Amazing The dining experience was amazing the food was excellent the atmosphere Was welcoming.
As always , the food was great, the service excellent, and the process on line is convenient for reservations. The current social restrictions have not dampened the congeniality of this iconic restaurant.
Felt safe and comfortable, food was delicious, service was outstanding.
Very disappointing! We were there on Friday December 11 and it was the first time back in a long time. We were looking forward to a wonderful meal like we used to always get when Mastoris was a staple to our dinning out choices. My meal was the Captains Choice seafood platter that was suppose to have Cole slaw which never came. And was so overcooked and tasteless I could not eat most of it. My husband ordered the steak and it was all fat and the vegetables were over seasoned and not edible. The rest of our party had the chicken parm that they said was good and a chicken dish that once again had the over seasoned vegetables.
The Mastoris famous bread was the highlight of the meal. I was very disappointed!
Order was wrong. Food was over cooked. Had zero flavor. Service was crazy slow. Place was empty so no excuse.
Meal and service were great. I had heard ownership changed and was concerned. Those were put to rest as the only concern turned out to be that it was so empty inside. Tables were nicely spaced and Covid menus offered any choices. Warm cheese bread was wonderful. Made a pitstop to the bakery on the way out for take home yummies.
My husband and I had a really wonderful dining experience at Mastoris. First, the outdoor tent with heaters and string lights was just beautiful and made me feel so safe and comfortable. They are really taken COVID seriously and the bathroom was spotless and the indoor tables when I walked through gave a TON of space between patrons. The food was really terrific. I had the scallops and have included a picture. Look at the size! Wow! My husband had the salmon which was moist, well seasoned and a generous portion. For dessert, we shared some cheesecake (so creamy and rich) which we couldn't even finish. Seriously, don't pass on dessert here! It is so nice to have a place which so much variety and quality ingredients!
In desperate need of a makeover
Great place! - I actually came from Baltimore, MD to meet a friend there for dinner, so I really didn't know what to expect. The entire staff - from the gal who sat us, to our waiter, and other staff members we interacted with - could not have been more friendly and helpful! I had a heaping helpful of New Jersey hospitality, and it was great!!!
Fries terrible. Grilled cheese weird. Chicken parm sandwich ehhhhh. Server was so nice and cute
Food was good. Service was excellent. Menu is too limited. Suggestions: include 1-2 egg dishes, 1-2 more hot sandwiches and hot wraps.
What a great meal! The place is under new management and they have made tremendous improvements. The food is outstanding. Not your typical diner food at all. They observe all COVID protocols so we felt comfortable. They still give the table their great cheese bread and cinnamon bread (take some home). I highly recommend this restaurant for lunch or dinner. You will enjoy it.
Not sure this was the filet minon I ordered. Looked more like a sirloin. It was so over cooked and flatted out. I had to ask for steak sauce, that’s how bad it was.
Love the complimentary cinnamon and cheese danish bread. Great bakery items to take home after a hearty meal.
Covid has made the atmosphere seem cavernous, as a handful of tables are spread out through the dining rooms.
We had a skirt steak which was uneventful. Served with lukewarm potatoes and canned corn with some peppers diced in it. We also tried the meatloaf, same sides. The meatloaf was very dry.
Not their best night.
Server stumbled through whole service process.
This was date night for my wife and I and the food and service was great. Hostess takes your temperature before being seated. Then you get this great smelling mango hand sanitizer. The food was great as we both got the salmon & our waitress was great. We will definitely be going back in the near future.
My husband and I celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary this week and dined at Mastori's. Even though the restaurant had few diners, the food was fabulous and the service was flawless. The cinnamon and cheese yeast breads are memorable and as always, worth the drive from North Jersey.
Very nice people working in restaurant.
This classic Diner continues to improve and adapt under COVID-19
This is the first time eating out where my temperature was taken by the hostess prior to entering, my phone number was requested and they gave us a complimentary mango citrus hand sanitizer. We were seated at a clean table with a disposable menu. This should be the standard at all dining establishments. Well done guys!
Anyway our waiter Gary was attentive and professional.
Besides the complementary hand sanitizer we were given complimentary cheese bread and a Cinnamon bread. Both were warm, sweet fresh and flavorful.
They serve liquor and have a well stocked bar FYI.
We started our evening with the classic onion soup and my wife had the soup of the day clam chowder. Both were exceptional. The other couple shared a bang bang shrimp with a Calamari both lightly fried. We did not share but they
really enjoyed both.
This was a pleasant surprise.
While we waited for our entree we were entertained by and enjoyed live music. Yes live music is back! I’m told they have live music 2-3 times a week. This Saturday evening was 50s and 60s music and the singers were actually very good. Since covid started one of things we really missed is the arts theater n ive music.
For an entree I ordered the salmon. It was really good. The chef somehow made it crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. Sorta like a Pittsburgh style steak.
My wife went with the flat iron salad which was a generous portion and took home about half.
Mastoris has always been know for its bakery which is second to none in the area.
We debated over dessert and I convinced my wife to share the lover’s strawberry shortcake. I must warn you the portion is more then generous. Both of us were unable to finish. The other couple has the chocolate chip cheesecake.
Equally huge but they finished theirs.
Mastoris continues the tradition of offering good size portions, quality delicious satisfying fresh food at a good value.
We had reservations and were seated promptly at our time. The restaurant is gorgeous and very clean. We sat at our table for 20 minutes before a waiter came over to help us. From where he was serving I don’t believe we were in his section but he came over because he saw no one else bothered. The service was great after that. Food was ok. Limited menu and just ok for the price.
My first time back in almost 9 months. I was very impressed with the service, Management coming around to make sure everything was great. The quality of the food has improved so much. I had the crab cakes and my wife had the salmon. The salmon was incredible. We ate outside and felt very safe. I would recommend if you haven't been back to Mastoris you need to check it out The entertainment was really good. I also check out the indoors as we wanted to take home some bake goods. The renovations are amazing and I am looking forward to going back and eating inside. The tables are spaced out, and the tables and chairs are sanitize after each seating It is the only restaurant that I have been to that they take your temperature and write down the information. I have been to a few other places and did not feel safe during this pandemic. I will be back!
The food was horrible. The service was very slow, though the waiter was very nice. We will never go back.
When we arrived, we were told they couldn’t find our reservation, which we made through Open Table. I had a confirmation number and I pulled it up on my phone. I was told it would be a 10 minute wait. We waited 26 minutes. Food was blah, a little overpriced. My partner ordered the chicken pot pie, which came dry as a bone with no sauce. We sent it back and they poured gravy into the pot pie and tried to make it look good. It was horrible. We have eaten here several times in the past and will not be returning.
Very good outdoor experience during COVID with a great effort to ensure everyone's safety. Large tented area + several picnic tables set up near bar area. Music on the weekends.
I am old enough to remember when Mastori's was a classic rail car diner with a bonus room. That said, I hadn't been here since college, some 28 years ago. I was pleasantly surprised the feel of the place hasn't changed much, while the interior space has grown dramatically. My party of 8 sat in the new-to-me section to the left of the bakery at the entrance. There we had plenty of space around several tables joined together. Another large group came in 10 minutes later, and sat next to us, but the sound quality was such that we did not need to shout to be heard over any neighboring commotion.
Just as I remember, the portions were huge. I had the chicken pot pie, which was easily the best I have ever had. We ended up taking home about half of what was served. Leftovers were just as good. We also got a full plate of their sweet breads, cinnamon and cheese. Very good. They were practically desert in and of themselves.
Service was excellent, and our server was very good at keeping us happy. I will definitely be back, only much sooner than 28 years.
The server Lexi was fantastic
Food was not great. Meat was fatty.
Loved how they completed the remodel of the interior of the restaurant. We were a large party & server quickly and efficiently. Food was delicious as usual.
In ordered a cappuccino and it tasted like steamed milk - no flavor. My friend ordered a cafe mocha and her mug had a lipstick stain that wasn’t washed off properly. Plus, all the flavor was at the bottom of the drink. It took quite a while for the food to come, but it wasn’t bad. Comfort wise, it’s a good place. Our server was very nice to us and the atmosphere was cozy. However there was a slight odor that persisted throughout our stay at the diner. Overall, I’ve had worse so this wasn’t terrible. But they should work on sanitation/hygiene.
I remember coming here when I was a kid and how much I loved the food. I was very surprise how much it changed including the menu. I can remember the line outside waiting to get in today my family and I just walked in and was seated immediately.
Undeniably the worst dining experience our family has experienced. Ever. Not only was the service unbearably slow, but two f the three hot dishes arrived stone cold when they finally did come, my son's steak was extremely overcooked, my Cobb salad was a pile of lettuce with very few toppings and a chemical-tasting vinaigrette served in a plastic cup on the side. My daughter ordered the eggplant parm and it did arrive hot and she was able to eat some of it. The other three dishes were almost entirely uneaten, at least by humans. We were able to box up the steak and pork chops and bring them home to our dog who is less picky about the quality and cooking techniques of his meats. Even without eating our meals the experience took us around two hours due to the extremely slow service. My husband did complain to the manager and he had several excuses, one of which was "you caught us on a bad night" and another that several servers had called out sick. They took the two most offensive meals off the bill and gave us a large cheese bread to take home and a $25 gift card. We may use it on the bakery but we will never return to this restaurant to dine.
Excellent diner and considerate staff; if you are seeking a quiet place to dine and chat for a while, this may not be the place. The food, both in quality and portion, is very good.
Our server was the best...she was friendly and quick with the service. The food was outstanding and plentiful as always.
We chose this as a meeting spot for a family Christmas lunch, coming from PA/MD/NJ. Based on the reviews, we were pretty hopeful. We waited an unusually long time to be waited on, but since we were catching up, we were more puzzled than annoyed. Finally our server came by to take our food orders; he was extremely polite and helpful. We wondered if there had been a mix up on who's table we were, since it took so long and we were not offered more than water until our meals were delivered. However, once our orders were taken, our food came out quickly -- generous portions, reasonably priced, good diner food. The menu is huge! Mastoris appears to be a neighborhood favorite. I saw many delicious looking plates coming out of the kitchen. I wouldn't say we had a bad experience, but it wasn't stellar either. And everyone raves about the rolls in the reviews -- I have to agree, they were yummy.
Pasta was a little bit too greasy and runny for me I just will not get that the next time I go.
Fine service; good food; great bread. They were out of their "special" pot roast by 5:30 pm. But they made up for it by building the hot turkey sandwich into a full dinner dish. We'll be back.
Mastoris always delivers a wonderful meal. Our waiter was fabulous. He had suggestions and he was full of character. There also was a nice variety of food choices in the daily specials, some were combinations of popular dishes, for example, fried ravioli with chicken Parmesan. The portions are always big and filling. You definitely will leave with a to-go container. And then there is the bread. The cinnamon and cheese breads brought to the table are like having the dessert course served before your meal. They also have a dessert tray that contains many of their popular cakes and pies - all included with your meal. Mastoris is a favorite and we will be back again soon.
Always great food, plenty to bring home, and awesome service/atmosphere!!
Always enjoyable and filling food. Always leftovers to take home! One of the best diners in NJ. I always miss it when I am spending months at my Florida condo annually
Unfortunately the evening got off to a rocky start with having to wait 30 minutes past reservation time before we were even sitting at a table. The waiter eventually took the drink order and disappeared for fifteen more minutes. The server (not our waiter) who brought the drinks was kind enough to take our food order after we mentioned how long we were waiting. Although abundant, the food was cold, vegetables not cooked at all and the fish tough and overcooked. On the bright side the minestrone soup was good and you get a lot of food for the money. Mastoris appeared way under staffed for the night and the kitchen was not able to deliver well prepared food at the right temperature.
Food was good. Service was average. The waiter never checked on us. He didn’t asked if we wanted dessert or coffee. Just dropped check on table and walked off.
