Michael's Little Italy
It was great that they offered dine-in within the limitations of the Virginia restrictions at that time. Everything was done in a way that ensured diners’ safety and the food was excellent. It was a great way to get out for my wife’s birthday. We look forward to going back when they are back to full operations!
I brought two friends visiting from Ohio and one from California. Both had been to Michael's on their last visit and insisted the we go again. They pronounced that Michael's was their favorite DC metro place for fine dining and that the cheese cake was the best they had ever had. I have to agree-- completely and enthusiastically. A++
Outstanding in every way. Michael and company have created a real Old Town gem. The menu, staff, service--- It is A number 1. My favorite Alexandria dining place.
It was the night after Valentine's but they had the same menu. Charming and friendly restaurant with owners so pleasant. Great live piano player - excellent. The appetizers were delicious and beautifully prepared. My entree of the salmon was a bit on the dry side, which was disappointing. However, my friend's osso bucco was wonderful. We will be back especially to try the NY pizza, and to enjoy opera night.
Too expensive for a less than perfect experience. Best calamari app I have ever had but main courses were just average. Very quaint and romantic. Great ambiance. Piano player was a nice addition to our valentines day dinner. When my wife asked for a sugar rim for her drink the waitress claimed that the owner doesnt allow that???? They ended up doing it anyway but that is a very odd policy if its true. It was a cold night and all the doors were old and very drafty. Too expensive for a less than perfect experience.
We sat upstairs close to the piano, which had David(pretty sure that’s his name but I could be wrong, wonderful older gentleman) playing and interacting with us all throughout our meal, he took requests and explained some music history to us, as all of us are music lovers so it was the exact experience we look for. The food is always absolutely outstanding and I have never been disappointed with anything I’ve ordered so far.
We really enjoyed the stracciatella (their soup of the day), the mussels appetizer, the eggplant lasagna and the pappardelle bolognese. We went on a Sunday night when they were having a piano bar evening upstairs, and it was lots of fun!
It was our first visit after passing the restaurant for years and thinking, we need to go there sometime. Restaurant week seemed like the best time. We were a party of 4 and we had a very nice dinner. Our server took good care of us and she was very friendly. It was a Thursday evening so the restaurant wasn't as busy as I imagine it is on the weekend. Next time, we'll have to try to pizza next door.
A little cold - needs heat in the bar/restaurant
Absolutely the worst meal I have had in a long time. I’m Italian and would rather eat at the Olive Garden before coming here ever again. What “Italian” restaurant uses no-boil pasta shells for the daily special?? Really??? And the Chicken Parm - a frozen chicken patty with red sauce??? Come on...
This is one of my favorites in Alexandria. The cool renovated home, exposed brick, and great bar makes this unique. The food is all home made, the desserts, breads and all are made on site and excellent. Portions are just right sized to satisfy hunger yet not over stuff. Plan on several more trips in 2020. The fish is always excellent.
Very underwhelming. The ambiance and piano player made the restaurant feel like a scene out of an old mob film. Definite nice touch. Beyond that you can keep the place. Service was slow and inattentive. The food was just awful. My daughter and I both had the squid ink fettuccine. It had a poached egg on top that was completely over cooked defeating the purpose of a gorgeous runny yolk mixing into the carbonara. Every bite also had large chunks of raw onion in it. The whole dish was just poorly done. My son had linguine and clams that were somehow spicy and simultaneously flavorless. My husband had the chicken parm and was not impressed. The sauce was certainly not like my grandmothers. Tasted like it came from a jar. A cheap jar. Over cooked pasta and breading on the chicken was bland. They also upcharged for every little thing. Every soda or juice the kids ordered was on the bill. My son asked for spaghetti for instead of their fresh spinach capellini and we got charged $6 for that. I could have bought 3 boxes of pasta in a store for $6. Insane. Very disappointed overall. We went back to our hotel and scrounged for something to eat at 11:00 at night because we all left La Trattoria starving.
Always try to visit LaT when we are in Alexandria. Food is always spot on, and the service is prompt and friendly.
Highlight of this visit was the homemade lobster ravioli. May be the best I’ve ever had. If you are lucky enough to be at LaT when they have it, do yourself a favor and order it!
Went for Christmas Eve dinner with my husband. The staff was great with two phone calls prior to the dinner to let us know they were doing the traditional 7 Fishes dinner, but would still have their pasta selections a la carte if we did not want to do the planned dinner. When we got to the restaurant their was just the night’s special menu with only three pasta options and our server clearly was only prepared to handle the pre-programmed choices. The food was good, however the experience was not what we imagined and it took over 2.5 hr to eat just a salad and main course since we had to flag our server for when we were ready to order and finally needed to get the check.
Our waitress was very personable and patient with our young grandchildren. Food was excellent. Enjoyed the live piano music.
Table of four, with appetizers, entrees, wine, and dessert: everything was excellent except the Veal Francesca, which was too tough and unflavorful. Especially loved the fresh pesto with the bread, calamari, and lasagna.
Our server was okay. The food was a disappointment. I had the pasta with clams. I had six clams, one was not open. There was some sort of diced protein on top. When we asked the server what it was, she asked the chef. The chef told her it was the clams. I have never seen clams diced in perfect squares!
I hadn't been to La Trattoria in a long time and I am not sure I will go back.
We arrived early and had to eat in the bar. While the servers were super nice and helpful, they had their hands full in the bar Saturday night.
Food was very good. We’ll go another time when their dining room is open.
Appetizers and drinks were great, particularly the burrata bowl. However dinner was Meh. Expected more flavor.
For some reason the restaurant was quiet the night we went! The food, service, and restaurant was outstanding and the pianist was absolutely outstanding! We 3 had an amazing time!!
We had a perfect evening sitting by the cozy fire. Love the atmosphere: candlelight, fire and Sinatra music and the food was delicious!!. Our waitress was very nice and accommodated all of our needs. I recommend highly. The value is excellent. Even for a large party of 10 our bill was extremely reasonable. We love this restaurant and we will be back many times!
The food was outstanding, but we were there for over an hour before we received our food. Unfortunately, we were not the only other patrons with this problem. We saw other diners being forced to request their food to go because of the delays. Not sure if this is typical, but it was disappointing.
Cute spot in Alexandria with live pianist when I was there on Friday night. The food took a long time to come out though, about an hour.
Intimate, delicious, personal - fantastic dining experience!
So disappointing. We enjoy a new restaurant every couple weeks which is a lot of fun. Bellisimo, Hamrocks, Vermillion. So good and perfect at every level.
La Trattoria was very loud, the service was very poor, and the food wasn’t close. The piano player was great-still too loud for that small room. The 2 guys that came out to sing at around 8 just added to how disappointing this place was. Not inexpensive by any means. It was a one and done for us. We won’t go back. If you want to enjoy a special night with incredible food and service, check out Vermillion in Alexandria.
Love to go there for the Music and open mic. the food is fantastic. love it. ate the egg plant Parmesan and it was wonderful
Super cool place with an amazing atmosphere and great food
My wife and I are regular visitors to La Trattoria. We keep going back because we always have an excellent meal, the ambiance is excellent, the piano adds the perfect touch, and the staff is great. The owners are always onsite Saturday evenings and really work to make the customers feel at home. La Trattoria is our favorite restaurant in Old Town, which is saying a lot since there are so many great restaurants in Old Town.
We dined outside on a beautiful night. Had great service. Our pizza came out missing a few key toppings, but they were apologetic and even comped a beer!
Awesome food, great staff, and an excellent experience
The cocktails were great, as were the main dishes. There's not much else to recommend beyond that. Upon arrival, we were told we wouldn't be seated until our reservation time. When we pointed out that it WAS our reservation time, we were sent to the bar to wait. As we had theater tickets, we decided we'd eat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and made a good drink but we were taken to our seats, assured that there'd be no problem with our timing. As we'd reviewed the menus while waiting, we placed our order immediately with the friendly waitress, noting again our theater tickets. Our fried artichokes came out immediately but if they were, in fact, fried, it had been earlier in the day. They were cool and soggy, not hot and crispy, as one would expect. We now knew why they were able to be served immediately. We then waited 40 minutes for our dinners. They were, frustratingly, excellent but we had no time to enjoy them. As the plates were put down, we asked for our check and proceeded to plow through some wonderful pasta and osso bucco while throwing back our wine and dashing for the door. With so many options in Old Town, it'd be hard to justify returning to such a mixed experience.
Great food, outstanding service and a wonderful piano filled dinner experience. It was like we were regulars.
I've always want to try La Trattoria and wish now I'd tried it years ago. It's now our favorite in town. Everything was perfect.
Excellent restaurant. Great ambiance, attentive service.
Trattoria is a gem. Nice change from the King St strip. Delicious fresh pasta entrees and other mains with side portions of pasta or risotto. Our group had gnocchi, linguini with clams, Sicilian salmon. Generous and beautifully prepared entrees. We had cold calamari salad, fried artichokes, Cesar salad, cucumber soup. All very contemporary and upscale Italian food. Their bread is excellent, too. Servers are pleasant, but forgot a soup spoon and brought incorrect appetizer at first, but quickly remedied those issues.
Made reservations for the monthly opera night. I know the performer and his family very well and was thrilled to dine. (LOVE the bagels on Saturdays).
*born and raised on Long Island so I miss REAL bagels, feeling particularly lucky you’re the first one that pops up on best bagels on Old Town
Food was absolutely delicious. Packed house, so trying to understand why service was so SLOW. Definitely worth the wait because the gnocchi was superb!
Just took 2 hrs for a 3 meal course. Not what I was expecting, but the music and entertainment was stellar. My only suggestion is to add more courses of food like wine, cheese and fruit to keep food on the table as you’re enjoying the performances. I will be back in the hopes that service will reflect better timing 🌸
We had a great meal here. Food was delicious although it took a while for our dinner to come. Would not have been a problem except we were heading to the theatre. Still made our show with time to spare.
The food was absolutely delicious, the portions appropriate, and the service was friendly and efficient.
When we arrived for our reservation we were directed to sit at the bar as there were no tables available. Okay, we’ll go with it. The restaurant is small and very charming. Our server was clearly experienced, however, her demeanor and lackluster service, pitiful. We are three family members who see each other infrequently and were very happy to be enjoying each other’s company. In no way would we allow the attitude of this server ruin our evening. With so many fantastic restaurants in the area these days, I would be hard pressed to return to La Trattoria in Old Town.
We have made La Trattoria our Saturday night restaurant. We go there every Saturday night we’re not out of town. The owners, Michael and Kelsey, have created a wonderful venue for a perfect evening of enjoyment. My wife and I try different items from the menu almost every time, and everything we’ve had is always excellent. Our servers are always attentive. Dine in the piano rooms upstairs and David, on the piano all evening, is excellent and provides the perfect musical ambiance for a great evening. He even plays requests and I swear there isn’t a song he doesn’t know. On many Saturday nights, Michael will join in later in the evening and sing a few songs, too. All-in-all, La Trattoria is is a gem in Old Town Alexandria and the perfect escape for an excellent dining experience.
