What Insiders Are Saying
If you want to make your brunch more literary, do it at Kramerbooks, a cafe and bookstore hybrid in Dupont.
Very poor value. Quarter of an avocado, one small size of sourdough and one scrambled egg for $17?!
Great place for brunch. We arrived just before it got crowded. Ambiance was terrific. Food was wonderful. Would definitely come back again.
Food was excellent. Our server was polite and efficient but we had a strong sense that the restaurant was short of staff Thursday during lunchtime. In particular, there was no one to seat us. We selected a table and were promptly waited on. The problem was that I had made a reservation though Open Table and my presence was not recorded. Later that day I received an email from Open Table asking why I had not kept my reservation. I explained and they accepted my explanation but that was not optimal. The server was good but he was very busy and getting refills and the check was a challenge. But overall I like the restaurant and will return.
The combination with the bookstore just makes it a winner. Not every meal has to be Michelin star and this is quick service, good food and a fun place to be.
Delicious food in a beautiful setting that feels casual but special. Quiet relaxing dinner. Always enjoy the experience and delicious food! Good service, too. Plus you can enjoy shopping for books, etc.
We were disappointed about the minimal vegan options. Also, were told immediately before being served, that our chicken pot pies didn't have any crust, they had run out of crust. Whaaaaaat?
Visiting DC - great brunch-bookstore
Excellent food and service! Great vibe and fabulous books!
Is great fun to eat and shop for books. Always find some thing good to nourish my mind as well as my stomach. Nice variety of food, often more tradition foods but with an updated, tasty twist.
We had brunch here many moons ago and returned for a group dinner Friday night. Unfortunately, there were many problems with the food and the service wasn't great, either. One order of mac & cheese arrived room temp. My filet was good, but the side potatoes were so undercooked they were still crunchy in the middle. The veggie lasagna was overly salted. They didn't have pisco for the drink I ordered, then they ran out of Pimms and all of us had to either switch drinks or leave. We decided to leave. Servers rarely checked on us, I guess because we were seated upstairs. I felt the need to apologize to my friends for bringing them here! :(
Always a favorite stop when I'm in DC. Great food, creative cocktails and a solid beer list.
We both ordered crab cake Benedict and the server brought out our food, mine had a large shell on the egg and my Benedict came with ham too, but wasn’t supposed to. My girlfriends Benedict was cold so she sent it back. They brought her a new one and the poached egg was hard, third time the egg was just alright still on the hard side but one of the staff members said they’d take it off the bill. When the bill came the only things taken off were a $4 late and hot chocolate. She has been coming here since she was a child and this was my first time. We were both very disappointed and not sure we will be returning.
The food and bookstore was great, but overall, I would say go here during the day for a low key meal.
recommended by concierge at the Fairfax. Found it to be a real gem. Maybe our favorite for the week. Friendly service and wonderful food.
Delicious pre-movie meal at Kramerbooks and Afterwords Cafe! The noise level was a little difficult at times for conversation, but in general we were very impressed with the server and the meal. I had the scallops with a lovely risotto, and my partner had the cajun fettuccine pasta. For a starter we ordered the mushroom flatbread, which was absolutely delicious with a mild arugula and cheese. We had entirely too much food, so we got a take-home bag for lunch the next day!
The risotto was perfectly creamy and al dente, which is one of the best ways to have risotto. The scallops and shrimp were both tender and delicious. I hope to visit again soon.
We had a great time celebrating my mother in law ‘s Birthday.
Staff and food was great .
Went for dessert and loved every bit of it!
Everyone working at this restaurant looked miserable. Food was poorly prepared and servers just dropped things on the table. Badicdllt, "here, tske your food." This restaurant needs an overhaul, top to bottom.
Great spot! I love that you can browse the bookstore after your meal. Great spot for daytime or nighttime.
Whilst the food was good it was not outstanding. We went mid morning and there was no fresh juice available and there was a significant amount of shell in the crab omelet.
Been to Kramer’s and afterwards 3 times since new owner from &Pizza bought it...the food and service have digressed each time.
Server approached us ten mins after we were seated to tell us water was on the way. He brought food to table w no silver for us to use..he then glared at me when I pointed it out to him. Toast with brunch was not toasted and was soggy. I asked for manager who did get me a bagel w no cream cheese or butter. Waiter glared at me the whole time....he might be good foe &pizza counter guy but is clueless about table service and his attitude was terrible. Not an apology to be heard from either one. I’ve been a patron of cafe for twenty years...no more
I think I found my happy place. Good food and endless books. Can’t get better than that.
We all enjoyed our meals and ate outside. It was beautiful! Fresh, creative entres, like blackened salmon and hanger steak salad. We enjoyed small crab cakes for our appetizer. Our waiter was great!
Save room for dessert - they have the absolutely best desserts in town.
This place is awesome! I mean, how can a quaint cafe in the back of a local bookstore not be? The food is good and atmosphere is a big draw. The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is due to the fact that they initially forgot to mark down that I attended during my reservation via Open Table and I had to follow up.
Food was really good- I had a crab cake w/avocado and my husband had the fish tacos . Enjoyed a good rose and my husband thought his whiskey & fig cocktail was exceptional! Wanted to eat outside, but it was really hot!
This is a nice place for friends to get together. We happened to be seated quickly but I prefer to make reservations here for just in case. Our server was friendly and efficient. I had the vegetable lasagna and it was wonderful comfort food. My companion had the mushroom risotto and loved it. The check was prepared correctly. We will return.
Loved the casual vibe. Menu had something for everyone but did not overwhelm. My risotto was delicious. Daughter #1 loved the crab cakes and Daughter #2 devoured the quinoa bowl. Prices were fair for DC and portions were generous. Lots of craft beers and some fun cocktails add to the experience. Love how the bookstore is the perfect way to start or end a good meal with family or friends. The outdoor searing is lovely. Inside dining is very small and kind of outdated. 5 Star wonderful neighborhood cafe.
We had a very nice time. The menu had interesting selection and we had time before our reservation to shop for books.
The food itself was good, but our server Cassidy or Cassandra was abysmal. She got my order completely wrong and when pointed out did nothing to remedy or attempt to fix it or apologize. Did not fill my boyfriends coffee or ask once. Did not come to check on us - had to track her down for salt and pepper. Lady next to us had to track her down for her drinks multiple times. This place could have been nice but our experience was totally ruined by her. There are many places with good brunch in DC and I’ll be trying them next time because of the service here
Kramerbooks is great for a coffee or drink, but not for dinner. The service was slow and the food was greasy and not well prepared.
My food was tasty, though very similar to what I could have found at a lower price point many other places. Beyond there being a bookstore attached, the atmosphere was spare and not too appealing.
We had a reservation and were looking forward to eating at the restaurant. We had never been before. We were seated and ignored for about 15 minutes. Very few customers were there as it was early (6pm). Lots of staff wondering around but we were never able to get anyone’s attention. We would up going to another restaurant in the area.
It was amazing! The food was so delicious and the service was amazing! I will definitely be going back during my time in DC.
Excellent food and top service. Dishes are a good size, so we shared a couple.
Crowded, Small Portions, Noisy...Staff Polite and Food Tasty.
The corned beef hash was delicious! Great place to meet and eat with friends, then pick up a new read or two.
I had a fine experience. I was a bit underwhelmed with the food, but not terribly. The staff was super friendly and accommodating to my friend and I who could not figure out how to split our bill. 😉
Chickpea and avocado salad was so good. The grain bowl was disappointing and would not get again.
The seared scallops were wonderful!
