What a find! Wonderful menu, lobster, plaice, burgers and pork belly all very well received. very reasonable win list. Loved the copper tables. Terrific service; professional warm, welcoming. We will definitely return.
Fab set lunch, great food, lovely place, highly recommended!
I had not been before, both food and wine excellent
Very lovely place with exceptional food and wine! Would certainly recommend to visit. Also very kind personnel.
Food was amazing and the waiter we had was hilarious and kind. A bit on the pricey end - surf and turf increased price from 100 to 120 pounds which is steep!
Excellent service, delicious food, lovely atmosphere and amazing Espresso Martinis!
So pleased with visited this delightful gem of a restaurant in Oxford. Beautiful from the outside and tastefully decorated inside - such a joy when considering the soulless places nearby. The service was exceptional from the start through to departure. Food was amazing and rather good value. Definitely will return!
The pork belly is quite good, as well as the triple cooked chips, very nice.
However, the special brill fish is just ordinary. Fish is certainly over cooked.
The raw blue fin tuna special is not good, too much sour and really fishy smell.
The service is really good!
Service was good, food delicious and lovely ambience.
A wonderful place to celebrate an anniversary. We were put into a little corner and it felt connected to the rest of the restaurant but more intimate. The drinks and food was great and our server was lovely the whole time. Would definitely come back!
Perfect pre theatre meal.
Superb steak. Fresh fish beautiful
Lovely restaurant. Excellent food ambiance and service. Will return
We had an excellent lunch at No. 1 yesterday. Absolutely delicious cauliflower veloute, pumpkin risotto, sausages with lentils and aioli. The portions weren't huge but sufficient and very high quality.
The service was excellent too -- friendly and helpful but not obtrusive -- and the decor and ambience were very nice.
The only reason I am not giving it five stars was that the level of noise of people talking at other tables made it difficult for us to hear ourselves talk. Probably due to the fact that there are no soft furnishings, tablecloths, etc. to dampen the noise, but that is true in many places nowadays.
Overall the food, atmosphere and service were of the highest standard and we will definitely be returnng.
Finding a decent place to have lunch in Oxford was not as easy as one might think. Quite a few places were closed, others had limited menus, some had received a string of bad press. I did some research on the internet and No1 Ship Street had received favourable reviews. I booked a table for 3 persons for 17th November. We were greeted by a friendly Maitre d'hotel, and seated in a quiet and comfortable corner of the atmoshphereic downstairs brasserie. The restaurant was brisk but not overcrowded. The waiter assigned to our table was friendly, engaging and attentive. We opted for the set two/three course lunch and were not disappointed. The food was exceptional...well prepared, innovative, and sensible portion sizes (ie not excessive, which is always off putting.) Moreover, it was incredibly good value, at £16.95 per head for three courses, which permitted us to induldge a little with the drinks and not incur an excessive bill. On the whole this was a very pleasant experience indeed, and I would heartily recommend this restaurant to anybody looking for a relaxed, quality and not over priced venue for lunch in Oxford.
The food was distinctive and well served. The fish special had a spicy sauce which to some extent masked the flavour. The sirlion was lacking on flavour
We really enjoyed eating here. The food was extremely good, and not just a few of the dishes but consistently across everything we ordered. Considered, balanced flavours, clearly high quality ingredients and beautifully executed.
Very good service too - just the right degree of attentiveness without being intrusive.
And considering the quality it was excellent value. A real find
As indicated, the food and service was very good. We were seated next to the wine rack nr the door to the kitchen/bar - constant passing of waiting staff to/from the kitchen. The table rocked every time someone passed. For this reason we would not recommend or return.
Wonderful staff and delicious food. Would definitely recommend
Really enjoyed our meal last night. I would recommend it although it is definitely for a special occasion - I'm keen to try their set lunches too.
Absolutely fabulous. Great food, great service, friendly people. The quality of the ingredients and the presentation were first rate. This restaurant presents itself as a first class establishment and it totally lives up to it. Loved it!!
Excellent selection of meals - devilled kidneys hooray!
Food poor vegetables chips cold !
Fish broth bland !
Food was a little patchy, not what we've experienced at 1 ship st before sadly. Excellent starters and wonderful vegetarian mains were let down by a cote de boeuf that was rather cold by the time it arrived at the table, and with lukewarm sauce. When you're paying this price for a dish it's inexcusable.
Really good service from our waiter but sadly neither he or the manger dealt well with a group of three track suit clad lads who arrived very drunk, f'd and c'd their way through another few cocktails, and ended up smashing glasses, abusing the staff and behaving really appallingly. We left early because of this and felt terrible for the young loving couple having to sit next to this grim display. On our way out we told the manager he should have either refused them entry (it was pretty obvious how drunk they were) or should have called the police, neither his customers or his staff should have to deal with this.
Will we go again? I'm not sure, I used to go regularly before covid and we'd really looked forward to a return, our experience last night leaves us wary.
Really good. Felt welcome as soon as we walked in.
Staff recommendations were excellent and the food was perfect and the star of the evening.
Overall an excellent experience!
Excellent taste of food! Surprisingly we had ordered several cocktails drinks and they all very genuine.
It's got a good atmosphere, lovely and attentive staff, and good food - what more could you ask for a lunch with someone you haven't seen for years???
We wanted a fish lunch and found this restaurant a good choice. The plaice and Cornish hake were excellent. Restaurant was a little cold, probably due to the recent drop in temperature. Excellent range of wine.
A lovely lunch in a buzzy bistro atmosphere. We felt comfortable in choosing different ‘sized’ meals and the food and service was excellent.
Sadly the last visit to No. 1 Ship Street wasn’t the most enjoyable one.
I waited at the entrance to be greeted however waitresses just pushed past me to go up and down the stairs and the man in the phone just looked at me then looked down. When he finished his call he then took another call and continued to ignore me.
I had to actually grab the waitress when she tried to pass me and ask her to acknowledge me!
In my booking I asked for a table downstairs how we we were placed on the worst table upstairs which was hidden around the corner. It was exceptionally cold there and we did ask a few times to turn the heating on but we were told she couldn’t.
The menu choices were poor. The portions were minute and the quality of food was basic.
We were often forgotten as were were hidden in the corner. This is not what we had experienced last year and it was evident standards had slipped drastically.
There was no soap in the toilets so I had to tell the waitress about this.
At the end of our meal the staff made it very clear they wanted us to leave by loudly moving tables and chairs around, scraping them across the floor and regularly staring over at us.
Not a very comfortable or pleasurable experience in general really from the moment I walked in when we left which was a real pity.
This was my first visit and cannot praise it enough. We had the set lunch menu which is great value for money and excellent quality. The service was very good very attentive, polite without being in your face. A lovely atmosphere with even lovelier staff. We will definitely be going back
Exciting options fulfilling our highest expectations. Bisque outstanding. Collins was amazing and house Espresso pure invention. We shall return with most favored friends.
Incredible food and equally as incredible service! Very understanding to our lateness due to traffic and closed Westgate parking. Cannot fault a single aspect of our visit!
There were six of us, my meal (the burger), was perhaps the worst burger I have had but the others enjoyed their food. For what you got the price was high, especially the side dishes.
Had a lovely graduation celebration here in the upstairs room which felt quite private and had a lovely feel to it. Service was prompt and friendly and the set lunch enjoyable though a little short on veg/salad. Would recommend.
Brilliant food, attentive and funny waiter! I wish I had left room for pudding!
Very posh and nice food
Espeically the oyster , really amazing
Great food and great value.
However it should be possible to get through a set lunch menu in under an hour though to allow it to happen in ones lunch hour. We managed only two courses of the three course menu and it took over an hour.
Made to feel welcome on arrival. Staff very helpful with the menu. In fact very good service throughout. Not an extensive set menu so had the A La Carte. Would visit again
I can't eat onions or garlic. They were extremely helpful in advising me on what I could and couldn't have, and offered to make alternative versions of things on the menu just for me. This is extremely rare. The food was outstanding - I had an amazing whole Brixham plaice - and, though not cheap, good value given the quality. This is serious food carefully prepared with attention and thought and a lovely front of house manner.
A lovely evening with very enjoyable food and wine.
BUT - the stairs down to the loos are treacherous. You really must put in a banister, or there will be an accident.
