A brilliant taste of Scotland in a chilled out and friendly environment. Highly recommended.
If you're looking for authentic Scottish food with contemporary twist, this is the place to go to. The food is just excellent, and the prices are really moderate. Very friendly staff. Overall, excellent experience. The only downside was the music that was a tiny bit too loud and too mainstream.
Good value and tasty food, wild boar sausages, beef skirt and lamb shank all excellent.
Great food & service. Dealt with our dietary needs easily & was very friendly, independently owned place.
Great food, excellent value. Lovely comfort food with good quality ingredients. Relaxed atmosphere. Server Christina was really friendly and welcoming
Great food and service!!! Good portion size and beef skirt just fell apart!!! Will be back!
I could have licked the plate clean, it was so tasty, but being a cardinal I thought it best not to embarrass the church. The staff were friendly and good fun, the place looked spotless, beer was good, and the food was right up my street. Potatoes, and meat, but certainly not plain.
Very nice restaurant, delicious food, great service.
Very impressed by the food and service, bit quiet but due to time of day probably. Definitely recommend and would return when we go back to Edinburgh.
Wonderful food upon arrival in Edinburgh, delicious and great value.
We had read such excellent reviews of this restaurant and were really looking forward to it.
The menu was excellent and we placed our order at 6:25pm. The food did not arrive until nearly 8pm.
Not sure what was going on that evening, but we received no update on the delay and no apology at all for the very slow service. The food itself was very tasty, but we were expecting a relatively simple menu to have been served within a reasonable timeframe. We can only guess that they were short of kitchen staff on the evening that we visited.
Great comfort food for a cold Autumn evening - I had the beef skirt and my companion had the lamb shank. Both of us chose the mash with black pudding. The only real negative was the wine - an Aussie Shiraz recommended by the waiter - which was exceptionally disappointing and let the meal down for both of us.
If you love mash potatoes (like me) definitely try here.
Delivers what it says on the box. Great food accompanied by flavoured mash of your choice. I opted for the chargrilled chicken and my husband had the beef skirt. Both were delicious and very reasonable. The service was second to none with friendly attentive staff. We would definitely eat her again on our next visit to Edinburgh.
It was very friendly and patient staff, great food and good value. Just great!!
First visit and will return, food was so good, staff very good
Great food, one of the best sticky toffee pudding we had!
Really good hearty food. Filling and tasty. Pleasant staff, good atmosphere.
Great food. Friendly service. Casual atmosphere. Would recommend to all fans of the potato.
Very friendly, lovely music and fantastic food - really enjoyed our time there.
Went here while on a short break in Edinburgh. Wanted some hearty comfort food that was a little bit special. This ticked the boxes very well. Would recommend to anyone, and would definately visit again.
Good, wholesome local food. Staff attentive and worked hard. Complimentary pint of beer. Excellent value for money.
Had a great meal here the other night. The waitress was friendly and our food was delicious (big portions too). The white wine is absolutely terrible, but that’s not the restaurant’s fault.
Food was very tasty... especially the home made butternut squash soup!!
We had the vegetarian haggis, with the cheese & chive mash and the chicken marinated in Drambouie... with the cheese &bacon mash.... all was delicious!!
Would recommend to others!!
Found on a search of Restaurants in Edinburgh - good reviews. We were eating early as booked in for second performance of Tattoo - time between placing our order and the food being served was longer than expected in view of low number of diners - that said the food was worth the wait.
Makars have a well thought out and unusual menu strategy and concentrate on provide simple hearty meals under the heading of traditional Scottish/English. The food was hearty, wholesome and great value. We would definitely go again but don't expect a London style gastro pub.
Lovely meal, something a little different. An issue we had was dealt with immediately, professionally, nothing was a bother, staff were polite and friendly and a free drink was offered whilst the issue was sorted out. Food was very tasty and good value.
Absolutely wonderful very scrummie meal lots of choices _ friendly attentive staff, relaxing atmosphere and good value for money. Nice sweets as well
Came here after a couple of shows at the Fringe, not too busy, orders taken quickly and everything arrived in good time. The potato skins with cheese and salsa were tasty as were the mains. The portion size was fine, my wife did question whether the slaw was the best accompaniment for a main with gravy but beyond that no issues with Makars at all.
We had dinner last Thursday at the Makars Gourmet Mash Bar.
Great food, great waiter (Alex), nothing to critize!
Best regards from Leverkusen/Germany
Food , service and ambience all worked well. Vegetarian options different and tasty.
Missed out on ox cheeks and had haggis..excellent. great value for money
The food was amazing, staff exceptional and they brought out sticky toffee pudding "on the house" because it was my daughter's birthday. Couldnt recommend highly enough!
Was really looking forward to lamb shank and skirlie. Lamb shank not on menu, skirlie sold out(at 7pm). Second and third choices were not available either. Very disappointing on a birthday celebration. What we had was ok and the potato skins are delicious and different.
Had a lovely meal for 4 whilst at the Edinburgh festival.
Brilliant menu giving us a taste of haggis and mash which was very tasty and very well presented.
Seemed fitting as we were in Scotland.
Loved the vegetarian haggis with mash with cheese and chives and delicious turnip.
My partner loved the black pudding mash and scotch egg mmmmm
Unfortunately we were dashing to get to our next venue for the evening, ofherwise would have lingered there much longer.....my favoutite meal of our 3 night stay.
Found this place on Tripadvisor and can thoroughly recommend it fantastically friendly staff who explained the menu, when it arrived it well worth the trip really tastie and the accompanying sauce was out of this world, couldn’t manage a desert sadly
Brilliant place will be back again I’m sure
This was recommended to us by a friend and we were not disappointed. The staff were very friendly and the service and food was excellent. We enjoyed it so much so that we ate again at their restaurant in the old town of Edinburgh on the next evening and received the same quality food and fantastic service.
A relatively small menu, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but from the three of us, we were told on two of our orders that they were out of stock and no longer had it. We were not told this before we ordered but had to wait until we’d chosen before we were told which then made it a rush for us to pick an alternative. Food service was also relatively slow when the restaurant was around 75% full so more serving staff are needed.
Great food and excellent service. The veggie haggis skins are delicious. Will definitely be back soon.
Booked a table for 16:15 , arrived only to find the front door shutters half down and the opening times displayed in the window stating they open at 17:00. Disappointed in Makars and disillusioned with Open Table.
