Enjoyed a good meal with great service and warm atmosphere. The previous reviews guided us and we appreciated the positive steer.
Loved the meal we had at Makers Gourmet Mash Bar...had the best potato skins ever follow by fantastic haggis and black pudding mash....this is proper food, well made. Highly recommended.
This is my first time at Makarska and I was totally impressed. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. The staff were excellent and certainly gave me the confidence that quality and excellent service is the norm.
Great food, great service, excellent comfort food.
We truly enjoyed our meal at makars. The staff was attentive and the food was great. Our first taste of traditional Scottish fare was a success!
We found the food, beer and ambience very pleasant and comfortable. It's in a great central location and I would happily recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh. the haggis, neeps and tatties were stylishly done and there was a good range of craft beers.
Good place to eat lovely meal haggis was very good best to book on weekends or holidays to avoid disappointment. We went Easter Saturday and had been very busy so they had run out of some meals but worth a visit.
Overall good experience. Great inexpensive comfort food in friendly atmosphere.
We really enjoyed our evening at Makars Gourmet mash bar - we were a bit uncertain about trying the haggis and were assured by the staff that it was really good. We weren’t disappointed- it was delicious, even the vegetarian among us was happy with the veggie version. Sophie and Daniel were particularly helpful and we’d definitely make our way there again next time we’re in Edinburgh!
Had a super meal on Tuesday. It's a busy wee spot so be sure to book before you go. Staff are very friendly and attentive. My husband was very taken with choice of beers on draught so that in itself would be reason to return! I had booked because we were staying very close by and reviews were very favourable. It far surpassed my expectations.
There is a great range of main courses and then similarly fab choice of mashes to accompany not to mention the sauces!!! I had the chicken with mustard sauce and bacon with spring onion mash yummmm my husband had the lamb shank with black pudding mash and judging by our scraped plates was very acceptable!!! We even managed banoffi pudding and a chocolate brownie not sure how and some coffees. Managed to take short cut down some steep steps back to our hotel. Great night and we would definitely come back. Thank you :))
Very good food, excellent Haggis, probably the best in town for a reasonnable price. Staff is efficient and very kind. The atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely and we had a wonderful time...it was closed en sunday evening, otherwise,we would have come back!
Great food, great service, nice location!
Second visit, this time with friends for dinner. Absolutely stunning food, great service and fabulous value! Staff were great and will be bringing more friends and family to try more of the wonderful menu!
I've been to Makars a few times since moving to Edinburgh, and always take friends and family when they come to visit because the food is always great, service is friendly, and there's always something for everyone on the menu - including vegans. (It doesn't currently say what main options can be made vegan, but if you call or email them they will let you know.) The location is ideal after a day exploring the city; window spots are great if you fancy doing a bit of people watching or admiring the view, and in the summer they have a handful of outside tables. Definitely recommend booking because it's been busy every time I've been.
Booked as a party to celebrate my partner's birthday (she loves mashed potato!). The food was fantastic, the service was too. Totally recommended.
Great find on trip advisor, fantastic food in a most relaxing atmosphere. Friendly informative staff especially Sophie, look forward to returning soon,
I chose this restaurant after reading very positive reviews. I was not disappointed. We had a 2pm Sunday lunch reservation and the restaurant was full. We had tried previously to get an evening appointment but it was always fully booked. A good sign I thought. Food was really good, and service very friendly (especially Annie). I would definitely recommend and would love to return to try other items on the menu. I had the Ox Cheek - yummy!
Great location, friendly stafff, great food. My only issue was the food was just warm, but did not takeaway from taste.
Great food and yummy whisky as always! I always bring visitors here to try delicious Scottish food - the veggie haggis here is incredible
Great find. If you like mashed spuds, this is the place to go. Choose your main and then choose which mash to have with it. Really simple but the food was absolutely excellent made with local produce. A first class experience and would highly recommend it to anyone
Great food, great ambiance. Staff so friendly and never felt rushed. Recommend booking in advance as very busy even on a Tuesday evening. Loved everything about it, will definitely be going back when we return to Edinburgh.
Food was good ,staff very friendly and accommodating nothing was too much trouble, no pressure to leave despite getting quite busy, happy for us to sit and drink and chat. If you want good Scottish food would recommend a visit here.
great place for casual great food. it's all about the mash but the main meals are amazing and tasty and great value.
It was wonderful experience. Tasty food, friendly personnel and beautiful view from the window. What else is necessary for comfort for the traveler in the first day in the new place? Thanks for fine evening
Lovely meal in a nice relaxed setting and great serrvice
Food was really good but the black pudding was a bit of a disappointment. Would definitely visit again.
The whole experience was smashing and perfect for Alisons birthday
Fabulous place! The food was so fresh and tasty with no added ‘crap’. Great choice of dishes and my first taste of Haggis didn’t disappoint. Lovely relaxed atmosphere and the service was fantastic too- they clearly know their menu inside out. Will definitely return if we’re ever in Edinburgh again!
It was great experience completely from food to service. Two things could be improved, portion size as I left not feeling full and secondly we booked a week before and the time we wanted was fully booked but when we got there it was empty so maybe increase the number of tables you can book online
Very busy so glad we made a reservation. People being turned away so clearly a very popular venue. Consequently very busy and the staff were under resourced. Not a problem but the drinks arrived during the food. Minor point and no reflection of the staff who were very polite, friendly and accommodating. The late drinks were then made complimentary without a seconds hesitation.
Food was very good and the atmostpher relaxing and fun.
Great value and would recommend / eat here without hesitation.

Lovely evening. Fantastic food, service slightly slow but it meant we could enjoy the food. Tables are quite close together but didn’t affect us.
Such a fantastic place! The food is just as described but even more delicious in real life. We will definitely come back!!
Out for a pre theatre meal, food and service excellent, something a bit different
Makars is the go-to place in Edinburgh for hearty comfort food. We had the lamb shank with cheesy mash and the chicken with herby mash. Both absolutely delicious. Great warming food for a cold Edinburgh evening. The views over Princes Street Gardens and the Scott Monument are breath-taking. Staff are efficient, friendly but not annoying.
We had a very nice meal and the portions were very good indeed. Excellent position for going on to eg The Festival Theatre.
Lovely restaurant, the food was very good and that mash was top draw. Selection of craft beers was very good and above expectation, I had a delicious Scottish lager and my partner had a merlot which surpassed expectations. The black pudding mash is a revelation as well as the wild boar sausage which were just unreal. Our waitress, Sophie, was superb all evening, service was exceptional and we both felt very well looked after. Would definitely recommend and will be back on our next visit.
Excellent experience, food great, hot and tasty. Friendly staff and great wine.
Food was delicious, staff were lovely, and I love the vibe. Only thing that was not so good was I asked for the salsa on the potato skins to be on the side (I can't stand spice) and was told that's how it's served anyway. The salsa was actually served on top but it turned out to be quite yummy. The rest of my meal was fantastic though!
Lovely service, good choice of food, unique and interesting. The dessert menu seemed a bit lacking, there was nothing that I really wanted (the fact the brownie is called "Gluten Free Chocolate Brownie actually put us off which was weird but that's how it was). Also the menu was really hard to read because most of the descriptions were half rubbed off...
The price was good because the quality of food is very very good. The beer is also very good. I would deffo recommend. Our great servers were called Sophie and Macha.
Such good value for money would definitely go back, nice food and a lovely setting
