About Makars Gourmet Mash Bar
Our food is inspired by the fine local craft farmers, breweries and distillers that are buzzing with excitement in Scotland. Like these artisan producers, we carefully select combinations of local ingredients to create small batch dishes with bags of rich flavours. These invoke memories of past times and loved ones. Add to this our acutely developed appreciation of wines and spirits from further afield; and the idea was born of opening a place where locals and visitors alike could rendez-vous.
If you've never been to a Mash Bar before, it's not exactly a bar or a restaurant, but a combination of the two with an uniquely warm and friendly atmosphere. Look at our reviews they say it all!

Makars Gourmet Mash Bar Ratings and Reviews
Myself and my boyfriend absolutely love this place, food is locally sourced as well as the beer, the food is fresh and to die for I've had the gammon on both occasions and I cannot fault it!
The service is exceptional we had a blonde girl did not catch the name but she was lovely and helped us with beer recommendations we even got a complimentary beer which was great, service is quick and the overall environment is chilled with candles lit on each table, Scottish quotes on the walls and a vault door downstairs adds to the old Edinburgh feel and location.
Great service all round thanks again guys and well done on the outstanding food and service we shall be back guaranteed.
My husband and I ate here whilst staying the night in Edinburgh and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this restaurant, the food, drinks, service, music and the food.
I felt the chicken on my dish was a little small but after the three courses I felt comfortably full
Can’t fault the restaurant, from staff, surroundings to the all important food. Haggis and black pudding mash was superb. Finishing with sticky toffee pudding (and a wee dram) was great end to the meal. John was so understanding, patient and accommodating, allowing us to change our reservation - twice😳 as our friends from Canada were initially late then unable to make dinner at all. Glad my wife and I chose to keep our booking and experience Makars. Will definitely return.
Absolutely amazing, having never been before I had visited based on online reviews. The staff were friendly, professional and helpful, the wine great and the food was second to none. All of our group who have never eaten here before are looking forward to our next visit.
We stopped into this small restaurant because it was convenient, but we left absolutely loving our meal. It's prettier inside than you would think from looking in the windows. The servers are knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. Most of all, the food is delicious. Had the best lamb shank I ever tasted.
What an EXCELLENT restaurant! Incredible food at incredible prices. Would've happily paid more although I'm a very poor student! Perhaps one of the best places for food I've ever been to. Excellent service. The smiles on the faces of the busy staff are warmly received particularly when you look at the work load they are under with such a popular place. Although it was packed when we visited, we didn't wait long for our food. Great decor, brilliant drinks and absolutely heavenly deserts. Ice and Dirty is definately recommended!!
what a fun meal we had here on a wet Edinburgh evening. There was a very warm welcome and the various likes dislikes and allergies from our group members were all catered for with good humour. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and down to earth presentation so much so that we were almost the last to leave . The food was excellent, all served piping hot with the tastiest mash potato ever. We were even converted to the joys of haggis. The menu is big enough to cater for a range of tastes and likes and the portions are generous. What is not to like
Excellent restaurant close to Royal Mile and city centre. Great interior, friendly staff that knew the menu very well. The food was fantastic, the haggis is a must try, we shared the haggis starter between us then wished we had both gone one each. Good choice of mains again beautifully presented and really tasty. Excellent value for money. Definatly going back next time we are in Edinburgh.
Place packed as you would expect for a Saturday night
This did not cause and delay with the service
Staff very friendly and attentive
Waiter assisted with choice of local beer
Served a small portion on request which is ideal for smaller appetites
Had the haggis as we were visiting Scotland
When in Rome and all that
Would definitely recommend and return in the future.
You know what you're going to get when you go. Some sort of meat and some variation on mash. The only tricky part of eating here is what to get. They all look great. We had duck in an orange sauce and ox cheeks in a rich French sort of sauce. Both falling off the bone tender (yeah, no bone on the cheeks but if there were one...!). Both outstanding. Had plain mash and black pudding mash. Both excellent (black pudding really, really good version-highly recommend it). Given the low price in an already low price city, this is a must meal. Service wonderful. Very casual-folks there with young kids kind of place. An unexpected treat of a meal
