Named after the eponymous townhouses that once defined the Kyoto cityscape, Machiya is an all day restaurant and bar serving simple home style cooking alongside unique patisserie inspired by great food halls of Japan.

The ambience is the highlight as it was quiet and comfortable. I ordered agedashi tofu and mushroom don. The tofu was the wrong kind for the dish (firm rather than silken) and the mushroom rice was average. The service was friendly. So a good place to chill but not worth a food specific visit.

Overall is not a bad place to go to have dinner but I feel like is not really authentic. Me and my boyfriend we have been tried lots of Japanese restaurants but this one wasn’t as good as other. The food was tasty, but not really Japanese

Totally disappointed. None of the dishes was up to the standard. The table surface was like a sticky notepad and probably hasn't been cleaned for a long time. No staff came to our table after delivering the food.

The most delicious food ever! I let the waiter know we were in a bit of a rush and he sped up our order- very grateful. 10/10 would recommend, we split 3 starters and 3 donburi between 3 people and couldn’t finish it all- very good portion sizes and good value!

The agedashi dofu was a bastardised version where the tofu didn’t taste like it was fried and as a result wasn’t crispy. The chicken karaage was poorly marinated, greasy yet over cooked. The gyu-don’s beef was tough, dry and lacked the proper flavours that usually comes from the mirin and soy sauce, yet the beef itself was salty. The rice of the gyudon was also sadly swimming in broth. The separately ordered bowl of white was also not properly cooked. The only dish that worked was the matcha millecrepe.

The food wasn't excellent but overall it was tasty, the problem was that I received my dish 10 minutes before my husband so it got a little bit cold, even though we started eating it while waiting for his dish. Many dishes were also not available. Moreover, my husband and I were really offended by the service guy in the end as when we were leaving we kept saying 'goodbye' while he was focusing on the I-pad and replied back in a very unappropriated. We felt very uncomfortable and embarrassed.

As an Asian who has tried a lot of Japanese food, the food served by Machiya is considered really authentic! Highly recommend Gakyu Katsu, but be careful of the gas and the fire alarm 😄😄

I've been here a number of times and the food has been consistently great every time. Prices are reasonable and the homemade lemonade is great. They also have a pretty good selection of alcohol.
