Well I’m not one to slander a business but after reading a great Wright up in a magazine and reading many online reviews thought we’d give it a try.
We are on the 1st floor, to begin the service from the waiter was shambolic we arrived early and were seated promptly began to order some water and a bottle of wine which for some reason took our waiter an unbelievable amount of time and after two prompts still no water. Eventually got our drinks and so began wait on food.
Working in the industry I know bad nights happen etc but 40 minutes waiting for food with no check back or any acknowledgement of a wait time suggested. So after 46 min we get our food no apology or any explanation from the server.
So we ordered the fish platter at £50 sounded like a great choice most of it was cooked well scallops and mussels beautifully cooked as for the rest soggy calamari as was dipped into the juices from the mussels. The rest was poor over cooked fish and old prawns mushy and still wth the roe as no mention of that they were served as such on menu.
So we mention this to our sever he the. shrugs and walks away in working in hospitality for over 15 years I’ve never seen anything like it. On attracting the server that appeared to be managing the shift we explanined the problems and to be told sorry we have been busy and offered more mussels to compensate but by that point we have been waking 15 min to speak to someone and wanted to get out of there as it literally wasted our evening. I was quite frankly frustrated and didn’t want to cause a scene so we went to the bar to settle up and raise my issues the waitress in charge loosely apologised and began to offer to remove the service charge which was optional anyhow. Overall I was shocked at the lack of complaint handling or even communication I would have been happy with an apology and removal of the prawns but it was made an issue by rudeness and lack of service. Shame as it’s a nice venue
Very pricey food and wine. good quality though. Some dishes are gastropub level but others more restaurant quality. Wine list comes in 25 minimum bottles (approx) for 12-15 wine, not a markup uncommon in UK / OX but still a shame. Overall pleasant evening nonetheless, very standout personal service
Superb hot fish platter and amazing service from Mark.
Had a great evening with a couple of Ozzie friends we me on a cruise to Norway last week. They said they loved fish, siminvited them up to Oxford to see the sights. We have been to No 1 Ship Street before. Had a great meal, they loved the lobster and gin cocktail. Great night.
Returning again on 17th to celebrate my son in laws and my birthday, looking forward to it
Disappointed Generally , having had No 1 highly recommended we felt let down , we ordered the fish platter that consisted of a bowl of mussels and Prawns with not a lot else ( oh bread and chips ) . The Service charge added to the bill, thought this was wrong .
My sister and I met here for lunch and a catch up. We shared the fish platter which was amazing. We will definitely be back. The gentleman upstairs we think ‘Ben’ was very good we felt very well looked after. Thank you.
Amazing food, service and atmosphere. Hard to find in one package but a lovely find in central Oxford!
I took my wife for a pre Valentines meal at No1, it was the first time we had been there, having read about the review in the Oxford Mail. The cocktails we had were superb, as was the wine we chose. We had eaten during the day, so we’re jot that hungry, so shared the calamari which had a crispy dusting with succulent rings inside. We both had the deal of fish and chips, a bargain at £7, it cans piping hot, great batter and lovely chips on a bed of mixed salad. Couldn’t manage a pud. It was early, very wet outside and at the time were the only ones dining. However, more couples arrived as we were leaving. Great restaurant, with a charming bar lady and waiting staff. Ambience was really good with music we love.
So good we have booked again and we are taking my daughter and son in law next month
Lovely bar-restaurant, seafood platter was excellent and service was attentive but not over the top. Not a cheap evening but we both had a fab time!
Family get together. Excellent food at a reasonable price.
Excellent seafood on upper floor. Very friendly service. Nice ambience. Will definitely be back.
We had an amazing meal, with excellent oysters & some wonderful wine. The staff were so helpful & accommodating, we had an amazing meal! Would thoroughly recommend & we will be back soon.
We ate at the first floor restaurant and had excellent oysters as a starter. For our main we shared a hot fish platter, which was mainly moules with a bit of fish, tiny bit of crab, a scallop each and prawns. Not cheap at £50 for two. The menu was limited. Downstairs there is a wider menu and it may be worth giving this a try. Service was very friendly and helpful.
Great food, great ambience, great service. Really loved it and will be going back.
Booked a table last minute for Saturday evening 20.30. A perfectly situated restaurant with a great atmosphere and decor. The service and food was nothing bit excellent
Fabulous cocktails and great tapas. Very romantic and fun -- a perfect date night!
