Excellent food and a lovely atmosphere. Very warming decor and competent friendly service.
Great spot for a romantic evening out
Went for a birthday treat - and it was a treat. Interesting menu, perfectly cooked, presented and served. I'm not experienced enough to compare with major gourmet menus - but it made the cost, not cheap, more than acceptable.
Wonderful location in that it is a reasonably priced restaurant in central Oxford in a lovely building. Starched napkins and even the tap water elegantly served. How's that for class? We went at 6.30 on a Monday, which must be the lowest point in the restaurant week, and 5 tables at least had guests already. Quiet background music so you could hear yourself speak. We had buttery dover sole - excellent. Staff were charming, attentive but discreet. We will definitely return soon.
We arrived a little early for our 7.30pm table so went upstairs for a drink after confirming someone would come and let us know when the table was available. Eventually we gave up waiting and one of our group ventured down to find that they had been waiting for us ! Food was all very good but unfortunately our waiter did not seem very experienced and we had to constantly remind him of items we had asked for. Everyone has to start out so I would defiantly come back or recommend this restaurant to others but would some hope the management provide more training training for inexperienced staff.
Ground floor of ship street is a cosy and well decorated restaurant, staff were knowledgable and friendly. We were seated in the corner, and as someone with a large medical device as it filled up i did find it quite hard to get out to the bathroom etc squeezing past tables, so i would advise anyone with a disability to call ahead to make sure you get a seat with adequate room for you.
The food was delicious, and reasonable for the high quality produce, the setting is calm and friendly, we sat for a good few hours and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. I would highly recommend.
We were welcomed cheerily and given a good seat by a window so that we could watch the passing scene.
The menu was tempting and as a lover of fish ( I am Pisces! ) i found the good sized fresh sole from Brixham simply cooked, served with a little samphire and which complemented the fish beautifully. My husband had steak, pink but he found it slightly rubbery, so I'm glad I chose the fish and hearing that this is delivered daily was reassuring.
We enjoyed chatting with our waiter and already have told several friends about this charming restaurant.
Perhaps the only drawback was the strange 'music'-- but it probably suits younger customers!.
Good atmosphere, good location, non-intrusive service. The menu is very good, although not daring or experimental. We had a very good time and felt comfortable dining here with our teenage daughter.
Something that called our attention was the “voluntary” 12.5% charge, as it does not seem to be voluntary at all. I would be more comfortable if the word voluntary was not used.
We will certainly visit again.
Had a lovely lunch here, quality of food was great - we had the beef and oyster pie and the pastry was some of the best I’ve had. A very nice sophisticated setting, which also has the cosiness of a pub.
A very good set price menu and excellent service. A little noisy with somewhat intrusive music . The menus suit most tastes and all pockets and can be good value or very expensive . Have had lunch there a few times and have always enjoyed it . Our Italian waitress was charming, attentive and gave us the recipe for the excellent soup. Definitely one of Oxford’s better restaurants and good to get away from the ubiquitous chain restaurants that litter Oxford .
Excellent service and excellent food. This is an expensive restaurant but not much more than some pretty mediocre, some might say complacent, places in Central Oxford, and this place is in the next league.
A great place with an inventive and interesting menu. The food was lovely. The atmosphere was good and the décor leads to a super ambience.
Great food, pleasant and efficient staff made a great night. Definitely recommend it.
The food was ok except they never offered us the specials like other tables . The only downside was the rushed service 3 courses took less than an hour and as last year it was cold and we had to keep our jackets on . The food and setting is nice though
Great restaurant. Wonderful food and service excellent which is rare in Oxford.
Wonderful meal, great romantic and intimate ambience and warm, attentive and professional service. I cannot recommend this place highly enough, absolutely first class.
Warm welcome and friendly staff. Delicious soup and absolutely no pressure to eat quickly. Nice location in central oxford but off the hurly burly of the shopping street but easy to find and close to museum and all other tourist attractions. Thank you
Very good ambience, great wine list and locally sourced ingredients. Service from Jennifer was fantastic and very entertaining
This could not have been a more delightful lunch experience. It was my second visit and my sons' first. They were as pleased as I was with the atmosphere, food, service and general ambience. This is fast becoming my number one favourite place to eat lunch in Oxford.
Elegant, stylish restaurant serving excellent food. Perfect for a relaxed dinner.
It’s the second time we’ve dined here.. first time upstairs for seafood platters, this time downstairs, me and my lovely wife out for a “date night”... a dozen oysters shared to start, followed by flat iron steak and the rabbit. Couldn’t fault any of it, lovely service and left with a “feel good” factor!
Outstanding food and service in a great environment!
What a pleasant surprise to find somewhere in the centre of Oxford that cared about both the quality of food and giving decent service.
Service very nice at first but became forgetful. Fish dishes too thickly breaded when we requested no breading at all. Veggies nice. The only superb dish was the lobster bisque and it was worth the whole experience. I’d return but not for top class meal—a nice meal, nice experience.
Amazing!!!! If you get a chance to go, book a table
Order the beef and oyster pie! You won't regret it. There is a large marrow bone in the middle and it is the size of a conventional pie pan. To our surprise, my small wife and I ate the entire thing. The service was also attentive without being intrusive. Give it a try and you will be happy.
Loved this place. Original food. Cooked to order. Tried new things and loved them. Cocktails really great too. Good wine choice. Lovely intimate romantic place. Definitely would go again.
We had a really beautiful night, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and generous with their time. I normally find quite posh restaurants quite intimidating, but this was so welcoming. First time ever having oysters, and they were amazing! Quite expensive but well worth it. Perfect date night.
Excellent service from the moment we stepped through the door
Slightly hidden away a little of a restaurant, chatty atmosphere, good food - would recommend the lobster bisque.
Cosy, yet elegant. Food was a very high standard. Great cocktails too.
Food was fantastic and service was excellent. Nice relaxed atmosphere in a lovely setting. Will be returning.
Knocked a star off the food as my husband felt his fish soup was "a bit too thick", but that's just a minor niggle. Everything else was very good. My fish was very fresh; friend's lobster was "one of the best she's ever had"; chocolate pave sublime.
There's a fun atmosphere, original decor, good service. Great to have somewhere in Oxford that makes the journey into town worthwhile - just try to avoid approaching the restaurant via dirty, litter-strewn Cornmarket and head instead along Ship St from the Turl.
They were wonderful when it came to surprising my friend for her birthday and even let us stay there later. Absolutely wonderful food and service.
The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff very, very helpful. Ship street is definitely raising its bar very high. Superb!
The food is surprisingly good. Oysters, for example, were among best have had anywhere. The rest of the experience is slightly out of kilter. The setting is more like a pub, and the kitchen is too slow for a lunch place right in the heart of the city. When asked why simple dishes were taking so long, server replied they were busy. This is never a good answer, especially when it's obviously not really true!
We were in Oxford and wanted a spot for a nice dinner. We came across No 1 Ship Street and it looked good, so we decided to give it a try. We were very pleased that we did. The food was delicious and there is a nice variety to satisfy everyone. The service was great. The ambiance is very comfortable and inviting. We cannot wait to return to Oxford and visit No 1 Ship Street again.
Booked to celebrate my sons graduation. The service was very informal and friendly, great recommendations for the food. Which was excellent.
Have been here before and always enjoyed the high quality food and good service
This is a little gem hidden in the centre of Oxford. The dishes are beautifully crafted and locally sourced, the ambience is intimate and romantic (just a little noisy at busy times), and the service is really friendly. There are also some great cocktails, and even more in the bar upstairs!
Me and my partner had dinner here for his birthday and the food was absolutely delicious! The service was friendly and generous with a complimentary glass of wine and a candle in the desert for my partners birthday.
Lovely cosy, quiet, romantic atmosphere and unreal cooking!
