Very very quick service, we arrived a little early and were seated very quick. Starters and Mains were served and cleared within half an hour! Good if you were wanting a quick bite to eat, if out for a relaxed evening may have felt a little rushed. Mains could have been a little hotter and it was only warm, however the food tasted good!
Great service and food tasted excellent. Would have been nice to be seated in the restaurant as the bar area was very loud, especially as we were after a relaxing dinner out, understandably though if they weren’t too busy would have made sense not to have opened the restaurant.
Will probably return in the future, just hope the mains will be hotter!
Great food and service. Highly recommended. Great setting too.
Nice atmosphere, nice staff, food indifferent I’m afraid.
We really enjoyed our time at OSBK. We will definitely return to try the wider menu :)
we ate here after playing golf in cornwall whilst staying in mount hawke and seeing the signs to the old school. The evening was really enjoyable and included chats with staff and owner, all of whom gave us every consideration. It felt like a happy place to work...as well as to eat. We wish it every success and would suggest that anyone who makes the effort will be rewarded. The local environment is in itself part of the experience. nick
Not its usual standard on Sunday. Had roast which we were the last they were dishing up as running out. Food not very hot and red cabbage very vinegary that was not very palatable
This restaurant should be full - all the time. They try really hard to make your dining experience as good as possible. They are not paying me to say this - I just dined there twice within the space of a few days. Yes, I can and do eat at more expensive places than the Old School but very often I am left unhappy about the value for money. That is not the case with the Old School. Give them a try.
Before we arrived, we were telephoned to be informed that there were no roast dinner meals available, as they had sold out. When we arrived, we were also told that several other items across the menu were not available. They had apparently run out of all sorts of ingredients. The restaurant was quiet yet no one bothered to check that out meal was satisfactory, or that items we had ordered, had not arrived. We were billed for these until we asked them to be removed. A disappointing evening out, with weak service, a poor menu choice and no atmosphere whatsoever. The food that we did get, was bland and not of the standard their website promotes. Give this one a miss.
We had a lovely lunch which we enjoyed. We chose roast Sunday lunch. I was however disappointed that despite giving 24 hours notice about my severe red wine allergy I had to go without gravy. No substitute was offered. Given that ample warning had been provided I feel that a little stock could have been held back. There is also Bisto when needed!!.
Food was very nice but plate was cold and the food was only warm
Very accomadation as had a wheelchair for eldery person made more room so we were not crammed in .
As elderly person allowed mum to have a small roast beef as she would not been able to eat a standard meal and would have been a waste of food and would have been there all night as mum is a slow eater!!
also problems with the friers last sunday and 3 of us had ordered the pulled pork and we were able to have the roast potatoes with it which was lovely felt like a roast dinner as we were expecting the carvery as advertised on web site but could not fault the food we had and the service provided.
Hoping to come again on 16/09/18
Old School Bar & Kitchen Review
A return visit to this restaurant and pub for me. 15 minutes from Truro and an easy short drive from the A30 (Scorrier exit) with free parking. It's a fair drive from where I live (30+ mins) but worth it. Enjoyed a drink in the airy outdoor bench seating area while having a look over the menu. Nice beers & lagers (Skinners Lushington, Bath Ales Gem & Dartmoor Brewery Jail Ale), wine selection looked decent too. Easy choice of the main dish being a Sunday, but no options of meat/carvery as I believe they used to serve. Beef only as the 12-4 pm Sunday roast but a a good few other mains and specials were on offer. Part of our group chose battered haddock and chips and the waitress warned us of a longer than usual wait due to some fryer issues. I didn't think the wait was very long though. Really generous portions and I was glad I hadn't had a starter. I have to say I found the roast mains were not served hot enough. Apparently they had been on the warmer but they really hadn't kept their heat well at all.
Everything tasted great all the same and we didn't want to send our dishes back to be heated as was offered as we were enjoying the food. I tried the fish and chips, and the haddock tasted nice and fresh. Did I say the portions were big already?!
Drinks were quickly served and water provided.
Amply fed we declined the desserts but the ones I saw come out looked good. Overall a pleasant experience and as the coast is really close a great place for a meal before heading there.
We were the only ones eating at lunchtime, there were a few people having a drink outside when we arrived.
The music was quite loud when we arrived but was turned down to a better level for talking without us having to ask.
We were disappointed that they didn't have their special lunchtime offer on so we chose from the normal menu. There was a problem in the kitchen delaying our meals so they gave us some complimentary olives and bread which was nice.
The food was very good, particularly the fish in the catch of the day item.
Excellent food, excellent service. Would highly recommend
Web were visiting the area and came here based on reviews. The building and setting is lovely. The food was nice we had a burger and the veg Thai green curry. The waitresses were all nice but the service was incredibly slow. We waited 20 minutes for our drinks and an hour for our food. It was busy which is why it might have been slow but with that came a lot of noise and children running about which didn’t help. I would come again and try a different dish and hope it was a quieter evening
Fantastic food in a very nice environment. 100% recomendable and very afordable.
The restaurant was very nice, staff were friendly and attentive the food was enjoyable. Only disappointment was the fish special which was a very small portion of fish
Been coming here for 3 years. Sadly the quality this time round has certainly fallen. The food was disappointing. They need to up their game!
We were on holiday in Cornwall , enjoyed the setting and the pasta dish from the specials with crab was delicious .
Enjoyed our meal. Staff friendly and polite. Only criticism thought starters and desserts where on the pricey side for what they were.
Ordered the duck starter, 3 cured slices arrived. They were so tough that your teeth couldn't bite them so we're inedible. We told the waitress who informed us that the duck was fresh and that's the way it was, and sorry we didn't like it. I had the steal and ale pie for main, no sauce, meat was dry with little or no favouring. Chips were nice.
We decided against pudding. Ham hock was nice to start, alot of bread to bulk it out. Burger was average. Over priced and average.
Shame, but at least the company was nice!
Other members of the group enjoyed it, Myself not so much Orderd a pint of coke and got half a pint, orderd a cheese burger and had a burger with no cheese I sent it back all the chef did was grate some cheese on top of it and not bother to melt it.
Will not be rushing back
Really good veggie options and great portion sizes. Very impressed and I will be back
Disappointing. Burger very dry, not served with any relishes or sauces. Sundae was just an enormous lump of clotted cream with a couple of token bits of brownie and ice cream. Serving staff were clueless. Seasonal temps? Can’t understand why this place has all the awards. Pint was ok.
We stayed within walking distance of the Old School bar and Kitchen on a recent holiday to Cornwall.
The Proprietor was very welcoming and friendly. She gave us lots of tourist guidance and information about the local area.
We will definitely visit again on future holidays to Cornwall.
Catch of the day was £25 it consisted of four new potatoes, two pieces of broccoli and a 5cm square of fish. It was nicely cooked but for twentyfive quid........come on! Oh and it was cold.
Unfortunately I can’t give a true review. We had a table booked at 1.45pm. Bought s drink went into the restaurant to be told that they had run out of the Sunday roast. They only had one meat on offer. The special was belly pork but as they had no veg left could not offer this as an alternative. We then paid for our drinks and left. Ended up going back to our hotel in St Ives after a 80 min round trip.
A fabulous Sunday afternoon. Friendly team, super food. The tian of crab was superb and the Dexter beef was tender and flavoursome. A small error with our order was rectified to our complete satisfaction. We'll be back!
Outstanding meal in a very pleasant location. Strongly recommended.
Dissappointing 40th Birthday meal. Service slow. Duck starter extremely poor, couldn’t cut into the duck and even the dog wouldn’t touch it. Steaks all served with wrong sides, waitress asked us to swap all steaks ourselves and redistributethe muddled up sides. Mums main came 10 minutes after ours despite chasing waitress up 3 times, she even went on to take a drinks order on way back to kitchen. Did get a free glass of Birthday fizz so not all bad. That said wouldn’t return or recommend.
First visit. Very well looked after and thoroughly enjoyed the location and friendly atmosphere.
Great food but veggies basic on Sunday lunch always great staff nice location quaint in fact
We were disappointed with the service, we waited and waited for someone to take our order for drinks, and it was about an hour's wait for our starters to arrive, and that was after I had to find someone to serve us. The food was good, but the evening was ruined by unacceptable service, and I had advised before booking that it was a special occasion, sadly it was the worst service we would have expected.
We were visiting the area and booked Sunday lunch. The usual Sunday carvery was replaced with a ‘lighter’ menu which looked good. Nevertheless, we went with roast beef which we enjoyed. We will be back!
Excellent as ever, relaxed and friendly, cannot fault it.
We heard good reports so booked for wedding anniversary. Staff were helpful and polite but we found the food bland and over priced. The dressed crab was just mush and the fish tasteless. Disappointed.
Staying in the village for a few days. Have dined at OSBK 3 evenings out of 5 up till now.
I had tuna burger which was so raw I sent it back for it to be returned to me so over cooked it was awful
Sorry but true
Plus the 2 steaks the others had lacked flavour but cooked well
We went to this restaurant whilst on holiday. The meals were too large from the menu-lots of chips. However we ordered a meal from the specials menu and it was smaller than a starter, but fine dining quality. The food tasted good. There was a lot of choice .
The service was good , dog friendly and lots of gluten free options.
