Our mission is to provide pure, plant-powered meals that are good for your body. Our approach is knowledgeable, playful, and engaging. We offer a unique opportunity to experience a different way of eating vegetables and discover new flavours and textures. Talented chefs behind Food For Friends restaurant (established in 1981 as Brighton’s first vegetarian restaurant), Botanique (Hove’s exclusive plant based restaurant) and Wolfox Coffee have put together their experience and knowledge to bring you this new Asian inspired plant based concept.

The result is a creative and colourful menu which shows organic plant-based food can lead to surprising, healthy and mindful new eating experiences. We believe in an upgraded casual dining experience in beautiful light-filled spaces dedicated to natural plant-based food and organic wines.

We were really excited to try Kusaki after seeing all the photos online.
Don’t get me wrong the food looks absolutely stunning. It’s very instagram worthy.
However, the actual Taste of the food was really hit and miss. The edamame beans were probably the best I’ve ever had and the chocolate cherry dessert was out of this world amazing. But that’s where it ended for us.
After telling the staff about some food sensitivities and one allergy they still kept bringing food out that I couldn’t eat. I swear they were trying to kill me (I’m kidding) originally ordered the tofu Dashi and it was served with ginger, which I’d already notified them I was allergic to.
The rest of our food seemed to be a bit all over the place. My aubergine was still a little tough and rubbery. The maki that we ordered either had tonnes of flavour, but we weren’t sure if we liked it, or tasted earthy and off.
The dish sizes were either massive (the tempura was amazing and there was a lot of it) or really small and over priced.
Apart from the tofu dashi which contained two tiny pieces of tofu there is not a lot of protein in any of the dishes so you’re paying very high prices for some vegetables that are a bit hit and miss.
I will give credit to the chef for catering around my intolerances and allergies and cooking me an aubergine fresh however it was still too rubbery and not cooked well enough and the miso sauce didn’t taste of anything (miso nothing)
We also ordered tea and they had to come back over and notify us that the tea actually wasn’t in stock. I’ve spoken to friends since who said that they also felt the food was lacking.
The ambience of the restaurant is amazing though and despite the fact the staff kept messing up they were really apologetic. Over all we spent about £40 each. We were really disappointed as we had high hopes after seeing raving reviews online. I wish we had asked friends first.

Food was very good. The tofu pockets are amazing. Ambience was good Service varied from being a bit over attentive and asked the same questions by different waiters at the beginning to almost non existent towards the end. But all in all a good experience.

This was a great discovery.
We had a couple of small plates and 2 mains and shared everything.
The cocktails and the desserts were amazing too.
This is just the sort of place that w should all encourage! Plant based food at its best.

Our first visit to Kusaki. The ambience was perfect, it was busy but the noise levels were fine and there is plenty of room between tables. The person who served us was friendly and
welcoming and very happy to explain the menu etc. Food was great, our only problem was that one of the mains came with the small plate starters so one of the party had finished theirs before everyone else’s had arrived. Good value and we would definitely go again.

We went with our vegan friend, we are all carnivores but were blown away by the tasty food and beautiful presentation along side fantastic service. We had tempura vegetables (our fav), mushroom gyoza (awesome), bang bang broccoli, sushi, aubergine steak and bao buns. That was the perfect amount for 4 to share. Excellent cocktails and great organic Prosecco. Deserts were delightful cherry chocolate pot, deconstructed cheesecake, lychee tart tatin. I honestly couldn’t chose a favourite. In fact I think they should do a desert plate with a bit of everything on.

Fantastic food, really great presentation and very well executed. Really enjoyed it. Great cocktails but they were slow to come. All waiting staff were lovely. Only one toilet for the whole restaurant meant uncomfortably queuing next to the bar. Confusing background music jumping around in genre and tempo made it feel more like a student party than a restaurant though!

The vibe of the place is fantastic, super cool! Food presentation is amazing. However, it takes a bit long for the food to be served 🥺 Also I wouldn’t recommend to try the cheese cake, the flavour was a bit funny.

We ordered cocktails, wine and food. The cocktails came alongside of dishes 3 and 4 of 7 so we cancelled the wine. We were told all the small plates were for sharing. 3 maybe the magic number but 3 cubes of tofu and 3 fingers of aubergine are not much to share - especially when you have only been given chopsticks to use!! 😆
I would go again if someone else had booked it I was feeling flush but otherwise I shan't return.

We went for the tasting menu that had been advertised when they first opened, to find that they had changed the menu and no longer offered it. However the waiter said he would select many dishes for the table. We had about 10 dishes between four of us. Everything they sent out was brilliant, and it came very quickly. There was barely a grain of rice left, we then had desert which was also great. My Lychee and Pear Tarte Tatinne was the best desert I have had in a long time. We didn't try the sushi, but we will definitely go back to do so!

Lovely restaurant, enjoyed the sushi but the small plates were not great. We had four of them and all disappointing. They were also not small, so if we had enjoyed them we would have been very full! The bang bang tenderstem was barely cooked and covered in very hot chilli sauce but no other taste. The gluten free tempura batter was very hard and difficult to eat and tasteless, the aubergine and tofu plates were just not very inspiring. The best food was the edamame beans roasted in garlic - delicious.

We ate here at lunchtime on a weekday, when we arrived there were only 3 other people in the restaurant. Our order was take quite promptly but unfortunately the service was slow- there was only one waiter working and it soon got busy. We ended up waiting over an hour for our food and when it did arrive the Tatamen dish was very disappointing. There was a lot of stock, some noodles and that was it, no pickled roots and quite salty. We ordered the stir fried noodles that again were far too salty- this was removed from the bill to be fair, but such a shame as it looked delicious. The other 3 dishes: The Bento box was a really good size portion, and the Momoiro and Kiro were full of flavour. I'd like to go back just to see if we had a better experience and other food on the menu sounded delicious. They've made the restaurant look so nice though and the decor was very relaxing and quite authentic.

Such a lovely place to go for a special occasion!! The food is lovely and the service was great! Perhaps slightly small portion sizes for the price but tasted delicious! We had some cocktails too and they were great, but again quite small for the price. Would definitely go again but due to the price it would have to be for a treat.

A real find - food is excellent, clean lines and pretty decor. Service was efficient, probably would be better if the dishes didn't come out all at the same time. Great flavours and as a non-vegetarian if I could eat this way every day I could definitely be a veggie. Wonderful!

A good concept.
The food was tasty and good value.
The service was really great. The staff were very friendly, professional and attentive.
The interior however did not evoke a feeling of being in a Japanese restaurant. I liked the modern approach however we were seated at the ‘bar’
Normally when seated at the bar in a Japanese eatery you can watch food being prepared. However you simply face a wall with the restaurant logo. The gap behind also feels very wide and slightly odd. I also think that the bar would benefit from being high up and sitting on stools to give the place a bit more interest.
As it was the chairs were too low for the bar which makes it awkward to eat.
Other than that it was quite a nice experience and I would probably return.
