Have been here many times. On this occasion the food was still as good. However the service was just about ok but lacked the finesse I would expect from a michelin * restaurant. Clearly there has been a complete change of staff. The sommelier was not well versed with the wines. At one point a basket of bread was plonked down in front of me in my place setting. Nothing was said by the waiter but found out later it was not ours anyway. So disappointed as this has always been our favourite local fine dining restaurant and until now has never failed to please. Probably won't be going back after all these years.
The food and service was exceptional. Would recommend it to anyone. Thank you for making my partners Birthday so memorable 🥂🥂
Fantastic food every time we have had the pleasure. The service is brilliant too.
For many years this has been one of our “go to” restaurants, but no longer. We arrived at 12.40 to receive a very off-hand greeting for a 13.00 luncheon reservation. Pre-lunch drinks order not taken until 13.20 and table not ready until 13.40. Limited menu selection, even on a la carte, portion sizes small. Disappointing and over priced for what is now on offer. Can’t imagine what will persuade us to return.
A real dining experience. We went for the chef's surprise 10 course meal with added wine and ended up trying things that we would never order. It was genuinely exciting trying new things and everything was incredible. The wines were well explained and we found some new grapes to try again in future. The service was great, really relaxed, very welcoming and always helpful. Will definitely go back (albeit it after a little saving!)
I believe the service normally should be good; however, according to my previous experience, it seems that we were ignored and had to wait for couples of time.
As for the meal, I love everything except the main course fish one. It's too salty that I could taste nothing. But it's decent compared to the price we paid.
To get there, driving is a better option. If you want to take bus from reading town center, buy single ticket instead of all day ticket. It is located in Shinfield no covered in your all day ticket area.
Food was great. Service seemed flakey - different staff for each course / item / drink - all with a different approach - discreet - in your face etc. This is not what I expected from what is listed as one of the top 20 restauarnts in the UK.
The table we sat at had a distant but unfrtunate damp/drains smell - and when we got a whiff of tobacco smoke later in the evening, we wondered if this was because there was some form of air inlet closeby. We were sat in the middle of the building but alongside a strange slatted wooden screen which may have contained some air handling plant.
All in all it was a pleasant evening, but I'd certainly not rank ikt as high as others clearly have.
We ordered the 10 courses chef surprise and were left underwhelmed by the whole experience. The food was good but in my opinion not to a one Michelin star level.
We received a chicken liver parfait on toast and 2 courses after a goose liver parfait (foie gras style but really under seasoned) The trout dish was again good but not great (again seasoning), we only received one meat dish, a medallion of beef the cooking was good but the beef was not of great quality.
The cheese and desserts were both really good but the chocolate parfait (yes another parfait!)not really imaginative. Overall a real shame, both my wife and I were really looking forward to our experience and left disappointed by the quality and level of cookery.
food was okay but two courses my boyfriend couldn’t eat and they forgot the crackling on his pork dish. I’m a vegetarian and my dishes were okay but none of them left me thinking “this is the best thing I’ve ever eaten”. In terms of service, was a bit hit and miss. There was obviously some new people that needed a bit more training. They lost my boyfriends coat so he had to go and find it himself. Overall I don’t feel the level of food and service was good enough for a restaurant of this supposed calibre
1st 2 courses very good but all went wrong with sweet course. First had to wait about 30 minutes without any explanation. Then told there was a problem. But no one asked what we wanted to make best of situation. In end served 2 sweets each that we didn’t really want & which took about an hour . At end no one thanked us or said goodbye. Not acceptable for a Michelin starred restaurant.
Dining was a very pleasant experience with extremely tasty food presented beautifully. The waiters and waitresses were extremely attentive yet unitrusive, describing the food in front of us after setting it down. Will be returning for sure!
Have been here before, but not for a few years, excellent evening with the taster menu, every course was wonderful. Great service and wine list also. Would recommend.
This is our 3rd visit and the experience was just as enjoyable as the previous occasions. Dine here if you want to be adventurous. Dishes are varied in texture and taste, delicate and beautifully presented. We look forward to our next dining experience.
We took two friends for a special birthday lunch and L'Ortolan did not disappoint.
We had the tasting menu and every course was superbly cooked and presented with sensational taste.
Could not fault it.
Tasty food, great wine choice, outstanding service and relaxing environment made our evening. We'll certainly return in the very nearest future.
Excellent food and worth doing the tasting menu, especially when on offer. Expensive, but then it is Michelin 1-star. Service got a bit slow, so takes a long time for a full meal. Marked down on ambience as all the rooms (bar, conservatory, dining areas) were rather cold when we visited in February, so would be more appealing in the summer months.
We have previously had a lovely experience at this restaurant.
Unfortunately, with all the Bugs around at the moment, we had to cancel our romantic meal for two on saturday night.
L'Ortolan does not provide an ability to cancel the booking less than 2 days before, and you cant talk to anyone if you ring the number on a saturday ("Mon - Friday only ") ..
SO, they have decided to charge £80 for the experience.
You have been warned. Only Book if you know you are definitely able to attend. Otherwise they will charge you.
Absolutely fabulous service and fantastic food. Great atmosphere, all staff were very attentive and made the meal even more special. 10 out of 10 dinning experience. We had the 6 course tasting menu and especially enjoyed the venison which was cooked to perfection.
Overall, a very good experience. The food was out of the ordinary compare to traditional restaurant with some excellent flavours and textures. This was our anniversary and we were expected a gesture from the restaurant, dissapointed.. Also, my partner had an upset tummy the next day.
Great meal! Amazing selection of cheese which were all fantastic. Will be revisiting.
Delicious food, great service and excellent value for money as we did the £95 deal for a 6 course tasting menu and glass of fizz for two. A real treat and we will definitely be back
I was still hungry so had to order a second basket of bread. I felt the wine waiter was a little too frequent to ask did I want to order a second bottle of wine. I did ask for 2 glasses of house wine & subsequently discovered they were £28 for the two. When three people eat with one bottle of wine and two extra glasses the bill comes to just under £400 and I still hungry I don’t think I would recommend this to my friends. Nice food but not value for money no.
Delicious food, great service, relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for a special occasion, great value Menu Du Jour. Having now seen the cheese trolley will have to give that a try next time!
Wonderful food and excellent staff, we look forward to returning as soon as we can.
Amazing food very good staff but the interior ( Toilets) 6 out 10 it just not up to rest of the restaurant needs work
Another wonderful meal here. Just the choice of dessert was a slightly dense caramel slice for the tasting meal. But still one of our favourite places and highly recommended.
No problem at all with the food- most dishes very good with one exception -a rather tasteless and simplistic pre-dessert. But what robotic service - we were there for a birthday celebration and would have appreciated more friendly staff to make it a happy occasion. The food was rather dumped in front of us by miserable looking staff, including my wife's birthday slate, without even a 'Happy Birthday' . We've all been waiting staff, its a tough job I know, but I had to try and be pleasant and chatty to earn the tips - the same should apply here. Imposing an unreasonable 12.5% service charge gives the staff no such incentive. But I would recommend for a business lunch - or after a funeral! We'll go elsewhere.
Favourite restaurant and excellent, as always. The place to go for a special night out! Hampshire’s hidden gem!
We simply had an awesome gastronomic experience. The food was outstanding.
The menu changed! The portion was tiny!! Taste pretty average!!! Why Michelin star??? In simple word abs CRAP!!
I was not blown away as he hoped to be it was very nice but that’s all. The ambience in the conservatory is pretty limp no real atmosphere and on a dull day rather dreary. I didn’t like the waitress calling us ‘my dear’ all the time o found that a little personal
Wonderful as always, L’Ortolan exceeds expectations. Delicious food, fantastic service, amazing wine (recommendations from the sommelier are always excellent). A truly special and memorable dining experience. Thank you!
Exceptional service and amazing food. The staff are warm and friendly and extremely knowledgeable
The service was very poor to indifferent. Staff were either absent or over familiar - complimenting a male guest on the colour of their shirt and when one guest indicated they did not want wine served to them the request was challenged with - but don't you want some for a "can chin" - totally bizarre and inappropriate.
Always wanted to go to L'Ortolan and it didn't disappoint. Excellent service with beautifully presented food and very good value from the tasting menu.
Excellent from the Pre lunch Cocktails to the Sweet. The food is presented in a modern and stylish way and offered superb tastes throughout. The waiting staff could not have been more attentive and the ambience most comfortable. Highly recommended and it was a truly wonderful dining experience
This was our 8th visit in the last year always incredible food and excellent service ,just cant understand why they only have 1 Michelin star when compared to others . We look forward to many more superb meals at the L'Ortolan.
I cannot fault this wonderful resterant. The food is divine - we had the 7 course taster menu - and marvelled over every course. The staff are extremely professional and also quite funny which means a really relaxed, but special atmosphere.
Out of this world food but a stuffy atmosphere. A great evening but the staff lacked any character as did the dining area itself. It is a must do restaurant but I wouldn't rush back.
Very nice. Attentive and very helpful and fun staff. Beautiful food with so much art and love put into each bite. Beautiful surroundings
