In 1991, Richard Rosenthal along with partner Brad Karsky opened Max a Mia in Avon, CT. Their vision was a restaurant that would allow diners to enjoy a "casual Italian bistro." That vision was an instant success. In the first year of operation, Max a Mia won "Best New Restaurant" from Connecticut Magazine. It also earned recognition for "top grossing restaurant in it's size" from Restaurant Hospitality. The brick oven, which is visible from the dining room, serves up stone pies "with a thin, wood-smoky-flavor crust and an array of toppings." While all the pasta dishes are outstanding, the daily risotto specials have been described as "luscious." Equally important, desserts such as traditional tiramisu or the unique white chocolate polenta cake complete the meal. Like it's sister restaurants, Max a Mia is focused on providing each guest with a truly enjoyable dining experience.

Couldn’t get a table until 8:45pm only to arrive and find the restaurant half empty. Seems they give preference to local reservations vs OpenTable

Max A Mia prepares the salmon perfectly. I like my salmon medium. With a Tuscan salad. Delicious every time. Half price bottle of wine.

First time in a long time the food was horrible. Even the server said the chef never should have cooked the steak it was so fatty. Management did reduce the bill but honestly not what we come to expect

So disappointing. I have heard many many mixed reviews about Max A Mia in the past year or more but I still give it a whirl now and then. Recent experience: Wait staff excellent but food was just plain not good. Two appetizers were not very good and then the Tuscan Salad (which I used to get all the time) arrived. Dressing very bland...no taste to the salad. Again...both of us agreed. This time we told Brad about the salad. Did not say anything about the appetizers. They were more than courteous and comped the salads. BUT...in take out orders over the last year, there seems to always be some issue....burnt (beyond eatable) stone pies, missing items. I am not alone - thus reason for completing this review. I heard this all the time....and so many of us were regulars at MaxAMia for such a long time. Doesn't stand up to the Max Group standard.

Always enjoy Max a Mia, however, this time my food could have been hotter. When dining with others it's difficult to mention that and then wait while others are eating.

So enjoyed the menu choices for CT Eats Week. Roasted cauliflower soup was wonderful with herb-crusted cod and a large slice of tiramisu for dessert. A 1/2 priced bottle( thirsty Thursday) of Montipulcuano made the meal even better.

I am happy to say - the same as always. That doesn't sound glowing, but it really is meant to be. Max's is one of the few places we can go where everything is consistently good. We're fans of Thurday 1/2 price wine night. Good food and great service - we'll be back.

The hostess was alone trying to seat many people. This made the wait time in the small entry area difficult. Food was good. Servers were attentive. Ladies rooms were atrocious. Doors don’t lock and the sink was clogged. Unacceptable in a restaurant of this caliber.

I've never experienced this before, but there were definitely expediting issues between the kitchen and the bar area on a Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately for us, our entrees arrived lukewarm and our ice cream dessert (Bocce Ball) arrived soft. So, everything we ordered remained in the kitchen area long after ready to be served.

For other diners who arrived around 4 pm for bar bites, I saw numerous plates (not shrimp cocktail) delivered and set down in the bar area but not served until until about 5 minutes later, so I'm sure their food was lukewarm as well.

It was a very disappointing (and unusual) bar experience for sure.

This restaurant is truly spectacular. The ambience is fine, the wait staff is friendly and helpful, and the food is delicious. I try to book this restaurant for all special occasions.

The chopped salad was bland. it needs dressing or more dressing, and the chicken was too dry from grilling in parts. The Cala Mari was outstanding, though.I was disappointed in the sale as was my friend.

Very consistent food and service. One of us had a special- the pork chop which was outstanding- moist and flavorful. The other- the scallops which are always on the menu but with different side dishes. We would highly recommend the restaurant- easy in and out and plenty of parking too

Great food, great service!
I was hoping for it to be a little more quiet. Our waitress was awesome!
She knew the wines, and was helpful when deciding our entrees. We will go back, only next time for lunch, when the noise level is expected to be a little louder.

I ordered the special which happened to be grilled ribeye. It was so salty I could barely eat it. Otherwise it would have been a fabulous steak. Chef really needs to tone down the salt.

came for lunch on weekend. very slow service and food mediocre at best. eggplant parmesan was like a plate of
mush. mostly sauce and drowning in cheese and oil. bread was cold. quinoa salad was absolutely tiny golf ball size! waited a long time for service and interior was dark & uninviting and it was a sunny day! won’t go back.

We frequent it here. Was disappointed this time. My particular meal was dried up and burnt. We wait 35 min after our to sit and has to ask 3 times. I think they forgot because we still ended up sitting in the bar and the service is always mediocre in the bar area.
