Anniversary dinner with my husband and son. It was slightly disconcerting to be the only people there at 7.30 but a few more tables filled up during the evening. The staff were lovely - helped my husband choose a delicious gin and tonic for me. My husband ordered a steak done rare but when it arrived it was well done! The waitress promtly went to the chef and returned to say that another was on its way so he ended up having two for the price of one.
Turned up at 6,15 on a Sunday, exactly the time we had a booking for. As we arrived we were told that the kitchen was closing and that half the menu was missing, including the roasts. We had driven 3hours to get there. Staff could not give a toss and the food we did get was poor.
Change of menu has not brought an improvement. Familiar dishes are competently cooked but not a restaurant now to visit for innovative food which is a pity. Enthusiastic service. Will return as quiet for business lunches but not the cooking.
We were 20 minutes late. The staff canceled our reservation saying that the kitchen was closed ... they just kicked us out! According to the villagers we met, this is a fact of life in this establishment.
Had a very nice meal but I would make a few observations. I had the filo pastry starter with red onions and cheese, I would have liked a lot less onion and more cheese, otherwise very nice. The belly of pork with 3 types of parsnip was ok but the creamed parsnip was so rich, I guess mashed with cream, that I couldnt eat it all. I think maybe you are trying too hard to be special, sometimes less is more.
However, we have booked to come another night so we did enjoy it.
I hope this is constructive and not too critical.
It's nice to go for a meal where you are not rushed. The service and attention to detail is first class. One of our favourite places to eat.
The food was very good but the overall experience was let down by the service. There didn't seem to be anyone obviously in charge. We had to wait a long time for our drinks order to be taken then even longer for the drinks to be served (we heard many other hotel bar guests chasing their orders too). My husband received the wrong main course only to be told what he had originally ordered wasn't available (although he hadn't been told this at the time). We had to ask for everything from salt and pepper to cutlery.
The dining room was very quiet which was surprising for a Saturday evening so there wasn't much ambience.
Lovely building and smart restaurant with white tablecloths and napkins. A great idea as I came several years ago and it was so noisy my husband and I were shouting at each other across the table due to wooden floors, wooden furniture so nothing to dampen the noise. I believe it has changed hands since then and is much better now. Staff were friendly and helpful but service was a quite slow. Food delicious, though it was a set menu with 4 choices for each course which was different from the menu on the website. We weren’t expecting that, so a little disappointed. We did enjoy the good we had, however.
The food and service were excellent , however we were the only people in the restaurant at the time.
Good atmosphere, good gin menu and attentive staff
Love the interior design and the menu for both breakfast and lunch, lovely ambience, my only criticism was that waiting staff weren't very attentive at lunch, we weren't asked if we wanted more drinks and no where to be seen when we wanted the bill. But the food was delicious and would recommend to friends, but allow lots of time!
We stopped for one night outside of London while on a business trip and lucked into the Linden House Hotel and Restaurant. It is everything English in all the best ways, including the fun art on the walls. Service was impeccable and the food was outstanding. Servers were knowledgeable and made perfect suggestions as well. Don't skip the dessert either!!!
This is the second time I have brought my Mum for afternoon tea (late Mother's Day get together).
On both occasions the food has been gorgeous and is freshly made (you must give 24 hours notice).
There is a great selection of sandwiches, cakes and of course the scones with jam and clotted cream! All with bottomless tea.
We even sat at the same table on both occasions.
The staff are so lovely and helpful - they even gave us a doggy bag because we couldn't eat everything!
The rooms are fantastic, we stayed in room 4 and had a lovely big bathroom with roll top bath. The molton brown shower gel etc are very nice.
The breakfast was ok - we've stayed here before in December and it was better then. This time my poached eggs were not runny, there were no croissants or cereals out on display which I felt let it down.
We also had dinner which was delicious, my Steak was cooked really well.
I would stay here again but I feel the breakfast let it down this time.
Food very very good. Unfortunately the staff were very inexperienced although friendly, and feel they should be trained before being put on the floor. There was no sign of anyone overseeing the service. Also an acknowledgement of it being an anniversary would have been nice. Definitely needs more experienced waiting staff, however it did not really distract on how good the food was.
The after dinner coffee was foul. Really strong and very bitter. When I complained, the waitress said "not many people like our decaf". Really - then why not change it? Having said that, after I rejected a second cup, this time of the caffeinated variety, I was not charged for either cup. Food and service were good. I would happily recommend the food and revisit (steering clear of the coffee).
Good food in an upmarket gastro pub way, reasonably priced for the standard. Wine list a little on the pricey side. Helpful and friendly staff. Nice little bar (with free homemade popcorn on the night we went) if you fancy a pre-meal drink.
The Linden House has become a regular lunch place for quiet business meetings and was up to the usual standard although have changed the menu so no more specific lunch menus. Food was excellent and meal was enhanced by the wonderful and attentive service
Went for Sunday lunch with friends. Food was delicious. Service good and overall a thoroughly enjoyable experience for a reasonable price. Will definitely go again soon
Booked for family Sunday lunch.... had a drink in the bar, then chose great roast dinner option, few different options to choose from. Tasted good as ‘home made’. The dessert, waffle with chocolate sauce and cherry ice cream was fab. Will defo go back.
Have visited the restaurant several times and again enjoyed the food and wine. Service was friendly and efficient but the evening was marred by a large birthday party which was very noisy and made conversation very difficult.
Problem could have been made better by shutting the doors .Alternatively warning other diners about this celebration. However will still be returning.
The service here is always great. Delicious cocktails and a nice broad new menu. Highly recommend.
A lovely elegant setting, but was ruined by large groups of birthday party tables who took over the bar and restaurant and were all very loud! The poor other diners were, in my opinion a second thought as the staff rushed back and forth past you in the small dining room catering to them.
A big negative, is being handed the Menu whilst having pre-dinner drinks in the bar! I shouldnt have to think about ordering my food until I'm settled at my dining table, and especially not expected to order before I'm seated!! It all felt very rushed, until I pointed this out to staff and they then relaxed. It definitely was not the nice quiet meal we had intended.
I'm guessing that this was not the norm for Linden house as other reviews are very positive, so we will definitely be back to give it another chance. We may try a week night instead.
The food was lovely, although the Steak was overcooked. Such a shame as the taste was lovely. The selection on the menu was good. The only negative was the cheesecake, which had an inedible base which you could not break into and an unpleasant rubbery texture. This was mentioned, yet still charged for.....
On a whole, the prices were good, and the staff were nice. I believe it would be a completely different experience if they didn't have the added pressures of the birthday parties.
If I was to suggest anything, it would be to keep the double doors closed on the big party area, to allow other diners to enjoy their meals.
The staff was very attentive and the food was tasty... a great combination!
Lovely stay and really enjoyed the evening meal in hotel cocktails were great and good service. Stayed in room 6 bed very comfortable and clean. Had a wonderful over night stay and would return, however just some feedback for the hotel, I found the shower very awkward it was too small and the door opening tiny had to reach in to turn on and managed to burn myself as couldn't reach the cold. Additionally breakfast wasn't even comparable to the meal the night before which was exceptional, the cooked breakfast had cold poached eggs with bread instead of toast, limited choice of cereal and only 1 croissant. Nonetheless that was only issue and definitely would return.
We have dined here before and not been very impressed, but we thought having read the latest reviews that things may have changed. The staff are friendly and not over jealous which is nice. The website menu is totally different to the one given in the restaurant. The fillet steak had been replaced as the chef had decided it was not up to scratch and had been replaced by a somewhat small rib eye full of gristle and tougher than trying to eat rubber. The restaurant was freezing and having felt the radiator behind me confirmed that the heating was not on. All in all things don’t seem to of improved, even with the changes to the chef and other staff members. I can say that we did not have to pay for the steak meal and were offered another choice, but declined.
I arranged this dinner to celebrate our 13th Wedding Anniversary. My first impressions re: the decor and atmosphere were positive. Prior to booking, I'd checked the a la carte menu online but it didn't quite resemble the a la carte menu on the evening in terms of choice. That said, the food was good although I would've liked to have seen more choices on the menu eg lamb, pork, perhaps another type of fish (apart from the cod) etc. Although attentive, the restaurant staff were aware that it was our anniversary so we were a little disappointed that there weren't a few extra touches made to our experience to celebrate the day such as a couple of chocolates with our coffee, an aperitif or a romantic candle on the table. All in all though, there was nothing wrong with the meal and the staff were very polite. On balance, I think we would return.
Linden House is an excellent place for a business lunch as it is quiet and the lunch is wonderful value and quality is really outstanding for the price of the two or three course s
However it is the service that is friendly and efficient
Really super Christmas family meal - lovely menu for adults & children. Good choice of wines, too
Returned to the restaurant again as always delighted to enjoy the food and wine made a great evening by superb service despite the fact that it was extremely busy with large Christmas parties. The food is creative and lovely ingredients. We will be returning in the New Year.
We had a wonderful dinner and breakfast. The chef is extremely talented and uses lovely fresh ingredients. My roast cod was cooked to perfection as was my husbands pork belly. Our breakfast was also perfect. We will definitely return if in the area.
Great service, Good food & Attentive.. Enjoyable evening.
Fantastic food & great vegetarian options - so great that the friend I was having dinner with also chose them!
The service was fabulous - very friendly & efficient & great vibe to the restaurant - will definitely be going again very soon!
Thank you to the staff for a great experience!
Great venue, friendly staff; not pushy. The food is amazing; even the butter for a roll was great. having the owner asking "is everything is ok?" - to the cook coming out to check if the meal was good leaves a sense of 'care' of everything they do & offer.
Cannot wait until we go back.
We have visited on a number of different days and the work that is being done to develop this lovely restaurant into one of high quality is paying dividends. The cooking shows a sensitive hand in blending flavours and ingredients. The wine list has a nice range of affordable different wines . The whole evening is enhanced by friendly service which is helpful and friendly .
Perfect service and food in an stylish atmosphere!
We enjoyed the stay very much. Quite hidden gem!
We had a very enjoyable anniversary meal at Linden House last weekend. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the food was delicious. We will certainly return.
Have now been at Linden House for both lunch and dinner and have been very impressed with the quality of the food / service and wine. This was a birthday and although restaurant was quiet the staff were friendly and attentive and the main course of duck was really outstanding . Wine selection was excellent and we will be returning asap.
Really lovely atmosphere, great service and really nice food. Will be returning again soon. The only down side is not being able to park at the restaurant. We didn’t know this and it took a while to find a space in the public car park. For next time we’d know to leave earlier before our reservation to park.
Returned to Linden House again and as always the food was of the usual consistently high standard. The service is welcoming and pleasant and just makes the experience whether it is a business lunch or social event a very good and rewarding one.
