Makars Gourmet Mash Bar (West End)
Food and service great. We were served by Calli who was very polite and efficient even after sustaining an injury making me a cup of coffee
We were in town for a brief visit and loved Makars - food was delicious, especially the lamb shank and traditional smoked sausage! Ended the meal with the sticky toffee pudding - YUM. We came on a quiet night, so their were only a few guests and the noise level low. Our server, Ella, was excellent - very nice and very prompt. Couldn't have asked for a better experience!
Second visit this year to Edinburgh so we had to visit Makars again . We weren’t disappointed great quality food and excellent service
I booked a table here after reading other reviews. I'm so glad I did. We got there 15 minutes early but our table was ready and waiting. We were greeted by the staff who were so smiley and friendly. There was a range of food available ... I wanted to try it all but settled for the lamb shank and my son ordered the haggis. When the food arrived it was piping hot and so delicious. It was also very filling. I wanted to try a pudding but just couldnt fit one in. We will definitely be returning here again when we return to Edinburgh. I would definitely recommend here to people who are after a tasty, piping hot, satisfying meal in a calm, relaxed and friendly setting.

Was visiting for the Tattoo (which was amazing!) and booked a table here online having read rave reviews. And they were right! Both food and service were spot on (thanks Ola snd Callie). The menu is simple, kind of pick and mix. Between us we had haggis and vegetarian haggis with a mixture of wholegrain mustard mash and cheese and chive mash. It was all fabulous! Beautifully presented, fragrant and yummy!!! Checked out food going to other diners (like you do) and want to come back to work our way through the menu :)
Had a really nice, relaxed atmosphere too, and we weren't rushed away when done.
Don't be put off by the shuttered exterior during the day - this is a hidden gem!

Table was sticky, the furniture very worn and broken. Food was meh! Their flavored mashes all tasted the same. Most disappointing dinner we had in Edinburgh. Maybe the location closer to the castle might be better, but we are not trying it! Very uninspired dinner.......
Makars was able to accommodate a group of 7 since we booked early - 6PM. There was only one table seated before us. We ordered our food and waited and waited and waited while all those who came after us were served. Instead of the waitress admitting that she hadn't handed in our order - she lied about how busy the cook was and that the others were seated before us. If she only owned up to her mistake, it would have been forgiven and our dining experience much improved. All that said, the braised lamb shank, chived cheese mash, smoked bean mash and lastly, the haggis were excellent.
We were a group of 10 people. Some of us ordered haggis or lamb and most of us ordered slow cooked beef. All the diches were awesome and the food was Delicious!. The service was also outstanding. The team does a great job in this restaurant.
Not your typical Scottish pub, but the staff was very helpful, it was not too crowded, and the food was excellent.
We enjoyed the food at Makars west- end - the vegetarian haggish was delicious, as were wild boar sausagesand the variety of mash caters for all tastes and diets - the service great !! Well recommended

We were a large party and Makars was very accommodating and patient. We were able to pay separately without anything any issues - which was great!
The place was packed, it’s clearly a popular spot. The food was absolutely delicious. Massive portions, great prices. I’ve already recommended this place to a few friends who will be in the area.
We both had lamb which literally fell off the bone it was so tender & washed it down with some water and a good bottle of Shiraz. All very nice. Service was good & the staff friendly. Good value too at £51 for two

Such a wonderful experience at Makars! From beginning to end, the service AND food was amazing! Started with the “skins” without knowing much about them and they had us talking about how we absolutely need to be able to get something like them in the States - perfect crispiness on the potatoes and the salsa and cheese flavors make it a perfect combination. Moved on to the main course - between us, we tried the wild boar sausage, the smoked sausage and the chicken, all with the cheddar cheese and chive mashed potatoes. The potatoes had a good amount of cheese which very much pleased all of us and all of the meats were greatly enjoyed as well (I believe we liked the boar sausage the best, but can’t go wrong). Finished off the meal with the sticky toffee pudding (a suggestion from one of our servers) and, again, just incredible!! All of our servers (Sophie, Kirsty, and Liam) did a wonderful job taking care of us even with another large table that came in right behind us. A MUST try place to dine!
Absolutely perfect. Trendy location. We are German tourists and had a great time in Scotland.
The service was great here, but the food wasn’t anything to write home about. There are better restaurants serving Scottish food out there!

The concept is a good one and the decor was nice enough however the portions are on the small side. The decor is basic and our table was dirty and was never cleaned despite the restaurant not being overly busy. The food was nice enough but i don't think i would rush back.
Our first evening in Edinburgh and we had a lovely meal at Makar's Gourmet Mash Bar. Very cool interior, transformed industrial meets coffee house . Liam, our charming waiter was very helpful. We were seated quickly and Liam recommended a raspberry gin cocktail which smelled wonderful and would have tasted as good had it not been that sweet. That and the noise levels -varied but could go really high due to the accoustics- were the only uh-ohs, and not very major ones. The boar sausages were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside with that delish touch of brown and juicy inside. Very flavourful seasonings; I could use one now. My husband had the lamb shank; didn't bother giving the other choices more than a glance. The lamb just slid off the bone into a gorgeous red sauce of red wine, cranberry, rosemary. And now the star dish around which everything else revolves, the mash. I ordered the roasted bacon and green onion mash with a little melted cheese. Not going to forget the texture (smooth, crumbly and not sticky at all) or the taste, crunchy bacon, a little zing from the onion. My husband had the chive and cheddar mash and in both our cases, the mash took the honours. We preferred to finish the mash and left some of the meats behind. Go there hungry because the helpings are massive. Thanks Liam for your suggestions.

Every item on the menu is well crafted and executed perfectly. I had the braised beef skirt with cheddar mash. The meat was so well cooked it was fork tender. The table next to us ordered the haggis, jeeps and tatties. The presentation was perfect. Very friendly staff.
Seating ideal not too noisy, good choice on menu at reasonable prices, service was very good.

Arrived in plenty time were seated and asked if we would like a drink. We chose our drink then advised it wasn't in stock so we chose something else, same thing, not in stock. So for the third time we chose something else, surprise, not in stock. Absolutely shocking for a Friday night so we walked out and will never be back.
Thought food very average in fact that’s being kind starter of haggis neep and tarries was a joke it was that small

It was a first for us, as we don't seem to have any of these in Kent. We all throughly enjoyed the experience, and the food was amazing. Looking forward to our next visit to Edinburgh, so we can come back again.
All the portions great; ask for help pairing your dish with a mash. gammon was out of this world.
