No1 Ship Street
Fine dining was not our experience. It is an averagely good brasserie with an overly complex menu and portion sizes which are on the meagre side. The staff are young, friendly and quite attentive. The 15% service charge is a customer-exploiting rip off and ought to be illegal. It is up to a customer to decide whether the service and experience is deserving of an additional payment. Will not be revisiting. Sadly.
Great food..service..staff...ambience..one of my favourite restaurants in Oxford.
Lovely lovely place, food was great. Drink just as good.
great specials with shellfish and seafood plus an imaginative standard menu. We will eat there again. Mackerel starter superb, halibut main a bit over-cooked but delicious nevertheless. house white and red excellent.
The ambience is fantastic the staff very professional. The food is pretentious.
We came here 2 Oct and tried the set menu. We thought the food was tasty, well presented and different. .
Returning today 6 weeks later we expected to see a different Set menu. Exactly the same? No change at all?
So we felt pushed to choose from the A la Carte..
The chef is trying far to hard. The potted terrine arrived with burnt toast, black all down one side which was inedible. The potted terrine was dry and tasteless. It looked grey and green (cold peas) and un appetising.
The lamb shank was dry, stripped off the bone and moulded into a cone shape. It was tasteless and very dry served with a pale insipid gravy. It arrived in a bowl served with cockles. No lovely succulent lamb at best with a deep rich gravy...perhaps some hint of mint. thankfully we added green beans (extra) which were very tasty. I had to ask for more gravy as it was just sticking to my mouth. It arrived in a small pot insipid pale liquid which was equally tasteless?? How is that even possible. I ended up leaving 1/2 the meal.
We didn’t want to risk how the chef could muck up a dessert. We left and went off searching somewhere else to have a desert I mean we were celebrating a 60th birthday!! The meal cost £94! We both had a stater, main and a glass of red house wine each.
Value for money.. No! Coming back again ..sadly as it’s a beautiful place...No!
Remember yr roots! Good food should be .... Well cooked. Tasty.
Sadly the chef is letting down a beautiful place and excellent professional waiting staff.
Food was good, but not spectacular for the price. Beer selection is non-existent, and service pretty mediocre.
My wife and I ate there on Saturday 9th November to celebrate her birthday.
Dining room was small and cosy but catered for 2 large groups who were both very loud. Not a problem but absolutely not conducive to a quiet, romantic date!
Food was good: quality, presentation & cooking were all excellent.
£144 for two appetizers , 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 puddings plus an average quality bottle of rose was reasonable if a little pricey.
Didn't appreciate the 12.5% service charge, which really isn't optional & is more than we would have given out of choice
Overall we enjoyed the evening but probably wouldn't go back.
Absolutely great time, attentive service and food was delicious. Bit noisy during peak times. Will come again.
Great experience with flawless service complimented with great food.
Wonderful all around experience. Staff suggested food choices were most delicious. Warm and active atmosphere but not too loud for conversation. Highly recommend!!
In a world full of franchise and chain restaurants (some of which are of course very good) it is becoming more and more difficult to find an independent restaurant to support. No 1 is a delight in so many ways, service is professional, efficient and friendly. Waiters had thorough knowledge of the menu and wine list and answered all questions confidently. A lively but not over noisy atmosphere with a good mix of couples, families and tables of friends creating a very welcoming vibe. Decor strikes the balance between cosy and upmarket Parisian brasserie. We had a pre-theatre booking so did not have to feel anxious about the 'second sitting' situation, but neither did we have to rush through our courses. The food itself is, and should be, the most important element and here we were not disappointed: a simple yet tempting menu making a decision difficult - for all of us the specials board won the day with oysters, lobster and rib of beef followed by a perfect creme brulee. By no means inexpensive (but we did all choose the most luxurious courses on the menu!) - but for this level of quality nor was it over priced. It is just as well we do not live in Oxford, otherwise I know No. 1 Ship Street would become a dangerous habit!
Fantastic food, wine and service. All courses were delicious. The decor and atmosphere is lovely too and we can’t wait to come again
My very best culinary experience in Oxford
Beuatiful venue and excellent quality food. Great atmosphere which really made for a special experience overall. Would definitely recommend.
The room upstairs much quieter than the main one downstairs.(Hopefully we were upstairs). Ribs were very good, as well as wine by the glass. My sons loved the cookie dough dessert! Yet...burgers were a bit overcooked and the creme brulee a bit too liquid.
Excellent service and overall very good evening
our first visit and we will go again. the service was really first rate, the food delicious and presented beautifully. wine list great and the bill was not a nasty surprise
nice cosy place so for is, its up there as a place to go again... loved it
Great little place. Busy and good food.
A great restaurant with lovely interior, brill service and fab food! In a great part of Oxford! Will def return!
First visit for a while, but it was an excellent experience. The waiting staff were friendly and helpful and there was a warm greeting on arrival. The food could not be faulted as evidenced by all our empty plates! I would thoroughly recommend a visit!
More waiting staff required.
We had to wait too long for drinks and our food.
Side dishes came before our mains.
Our food was very good when eventually came.
Tasty pheasant dish and excellent plaice. Very busy early Friday evening, but service relatively quick and pleasant.
Lovely calm atmosphere, superb service and wonderful food. Try the mac n cheese with truffle it’s delicious.
Absolutely loved it. My husband and I went for a romantic dinner. The food was outstanding, the setting perfect and our waitress was the loveliest girl who was super attentive. Can’t fault it and cannot wait until we are in Oxford again so we can return.
Our waitress was so helpful. Food was great! Scallops and pork belly was divine! Highly recommend this place
Refined cuisine at an affordable price. Attentive service.
Good food, slick service and thoroughly recommended. I don't think No.1 Ship Street will win any Michelin stars but this is still top-end, well-executed, classic bistro food. You struggle to find that in Oxford in 2019. And it was a joy to eat out on a busy Saturday night and not have to wait forever to eat or to catch anyone's eye. Sure we'll be back for more.
This restaurant's ambiance is all one can ever ask for.
The best restaurant that I have yet found in Oxford
We went here based on previous reviews and weren't disappointed. The restaurant was pretty quiet as we'd gone pre-theatre early evening.
We were given a full walk-through of the various specials and I opted for halibut with fennel. The halibut was beautifully cooked, probably the best I've tasted. It was served with fennel cooked in orange, which sounded strange but was delicious.
I'd definitely recommend!
We were in Oxford for a couple of days and went pre-theatre and had the a la carte menu. All courses were delicious, the lobster bisque appetiser fantastic as well as the Brixham sole with a brown shrimp and caper sauce. The wine was great and loves that we were allowed to try before we bought the bottle. Will definitely go back again when next in Oxford.
Nice ambiance, quiet restaurant with friendly service and fairly classical flavours and dishes competently prepared.
A really good find - excellent fresh seafood and attentive service and reasonably priced considering te standard of the food.
Very good experience throughout the evening. Made feel welcome from the start, lovely atmosphere, very good food.
Well worth a visit.
We had an excellent meal here last Monday. The food was absolutely outstanding, the staff were super attentive and the ambience was just lovely - cosy, atmospheric and very welcoming. Thank you!
We had a great lunch here and highly recommend it. The Sunday lunch was really good value and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly.
Stunning food, great staff and service. Was sad the decor was showing clear signs of repair. Bathrooms were very dirty, sinks very water marked and no soap. Toilet roll holders has caused visible damage to walls. Paintwork showing grease and marks.
I am sure when first fine it was quite the venue, sadly it let down the great food and very good staff
Great food, lovely atmosphere, service initially good but had to wait too long to pay and had to get up and ask for them to get the card machine.
Also £26 service charge for a party for four which was automatically applied to the bill .....hmmm, they did remove but it left us feeling a little disappointed, let the diner decide on the service charge/ tip
( which we did leave, but not £26!!)
We were staying the weekend in Oxford and had booked No1 Ship Street based on a quick search on the Internet. What a great choice!! The food was excellent, as was the service, and the whole evening was very enjoyable. I can highly recommend the Brill with Lobster Risotto which was superb
A cut above the usual Oxford fare. Good, rather different menu supplemented with specials. Lots of fish, which always appeals. Attractive wine list with many at very reasonabl prices. .
Went on Wednesday with a friend to talk business actually talked about what a great restaurant, food ambiance service all 5 star 🌟 would go again!
