Come along to experience an unrivalled and relaxed dining experience – right in the heart of York - at La Vecchia Scuola.
We had a really lovely meal. It was very busy being NYE but the serving staff were great and the food was gorgeous.
Very pleased with our visit to la Vecchia for New Year’s Eve. Good food and hospitality and the pianist made it all that more welcoming and enjoyable. Good value for money too, even with a bottle of champagne and Rosè.
The food and service is excellent. Very friendly staff with quick service. A really lovely place to go on Christmas Eve with the family. We would highly recommend it
Fab. Loved it. Will be back on hubby's birthday. Brilliant service and food was lush
We have been here many times and loved the ambiance and food.
The atmosphere from arrival was unfriendly and unwelcoming.
we were waiting to be greeted and shown to table on arrival ...only 2 other people in.
Staff appeared to be on go slow mode... had to ask for drinks, orders and bill and was let waiting.
We could have walked out without paying ...after asking several times had to go find waiter!
Food not as good...Disappointed this time round 😫
Lovely food and well presented. A busy evening though and very noisy so could hardly hear ourselves talk above the neighbouring tables.
Exceeded all expectations! Those in my party who had not dined there before were blown away by the oasis of calm greenness when entering the conservatory.
We eat here every year when we visit York for our annual Christmas shopping trip. Always a pleasure to do so.
Terrible service. Food good but won’t return . People walking out as they hadn’t been served . Drinks came 45 minutes after we ordered them despite request to be served twice .
We went to vecchia 11 years ago when we stayed in York and had an enjoyable meal so returned with friends. Meal was satisfactory. My meal was not as ordered, I was offered a replacement but declined and staff removed cost from our bill- ok
However when I went to bathroom at end of evening I was absolutely appalled at the state of the facilities. I will not be returning again.
We enjoyed it so much we went back the next night.
Beautiful restaurant food gorgeous service excellent had a wonderful evening
I had booked for 4 in York for Sat 7 Dec at La Vecchia Scuola at 12.30 . Ref 41330
I received 2 confirmation emails from you but when I called the restaurant on Fri 6th they had no booking for me. Luckily they found me a table so lunch was not spoilt. Not impressed, as it was very busy and if we had just turned up on the day, we wouldn't have got a table. How did this happen? Food was very enjoyable as usual.
This is our fourth annual visit and the service and food was, again, excellent
Restaurant set in a fabulous building and set out very well . We was seated in the conservatory part of the restaurant. Drinks order was taken quickly , and waiter was polite and came back giving us enough time to throughly look at menu approx 35 mins !! Ordered one started two mains starter took 45 minutes waiter finally noticed apologising for a broken machine etc , mains were served and it was quite obvious that they had sat a while probably waiting for us to finish starter . Waiter then had the grace and apologised again promising free drinks at the end of meal , nope never came back to table only to serve us the bill which surprisingly was taken very quickly. I somehow expected more from reading all the good reviews perhaps they were having a bad night :(
Had a delicious supper, food was brilliant and prices very reasonable for such quality.
Service was excellent and everyone very kind.
Will certainly be dining there again when we are in beautiful York.
We had a great time; the menu and staff were perfect
We thoroughly enjoyed
This was our first visit & we were generally very pleased. The table location was good & drinks service quick whilst we reviewed the menu. The choice was certainly large enough & we all found something we liked. Starters arrived about 10 minutes after we ordered which is perfect & then about 15 minutes between starter & mains, again absolutely fine. The atmosphere with the pianist was a nice touch, he is a great character & certainly helped to make our evening fun. The music was loud enough to enjoy but not too loud that we couldn't continue our conversation.
The only downside came when we wanted to pay. For reasons unknown the credit card machine would not accept my card. Have to say this was not my card as it worked perfectly the following day. Luckily we had an alternative method of payment, so the moral of the story is take some cash to avoid embarrassment, just in case.
The food here was very nice however as a group of 7 I think they must have made the pizzas first then left them on the side whilst they finished the rest of the meals as my pizza was cold by the time it arrived. Strangely the tomato sauce on the pizza was almost fridge temperature in parts. It tasted nice however. Garlic mushrooms are delicious!
The place is starting to look tired. I’ve been many times over the years and I don’t think any re-decorating has been done. Toilets leave a lot to be desired.. definitely need some tlc.
Overall it was a nice place for lunch but I was disappointed with how things had deteriorated since last time.

We booked an early dinner so the restaurant was very quiet' however the food and service was great and we would definitely go back
Yes but only for the quick service and good value.
We were seated for 25 minutes, before being asked for a drink order. Further 10 minutes for a order. Almost felt as if we were being ignored at one point.
My starter was good, but my partner said that the chutney with her pate had an off taste.
My parter had the seabass main, and described the portion size as a “full school of fish”, and was really off out by the size. She also said the quality wasnt at all nice.
I had the fillet steak and was severely disappointed. Seems to be cooked terribly, although was cooked to my asking. We both left more than half of our meals.
Wouldn’t at all recommend in future
Food was great
Staff were new and under training but trying hard. The manager was excellent in making sure the restaurant ran as smoothly as possible
Pianist taking requests - amazing
One negative - I was near the fire door and it was extremely drafty
All in all very enjoyable x
Waiter surly and generally rude and disinterested. Food average for the price. Noisy and slow service until dessert when we were being pushed along to make choices, eat and leave. No tip given.
Lovely meal and friendly staff , was a birthday celebration. Food came out piping hot and there was great choice
Second visit to this restaurant. First ate there about a couple of years ago when visiting York. The meal we had was delicious and so we decided to book a table ahead of our visit. We were not disappointed. The food was just as we'd remembered.
The staff were really friendly. We had a lovely welcome and the service was faultless. Would definitely go back .
We had the set 3 course dinner menu for 2 £19.95 which was excellent value and the food was to a very high standard. Lovely setting and ok service. Really characterful building with memorable food, forgettable service though would definitely recommend.
I feel we did not have a good table, we were next to noisy guests in the conservatory. I had asked for the best table if possible as it was for my friends 60th birthday. I questioned whether the meal deal was available for the time we booked, no one got back to me & I didn’t see this on the website, but we missed the deal & had to pay full. My main was okay but £12 for a vegetarian pizza dish is a little extreme & dry chocolate brownie for £8 is more extreme. Not sure I’ll be returning any time soon. I’m not one to complain & have enjoyed this restaurant on previous occasions.
Other than the initial issue ( we waited 20 minutes to be spoken to ) everything was fantastic. They could not apologise enough for leaving us waiting.
Food was excellent and it's a lovely restaurant. However, they charged us too much and when we sent the bill back the waiter was rude and tried to blame us for the incorrect bill.
The food and value for money (had the lunchtime set menu) are great. The service is also good and the food was served promptly and the food is very tasty. The place is also very busy.
The things that really really let this place down are the following:
When sat in the conservatory (main dining area) you can see the staff smoking shelter. Staff, including the chefs in all their uniforms smoking outside. The shelter is less than a metre from what I assume is the kitchen door. I found this real off putting. When the waiting staff were coming back into the restaurant they smelt of smoke, as a non-smoker this was an issue
Staff dress - over washed jeans and trainers in a restaurant I don’t feel is acceptable, I think it looks scruffy.
My only other complaint is the toilets. I visited about a month before this review, having not noticed the smoking then I booked again for this visit. One toilet door in the ladies was broken both times.
Fabulous service, setting and food. Can’t wait to go back.
Ignored upon initial entry to restaurant, followed by staff welcoming then leaving us unattended. We were then informed our table was not ready and to go into an anti room without being offered a drink etc. Initial waiter who took the order was lovely, but then following reasonable starters, main course arrived and was very disappointing. We had the pasta, prawn and chirizo dish. My colleague only had 2 prawns in her dish. The sauce was very runny and the chirizo was simply sliced poor quality meat. Upon feedback, my colleague advised that her meal was not satisfactory, and the waiter (not our original waiter) advised the dish was made no differently to my dish so was not able to advise why there was only 2 prawns. He did this in a very disparaging manner. He then went to the kitchen and returned to show the difference between a slice of peparami and chirizo to 'prove a point'. We had not asked him to do this and did not expect this to happen. He did offer to remake the dish, provided 50% discount on the whole meal and did not charge for our colleague. The big let down was how we were made to feel :(.
Excellent food, service was really good.
The inclusion of the piano entertainment added to the experience. A really pleasant evening, enjoyable food at an affordable price.
I love this place and we visit every time we are in York - the piano is a little loud in the evenings and we could barely have a conversation but the good is excellent
Lovely restaurant and friendly staff in nice surroundings and gorgeous food
We enjoyed our visit to this restaurant very much. The place has a good atmosphere and the service was very good. Our food was well presented and very good value for money. We would visit again the next time we are in York.
Friendly, warm welcome.
Incredible steak and a wonderful pasta dish, accompanied by a super Italian Sauvignon.
Faultless, lovely evening in glorious surroundings
Have always chosen this place to eat for a few years now.
