Friendly small relaxed and comfortable surroundings. Staff attentive and welcoming.
Great menu, simple Scottish meals with a fabulous choice of flavoured mash potato to go with each dish.
Food was delicious and a good sized portion.
Good value for money and a very enjoyable experience.
Food and service was excellent. Had the cheesy potato skins to start which came piping hot and with the most delicious salsa, great starter or even side dish! Then moved onto a Wild Boar Sausage which was the most flavoursome sausage I've had. All followed up with a sticky toffee pudding, can't go wrong. Definitely a place to dine at if you like simple, great tasting food and mash!
We are a familt of five with three adult sons and it was our first night at Edinburg; one Scottish friend of me had recommended it and we were very satisfied with our choose! Everything was nice and tasty, and we could eat Scottish food; I will recommend!👌
We have been to the other Edinburgh Makars and enjoyed it so tried West End branch. It was excellent. Only disappointment was no draught beer but that is being set up. On a cold, drizzly evening Makars food was just great.
Our friends hadn't been to Makers before but were very impressed and will return.
Food was great.
The Haggis Neeps and Tatties was a delight.
however nice as the potato dishes were they were not potato skins. They were fried new potato's.

I attended this restaurant on 23 March to celebrate my 50th birthday. I had travelled to Edinburgh from Liverpool especially for the occasion and the restaurant was chosen based on past reviews. I'm so glad that I took notice of those reviews. The food was delicious, the service was lovely and cheerful without being overbearing and the value for money was amazing...even with a bottle of sparkly added to the bill. I would definitely recommend a trip to this restaurant and savour every morsel of the delicious food.
The food was amazing! We had the Beef and Sausage (with onion gravy) and I could not recommend them more! Callie served us and was very polite and helpful, checking in to make sure everything was going well at regular intervals. Honestly one of the best restaurant meals we’ve had, especially given the price! Large portions too! Will hopefully be back soon!!!
Food very good and excellent value but we had a table near the door and it was too cold.
Friendly staff and food was good quality although portion sizes were a little small.
Tasty food, quick service and great value. Definitely would visit again.
The food is delicious, especially the lamb shank, also the garlic mushrooms potato skins are a must, value for money!
Excellent value for money
Simple, tasty local food. If there is a fault with this place, maybe the portions are too big.
We arrived at 7pm on Thursday evening and the restaurant was empty, this was worrisome but it was unfounded, the food and service were excellent. I had beef skirt which was extremely tender, my friend had wild boar sausages, I had a tiny taste of them and thought that they were lovely and juicy, but to me the herbs were overpowering- my friend enjoyed them though so that’s just a personal preference. I will definitely return. The price with a glass of wine, a soft drink, a shared started of potato skins, 2 main courses and 2 cups of tea was £42. Very reasonable.
We had a very nice meal here. The whole service and friendly staff made for a great experience. I would definitely eat here again
My 1st time at this venue, having been quite a few times to the Mound. Food was just as great as normal but despite not being overly busy, service was lacking somewhat. The 3 waiting staff were chatting around the bar area and it took several attempts for us to get their attention.
Love the menu/food and indeed the value but think I'll go back to the Mound, it feels cosier and more friendly.
Delicious vegetarian haggis and cheesy mash! My partner had black pudding mash and was a bit disappointed to find that it was just normal mash on a layer of black pudding, so bear that in mind. Otherwise very nice.
The six of us enjoyed a great meal at Makars. Never been before, loved the choices on the menu. Not too many, but we all had something different and everything was fantastic. Service was excellent. Hopefully we can get back there next time we're in Edinburgh.
After a day of rugby and beer it was just what we needed....wholesome comfort food to soak up the booze!
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Our only disappointment was that you don’t serve Americano coffee. No one in our party likes filter coffee. Overall though, we had a great evening.
I was there for my birthday meal with my husband, son and girlfriend. We had never been to the restaurant before, but a friend highly recommended it. Great friendly service from a lovely Australian waitress, nothing was too much trouble. We didn't have to wait too long for our food to arrive at the table. Helpings were quite large, but manageable. We couldn't manage one of their desserts. A lovely clean place and toilets were spotless. We would go back.
Good service, great food what more do you need. Great potion sizes and the food was fresh, 5 stars.
Christina welcomed us warmly. The food was comforting and excellent (first taste of haggis for us) and good beers to accompany. Not too loud, not too quiet... Recommended...
If you ever need to take friends for a tasty Scottish foodie experience, this is your place. Delicious dishes, that look good too. Not your usual meat and two veg. Great portions. Take your visitor who wants to "try haggis"!
I ate vegetarian sausages (not a veggie) with black pudding mash. They were good! Not amazing, but happily tasty & good. Atmosphere was casual & relaxed.
Excellent greeting and welcome. We had reserved online and we're a little disappointed to be seated at an unprepared table at the back of the table restaurant however that is a very minor comment. Food and service excellent along with friendly and attentive staff. Thank you, can't wait to return
Makars Mash Bar was recommended to us prior to visiting Edinburgh and didn't disappoint. We booked in at the one in the West End on the Friday (28/12/18) after Xmas so it was relatively quiet. Staff are friendly & attentive & the food might sound simple i.e. sausage & mash but it is absolute quality & so tasty. I'd recommend the Garlic Mushroom Skins for starters, Chargrilled Smoked Sausage with Spring onion & Bacon Mash, finish with the Sticky Toffee pudding............loved it.
This had the feel of a local joint. Super casual and very laidback atmosphere. We tucked into a couple rounds of starch and was not disappointed. From jacketed potatoes to the haggis starter to the the entrees. All hit the mark.
Great food and great service! I’d go back and recommend
Fantastically warm welcome. Lovely menu explanation and helpful recommendations. Service from Christina with a smile and genuine warmth. Food was hot, attractively presented and really delicious. Would return in a heartbeat, and I will.
The food was good and the service great. But the decor and Christmas decoration was not that inspiring. The haggis and steak with mash tasted good. But the biggest issue why we would bot be back was that the ventilation was very noisy. It felt like being in an industrial workplace.
Very friendly and cheerful staff, didn’t have to wait very long before our orders were served. The food was presented very well, lovely and hot, very tasty.
had an excellent meal and overall visit
it was my first time there and i would go back happily
Friendly service, good value dinner, loved the black pudding mash. Would recommend.
Had meal here after Rugby waitress was very efficient and friendly food was average mash potatoes were a bit dry could do with more butter to make them smoother. My wife had the sausages which the first one was excellent shame about 2nd a bit rubbery, my beef was very good.
There is only one word to described Makars West End, the service, the food, the ambience and the whole dining experience and that word is FANTASTIC
We went because we were gifted a voucher but we would definitely go again and certainly recommend it to others. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and there was plenty of it. It was quite early in the evening when we went and mid week but the restaurant was getting busier as we left. The music that was playing was not to our taste however it was not loud and it was quite easy to have a conversation over it.
A brilliant taste of Scotland in a chilled out and friendly environment. Highly recommended.
If you're looking for authentic Scottish food with contemporary twist, this is the place to go to. The food is just excellent, and the prices are really moderate. Very friendly staff. Overall, excellent experience. The only downside was the music that was a tiny bit too loud and too mainstream.
Good value and tasty food, wild boar sausages, beef skirt and lamb shank all excellent.
Great food & service. Dealt with our dietary needs easily & was very friendly, independently owned place.
