Makars Gourmet Mash Bar (Mound)
If you've never been to a Mash Bar before, it's not exactly a bar or a restaurant, but a combination of the two with an uniquely warm and friendly atmosphere. Look at our reviews they say it all!
Friday - Saturday: 12:00 - 22:30
Sunday: 12:00 - 16:00
Met up with some good friends that I hadn’t seen in a while. Hoped that the food would be good and was not disappointed. The four of us all really enjoyed the food and the service was great. I had lamb shank whilst my friends had beef, veggie sausage and one of the stacks which looked very nice indeed. Will try that next time.
Dessert was great as well - the panacotta was beautiful. Not sure that’s the way to spell it but I knew how to eat it. Fantastic.
Great hearty food excellent service delivered by Greta and just a really great atmosphere - nice to see everyone so relaxed and beef skirt and mash to die for.
Food and service fantastic. Only minor thing (which didn’t spoil our dining experience) was that one of my friends was disappointed that there wasn’t an “ordinary” lager available, as she doesn’t like the flavour of Stewart’s craft lager.
A fun and authentic experience. Great food, fun location and good value.
The food was fantastic. Real authentic Scottish food. We went for lunch on a Saturday and I’m glad we booked, it was very busy. Service was excellent!
Great staff, perfect food. Big portion!Great staff, perfect food. Big portion!
Everyting was so good and tasty .Very good feeling in the restaurant and the service were excellent .
Food was great! I’d recommend that you eat here if you’re visiting Edinburgh.
Good selection of gluten free options, staff very friendly and food is great, good location and relaxed atmosphere
I so wish there was one closer to home, we’d be there every month at least. The food is wholesome, delicious and gives you the lovely warm cosy feeling. Service is fantastic.
Second time we've been to Makars, but first time to their restaurant on the Mound. It's a bit squashed in, but that also gives it a great vibe. Food was delicious, service impeccable (thanks Arthur!), and just a really lovely night out.
Fantastic food and great service. Decent bar selection.
The food was ok, but not as fabulous as I'd been led to expect. I chose the duck, which was quite tasty but certainly not falling off the bone, as it should have been. The service was fine & the location is good.
Booked table wasn’t ready - no biggie but never impressed when other customers are held responsible / criticised for this type of scenario (‘the people at your table are slow - in fact they have been slow to do everything’?!). Heard of setting a time limit? Husband enjoyed his ox check - my chicken was somwhat burnt as opposed to charred, and my sister-in-law’s duck was very burnt - as was her rosti cake. Skins ok - although appeared old / hard. Mash good - as was wine quality / price - and burnt main removed from bill. Very much a tourist place - wouldn’t return when there are so many other / superior eateries in the area.
Very contemporary eating, relaxed vibe with friendly staff al though could do with more than two waiters/waitresses to manage a full restaurant at lunch. Deserts were not as good value as the mains and starters though😀
A fabulous find which lived up to all its very good reviews. Worth the trip to Edinburgh on its own !
The reservation is meaningless, was many tables free.
Staff no so caring to customers.
The way to the toilet was littered with beer barrels.
Loved the many choices of mash. Service was very friendly and responsive.
Great spot for Scottish comfort food. Well prepared eats with fast friendly service.
Ox cheek is so soft it melts on your tongue. Haggis is very juice, comes in a multilayered texture with the mash.
The waiter is very patient when asked to explain the menu and give recommendations.
My wife and I wanted our first night in Edinburgh to be at a traditional Scottish place - but not TOO traditional. This fit the bill perfectly. I had my first haggis ever as an appetizer and it was good! I decided I was all-in so I ordered the recommended ox cheek, which was even better. It transported me back to my childhood, reminding me of my late aunt's crazy good roast beef. The entrees are all served with one of eight different mashed potato dishes and our server smartly recommended the cheddar/chive mix with this meal. The servers were helpful all around and in retrospect this was the best service we had while visiting the U.K. - attentive without being intrusive and happy to offer suggestions.
Loved everything!! 3 adults and 3 kids from the USA and we all found something we loved.
Excellent!! Where the mash is a smash and the haggis is wholesome. The puddings are perfect too!! These guys have put in a lot of hard work and thought to create such a wonderful eaterie. Well done indeed!
A nice welcome , food very good, the service was excellent , I will go back again soon , but not until the festival is over.
Amazing food and even better service!
This was a recommended restaurant on Trip Advisor and was packed when we arrived for dinner on Monday. We were promptly greeted and seated. Service was good and so was the food. I enjoyed the lamb shank and the bottle of Primotivo was good/reasonably priced. Located in Old Town near High Street. Would return.
What a great spot... Comfort food at its best . Service over the top by the entire staff but special kudos to Anna.
We booked this for a pre theatre dinner (Assembley theatre on the mound) and the location was perfect. The service was quick and helpful. The food is definitely based around potatoes, with potato skins starters, rosti casual dishes and a whole menu of mashes to go with the mains! Everything we had was delicious and we would certainly go back.
Really friendly staff - appreciated Arthur's expert advice on wine - great recommendation. Food was lovely too, will definitely be back
Great place for a taste of Scotland. Quick and friendly service and delicious food.
We had a lovely time there and staff very attentive
Great sausages and rosti! All tasted great, just what we needed for a long afternoon of walking!
Love everything, really recommend
A good and interesting selection of food. The waiting staff were friendly but forgot about us a few times.
My husband is Coeliac, so having Gf marked next to the meals on the Menu was a great bonus. The food was very tasty indeed. I had read reviews before going and was not disappointed. Only down side was the state of the disabled toilet. Not easy to lock the door, and needed a good overall clean. There was also a very dirty folding chair in there!! Best remove this or clean it!!!
A relaxed place to eat - casual dining. Great buzz. Nice to have a choice of different sorts of mashed potato instead of chips. The seasonal vegetables were a small pot of grated carrot and apple(?) which was a little disappointing. Went well with my gammon, but not so good with my partner's ox cheeks. Attentive service.
Food was really good, the sauce that comes with a lot of the dishes is delicious and the skins are more like slices of potato which makes it a really easy dish to share for a starter.
A great little dining spot with friendly service and excellent food. Great if you are new to haggis. It was amazingly good! Lovely experience!
Very enjoyable early dinner before heading to a concert. Food and service both really good and value for money
Potato skins to start were ‘soggy ‘ with brown patches. Main wasn’t very hot - not cold enough to mention but nevertheless on the cool side and ‘classic’ mash was extremely disappointing. Didn’t stay for dessert. Service was nice but waitress a little over the top and we had a very loud table next to us. Overall, we didn’t enjoy the experience and wouldn’t go back.
