About Makars Gourmet Mash Bar
Our food is inspired by the fine local craft farmers, breweries and distillers that are buzzing with excitement in Scotland. Like these artisan producers, we carefully select combinations of local ingredients to create small batch dishes with bags of rich flavours. These invoke memories of past times and loved ones. Add to this our acutely developed appreciation of wines and spirits from further afield; and the idea was born of opening a place where locals and visitors alike could rendez-vous.
If you've never been to a Mash Bar before, it's not exactly a bar or a restaurant, but a combination of the two with an uniquely warm and friendly atmosphere. Look at our reviews they say it all!

Makars Gourmet Mash Bar Ratings and Reviews
Our adult family of five dined here on New Year's Eve prior to the Hogmanay celebration. It was delicious. The ingredients were of excellent quality and all of the dishes we had were wonderfully prepared. Greta, our server, was friendly and knowledgable. This exceeded our expectations. The ox cheek was particularly delicious and tender.
The setting was during the parade. The restaurant is a cozy, modern no nonsense restaurant with motivated friendly staff. If you expect Michelin stars, don’t go here. They serve real peoples food all fresh made and very good in taste. It is like grandma is cooking again, but then in a modern environment. I would certainly recommend this to any visitor of Edinburgh.
It's a culinary hug.
It's your granny's cooking without the odd lime jello mould or awkward questions about your dating life.
I'd marry the ox cheek if I could. (Instead, my reception here, seriously.)
Say "I Do" to the banoffee cake.
If you like being unhappy, go elsewhere.
We fell upon Makars Gourmet Mash bar last Friday 15th December whilst walking past towards the Royal Mile on the lookout for a lunch spot. The word MASH caught our eyes so we crossed over and perused the menu. As soon as we spotted rostis we remembered our trip to Switzerland and how much we loved rosti so popped in to ask for a table.
Service was fantastic, unfortunately I didn't catch any of their names as I know if you do and review and name the member of staff they get £5. They were all great!
We all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch, 3 of us chose the rosti stack and 1 had the sausage and mash.
My partner and I loved it so much we ended up booking a table for dinner on our last day and this time we saved room for dessert. I tried the veggie haggis, neeps and tatties taster with a rosti on the side then we both had sticky toffee pudding :) 11/10.
Please come to Aberdeen!
Ps We'll be back.
Welcoming, cosy restaurant. All staff friendly & Sophie looked after us. Comfort food menu with a good choice. Limited but good quality wine list, recommend the Malbec.
I will definitely return.
Lovely heated outdoor area with stunning views of Princes Street Gardens.
If booking a table in cold weather request table away from the door
We had the flavoursome bean soup to start then I opted for the lamb which was fall off the bone melt in the mouth delightful comfort food, i’m a huge fan of mash and I was not disappointed with the simple buttery option. Desert was gluten free brownie to top off my fabulous 3 course comfort food meal that didn’t break the bank
Myself and my boyfriend absolutely love this place, food is locally sourced as well as the beer, the food is fresh and to die for I've had the gammon on both occasions and I cannot fault it!
The service is exceptional we had a blonde girl did not catch the name but she was lovely and helped us with beer recommendations we even got a complimentary beer which was great, service is quick and the overall environment is chilled with candles lit on each table, Scottish quotes on the walls and a vault door downstairs adds to the old Edinburgh feel and location.
Great service all round thanks again guys and well done on the outstanding food and service we shall be back guaranteed.
My husband and I ate here whilst staying the night in Edinburgh and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this restaurant, the food, drinks, service, music and the food.
I felt the chicken on my dish was a little small but after the three courses I felt comfortably full
Can’t fault the restaurant, from staff, surroundings to the all important food. Haggis and black pudding mash was superb. Finishing with sticky toffee pudding (and a wee dram) was great end to the meal. John was so understanding, patient and accommodating, allowing us to change our reservation - twice😳 as our friends from Canada were initially late then unable to make dinner at all. Glad my wife and I chose to keep our booking and experience Makars. Will definitely return.
Absolutely amazing, having never been before I had visited based on online reviews. The staff were friendly, professional and helpful, the wine great and the food was second to none. All of our group who have never eaten here before are looking forward to our next visit.
