Located at the new House of France on the Royal Mile (former Lothian Chambers), we aim to provide you with a friendly and authentic French experience, filled with passion and love in what we are doing.
Open every day from breakfast to dinner, we are there for everyone to feel like in France, in fantastic surroundings!
Excellent food at very reasonable prices. Friendly staff. Recommend the Daube and Moules.
Once we had worked out with the waitress who greeted us what a reservation was, service and food were both excellent. The main Bistrot dining room was very noisy when busy. Is there a quieter inner dining area where we might have a table next time? There will be a next time, for sure.
We. Poked for 0900, which is the opening time and we arrived promptly. There were no other customers at that time and we have our order.
The scrambled eggs appeared not to have been freshly cooked and were maybe from the day before, which was unexpected.
Other items were not at all hot.
The best item was the full breakfast.
We only went here for breakfast as it was convenient for another event
Overall disappointing. Would not recommend
We have had a very good lunch and dinner at Le Bistrot but this time was disappointing. Our waiter was surly and uncommunicative. 2 portions of the Daube were unremarkable and 1 portion of the hachis dry and tasteless. Obviously leftovers from the lunch menu. 1 portion of chicken was very nice . The girl who served our coffees was charming but we felt that since the restaurant was almost empty the staff just wanted us out so they could close up.
Superb Moules Mariniere and fresh fish.Ate lunch prior the " Right in the Eye", Fringe event.
Both were SUPERB.
Great food, amazing service. We got lost finding the place, were late for our reservation and they will treated us with 5-Stars in every way!
Trying to find somewhere to eat on the royal mile during the festival is pretty impossible. I was therefore happy to see you could book a table here. I was also surprised to see that the venue was quieter than usual - ie outwith festival time. I was a little disappointed then that my order was not taken correctly - the waiter could have read back our order to clarify what we wanted. As a result I was glad that I double checked with a different member of staff what food was on order to find that half of our order had not been heard properly. When the full food order was received it was the usual high standard and very enjoyable. I do like this place a lot. Its a little bit of luxury in for lunch. Certainly would recommend it to friends. Its one of very few independents in the area and well worth a visit.
Delicious food and a great venue - highly recommend!
Probably better as a lunch venue but a bit lacking atmosphere for the evening. Food was proper French cooking home/ bistro style rather than fine cuisine. The Beef en daube especially genuine and lovely fresh veg. Charcuterie platter easily serves 2 as a starter. Good location, perfectly adequate but just a bit lacking zing given how much competition there is nearby.
I booked a table for 01-Aug-2019. This was a meal to which we were going before our first ever trip to the Tattoo. Unfortunately nobody had thought to update the relevant web-sites to inform me that the night was a special sea-food night and that this sea-food platter was all that was available. My wife and I glibly turned up to expect the menu that was advertised. If I had eaten the shell fish on that platter I would have been horizontal for a week. We therefore had to leave. So in future you will need to update both the Le Bistrot and the separate booking web-sites to make it abundantly clear of any deviations from the norm. We had been to Le bistro earlier in the year. I wrote a glowing report. The next time we go I'm going to book with trepidation.
A very nice meal in a pleasant decor. Set lunch excellent value for money. I did however find the restaurant extremely noisy with tables very close together.
Great value for money with good French bistro-style food (loved the 'hachis parmentier'), friendly and effective service and not too noisy (in spite of an event next door to our table). The pear tart for dessert let the rest of the food down though: tasteless and not a nice texture. Shame or I would have put five stars for the food. Not the quality that you would expect from a French patisserie linked to the French institute: really needs to improve their desserts.
This is a great place to meet for business or leisure. I have now been a few times for brunch, lunch and dinner and haven't been disappointed yet. Excellent value for money and great ambience.
Shell on prawns served in a heavy cream sauce not very practical - couldn't see the prawn to shell them. Good quality steak but not cooked as ordered.
great food, great service, well worth a visit. I will be back.
Second visit and happy to report the same excellent standard for all three guests for set lunch representing superb value and quality.
Lunch. Good food poor service
Just what you want from a French bistro; full of flavour , French atmosphere and portions a sensible size.
Excellent value for money. Delicious lunch, a bit noisy but would definitely return.
Disappointed that the menu had changed since my last visit
Lovely place. Great food. V nice wine.
Overall very nice experience.
Good food and good value for money service good lovely places to have lunch or dinner .
service was sloooowwww, which was really frustrating for my kids
Had an excellent lunch with old friends
Staff attentive and helpful
Flexible about our various requirements re foods
Plenty of choices in the menu, Moules were reported as excellent as was sea bass
Cheese platter was a good choice with variety and freshness
Only negative was noise level with no soft furnishings to absorb some of the noise
Le Bistrot food is just amazing. It is a cut above the other local eateries. The venue is ideal (for me) on the Royal Mile and even though it is slightly hidden away it is very busy. As a result I would suggest booking is essential. Service can take a little bit longer than ideal for a quick bite at lunchtime. So if you only have an hour you will possibly be pushed. Overall, highly recommended and well worth a visit.
Lovely food as always but the service was really disappointing - had to ask for menus twice, for the bill about 3 times and for the card machine to pay 3 times! Luckily we weren’t in a hurry.
Very pleasant, tasty food and good value.
Good solid Bistro style food. The venue was very quiet with only a few over tables taken so it lacked a bit in atmosphere. Also, bill did not include 30% deduction on food which had been offered on Opentable when booking.
Lovely food, attentive, friendly service, good value
We were assigned a table at a quiet corner in a separate section which was very private. However, the restaurant seemed particularly busy and we waited for ages until the waiter was aware that he had to come and take food order for us. Felt like we've spent at least two hours for our lunch.
Great food as always, love this place
Been there twice now with small group.
Very much enjoyed both occasions.
Staff try very hard to get it right.
Interesting venue in prestigious location. Well worth a visit.
Had a very nice lunch, nice staff and nice atmosphere.
Lovely meal at a very reasonable price. Excellent value for money.
Very pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. The food was really lovely and there was a nice atmosphere. What really set this place apart from the rest though was the service. Our waiter was very attentive with a warm demeanor. Nothing was an issue and he went above and beyond to satisfy our needs. Sad we didn't get his name but in our experience he was the best waiter in Edinburgh!
We had the two course lunch which was very good. Lots of choice and high quality food at a reasonable price. When our bill arrived we had been grossly undercharged, when we pointed this out we were given a complimentary sweet, which was very yummy.
Absolutely fantastic! Food was absolutely phenomenal, I had the chicken breast with asparagus and mashed potatoes. At the end they gave us a complimentary almond croissant which was delicious. Chef came to the table and asked us how we liked the food himself. Would recommend to anyone in Edinburgh trying to go somewhere that is underrated and less crowded.
First time , really enjoyed experience. Building is lovely in side, food excellent , very generous portions
The food is amasing! 2nd time I've been. Gastronomically outstanding. Service is average, however. They are all very nice but a bit slow and disorganised which prevents me from giving 5/5. Also, ambience is a tad noisy and cafe-like. Nothing wrong with that, but the superb food deserves a bit more attention in this area. Nevertheless, I will go back with great enthusiasm as food is one of my best Edinburgh experiences!
Food and service very good.
Only complaint music too loud. Turned down on request for a time the turned up again.
