Set in the heart of Soho, L’Escargot, established in 1927, is London’s oldest and most renowned French restaurant. It has been host to stars of stage and screen including Coco Chanel, Maurice Chevalier, John Geilgud, Ralph Richardson, and was reputedly one of Princess Diana’s favourites.

L'Escargot is now under the ownership of Brian Clivaz and Laurence Isaacson, who between them, have been involved in some of London’s most iconic restaurants and member's clubs. James Tyrrell is now the Head Chef and his dishes celebrate classic french cooking with a modern and healthy twist.

Snails unsurprisingly are the speciality of the house; the dining room pays homage to proper French bourgeois cooking and offers exceptional value. L’Escargot has been voted London’s best French restaurant and has an excellent wine list.

Housed in a Soho town house with plenty of atmosphere, the food was excellent as was the service - friendly and efficient. The four of us had the Chateaubriand at the special offer price of £45 for 2 people. The tenderloin fillet steak was cooked to perfection. A most enjoyable leisurely 3 course lunch.

This french gem was a delight for a Sunday afternoon. As we had booked we were shown to a table in the front and more refined part of the restaurant. Unfortunately, the table was right in front of the fire, which would have been uncomfortable. That said, this restaurant is lovely . The staff are efficient and friendly and the food wonderful. Take time to look around this beautiful building. Will definitely be back .

We found L'Escargot from press reviews, noting Jay Rayner's in particular. None of us had been before. We had a lovely evening: the food was great, the Chateaubriand special offer was particularly appreciated, and the service excellent - professional and friendly. It was a great discovery. We would certainly recommend it and would be keen to return another time.

Beautiful place. Service was just fine. Soup and bisque was bigger portion than I expected. Escargot was fresh and delicious but I feel somehow expensive. Duck confit was nice but the skin was not crisp. Overall satisfied but not cheap

We booked the restaurant as part of our Wedding Anniversary celebrations, largely because we had never been there. I did tick the "Anniversary" box. It was a Saturday lunchtime, and not very busy when we arrived. We were seated in two comfortable armchairs which I think were the only two of the kind in the restaurant, and I wondered whether they were used for special occasions such as ours. The staff were uniformly charming and helpful. We ate from the Special Offer menu, which we thought very good value. The relaxed tone of the place was set by the 20 minutes it took for our pre-prandial cocktails to arrive; there were similar gaps between each course. The meal was excellent. My wife, who is good cook and knows her food, declared that her risotto was probably the best she had ever eaten. I had been disappointed o see that the bread and butter which I ordered to accompany my Lobster Bisque starter was usually chargeable, and I remarked on this to our waitress; a generous amount of crisp bread rolls and butter was delivered, but no charge appeared for bread on the final bill. Our wine was nicely chilled in an ice bucket, but for some reason it was pt over the other side of the room, so we had to ask for a top-up on one occasion when things had become a bit busier. At the end of the meal, a plate arrived with a Happy Anniversary inscription written in chocolate round the edge and two chocolates in the middle. We agreed that we had had a thoroughly nice time, and we look forward to revisiting one day.

We hadn't been to L'Escargot for years and wanted to find a pre-matinee lunch venue. We had the special offer Chateaubriand for 2 which was excellent, cooked perfectly with a nice Bearnaise sauce and a well dressed salad. We had a tart tatin to share which was excellent. The first course took a while to arrive but when we pointed out to our waitress that we were going to the theatre, she was very helpful and the sweet arrived quite quickly. The restaurant hasn't changed very much, which is nice as it has a charm. Would recommend

Excellent restaurant, with great service and atmosphere! Piano was playing in the background which allowed for a nice ambient setting. Food was really good - would recommend the onion soup.

Excellent reputation and well deserved. This was a first visit and it was perfect for a nice lunch - not full so noise level low. Service was excellent and the two course set menu good value. Choice of wine by the glass and reasonable bottle prices too. Overall very enjoyable and will return.

have been to L'escargot many times, food always excellent, ambience old style French with low volume appropriate music and comfy feeling

service this time was overzealous, asking to clear plates away whilst my business partner was still eating

pouring still water into my glass when i had sparkling... lack of attention to detail by the relatively young waiters

being asked "if everything was ok" when we both had a mouthful of food and by three different personnel

nothing that a little more training wont cure and it didnt spoil the lunch, although I was embarrased for my partner who had never been there before

very good meal taken from great value Opentable menu. Deliciously rich classic French cuisine, exactly as expected. Great decor and art. Service very good - including a small plate of chocolates with a candle for my wife's birthday) apart from one waiter spilling water when pouring it (and not appearing to notice) and a small overcharge (about £10) on the bill (items on Opentable menu charged as if ordered a la carte). I'm sure they'd have sorted out the overcharge if I'd challenged it but I didn't have time to check properly as I was in a rush to get to the theatre. Good value in any event. Recommended.

L'Escargot is an oasis of old-school charm and hospitality. Our coats and bags were taken and kept in a cloakroom. The decor seems to have been changed to be more cosy and eveningy. There was a merry fire burning in the fireplace. Soft lighting but you could see your food. The waiter wasn't French, but super-friendly and proactive in helping us to order in the most cost-effective way. A nice sophisticated buzz, but in no way noisy. Good wine list, a couple of the more expensive wines also available by the glass. Very good food, honest and traditional, no fancy stuff. Still my favourite place in London.

Freindly and helpful staff. It's rare to find a dog-friendly restaurant in London, so this is a bonus. The cuisine is indeed authentically French.

On a freezing cold evening in early February and with heavy rain it was wonderful to enter a warm traditional room with fire.
Pre theatre dinner with excellent food and a glass or two of fine wine.
Attentive staff
Perhaps the piped music was a bit annoying. Is it needed? Just the background sound of satisfied diners is sufficient.
