Food was fantastic and service was excellent. Nice relaxed atmosphere in a lovely setting. Will be returning.
Knocked a star off the food as my husband felt his fish soup was "a bit too thick", but that's just a minor niggle. Everything else was very good. My fish was very fresh; friend's lobster was "one of the best she's ever had"; chocolate pave sublime.
There's a fun atmosphere, original decor, good service. Great to have somewhere in Oxford that makes the journey into town worthwhile - just try to avoid approaching the restaurant via dirty, litter-strewn Cornmarket and head instead along Ship St from the Turl.
They were wonderful when it came to surprising my friend for her birthday and even let us stay there later. Absolutely wonderful food and service.
The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff very, very helpful. Ship street is definitely raising its bar very high. Superb!
The food is surprisingly good. Oysters, for example, were among best have had anywhere. The rest of the experience is slightly out of kilter. The setting is more like a pub, and the kitchen is too slow for a lunch place right in the heart of the city. When asked why simple dishes were taking so long, server replied they were busy. This is never a good answer, especially when it's obviously not really true!
We were in Oxford and wanted a spot for a nice dinner. We came across No 1 Ship Street and it looked good, so we decided to give it a try. We were very pleased that we did. The food was delicious and there is a nice variety to satisfy everyone. The service was great. The ambiance is very comfortable and inviting. We cannot wait to return to Oxford and visit No 1 Ship Street again.
Booked to celebrate my sons graduation. The service was very informal and friendly, great recommendations for the food. Which was excellent.
Have been here before and always enjoyed the high quality food and good service
This is a little gem hidden in the centre of Oxford. The dishes are beautifully crafted and locally sourced, the ambience is intimate and romantic (just a little noisy at busy times), and the service is really friendly. There are also some great cocktails, and even more in the bar upstairs!
Me and my partner had dinner here for his birthday and the food was absolutely delicious! The service was friendly and generous with a complimentary glass of wine and a candle in the desert for my partners birthday.
Lovely cosy, quiet, romantic atmosphere and unreal cooking!
Lovely meal here on Saturday, friendly reception on arrival despite our running a little late. Staff great, food fresh and interesting.
Independent restaurant with a lovely vibe, only small criticism would be that the wine list seems a little over priced but food was incredible value.
Restaurant which occupies what used to be a 'bog standard' café in central Oxford. The interior has been sorted out with an upstairs bar and seafood option part of the restaurant with a more bistro focussed section on the ground floor. Tables are close, but not to an extent where you feel uncomfortable.
Partner, who is a foodie, thought the menu offered only limited options but there was a decent, if not an excessive amount of choice. After starters, she went of a fish option and I (not a foodie) had a rather good burger.
Wine list was a bit pricey but had an excellent Malbec for less than £30, which is decent mark up, but that seems to be the norm for restaurants in the UK.
Sorbet and coffee to finish off. Total with pre-meal cocktails that was probably an indulgence too far (but very nice) was £122. Which ain't cheap, but for the location, food and wine (+ cocktails) that did not seem 'over the top'. Probably more of an event location in the evening, but told decent lunch deals during the day. Worth a visit.
Really excellent food, attentive service and decent wine list. Fairly good value, three courses and two glasses of wine for £50 a head. Would thoroughly recommend.
No 1 Ship Street has just changed over to its summer menu. Although the word 'salad' does not really appear on this menu, several of the dishes are in fact salads, so fear not! Everything I have had so far has been absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. On Monday I tried a Special of John Dory fillets on pappardelle with a gorgeous roasted vegetable sauce. It was divine. My companion had roasted pork belly with apple sauce and various vegetables, mouth-wateringly tender and succulent. One of my favourite things about this restaurant is the concept that you can have booze for pudding. I had my favourite frozen champagne cocktail - a drink so delicious you will think you have died and gone to heaven. Some of the dishes are delightfully adventurous, but they still have excellent staples such as beefburgers and fish and chips (fish and chips is half price in the upper floor from Monday to Thursday - not only delicious but fantastic value at £7). Service is friendly without being intrusive, and the ambience of this beautifully decorated Georgian building is relaxed and comfortable. Thoroughly recommended.
Great food and a wonderful reasonably priced wine
Delicious food, excellent customer service and a great vibe
Delicious food, can’t fault my three courses. It was a limited menu so not a huge choice but my table of four thoroughly enjoyed our meal, my only criticism is the price of the drinks - expensive!
A very pleasant setting and on a hot Bank Holiday Monday, a very welcome ceiling fan. The menu has something for everyone and I particularly liked having items that can be a starter or main i.e. small or large. Friendly staff and good service with food cooked to perfection.
Lovely restaurant in the centre of Oxford, would thoroughly recommend.
This is a lovely place that offers something so far from the many chains. The menu is quite minimal but clearly well thought out. Quite a range of prices with the burger being £14 and the surf and turf special £100 (for two). Waiting staff were really lovely and we had an amazing bottle of red wine for £38 (South African). Would go back, but need to pay more attention to prices!
very nice welcome at Sunday lunch. Service a little slow for us as we had to get a away for an afternoon performance. Might be worth checking at the start if your guests are time restricted
The food was out of this world exquisite and the service was exceptional. We had the frogs legs to start with the garlic and parsley dipping sauce. It was amazing! Followed by the rib of beef sharing platter with a whole lobster, the beef melted in the mouth and the lobster was cooked to perfection and it was the perfect portion size. The atmosphere was cozy and buzzing. The owner is a bit of a hottie to boot! Five stars and we have all booked to go back in May already.
Lovely experience and Oxford needs a few more places like this. Appreciated the time to have an aperitif and consider the menu. Service was efficient, friendly (but not too much) and informative. The smoked mussels were fabulous, the rabbit delicious and the dessert made us laugh. Keep doing what you're doing!
It was our first time at No1. The restaurant is very comfortable and relaxing. The menu and specials board were excellent. I had the oysters and plaice both of which were extremely fresh, well prepared and cooked. The service was efficient and prompt.
I will be returning.
Lovely evening with cocktails in the bar upstairs first
A nice dining experience. Menu offered good options, food was prepared to a very good standard and good portions, service was friendly and meal was well paced, not rushed. Will definitely return.
Excellent food and service, offering something a little different from other restaurants in the centre of Oxford.
One of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time: every dish - and we sampled a lot! - was tasty and attractive, perfectly seasoned, and in most cases generously proportioned for the money. The staff were knowledgable and amiable, without being intrusive, and the decor is right up my street. Highly recommended.
Great food and good service. The grilled beef platter is amazing. This place deserves to be a lot busier than it currently is. It's quite pricey though.
Excellent surroundings complemented by good food and good service
Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here, our first visit. Tasty mussels in delicious creamy sauce with fresh bread. Good wine and very good service. Good table with plenty of room and we weren't hassled to eat and run. We recommend and will return.
A stylish, atmospheric restaurant in the heart of Oxford that offers a sumptuous menu and well-chosen wine list. Can't wait to go back again!
Second visit and loved it again. Service was efficient and polite. Food was tasty and creative. Would go again!
Lovely place with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Quite pricy but the food was beautifully made and it was a lovely place to go on an evening.
Really great evening at No 1 Ship Street - staff were friendly, warm and attentive, the Ground Floor had a classy yet cosy vibe to it and the menu had a good selection at a reasonable cost. Would definitely recommend for a special meal out.
Superb fish and meat dishes with excellent vegatables all arriving nicely cooked and piping hot. We were four celebrating Mother’s Day and enjoyed the experience very much. The lobster bisque, smoked trout salad starter, and fruit brulee and chocolate puddings were especially noteworthy. Good ambience, and service was efficent with room to improve on smiles and warmth/interest. Food was good value but wine list expensive with limited choice. Overall a lovely time and would definitely book again.
The menu choice is quite limited and has a very wide range of prices between dishes - special for two at £100; burger at £14. Rather limited wine list with too few lower-priced wines. Great food, service and ambience.
My daughters and I had a very happy Not-quite-Mothering-Sunday lunch at No.1 Ship Street. The service was charming and friendly, perfectly timed. The roast beef was perfectly cooked and so tasty that there were empty plates all round! No.1 is effortlessly smart yet chic and our table was perfect for easy conversation. I will definitely go back to try more of the menu.
Great cocktails upstairs. Friendly staff and fabulous good with 3 vegetarian options.
Lovely warm atmosphere despite the snowy weather. Menu had a good selection, everything was delicious.
