Second visit to Loyal Tavern, and again - fantastic friendly service, a warm welcome from the host and super friendly server looking after us, thank you! Will be returning!
Superb service. Lovey set up and great ambience. Food was very good and drinks excellent
Great place. Nice staff, good vibes. Wonderful food. Excellent value for central-ish london
Good meal with friends from short but interesting menu. Poor wine choice on offer but good beers. Loved the chicken skin and lamb main course
Its a lovely space, friendly staff and an interesting menu. Starters were underwhelming, but nice. Mains were really really delicious. Dessert was also outstanding.
Booked for Saturday afternoon to come and try the cheese toasties which I had read about online. I checked the website beforehand to make sure there wasn’t a specific menu being offered at that time and there were no restrictions on the website and the menu for the toasties was on there. When we arrived we were given the brunch menu and when we asked about the toasties a lady went and checked with the kitchen and said they would make the toasties that were on the blackboard only but we needed to move to the casual dining area. We moved and then another lady told us they aren’t serving toasties at all and they are only after 6pm. Nowhere on the website did it specify that and also the mixed answers we were getting from different staff members was confusing and put me off eating anything there at all so I left and will not be returning.
Brunch was decent. They catered for my special requirements well which was appreciated.
Met some friends there for dinner. Absolutely loved it. Such great food and amazing service with a Vibey and relaxing atmosphere. Cant wait to go back.
Really lovely for Valentines Day. It's nice and local to us and felt like a great place to go rather than taking the journey into Central London. The food was brilliant and staff where very prompt.
Happy to go again, would recommend for a nice catch up, taking the family or a nice romantic meal.
Really good. First visit since change of ownership. Nice collection of starter dishes and staff very keen on feedback. Recommend.
Lovely place, great food and atmosphere, service a little slow, but friendly nonetheless.
Very good ingredients, great rustic atmosphere, very polite staff.
Very long wait to place order on my last visit. Also, food appeared rushed.
Great food, great cocktails, great service. Would visit again.
Great brunch spot. The staff couldn’t have been more accommodating to myself and baby.
Really wonderful, except the table - clearly was meant for three as it was right next to the stairs, and the waiter had to add a chair from another table. The person in the additional chair was being brushed by all night, and unfortunately there were no other tables.
Plant based menu options need more thought and work but parsnip hummus was fantastic.
Nice ambiance, but over priced for what it is.
the new menu is absolutely delicious! will definetly be back
At last, a Sunday Brunch spot with a tempting number of Brunch options on the menu. Good portions, interesting dishes, attentive service. An all-round satisfying experience, like finding a Brunch gem in Manhattan or LA....but on our doorstep in Bermondsey. Yippee.
We had been wanting to eat here since it opened and booked dinner with friends for last night but left really disappointed. The chicken skins (one of the main reasons we wanted to go here) an item they seem to have as an USP had completely run out when we ordered at 7.30pm. They then forgot one of the starters (didn’t admit it but it arrived 20 minutes after the other three) this was kindly taken off the bill but then we waited almost an hour for our main dishes to come, which was rather cold. Delicious meat and well presented but lukewarm at best. Again our waiter for so apologetic and gave us our second bottle of wine half price. Dessert was delicious. But for £80 a head it was pretty disappointing.
I'm afraid I have to agree with Victoria G below. A party of 4, we ordered the Charcuterie specials and Chicken Skin as a starter to find out that they had both run out. This was very strange seeing as it was only 7pm, and not a good start. So we were limited to the flatbreads, which were fine. The main courses were good, not amazing. I'm hoping it was just an off night at a restaurant I had been looking forward to visiting since it opened.
A really nice relaxed meal, I do understand the rating where this restaurant have.the food is amazing, and the service is excellent too, they have a Portuguese Waitrose called Micaela that really knows what is the best. If you are around the corner and there is a free table do drop by, you will not regret it!
Lovely Evening - staff were nice and pineapple pudding was excellent
Vegetarian breakfast is very good
Went to the Loyal Tavern for Sunday lunch. Food and service was great. But the beer prices? Frankly they are taking the Mickey! £6.25 for a pint of Whitstable Bay? I regularly drink in The Bloomsbury Tavern in Shaftesbury Avenue, WC2 (for readers from out of town, this is in the West End of London). They have the same beer for £4.65. And they are making a profit. I leave you to draw your own conclusions.
Really lovely venue and amazing food. Service was great 😊
Staff are lovely, as is the food and venue! Super cute place to go for brunch but my slight criticisms would be the less than generous portion size of toast (1 slice is definitely not enough for most), and also if you sit near the coffee machine, the repetitive and loud bang each time the barrister empties the coffee portafilter is a tad annoying. Wouldn’t stop me popping past again though.
Used to go here regularly when it was Village East. It had a killer veggie breakfast. I recently went for the first time as Loyal Tavern and was hugely disappointed. It had a handful of occupied tables (never the case when Village East) and the food and service was a real let down. The potatoes were under cooked. The tomatoes had no flavour, they didn't have a hot drinks menu, they didn't provide butter with the toast. I could go on but for a 40gbp brunch with just one tea and coffee I was left feeling disappointed and went home for a bagel!
Amazing food and an extensive cocktails/drinks list. Service was a bit slow but could be because we were sat at the corner right at the back of the restaurant.
I shared the buttermilk pancakes with berry compote, the tamarind, beetroot, dates, orange and toasted seeds, and fennel and green apple sides with a friend, which were delish. My other friends had the Loyal breakfast which they said was awesome. I also had the Masako Martini (sake, lychee liqueur, lemon, rose, mint), it was very refreshing! Definitely a hidden gem in Bermondsey! I wanna come back for their Sunday roast :D
We came to Loyal Tavern following a very good review from Giles Coren, who emphasized the quality of the food and the genuine friendly service. The food indeed was impeccable and tasty. The chicken skins make a wonderful snack with a zingy hot sauce coating. The star of the show was the buttermilk poached cod with white beans and Nduja. Perfectly cooked, this rustic dish was perfect for a winter day, and the fish had an amazing flavor. As for the service, unfortunately it was disappointing. When we arrived the wrong lunch menu was on our table which confused us. Service was clumsy and hesitant, without any intent to connect. Robotic and should be addressed so that the whole experience turns from good to great. We will however want to come back, because of the nice restaurant look, and very solidly cooked food with fantastic value.
Restaurant lacked atmosphere and vibrancy. Menu is dated and heavy - very few (ie only one) vegetarian dishes and no vegan options.
Little on the drinks menu that isn’t alcoholic. No non-alcoholic beers, cocktails etc.
This restaurant feels like it belongs 10 years ago - can’t believe it has just opened. Overall a very disappointing experience, just go to one of the other excellent Bermondsey street restaurants instead.
Great welcome from Simon , rustic decor , relaxed atmosphere . Service very good .
We had the Sunday roast and ingredients were top quality . Unusual vegetables , chocolate brownie and ice cream yummy .
Only slight criticism is small portion of lamb , my beef couid have been slightly warmer and Merlot was very average for £33.
Other than that very pleased and will return .
The food we had was good but they had run out of 3 of the items we wished to order by 7.45 pm including 2 of the 4 starter dishes on offer .
That aside , ambience was good . The place was full and therefore a little noisy but still easy to speak .
Service was fine although staff were clearly very very busy ,
Wine we chose was very nice ( Malbec ) .
Would go again
The atmosphere, staff and food was excellent! The food was a bit slow coming but we weren’t in a rush so didn’t mind. I don’t like the new name ‘Loyal Tavern’ it sounds like a pub name and could put people off coming in.
Good place for a vegetarian brunch. A lot of locals which is nice.
Top choice for a nice dinner with friends or date night. The food was exceptional and reasonably priced. The availability of a cocktail bar upstairs once your meal is over is an added bonus.
Nice simple lunch menu, friendly engaging staff , a nice place for an informal relaxed lunch
Hot-footed it to the Loyal Tavern after reading Giles Coren’s review in the Times. Disappointing Sunday roast lunches for my 3 companions ( the beef looked a bit sad was it really ‘old dairy cow’?) in terms of presentation with small portions of roasties and vegetable but my cod in a bean stew was delicious and the Brownie for pudding absolutely scrummy. One of my companions let down by their pudding : pancakes with bacon (don’t ask) and maple syrup except they forgot the maple syrup! Given the price of the roasts the impact was underwhelming. Our waiter didn’t get the proactive and cheery service memo and was a bit lax although a perfectly nice chap. Great selection of wine by the glass and so glad to see 125 ml advertised as a medium 👍 would go back for brunch and to try the smaller plates but not Sunday roasts as poor value.
Really great food as always. Friendly service throughout!
