French
Set in the heart of Soho, L’Escargot, established in 1927, is London’s oldest and most renowned French restaurant. It has been host to stars of stage and screen including Coco Chanel, Maurice Chevalier, John Geilgud, Ralph Richardson, and was reputedly one of Princess Diana’s favourites. L'Escargot is now under the ownership of Brian Clivaz and Laurence Isaacson, who between them, have been involved in some of London’s most iconic restaurants and member's clubs. James Tyrrell is now the Head Chef and his dishes celebrate classic french cooking with a modern and healthy twist. Snails unsurprisingly are the speciality of the house; the dining room pays homage to proper French bourgeois cooking and offers exceptional value. L’Escargot has been voted London’s best French restaurant and has an excellent wine list. We are delighted to say that we are dog friendly.

I love the ambience at L’ escargot. It has a beautiful interior and the staff are second to none from when you walk in the site to when you leave. Great wines at good prices, the food is really good, especially the French specialties. I love it here!

This was our first trip to London since lockdown. Our expectations were high and we were so excited. The team at l’escargot were amazing. We were sat at a perfect table, the food was everything and so much more and the service at the top of their game. We will definitely return again and again.

The decor was lovely and the service was fantastic! The food, though, was average for a good restaurant. The food portions were decent-sized but the quality was overpriced by about 30%, I would only come here again if there was a high discount offer - but you cannot beat the service!

I hadn't been to L'Escargot for ages...it is good to know that it hasn't faded with the years. The dining room is elegant and timeless, service was courteous but not overbearing, the food was wonderful (I had wild mushroom risotto), and my chum and I could actually hear our conversation. Someone must have noticed that I had given my friend a birthday present and presented her with a plate of chocolates and cookies with a candle on the side and happy birthday written in chocolate...now that is classy!

This is a really beautiful restaurant. The service is exactly right. But the food is really excellent. The menu is quite limited, but I think that’s probably a good sign rather than a bad one. I would recommend it to anyone.

A beautiful traditional French restaurant, long established in the middle of Soho. In this new world of Covid compliance the wearing of masks and social distancing is well adhered to. The service is excellent and the food sublime but for those who are not acquainted with how the French cook steak - go one further than your usual choice. Medium rare is rare and well done is nowhere near the British understanding of well done..... but they are more than happy to cook it a bit more if you're not happy.

We booked for 4pm when L’Escargot opened... we wanted it to be quiet so we weren’t rushed. It was perfect! We had a leisurely late lunch that was just delicious and not rushed! Wonderful service, absolutely delicious food and sumptuous decor. My friend is Vegan and is never offered much choice... but both her dishes were exceptional - as were mine!
Oh! .... and the bread !! ❤️❤️
Hadn’t been back for years- but will definitely be back very soon

The escargot was unfortunately the disappointment of the meal. The Flambé Ricard, worked well with the snails themselves . However, there was so much Ricard that the jus left from the snails, that one would usually mop up with bread, was highly alcoholic and had to be left.

The presentation of the snails also was not as I recall, it is now a stainless steel dish. Functional but not inviting. I recall a prettier ceramic dish being used in the past.

All finicky I suppose, but when the name on the door is what it is, I'm expecting the best tasting and best presented Escargot in London.

Food and service great as always, but also want to highlight this is a great place to go right now. Tables are well spaced - all the ones we saw were at least two meters from the next, waiters wear masks and enforce if when people are up. They are being responsible which makes for a relaxing experience in these times (as well as being the right thing to do). None of which compromises the ambience, which remains just as charming as ever.

From the first moment staff were genuinely warm and welcoming. Food was absolutely delicious and very good portion sizes too. Unfortunately one of our meals got attacked by a cheeky insect but our waiter James was fantastic and dealt with it promptly and professionally. I would definitely recommend L'escargot for anyone who wants delicious and down to earth French food in a comfortable yet upscale setting. P. S. James you are a legend!

I've been to L'Escargot before, it was a while ago but I had an idea of what to expect. Everything was lovely from the moment we arrived to the moment we left but, and this is no fault of the restaurant, the atmosphere was a little flat but I'm assuming this is down to COVID 19. I really hope this doesn't continue as I'd hate to see this established and mainstay of Soho dissappear.
