The Good Food Guide (2015) says: "Martin Peacock [...] still doing what he does best: familiar combinations of quality ingredients, conscientiously sourced and cooked with care. A test meal found perfect fresh-from-the-oven bread; a precise, balanced starter of venison carpaccio [...] then the main course of Romney Marsh Lamb [...] that was a triumph of flavour and accuracy of cooking. [...) and the English cheese selection is superb."
Vegetarian: we will always offer at least one starter and one main vegetarian choice.
Food was delicious and nicely presented.
Staff were helpful, friendly and attentive.
Food was served in good time would go back if we are ever in the area again.
We had a delicious meal in this warm and friendly bistro. The service was prompt and the wine list varied and fairly priced. We shall return!
I can't fault any aspect of our meal which befitted the special occasion for which it was booked. Excellent, beautifully presented food with friendly service.
Amazing food reasonably priced.
Nice location, would like a couple of extra choices available (only 5 mains). Would definitely go back as I understand menu is changed on a regular basis and would love to try something different.
The two of us went to celebrate my birthday and experienced great service from arrival through the meal and to departure. Food quality was superb. These two areas well deserve a five star rating.
Seating area a little cramped for me at 6’7” and being in front of the door was a bit draughty until we asked for it to be closed. Bashed my right elbow on the wall pillar due to limited space but these are minor things compared to the overall positive experiences.
Will certainly be back
Delicious and imaginative food served by very friendly staff. We visited at lunch time so it wasn't very busy, thus the overall sound and ambience is difficult to measure. However, we had been before some years ago and thoroughly enjoyed that visit so were delighted that it was Just as good as we remembered it.
This was our first visit to the Landgate Bistro and we were impressed. The food was very good - especially enjoyed the chilled tomato soup and the lamb shank, which was tender and tasty. The amuse-bouche and hot bread at the start and macaroons at the end were nice extra touches. The wine was fine. The service was friendly, polite and efficient and the ambience discreetly agreeable, with intriguing decorative touches. We chose from the set menu, which is excellent value for money. A restaurant to recommend and return to.
This is a very special little Bistro! All the food is freshly cooked to order but there are no outrageous delays and when it arrives it is hot fresh and flavoursome.
Before the meal bread is provided with a lovely marmite infused butter that confuses the norm in that even marmite haters seem to love it.
Wine by the glass is well chosen and good value.
The staff are attentive polite and pleasant.
All in all a very pleasant experience.
Disappointed. Twice I stressed To the waitress that I wanted the lamb WELL DONE. No pink meat.
I did not get this. The meat was very pink. Although the chef may have his own opinion of how lamb should be cooked, either he took no notice of the waitress or the waitress did not pass over my request for how I wanted my lamb cooked. The quantity of food was small and did not equal the price.
I gave my lamb to my husband (who had fish). He said it was pink but tender but preferred
We were sat in a small table practically in the fireplace. Not very romantic.
No we would not go here again. The choice on the menu was sparse.
A lovely find, the staff were super efficient and helpful, food was faultless and presented superbly, highly recommended.
Very good experience. Staff were excellent and the menu choice comprehensive We though the wine list although extensive was just a ‘touch pricey’
We would throughly recommend the Restaurant
We made sure we both had something different for our three courses as we enjoy tasting each others. Every dish was really good and neither of us had food envy!
We were recommended by Jeakes House proprietor and we have given her our very positive feedback for her to give other guests.
Delicious food, beautifully presented - a lovely place for lunch in Rye
Exceptional food and great service.
Best restaurant in Rye.
Also amazing value for the quality
Really good food and service in a lovely small restaurant. 100% recommended.
Everything was incredible about the evening. Fantastic food and fantastic staff!
Food was delicious. Very up market and worth the price.
Lovely food, well presented, just the right amount. Would have liked bread to be warm.
Both had guinea fowl, delicious
Child in restaurant after its bedtime!
Would love to return some day.
This was the second of two visits to the Landgate Bistro during our holiday in Rye. The food was outstanding served by dedicated and attentive staff in a quite calm atmosphere.
Great food as always. The lamb is so delicious. The restaurant is cosy and the dining experience excellent.
I am very deaf so it is very noisy for me but the restaurant is small and I am not sure much could be done to quieten it other than curtains and carpet which are not fashionable.
Best food in Rye - very civilised and untimate setting
The Landgate Bistro is the right place to go if you are looking for well executed dishes, excellent service and a relaxed ambiance. It is ideal for a couple's night out.
The room is small, which means the tables are rather closer than some might wish, but given that the general ambience is quiet - no loud music here, thank heavens - most diners respect that and avoid intruding on their neighbours.
The menu offers interesting dishes, for example scallops with pork belly. which was a new one to me, proved to be excellent. We both chose steamed sole fillets as a main course and they were cooked to perfection, however, neither of us felt the braised little gem was entirely successful. We did not choose a dessert because we wanted an early night.
The wine list is extensive and interesting. Half bottles are available, which we regard as a joy, prefering to take an aperitif before the meal - in this case a shared picolo of prosecco - and then a large glass of wine with our food. Glasses of some wines are offered, but there are not enough, which is also true of the half bottles, but we felt that the bistro was taking a step in the right direction.
The bill came to nearly £80, which felt a shade too much, but, at the same time, we did not feel that we had been taken advantage of and left in a cheerful and satisfied frame of mind.
The service was charming, efficient and engaging: this they are getting just right.
We booked here on the advice of friends and were happy that we had followed their advice; we would certainly visit again.
Local produce cooked to perfection and marmite butter too = very satisfied customers.
Lighting was quite bright by our table, candlelight would be more romantic.
Not enough choice on menus.
Excellent food and service. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and would thoroughly recommend to our friends.
Love coming here, especially the cauliflower with the scallops.
Had a really nice anniversary meal. The portions were not large, but just right for us . Well balanced dishes, beautifully presented. Delicious complementary focaccia bread when we arrived and the valhrona chocolate mousse we had for dessert was outstanding.
We had been to this restaurant before and will definitely be back.
Excellent food and service- definitely recommend.
Highly competent operation all round. All of the food was beautifully prepared and presented. Portions just the right size and flavours superb. A cod croquette amuse bouche was delightful. Thoughtful wine list at very reasonable prices. Will return frequently.
Second visit to Rye after a year’s absence and enjoyed the pleasure of eating again at Landgate Bistro. Lunch was delicious - excellent food, a great selection of wines and deft touches (especially the yummy Focaccia bread to start and the tiny oven-fresh Madelaines with the bill)! Service was outstanding and it was a pleasure to be hosted by exactly the same team from 12 months ago - pleasant, professional and unobtrusive. Truly a great meal - thank you!
Had an amazingly good lunch here. It was made even better by the amuse bouch and fresh focaccia, plus even the tap water had ice! The food was perfect, excellent quality and just the right portion size. Highly recommended!
Superb food, great staff, nice venue. Friendly service with a smile.
We will definitely return.
Fantastic food, service and ambiance. What an amazing experience! Thank you
We enjoyed our evening at Landgate Bistro. Food was beautifully cooked and presented. Staff were lovely, welcoming and very friendly, but having been in the hotel and restaurant trade, we were aware of a few shortcomings, for example leaving dirty plates on the table even when the next course had been served. Maybe a refresher course on waiting at table might help? Otherwise we would highly recommend this little gem.
Recommended by a lot of people, so my partner and I booked in on Wednesday evening. It was not too busy and tables were well spaced. Nice touch with homemade bread and dipping balsamic and little fishcake aperitif. Food was nice, perhaps a little bland, but not outstanding. Service was good but too quick - we were in and out in just over an hour. Had a pleasant evening but my expectations had been raised a little higher.
Hats off to the chef who turned out sublime dishes. That this restaurant has been in Rye for 30 years says it all. The current chef is in residence 20 years. So looking forward to going back. The set menu is the best choice and there's enough variety..Fish, Game and Meat to keep everybody happy.
was looking for a nice quiet romantic meal with good food - was not disappointed. Can thoroughly recommend and would gladly revisit
Imaginative, delicious food, excellent preparation and presentation. Friendly and efficient service. Dining room pleasant but a little hot for comfort.
