Hagis and Squid starters delicious. Burger was excellent.
Lovely waiter. Great service. Airy and spacious restaurant.
I booked a table for 2030 on Saturday night. It wasn't overly busy, but it took about 15 minutes for us to be seated. Our starters arrived before our drinks. I had to send my starter back as the beef skewers were pink and cold. (The plate was hotter than the food, meaning they sat under the hot plate for a while.)
I ordered the mojito, which tasted like minty water with barely any alcohol in it. So I moved on to bottles of beer.
Our main arrived. The burger was lovely, very moist, but the fish was not overly impressive. The selection of cheese was okay, three bits of cheese, six crackers and sauce.
The waiters seemed rushed off their feet even though there could only have been a total of ten tables at the most. It just seemed like everyone was doing everything, and no one had a set job
We were then left for over half an hour at our table before finally decided to go to the bar to get our check and pay. I get that there has been a pandemic, but the service was not amazing. The waiter that was looking after us looked rushed and flustered, but you could see he was trying his best.
A couple that sat across from us were seated about 5 mins after us in the restaurant. When they went to order food, they were then told the kitchen was closed. They were not informed when the kitchen would be closed and originally booked the table to have food. They had their drinks then left.
Overall not impressed with the service giving here. We definitely will not be returning anytime soon.
The quality of the steaks that we ordered wasn’t good, extremely chewy, and the stunning views that had been advertised were non existent unless one was seated at a single table on a walk way at the front of the restaurant.
Good location, lovely setting and staff are welcoming and friendly.
Delicious food and very attentive staff. The Sea Bass particular good accompanied with flavoursome lemon and thyme risotto.
Excellent service, really helpful staff and food was lovely
Great service and food. The restaurant was quiet so we chose to eat in the bar area where there was more atmosphere.
Staff were very polite and helpful. Food was great even in covid times the service was super.
Ate here Sunday evening over 2nd bank holiday. Tasty food and polite staff. View in early evening through huge windows of castle when seated on ground floor level. Nice evening.
Lovely afternoon for some drinks- staff were friendly and service was quick
The food was exceptional and the staff were provided great service!
Would recommend as a date spot :)
I stayed at the hotel years ago when the restaurant was in the top floor with castle views - we ate from either al la carte or the set pre theatre menu And it was stunning.
Sadly the restaurant is now bistro style on the ground floor and much more casual. The food was nice, nothing special though and a much reduced menu - but to be fair this is probably due to Covid. Service was good and swift.
Clean, good food, very pleasant and helpful staff, excellent location
Excellent food and service. A very enjoyable place
Drinks came after our starters, it wasn’t busy at all, mains were terrible, Caesar salad was drowning in dressing it was so inedible!
Great value for money and lovely restaurant and hotel. Staff very helpful.
Delicious food and great value deal. The views of the castle and the Christmas lights outside was gorgeous.
Food was excellent, waiters and waitresses were very polite and nothing was too much trouble, however the management/senior members of the team were abrupt on multiple occasions (we dined here numerous times). To the point where they were actually rather rude- although we appreciate they are under a lot of stress and it is a busy environment, this kind of attitude would not be acceptable in most professions. This vibe was present when being greeted at the door on all 4 occasions and it is such a shame, as the food was overall excellent and the setting was fabulous.
Food good, service excellent and friendly. The ambience of the restaurant was good and it was easy to converse with our fellow diners.
Noted on booking surprise birthday placed at very rear of restaurant beside cutlery alcove. Requested plain burgers was not noted cheese and tomato toastie had no tomato when asked for vinegar was given metal dish with vinegar???? Absolutely no atmosphere
Very good two course meal (including a glass of house wine) from a set menu for £15.
Good choice on menu and a nice touch to have a jug of water on the table when we arrived.
For some reason our main course took a while to come with a number of later diners served before us. Not a major problem - we were on holiday - but perhaps staff should have noticed sooner.
Overall though we enjoyed the meal very much.
Arrived early, advised server we were early, restaurant was empty, told they were ‘ very pushed at the moment could we come back in 15 minutes, there were probably 20 empty tables. When we came back 45 minutes later all bar one of the tables were still empty. We were seated , not asked if we wanted a to order a drink. About 10 minutes later we still hadn’t been asked if we wanted s drink or whether we were ready to order yet there were 3 servers stood chatting at the checkout. I had to save at them to get someone to come and take out order. We ordered and the starter arrived probably in 10 minutes time safely it was before our drink from the bar. All the courses arrived quite quickly , food was nice but in my opinion nothing more than average, was just expecting something more unusual and there weren’t a great deal of choice on the menu. In summary didn’t think service was great, food was ok . We wouldn’t return.
The restaurant was almost empty, what surprised us because all other good restaurants where we tried to dinner before were full and could not accept us without booking. The service was poor and slow. Besides, two waiters came to take our orders, but even so, the bread delayed a lot to appear. The food was good, but that was all. When we left the two waiters came separately with the card machines. One of them did not know how to manage it. Bad experience, indeed.
Very slow service, wrong food served and no time to recook
Lovely staff, gorgeous food.
I would recommend during the festival period as it is in a convenient location.
The food was good, but wouldn’t recommend if you are looking for something special. We were disappointed to be told only residents qualify for the 2 courses for £15 offer. However, it doesn’t say that on their website and we have had this before, during the festival. So I’m not sure what is right.
The fixed price menu only available to residents which was not made clear on the Web site.
The deconstructed bruschetta was very poor both in presentation, taste and price.
Rest of the meal was OK.
Lovely food, menu and setting. The service was friendly and they were trying very hard but there just weren’t enough staff.
For a restaurant attached to a hotel, it was very good. You may lose some individuality but the service was very efficient and friendly. The food was tasty and portion size adequate and we would recommend.
Nice value in Old Town/Grassmarket. Got the 3-course dinner for 20£, which is rare in this area. Though the burger was a bit dry, the fish and chips passed the test and the salmon app was sizable and yummy. The sticky toffee pudding beats the pecan treacle tart ;) Service was attentive. Would come again for the value and the views on Grassmarket!
This is in the Apex hotel. It has a modern setting but full glass windows looking out on a classic street making for good people watching.
We had the pre fix menu meals and they were really good. The Haggis starter and haddock starters were very tasty. I had the flank steak and my wife had the chicken. All prepared very well.
The chocolate pot cake dessert was a nice finish.
All and all a good night out.
We are on a vacation to Scotland. It was our first meal on the day of arrival. We were happy to have a meal without leaving the hotel. Plus it was pouring rain. The Metro is modern feeling and appropriate and affordable for any size family. They offer a value meal, two choices for 15 pounds plus a small glass of house wine, if you so desire. We had two delicious breakfasts there. The pancakes were my best ever. They also have a small upstairs area where we saw a family sit with small children so they would not disrupt the rest of the diners. The staff was very friendly. Nice place.
A phenomenal meal. Brilliant presentation and wonderfully prepared food
Value for money, the meals arrive quickly and are hot and if you have a window seat there is a great view of the castle.
Poor service. I had bought a dinner, bed and breakfast package for my self and three children. The waitress argued with me that my deal meant the children eat free from the kids menu, she wouldn't listen or check my reservation to prove we were all to eat from the main menu. On leaving she apologised as she had made a mistake and given the children the wrong choice. This meant I had over paid for the stay as the kids eat free any way, also as I didn't have the extra budget to buy meals from the main menu the children missed out on what should have been a fancy dinner (they called it ). Very embarrassing as the waitress kept repeating the word free all this in ear shot of other diners.
Reviews posted on open table did not reflect our experience. Food was subpar, service was horrible, and selection was half what the menu suggested. By the time we had received our first drink the meal was already there. Just wanted to get out of the restaurant once we sat down.
My wife had eaten here before approximately 12 years ago and had an amazing meal, now many years later we found ourselves In Edinburgh with our now grown up daughters and looking for somewhere to eat, this came up and we remembered the stunning views over the castle and decided to give it a whirl.
On arrival we were greeted and seated, we elected for cocktails to start and then ordered from the two course menu, two had the haddock and I had the flatiron steak, our youngest went for the burger., the portions were very generous, the food was delicious, truly we have eaten in many fine establishments but this was in the top 1% .
The desserts too were awesome, I had the simple vanilla ice cream, roasted almonds and coated in a chocolate sauce and it was simply divine.
This service was attentive , the cocktails awesome and the good divine.
A very underrated gem in Edinburgh, give it a try I doubt you will be disappointed
Lovely little bistro looking onto the vibrant Grassmarket. Not too ordinary, not too fancy, just right.
Great food and the set menu is very good value for money.
We went on valentines night and they provided us with a free glass of wine each.
