L'Ortolan Ratings and Reviews
By far the best restaurant we have been to recently, we had the gourmand menu and the food was amazing. Two of our party had the vegetarian menu and the restaurant were also flexible in changing some courses. None of us could fault anything and we will hopefully return...........
A lovely fine dining experience and nice opportunity to try new foods. I had a beautiful hen egg and spinach ravioli with black truffles and other accompaniments, followed by a lovely gnocchi dish with tempura cauliflower. My husband had grouse for his main. They resourced a vegetarian equivalent to parmesan for me. And acknowledged their wine list is a working progress with more clarity for vegetarian and vegan wines. At the start of each course was a full description of everything contained within the dish so we weren't left baffled what we were trying. A very good price for lunch. A lovely light conservatory lounge area prior to being seated for our meal.
Lovely location. Very attentive knowledgable staff. Sommelier was thoughtful. Amazing tasting dishes. If it wasn't for the wine being so expensive it would be great value.
However the ambience was not right. Too bright. The gentleman next to me unfortunately had the bright spot light bouncing off his head. It must have been off putting for his companion. The bar has a cosy feeling. You could sit there for hours. The conservatory area could do with a revamp.
We had previously only been here for evening bookings so was not sure what to expect with their lunch menus. We were pleasantly surprised that there was a 6 course taster menu which was reasonably priced. Food was delicious and service friendly and helpful. Where you need to be careful is with the "optional extras".....a single glass of wine each, coffees to finish and an aperitif and we pretty much doubled the bill. For us it was a special occasion and an afternoon of being spoiled, and worth it, just highlighting so not caught out ;-)
We went to l'Ortolan to celebrate my birthday and it did not disappoint! This was our first visit but the restaurant is famous in the area so it was an easy choice. The food was exquisite - we often dine out but l'Ortolan is definitely at the top of the list for us now. Service was faultless and the atmosphere-very classy. I would highly recommend it!
My sister and decided to go to l'Ortolan for lunch especially as we have heard so many good things about it. We were not dissapointed. We went for the menu du jour and the food was exquisite and the service was excellent. We will definitely be back again to try the tasting menu.
Eating at L'Ortolan is a real experience. Each dish is a work of art, and the table service is excellent. The food is complex and delicious, worthy of the Michelin star. I went for the flight of wines with the food, which was an intense experience. In retrospect, I should have chosen one good glass of wine to accompany my meal, because this would have enabled me to focus on the food more - but this is just because I am not very good with alcohol!
Simply perfect from start to finish. I can honestly say, I could not have imagined better. The attention to detail and the wonderful service, were the icing on the cake to what was a stunning meal. We had a birthday lunch here and a very good value £42 for 3 courses and a glass of champagne. I will certainly be coming back to try the tasting menu!
What an amazing place tucked away down country lanes but very sophisticated. Great feel to the place, excellent wine list and menu options. Catered for my food allergies at very short notice. The food was very well presented and tasty. The local pale ale was excellent as well - I'm particularly keen on supporting local businesses and this was a great choice.
Service was friendly, knowledgable and at a relaxed pace.
All the way through our visit we felt well-attended to without being harassed. Listened to without being patronised.
A very enjoyable evening and experience and have already started recommending to everyone I meet.
My wife and I had a lovely lunch here as a treat after we returned from our summer holiday. The food is always excellent here and we weren't disappointed. We had a nice corner table in the conservatory next to the garden, which made the whole experience a delight.
[Note I took at photo but I can't upload it because I get this message even for a 32Kb Jpeg file: "Uh oh, looks like your photo doesn’t fit! Please upload a PNG, JPG or JPEG that’s at least 512 x 512 pixels, but no larger than 5MB."]
Whenever we have a special event, we choose L'Ortolan whenever possible, in this case our wedding anniversary. As always the food was of a very high standard but probably the most outstanding feature is the high standard of service and the sense we are honoured guests. We are fortunate to have L'Otyolan so close at hand
L'Ortolan is set in a beautiful red brick house in pretty gardens. We were warmly greeted by the doorman, reception and the waiting staff. We had opted for the champagne lunch and the champagne was delicious, as was the French white wine which we chose to complement our fish-oriented lunch. The set menu offered a good choice of three courses and every dish was beautifully presented and delicious with subtle, well-chosen flavours. The sea bream was truly the best dish I have ever tasted and I would say the same about the peanut parfait which was served with black cherries, white chocolate and other delicious accompaniments. All in all, our lunch at L'Ortolan was a huge success and I hope to go back again soon. Our compliments to the chef:)
This is an exquisite restaurant; perfect for anniversaries, birthdays, graduations or other special occasions. It's Michelin Star status is reflected in the price, however is justified. The food was carefully planned and mixed a range of unusual flavours which worked perfectly! We chose to have the Sommelier's wine choices alongside each course and this was the icing on the cake and finished off a gorgeous meal.
My wife and I had a lovely meal at L'Ortolan. We went for the chef's surprise menu which was fabulous. Very pricey but worth is a one-off. We ate some things we hadn't tried before and all was delicious. The wine was also top-notch. The team looked after us really well. I would definitely recommend for a special occasion. Favourite dish was probably the salmon confit.
As always this place doesn't let down. We tend to save for special occasions to here (birthdays in particular). Having always had dinner here I treated a friend to lunch for her birthday. Food was lovely as always and wine incredible. (We tried orange wine for the first time ever - since getting back we have been furiously Googling where we can buy it). Always wonderful here.
