Makars Gourmet Mash Bar (Mound)
If you've never been to a Mash Bar before, it's not exactly a bar or a restaurant, but a combination of the two with an uniquely warm and friendly atmosphere. Look at our reviews they say it all!
Fabulous food, great service in a buzzy atmosphere, I can highly recommend, we will return
We’ve been to Edinburgh twice in the last 12 months and both times we went to Makars. Do I need to say more?
Great service, great waitresses Callie and Kirstie served us and were so friendly and great the whole time. Will definitely go back again
Good location, really yummy food, generous portions. I unfortunately couldn't fit in pudding :(
Friendly staff in a grumpy Scottish way
Modern but Scottish Food in a Trendy Place.
Really near both the Old and "Modern" Town.
Very friendly service.
A must Stop Place near the Castle.
(there is a shortcut, don't miss the stairs)
Great food, great service, good value for money, well worth a visit
Food delicious, service excellent, couldn’t ask for more.
Canteen style experience, were given bench seats and table, ok but not good for comfort. Noisy as lots of people in small space. Staff friendly enough, but very busy. Very much designed for fast turnover, which surprised me as a little pricy. Having said all that, food was tasty, portions fair size.
My party was slightly early on arriving makars had our table ready and was able to seat us directly giving us more time to go over menu and order drinks. Their was an extensive choice and we ordered a variety of food. One of my party ordered a dish that contained an ingredient that she couldn’t eat as she did Not read the menu properly, however this was easily amended as it was no problem to order an alternative. The staff were more interested that we all enjoyed our dining experience and could not have been more helpful. Food amazing as always.
The food is delicious and the waitress are so nice. I will come again.
Mixed age clientele (we are 70) leaning towards younger, and all a very nice crowd. North Bank St is a continuation of The Mound, so if you are visiting The Scottish National Gallery or are in that area of Princes Street, you just carry on up the hill for a few mins and there it is on your right. Busy, bustling yet not overpoweringly so, with friendly staff who were helpful and smiling. We both chose the scotch egg and rosti with coleslaw and leaves, which was very fresh and good. The service was excellent. Thank you, Emily.
Amazing food and service, our waiter was great, very friendly and knowledgeable
Very busy little restaurant, so glad we found this place and will be worth a visit back to Edinburgh just to come back !
Delightful, really enjoyed a hearty lunch in a popular restaurant with commanding views, hope to return
Great food great staff lovely place to eat !!
Food delicious and so fresh. Staff were lovely and very attentive. Will definitely return and would recommend.
Great little place.
Food was delicious. Service was spot on.
Tables were a little close together so we were almost forced to engage in conversation with people next to us, but if you don’t mind this sort of ambience, then it’s a good spot for some meaty goodness and delicious mash!
Had an amazing lunch when we met some friends for a catch up. The food was really really great but also Adam was a wonderful host who engaged with us but mainly left us to chatter !! Definitely be back and recommend to everyone.
I liked very much the relaxed, bistro buzz about the place. We all particularly enjoyed the very Scottish (but a little bit different) menu.
Mash to die for!!
Fabulous food & service - loved it & will be back. Only one comment from family & friends - need more cushions on the wooden benches!!
Birthday celebration. Wanted to go last year during our trip to Edinburgh but was fully booked. So made sure to book well in advance this time, had a lovely seat in the window. Food was smashing and staff were all lovely.
Great food and ambience with excellent service, Will definitely be back!
Very welcome reception. Food was delicious and some unique dishes. Well presented. Lovely ambiance.
Good comfort food. Service for drinks was slow. Staff were friendly. No kids menu but they do smaller portions, no chips to the disappointment of the kids but they still enjoyed the meal.
We had this place recommended & it didn’t disappoint. Well worth the 3 hour train journey. Just what we needed on a cold winters evening!
Haggis was absolutely fantastic, great with black pudding mash, wild boar sausages and mash extremely tasty.ngreat value for money excellent service
Saw their award on trip advisor and had try it as it had some of my favourite dishes on menu.
Took my grandson who really enjoyed it too, so much so we went back, the next day!
The favourite was lamb shanks with chocolate brownie as the dessert.
Delicious, I’d definitely recommend it. Shame they have stopped doing the potato skins but apart from that it was brilliant. Third time we’ve been whilst in Edinburgh. Looking forward to the next visit.
Best haggis in Edinburgh by a mile! Actually does a proper whiskey sauce instead of the packet gravy other places do. Lovely service and great location, will most definitely be returning!
We had a lovely meal at Makars Gourmet Mash. The service was very friendly and helpful and the food was spot on! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this restaurant! Thank you 😊
Makars serves traditional foods with great, tasty twists. I had a delicious lamb shank with spectacular tomato/mint sauce on top of mashed potatoes and black pudding. My husband had Bonnie Prince Charlie Grilled Chicken with whiskey peppercorn sauce on mashed potatoes with bacon and onion. The service was very personal
After reading amazing reviews on trip advisor we tried here on Saturday 9th November and we were not disappointed. Lovely atmosphere, friendly and efficient service and the food was divine. The spicy carroty soup starter was amazing and the mash and sausages on the main were tasty , definitely home comfort food and portion size was generous. Would Definitely recommend and would definitely return
The food was amazing, the staff were super friendly it was the highlight of our trip to Edinburgh!
What a great lunch! We booked a table in advance which was just as well because it was packed!! Friendly welcoming staff and delicious food, warming food. Lovely atmosphere.
booked because of trip advisor and can highly recommend tasty menu and well made
It was the perfect day for bangers and mash and the restaurant did night let us dine with some great choices of sausages and types of mash. The sausages were huge and very tasty, great gravy
First time in Edinburgh and stopped here once we arrived. Made a reservation beforehand after seeing incredible reviews - it did not disappoint! Went on a weekday so it wasn’t very busy/loud, service was very attentive and food was incredible! So delicious as well as accommodating in terms of food preferences. Will definitely recommend to anyone coming to visit!
Great place to stop for lunch whilst exploring Edinburgh. We had reserved a table and could hear walk ins be told there was a 45 minute wait so Deffo worth pre booking.
Food was delicious and well priced. Definitely recommend.
Food was lovely our server David was fab and made us feel welcome and had great knowledge about the menu he also was great with our kids and made us laugh
Our group of 3 had the chicken, the lamb and the haggis with cheese mash, bacon mash and black pudding mash. The mains were absolutely delicious and mash was yummy other than the black pudding which was a bit disappointing as it was just lumps of black pudding in the mash. Smaller pieces would have been better appreciated. Service was quick and with a smile and a joke. The sticky toffee pudding was very nice but more butterscotch sauce would have made it perfect. The ice cream and baileys dessert was thoroughly enjoyed!
