihon is a must for sushi in the Naples/Belmont Shore/Heights area. The fish exceptionally fresh, the preparation superb, service great and not intrusive, restaurant provides a clean, simple and step above neighborhood restaurant experience. We eat there weekly and friends come from outside the LB area to enjoy great sushi at a great price. Thanks!
Good food, good service, but timing on when the food came out was a little bit annoying. All of my food came out before my girlfriends and it took another 16 minutes for them to get her food out.
Better each time! This is the best Japanese restaurant around...the Best!
Pretty good tonkatsu ramen, shishito peppers were quite good, the octopus was just ok. The service was pleasant but slow and the restaurant is very loud so hard to have a conversation. I’d try it again sometime on a less busy night.
This restaurant has friendly and efficient staff. We visited on a Tuesday evening. I highly recommend making a reservation.
The food was fresh/good. The “Dude” was good. A friend had a spinach dish which all 4 of us liked a lot.
Parking was provided right in front of the restaurant and is off street parking.
Excellent service. Super fresh delicious fish in the sushi. Great place!
Great neighborhood sushi experience. TVs make it easy to come in alone for the sushi bar or dine at tables with friends. Nice mix of specials and dependable sushi. Overall, quite good near Naples.
This place is amazing. I was in Long Beach for the weekend and went on Thursday night. The sushi was incredible - they had an amazing selection and talented chefs. Chef Peter took excellent care of us. I have dined at many 1 to 3 star Michelin sushi restaurants around the world (25+ of them), and while this was a very different dining experience, the value was incredible. The nigiri, handrolls, gyoza, and the spicy tuna crispy rice were our favorites. Highly recommend this spot. Top notch food at unbeatable prices.
Great service. Great food.
Good sushi, nice variety and TV to watch sports.
We spent New Year's Eve. at Kihon and were so happy that we chose this restaurant. Great food, friendly service, nice ambiance , great bar menu and great sushi bar.
Amazing, the service and food are the best.
Peter you are a Super Star.
Good food. Great service. A little pricey for a quick bite.
We decided to go omakase and we really had a good time! Our chef Koji San was awesome. He informed us about what we were having each time he presented an item to us. Every plate tasted good but my favorite was the seared toro! Melts in your mouth kind of goodness! Would definitely recommend this place! Excellent food, excellent service.
We’ve finally found a good local sushi spot! After moving from LA to Seal Beach we’ve been searching out quality meals and after too many strike outs it’s nice to see a restaurant that actually has their isht together. The chefs made us special requests of both adult and kid friendly sushi. Thanks Kihon!
Best sushi in town! We love this place. Wish it was open for lunch too
The loudest restaurant I have ever been to! The service was fair at best and it’s expensive for what you get! Don’t think we are going back!
The best sushi and sashimi in Long Beach. Absolutely fabulous. Great service, too. Only negative is acoustics are bad so it is very noisy. This will be our go-to sushi restaurant.
We had a great time at Kihon with 3 generations in our group, including teenage son. We are able to order everything from the most unique sushi (teenager favorite), to dumplings to teriyaki and tempura platter. Softshell crab sushi is a favorite. Reservations recommended since the restaurant is small but popular.
Great sushi across the board. Fantastic service. We are very particular and this was fantastic and will come again next time we’re down in Long Beach
Wow, I told my Japanese sushi chef friend about the selection of fish that Kihon had available and he was impressed as well as my friend who dined with me, visiting from Japan. We were lucky to get seats at the sushi bar, I was told. I had requested sushi bar seats thru Open Table but the restaurant said it was first-come, first-serve only for the sushi bar
I guess I'm spoiled... everything was very good but a definite miss on the details. (service, wait staff, food)
First and last time I go to this place. Food was not that great.
It's too expensive for the quality
The best service!
