We had high expectations. It was a birthday celebration and the table was reserved a long time in advance.
The food was just ok and the service was not good. After the first two rounds of dishes, there was a long pause and when the next round was served the food was hardly warm as if it sitted and waited for a while for the waitress. The service was not friendly and the waitress English was hard to understand. Big disappointment...
it was my second visit to mama mayan, but it was a bad experience. this time we, 5 people, ordered the set menu. the waiting time was so long, the portion sizes were small and not enough for 5 people when they came as share dishes, skewers were over-cooked and tasteless, beef was difficult to chew, fruits were not fresh.... while the setting menu is not cheap at all.
I had a good experience for the first visit, but this second visit will be my final visit.
3rd time I ate there. Disappointed bu the bald tastes. Really needed the sambal on practically every dish.
The desert fruit was largely not very ripe so too sour.
Fish sateh too salt. The bit of white fish in the rice table didn’t taste of anything.
Some things were alright but on the whole if it stays like this I’m not coming back.
We had a really nice dinner. The food was good and very cheap. We choose different dishes for two persons and we were surprised when we had to pay the check. We thought they forgot something on the check but they didn’t. So for us it was a nice surprise.
Had a wonderful time with my wife on her birthday . The dishes were interesting and well cooked. Also liked the hospitality of the hostess serving our table.
We had such a wonderful time at Mama Makan getting Indonesian food for the first time. We got the fixed menu and it was incredible. Highly recommend!
Lekker eten van goede kwaliteit!
Absolutely delicious food and wonderful service. The staff were attentive and polite. Loved the decor and ambience.
The sauces did not live up to expectations. Chicken was raw.
We can not recommend visiting this restaurant. It is for tourists not those who have dined in an authentic Indonesian restaurant.
Indonesian cuisine is my favorite but this was a bit disappointing to be honest. As a chef I may be too picky but the flavours were not how they should be in my opinion. The service was great, the people were very nice and welcoming!
Nice but small portions and not a lot of variety for the price
One of the best value Indonesian Rijstafel / Rice Tavel options in town: So many courses and plates per course that we were barely able to finish, yet each dish a little gem in itself: Shrinp coconut soup, slow-cooked beef, fish, scampi, lamb, veg, exotic fruit etc. - amazing! Altogether a little bit spicy - would be great if they had one entire menu non-spicy, much as they have a full vegan rijstafel menu. The ambiance is more stylish than cozy, but the friendly service makes you feel right at home. And the New Year's dinner - wow!!! Lobster as part of the Rijstafel and a never-ending dessert buffet - keep some space...
Mama Makan was great! Highly recommend the rijsttafel. Definitely worth the money - food was delicious and the experience is so much fun!
We are Indonesian next went around Amsterdam to try different Indonesian restaurants. We believe this is the most authentic Indonesian food we tasted in the city. Good, fresh flavours and nice different courses. Excellent rendang and soto.
I thought the restaurant will serve a fusion Indonesian food but I was completely wrong. The taste is authentic. I know because I am Indonesian food. I have tried Indolicious platter and cava brut for lunch. Very nice!
A chic dining interior but the price is not expensive. I’m surprised. It’s clean and the service is excellent. Definitely will come back again.
Defnetly the best indonsian resrurant in amsterdam
Vero good Indonesian food.
Had a lovely dinner. Great food and great service. Definitely recommended!
The satay were SO good!
Excellent ambiance. Great food. The tasting menu was interesting and plenty.
Our 'rijsttafel' was a real treat! Wonderful and delicious! The ambiance was great and the crew was very friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurants to my friends.
After spending a day wandering Amsterdam was looking for a nice dinner. Found this gem via OpenTable. Wasn’t sure what to expect but chose the tasing menu (Mama’s Favorite Rijsttafel) to get a good sampling of food. This was absolutely fantastic. 14 dishes over 5 courses. Everything tasted wonderful and the service was fantastic. Would easily recommend this to anyone wanting a great dinner. Also have a vegan Rijsttafel so great for groups with mixed food requirements.
The food is pure Indonesian, fresh base products well prepared and represented, the portions are measure to the number of persons at the rice table and are not over presented, the only thing i missed was the Kroepoek and extra pot of home made sambal and bottle of ketjap manis with the dishes. Maybe you have to ask for it? the overtone of the service was english in the language that the personal use, but seeing that it is attached to a hotel it's understandable, for only dutch speaking people it may be a bit of a hinder but not insurmountable for the sphere and good eating, excellent beer and wine selection is also present.
The food has a WOW effect ferry good and nice price for the plate i had 15 euro! good service
Nice ambiance, great food and formal but friendly staff. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to others.
The waiter was very kind and welcoming they offered a variety of food and a suitable amount of food for the price, the place is very nice and the environment is cozy and casual.
In the restaurant the volume of the music was too high for any decent dinner conversation.
The food was only of average quality whereas the prices were in the upper range. We might have got these dishes cheaper in other Indonesian restaurants in town.
The fancy architecture influences the prices in a negative way.
In spite of all the negative criticism, it has to me mentioned that the waitresses were extremely friendly and helpful.
Pricy for what you receive, the queality of the food and the service. They try to avoid you to choose "á la carte" and you order rijstaffel
We had the extended rice tafel and we had the 3 course botanical beer pairing and the 3 course wine pairing respectively. It's all recommended!
we enjoyed the place. The food (rejstaffel) was nice and good service. can recommend the place for larger group of people
Not a bad restaurant per se, but there are so many better (and cheaper) Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam. The food lacks the full flavours and spiciness that I expect from real Indonesian cooking
A tremendous amount of delicious food. Multiple courses, courteous staff, pleasant atmosphere
Good food, good location, good service. Recommendation for sure
I decided to come here for Father’s Day. This place is wonderful. Delicious food without making you feel extremely stuffed. I like the pre-fixed menu for family sharing. Great variety and definitely creates a unique experience for all first-time visitors.
Didn't realise it was a hotel restaurant, as it was not advertised as such on the website, which probably accounts for its inflated prices. Portions were very small for the price charged. The food was very mediocre, considering how many good (and much cheaper) Indonesian restaurants can be found in Amsterdam. The vegan food contained egg, and salad (gado-gado) was smothered in peanut butter. On the plus side, the staff were very pleasant, although they did get our order wrong twice. On balance, a very disappointing experience.
Delicious Indonesian rijsttafels / rice table (much, MUCH better that your average Dutch “Chinees-Indisch restaurant”) and not just very, but indeed EXTREMELY friendly staff.
However, the two things keeping me from what would have been a full five stars overall rating are:
1] The background music being too loud (not overwhelming, just pointlessly slightly too loud)
and MUCH more importantly, the same ailment many restaurants suffer from:
2] Tables WAAAAY to close to each other – I’d estimate 40-50cm at most. Dear excellent staff of MM’s, please note: THAT IS TOO CLOSE. In our case, an English speaking woman at the table next to us almost completely ruined our diner+evening with her high-pitched and overarticulated voice. But even if she hadn’t been there, it’s simply UNCOMFORTABLE & UNEASY having complete strangers sitting too damn close to your own table. That’s what’ll keep us from both referring friends to to you, and coming back ourselves. As far as we’re concerned, not enough privacy is a dealbreaker for any restaurant, and in that respect, sadly, MM violates our personal standards.
Service and ambient are great! Nice (International) staff and realy good service. We ordered the rijsttafel (€36,50) and the start (soup) was great. Then the sate and main course was not in line with my expecatations. Not the taste and flavors I had in mind from visits to other Indonesian restaurants.
We had a nice evening but I will not return.
Really tasty food. Great value for tasting menus. Service is friendly but strangely forgetful. Desserts need work.
Very nice rijsttafel, different dishes than usual and great flavours. Do wish they would also offer an a la carte menu. Also I’d recommend starting dinner with a cocktail at the bar!
Mama Makan is een sfeervol restaurant met goed en lekker eten. Het personeel was vriendelijk, attend en benaderde ons persoonlijk. We hebben genoten!
